#31- changes in plan
Hoss' men begin to separate, those on foot spread out to search the immediate area. The Hummer circles back east on the main street.
First continuing west the pick-up only drives to the end of the street stopping. The driver uses a side-mounted spotlight to scan the area. Two men in the bed of the truck flick on high-powered flashlights to inspect what they can.
The black Escalade backs up to take a short northerly side road. The road gradually turns right following a parallel route with the hill encompassing the village.
Reaching the other side of the river Filomena perches in a tall tree. Studying the southern bank she surmises no one is following her. Okay, now what Fil? Scanning far to the east she too realizes the sun will be up soon. Oh shit and here I am with nothing to wear.
At the village's main intersection the Hummer comes to a stop. The male operating the machine gun slowly turns about. The driver and a passenger get out and seem to be searching their immediate area.
Able to see them Vladimir keeps an eye on the Escalade slowly rolling east. Checking on the other guys with the pick-up it seems to Vlad they're setting up a watch position. Men in pairs are spread out from the south to north edges of the village, searching their way back to the center of town. Two separated searching lights nearing the decrepit farm troubles Vlad the most. Unable to move Vladimir has to wait for men close by to pass. Evident the sky is changing Vlad prays the stash of guns remain concealed, and he's able to change, unnoticed.
Feeling safe and calmer Filomena flies back across the river. Reaching the other side she takes to the trees for cover with four men searching the wooded hillside; one walks the riverbank east, another close by follows the tree-line. Two traverse the light wooded hill within eyesight of each other.
Ready to move Vladimir hesitates observing the pick-up truck passenger wave someone over. While talking the passenger exits the truck and follows the summoned man away. Scanning places in their direction Vlad figures they're headed to shepherd the schoolyard herd.
With the men spread out and closing in the village center Vlad makes for the farm. Cautiously he hops up and glides to the next spot of shadowy cover.
On the adjacent hill from Hoss' place Ella uses the rifle's scope to study the house. The house completely dark inside and out she scans each window in view however doesn't see any movement or traces of life. The house is completely dark, inside and out. Setting the gun aside she wants to get closer or perhaps to the other side. Looking back into the village she can see the Hummer at the main intersection. Keeping her in place the Escalade seems to be slowly returning to house. The dark midnight blue of the sky is disappearing.
Once the men have moved far enough east Fil flutters above the trees and glides over their crowns down to the village. Not wanting to revert out in the open she slips inside the first open window seen, of a small two-story home.
Close to the farm Vlad stops to study the pair of men on the property. One cases the house while another inspects the grounds, past the barn. Certain the stash remains hidden Vlad debates where to make the change.
Stopping along the bottom of the bordering road the Escalade idles. Ella sights up the occupants, both scanning the area. Recognizing Dave and time running out Ella eases her finger on the trigger. Might as well take one more out while I can. Hit the driver, that vehicle won't be moving right away. Making the shot hard Dave keeps moving his head forcing Ella to drop the cross-hairs chest level.
Over at Hoss' house a side door opens and Ella can hear two men talking as they come out. Taking her eyes from the scope glances to the house. A sly grin forms seeing Hoss himself and another male. Oh my what's this, the big man reveals himself.
Ella alters her position to sight up Hoss. I've got you now. With Hoss' big head in the cross-hairs Ella eases finger onto the trigger. Taking in a deep breath Ella steadies herself making sure of the shot. Hoss takes a few steps screwing up her shot. Damn it hold still.
Re-sighting him she watches as the man places a cigar in the mouth to light. The accompanying man flicks a lighter then holds the flame out. Hoss bends his head down to ignite the cigar off the flame. Ella waits for his head to come back up.
Taking a few drags Hoss gets the cigar to smolder. Exhaling the smoke Hoss looks around his property.
Ella has a straight on head shot perfectly lined up. She once again takes in a breath ready to squeeze the trigger. Exhaling her breath the change coming on causes her arms to twitch while squeezing the trigger. BANG! Ella fires the gun but misses Hoss' head. "SHIT!"
