#37 - into the trees

With the guns reloaded, MPK5 slung over the shoulder and shotgun in hand Vladimir's ready to move on. Bolting out the front doorway he runs hard for the houses across the street, focused on making it to the northern hill.

"There!" Sig spots Vladimir running and slips the Escalade back into drive. Squealing and peeling off rubber, Sig aims SUV and rifle at Vlad.

Also seeing Vlad, Dicky has to hop aside from the SUV while hastily firing. BANG, BANG, BANG!

Just reaching the back of the house Spike and Dave hear the commotion and race to the street.

Not able to control the Escalade well with a blown front tire Sig manages to keep after Vlad and fires a few rounds BANG, BANG, BANG!

Giving chase on foot Dicky runs almost parallel with their target.

Pressing harder on the accelerator Sig envisions Vladimir on the hood. Picking up the pace Vlad darts to the right, narrowly eluding the Escalade.

Trying to turn hard to the right the SUV doesn't respond quickly. Driving past their target Sig awkwardly pulls the rifle from the driver's window to aim out the passenger side. Dicky stays on track of Vlad firing a couple random shots, BANG, BANG!

Having gone too far Sig presses heavily on the brake. The SUV slows slightly until all the brake fluid spurts from the shot line. The Escalade bounces off the curb and onto the sidewalk then through a picket fence.

Spike and Dave reach the street swiftly assessing the situation. They can see Dicky chasing their assailant towards the backyard of a house across the street. Unsure what's wrong with Sig or vehicle, they pause to watch the Escalade slam into a brick house, BOOM! halting the vehicle.

Spike points out the Escalade to Dave, "check on Sig." Before Dave can reply Spike races after Dicky and Vlad.

"Okay," Dave hurries over to the now steaming Escalade.

Reaching the backyard Vlad pivots around the house to avoid being easily shot at by others. Completing his turn Vlad aims the shotgun for Dicky. Dicky shoots a couple times, BANG, BANG! In the path of the shotgun Dicky attempts to alter course and duck for cover. One of his bullets hits Vlad in the same wounded shoulder. Not even flinching Vlad fires, BLAM! The pellets take out Dicky's left leg.

As Dicky crashes to the ground he keeps shooting towards Vladimir, BANG, BANG, BANG! None of his shots come close.

Vlad calmly and swiftly expels the empty shell while chambering a second, "gotcha." Vladimir lines up the shot, BLAM! ending Dicky's life.

Just catching the cold demise, Spike shoots at Vlad, BANG, BANG!

Already turning Vlad's urged to race for the hillside trees from Spike's shots, BANG, BANG, BANG!

Hearing the gunfire approaching, Filomena fears of being found and shot. Wanting to head back to the mansion as suggested, she's unsure which direction to go. Not a great swimmer, she runs east, downriver hoping for better cover around a nearby bend in the river.

From across the river Floyd and partner spot Filomena running. Turning the pick-up truck around to follow they report in, "hey it's Shane here. Floyd and I just spotted someone along the river running east. Were turning around to get to the bridge, maybe head them off."

"Yeah do that," Hoss replies back to them then adds, "keep an eye out for a wolf too."

Unsure about a wolf Shane shrugs while responding, "okay boss."

Dazed from the crash Sig looks at the radio wondering if he heard Roy right or not. Inspecting the Escalade Dave inquires, "you all right Sig? Nasty stop you made there."

Getting out of the SUV Sig gives the head a shake, "yeah, think the brakes went out. Did you hear Roy right? Did he say wolf?" Sig sees the bullet holes along the front quarter panel, "brake lines must've got shot up."

"That's what I thought I heard," Dave looks over Sig seeing he's not noticeably hurt, "maybe our shooter has a pet wolf. The one Larry and I went chasing that knocked me into the creek."

A scenario yet considered Sig ponders the possibility of it, "a trained pet wolf?" He pauses to retrieve the rifle and radio from the truck, "a problem we can deal with later anyway. We best catch up with Dicky and Spike. This son of a bitch were after has damn near wiped us out."

"Sure thing," Dave leads Sig around the house everyone else went behind.

The pair don't travel far spotting Dicky laid out on the overgrown lawn. Sig and Dave share a look of vengeful concern before running for the woods.

Loosing sight of the group Bob scans the hillside with the binoculars, "Sig crashed the Escalade looks like a write off. He and Dave are on foot following Spike into the woods. Do you think we should get Floyd to stay over there?"

Debating on fleeing or fighting Hoss is frustrated, "for fuck sakes! We've just about lost everyone today. Should blow those fucking cows up. Maybe that would put an end to things. But this has to be the ones responsible for my boy's death. I want to see their demise before mine. They have to be headed back here. If I was that fucker out there I wouldn't retreat yet. I bet his partner is headed right back this way to take another shot at me. Floyd is fine, perhaps tell them to drive up the riverbank when they cross the bridge. But they'd be easily seen or heard by someone on foot. Maybe tell Jerry to get the Hummer up here."

