#10 - reconnaissance
Back to the earlier days' bedroom Ella waits for things further settle down. Changing into more suitable and warmer attire she notices patrols outside; Food, wolf or other they're searching for something.
Using the time she plans where to go, the hospital for possible supplies or pay Ida a visit. Hesitating the decision Ella's ears turn pink warming up enough she has touch them. Is that Vlad thinking about me?
Quiet outside Ella checks to see if the house is still quiet on the inside. I bet Vlad's all worried about me, alone in the city for the night. Too bad there's no place to go dancing. Causing the floor to creak ever so slightly she creeps along the second floor hallway, making the second floor noisier than the first.
The first floor clear of any danger, she scans outside where possible she glimpses a passing patrol, allowing her a chance to slip out the back.
Obscuring her face under an old Tilly safari hat Ella casually walks the streets; Ahead Ida's residence is easily seen.
Reaching a street corner Ella notices all windows of Ida's home are dark. Not wanting to knock and disturb anyone she decides best check the hospital for the needed supplies.
With people still on alert most of the men are scouring the edges of the city. Those still around take little notice of little old Ella strolling along.
Appearing to be the cleanest building around the hospital is dark. Even though the lights aren't on she knows there are sick and injured inside. A gut feeling suggests to her an on duty night nurse or two is likely.
What's sought isn't near patient beds so Ella goes around to the back of the building.
She grins spotting the shipping, receiving docks and doors of the hospital.
Her grin becomes a smile as the doors are not locked or manned.
Requiring illumination inside she draws out a FOB sized LED light from her pocket.
Scanning the walls of the shipping area she spies what's first sought in a small office; the building layouts.
The posted floor plans are complete with department listings. Making it easy she notes three possible locations to search. Starting with the safest and best bet the sub basement.
Following the first dark hall she travels to a stairwell that joins all floors.
Fine with the darkness of night, dark interior spaces with many doors she's fearful of.
In the stairwell faint moans echo down to her heightened hearing. Please let that just be someone suffering, and not the suffering dead.
In the dark damp sub basement Ella hears the occasional odd drip in between her heartbeats. Pausing to listen a chill runs down her spine hearing another moan. Holy that's creepy. Don't need to hear that while I'm down here.
Walking the hallway she observes a few emptied storage rooms. Looks like this level has been raided already. Maybe wasting my time here. Maybe scare myself to death. It's so dark down here. Feels like I'm being watched.
Halfway down the hallway she reaches an intersection of doubled doors.
Taking a moment to read room locations she can smell the way. Yuck, death mixed with refrigeration equipment, if it's to be anywhere it has to be here. Sure enough she reads morgue and cold storage on a set of doors before her.
Opening the doors sounds like a vacuum seal breaking to her, releasing spirits. A pungent wafting of old dead rolls over Ella escaping the room. Cold to the bone Ella shivers as if souls passed right through her.
Intensely felt she closes eyes and mouth tight restraining a scream, "holy shit!" What the hell did I just let out? Or how many? Exhaling she mutters, "just people." Glancing into the darkness of the hall she glimpses orbs making for the stairs.
Ella attempts to shake off jitters. Just one of life's mysteries. Is that the next step? I'm avoiding. Shakily she redirects senses from the hall's darkness to the morgue.
The room is encircled in stainless steel. Two of the longest walls are body drawers. Some drawers are slid out but empty. Two partial walls have an L-shaped lab counter and cupboards. In the center of the room an examination table with two adjustable, ceiling post lights.
Fully entering the room Ella taps the steel table's raised edge with a fingernail. Nice. One more thing she's avoided longer in life than any other being. If I'm lucky I'll never be put on one of these. She muses with the idea of laying down now while still able to feel it.
"Please," a faint disembodies voice pleads.
A goose-bump causing shiver runs down Ella's spine. "what was that?" The voice so faint she's not sure of what was even said. "is there somebody here?" Wishing to have a bigger light right now Ella's barely illuminates corners and nooks in the room, "Hello?" Nothing else is heard and she doesn't see any signs of life, not even spider webs.
Across the room she spies a set of closed, security windowed doors. Her tiny LED beam emits enough light to gleam off stainless steel on the other side.
Several refrigerators line the walls all labeled for contents. The basement being cooler Ella crosses fingers before entering. Please something be here, so I don't have to search the whole building. I don't care if it's expired, just be there so I can say it is to Vlad.