Her bullet hits Hoss' big shoulder. The sound catches everyone's attention. Witnessing the muzzle flash Hoss takes the stinging hit making her out.
The man with Hoss draws a handgun from waistband, "what the hell happened?"
"I'm hit, Spike," spitting out the cigar Hoss points to Ella, "they're right over there."
Ella wants to try another shot but her arms and legs are twitching too much.
Spike aims his handgun Ella's way and let's a few bullets fly. BANG! BANG! BANG!
Needing to flee Ella drops the rifle and runs with twitching hinderance, deeper into the trees towards the river.
Hearing a shot Dave gets the Escalade in drive with urgency speeding up the hill to Hoss.
On the two-way radio Sig is calling in, "shots fired at Hoss'."
The Hummer starts up and spins around to head that way. The boys in the pick-up do as well.
Considering elsewhere to change Vlad's semi-relieved for the gunfire as it causes the two men to run back to the village. Allowing Vladimir to glide to the ground before falling there.
Reaching the river Ella's unsure what to do unable to hold off the change and nowhere to hide. Hearing men approach from the woods and the west Ella strips off boots and pants.
Before spotted Ella splashes deep into the river allowing the current to take her away. Praying she doesn't drown or get shot during the change.
As the Escalade reaches the top of the hill Sig bolts from his seat following Spike in pursuit of the shooter. Dave rushes over to aid Hoss with his injury.
Realizing the wound is livable Hoss yells at Dave, "don't fucking touch me! Get the Hell after who's out there! And bring their ass back here for me to put a few holes in!"
"Okay." Dave nods turning to join the foot pursuit.
When the Hummer reaches the house the driver calls out to Hoss, "what happened? Are you okay?"
"Yeah." With his good arm Hoss points to the wounded shoulder than the woods, "some fucker shot me in the shoulder. Spike, Sig and Dave are giving chase."
The men in the Hummer look over to the trees. The woods are too thick to drive their vehicle into so the driver asks, "do you want us to head in on foot too."
Grimacing Hoss steps towards the driver, "where are the others?"
The driver shrugs as the exact whereabouts of the men on foot is unknown, "I think everyone's headed this way." They can hear the pick-up rapidly approaching.
Reaching the riverbank Spike and Sig find Ella's boots and pants. Sig radios it in, "Hoss you there? Spike and I are at the river. Looks like whoever took that shot at you took to the river. We don't see anyone but we're going to follow the river for a bit. You may want somebody to get to the other side in case they're swimming for it."
Hearing Sig, the driver of the Hummer nods to Hoss backing up the vehicle, "we're on it."
"Yeah get on it." Hoss nods back, "and Jerry if you find the bastard bring their ass back here for me to finish off."
"You got it," Jerry partially salutes while getting the vehicle straightened out to take off.
The passenger gets on the radio, "yo Sig, Jerry and I are on the move. Keep us updated."
Walking the riverbank Sig replies to them, "yeah I will." Still using the radio speaks to the driver of the pick-up, "hey Floyd if you got your ears on, follow Jerry and help work the northern side of the river. The rest of us will spread out searching this side. They can't be too far and are on foot. Keep your eyes out for any vehicles seen parked over there."
The pick-up can be heard altering course as its' tires squeal making a sharp turn out of the village. Straightening out Floyd replies over the radio, "ten four we're on it. Ivan and Oscar are over at the school-yard keeping an eye on the cows."
Suffering through the pain Hoss walks to a chair on the porch using the radio, "find that son of a bitch and bring them back to me. Bob if you're listening I could use some help here. The rest of you, work the woods and see what you can find." Hoss eases his fat bottom onto a porch chair.
Bob radios in, "I hear you boss. I'm on my way."
"Good." Grumbling curses Hoss sets the radio down on a table.