Unable to see anyone in the trees Bob agrees more concerned for his own skin, "yeah, Jerry's not going to be much help to us down there. The Hummer's fairly bullet resistant, we could use it for cover. We should probably at least take to the house."

Roy debates the idea, wanting cover worries if they get comfortable, complacency may allow others to get the drop on them, "no we should stay outside." He points to the northern hill, "that's where they'll come from. We should at least get onto the side porch. So we don't have to watch over our backs."

Agreeing, Bob nods stepping towards the porch. "good thinking Roy."

Cautiously moving backwards Hoss uses the radio, "Jerry you and Wyatt get up here. Park yourselves between the house and tree-line."

Glad to be on the move Jerry starts the vehicle, "be up in a second Roy."

BANG, BANG, BANG! Still being shot at Vladimir manages to get some distance on Spike. Darting between trees Vlad waits for an opportunity to strike back, when Spike has to reload.

Figuring Spike should run out of rounds soon Vladimir pulls out one of the handguns.

Around the next tree Spike's gun stops firing. As he slows to switch clips Vladimir turns about dropping to a knee and sights up Spike, POP, POP, POP!

Startled Spike drops the fresh clip then scrambles to duck behind a tree.

POP, POP, POP! Vlad fires several more times to ensure Spike stays put for a moment or two. Tucking the gun away Vlad keeps running.

After several quiet seconds without gunfire Spike peers from behind the tree, "shit!" Vladimir isn't seen or heard.

Dave and Sig catch up to Spike as he locates his dropped clip of bullets.

Looking about Sig inquires, "where the HELL is he?"

Reloading the gun Spike shrugs and points to where Vlad was last seen, "he was waiting for me to run out of bullets. Like he was counting them. He spun around while I was still pulling the trigger. Started shooting back, I had to take cover. When I look out he's gone."

Sig sighs, "he must be ex-military of some sort." Walking over that way he points to the ground, "he must've taken a bullet or two there's blood splatters over here and on some of the leaves of these weeds. We should be able to track him."

Dave has a look too, "glad to see he bleeds. Was starting to wonder if the guy was human or not."

Studying the trees Spike queries, "did Roy say something about a wolf?"

"Yeah," Sig follows the blood trail, "Dave thinks it might be his pet. You think it might actually be the one that knocked you down?"

Dave begins looking for animal tracks as well as blood, "well I'll know if I see it. That thing was big. Like bear big."

Spike's imagination kicks in, "you think we're dealing with werewolves?"

Dave chuckles, "jeez I hope not."

Sig rolls his eyes, "werewolves? Yeah right. It's not night and there's no full moon. We're looking for that guy, and a dark haired teen. If we see a wolf I think we're armed enough to deal with that."

Recalling his encounter Dave comments, "I thought Larry and I could handle it. On they walk back we kept wondering if it was leading us on."

"I don't know about that," Sig tries to stay focused on following the blood trail but does wonder what Hoss saw.

Looking towards the river Spike asks Sig, "you saw some teenager headed to the river? Did you get a good look at them? Were they armed?"

Recalling the sight Sig tells them, "only saw them for a second. They were dressed in baggy brown clothes. Small build with a mop of dark hair. Couldn't see anything like a rifle on them but you never know."

Spike recalls the clothes they found at the river, "hey the boots and pants we found were small sized. Think that's the one who took a shot at Roy? Stripped down to help them swim back upriver easier."

Sig sighs thinking of the time they wasted searching the riverbank, "yeah now that you mention it, I bet that's what happened." He wonders if they should at least spread out so they can keep an eye on the river.

Dave suggests it, "if that's the case one of us should go up there, follow the tree-line. That way they could see most of the riverbank and keep an eye on whose ever down here tracking."

Nodding Spike agrees with the logic, "I'll walk the tree-line up there."

"Alright." Sig suggests to Dave, "You walk a line between. Can't hurt to spread out might find other prints out there."

"Yup," Dave starts splitting off, "like a wolf."

"You never know," Spike follows Dave for few minutes.

Sig almost wants to laugh at them, "I was thinking more about a smaller person's footprints. But keep a look out for anything that shouldn't be there."

"Alright," Dave puts some distance between him and Sig but close enough they can call out to each other.

Leaving Dave, Spike hustles to the top of the hill hoping they haven't passed anything of importance on the other side.

Several miles down river Floyd and Shane have reached the bridge that crosses the river. They park the truck in the middle of the road providing a wide view upriver.

At Hoss' house Jerry parks the Hummer similarly to easily view the northern hillside trees.

With two others there Hoss relaxes enough to take a seat but is mentally torn. He badly wants vengeance but is concerned things could get worse.