Inside the room Ella begins reading content markings on the doors. Hearing the whirring of small fans inside the units lets her know they are powered. Two center units are marked blood and plasma.
She pulls open both doors to have a look inside, one it is empty and cold. The second is also cold but has clear plastic sacks in it. Getting excited she closes the first door to inspect the contents of the second.
On a middle shelf she finds a dozen near freezing sacks of saline.
With nothing obviously on the empty upper shelves she knells to inspect the lower ones. Both shelves contain plasma she counts thirty sacks before tightly closing the door. Oh that's got to be a good sign. Not ready for them yet she prays upon returning they'll be there.
Though feeling watched Ella keeps it together taking time to scour the two rooms for other items.
In the lab cabinets she finds some assorted needles, syringes, tubing and fittings. Adding a couple glass beakers to her handbag another chill runs down her. It's nobody Ella. Just a lost soul. Demons are only people. And bad souls are? For putting fear into herself she laughs, "calm yourself Ella, jeez."
Surveying surrounding stainless storage compartments she senses another soul. "I swear I can hear someone in there." Ella eases over to the forensic drawers to uneasily open ones that remain fully closed.
The first drawer takes her almost a minute just to touch the handle. With closed eyes she pulls open the sliding drawer.
Opening her eyes to an empty drawer is a relief. Making it easier for her to open the next few.
With nothing to be seen she opens the next several more routinely.
Opening another too fast promptly displays a long gone little girl. "Oh," Sighs Ella sad for whom ever it was, "poor girl, barely had any life led." So saddened the stench goes unnoticed to her while patting the girls' hand.
Startling Ella a pale pink orb emerges by her right arm, "Oh my." It drifts up moving left before her face, "is that you little girl?" She feels certain the orb is, "what a pretty fairy you've become."
The pale ball of pink light glides towards the storage room doors. About to open the doors Ella watches it change direction for the other doors.
Figuring if she let the other orbs out, "oh let me get that for you."
Opening the door Ella stands aside while directing with her other hand, "stairs up are left down the hall. Oh no I mean right, turn right. I turned left coming in here." Giggling at her self watches the orb go, "sorry don't mind me. I'm generally confused like that."
The orb vanishes in the dark hallway leaving Ella calmer.
Wondering why she's still standing there thinks of the last unopened forensic drawers.
Satisfying some crazy peace of mind she makes sure the remaining drawers are empty. Happy now? Feeling silly she snickers returning to the hallway. I've gone out for a night of free spirits before. But now this night I've freed spirits. With many orbs seen she notes never being rushed or attacked by one.
Merely snooping she investigates the rest of the sub-basement.
Wandering for an hour she found mainly mechanical and emptied storage rooms. Locating a stocked and reasonably clean washroom, with working water, she freshens up.
The washroom is positioned near at an alternate stairway up so she ascends to the basement level.
Just as she thinks about how quiet the building is, a moan echoes down. Cringing with a shiver she softly laughs, "injured people Ella."
Carrying on she hastily explores the basement floor within an hour. Mainly containing imaging departments and patient care spaces. From an exam room she procures a few harder to find essentials.
Within the basement she observes a room marked dietary storage; The hospital's pantry and its' shelves are bare of food.
While looking in the freezers she gets an uneasy queasy feeling. Closing the doors she rests a hand on the stomach. What a horrid smell in here.
Fearing the smell comes from within the refrigerators has to coax her self to open them.
Taking in and holding a breath she opens them. Nothing in the first second or third, the forth is baffling to her, "huh?"
She exhales sighting a single sealed prepackaged rice pudding, "Did every one die that liked that?" Giggling she closes the door.
Not finding a source, the smell finally drives Ella to continue explorations. Something did more than die in there. One of those times I think I'll be okay with not finding anything.
Casing the last uninteresting room she observes a side stairwell.
Looking up the stairs to a landing where light is coming through a set of doors, illuminating another set of doors straight across.
Certain the doors with illumination go outside she surmises the other doors lead to the hospital's main floor.
Had enough creeping moaning Ella's content with the night mission. Must be after midnight. Good time to get out with the goods got. Smiling widely she gives the purse a shake while ascending the stairs.
Looking out the doors' narrow window all seems quiet to her. Ella exits the hospital down the way from the shipping area.
With several hours until dawn Ella wanders wondering what to do.
Walking on a six, lane road that should be busy with traffic Ella sighs. Just when society was developing a vast nightlife all this had to happen. Contemplating on how it all happened watches her footfalls.
