Chapter 14 - The Switch (In Which Race and Ike are very Annoyed)

A/N, Weasel is chilling. Race looks like he's seen a flying cigar. Morris is looking down at the Newsies in disgust. Oscar, he's watching Elmer, who's standing on the papes. Mush, what is your pape bag doing? Jack, you don't look tough. Blink, you bean, you look so excited. I didn't know Davey and Les were in Carrying the Banner. And the twins, you're adorable.
Third Person POV

Race grumbles, smacking Albert with his hat over and over again. "I hate you. I hate you. I hate you." He repeats.

Albert chuckles. "It's worth it." He states.

Eliza chuckles.

All of the boys were wearing each other's clothes.

Race had his own pants and shoes, but Albert's socks, flannel, vest, and hat, and Spot's undershirt and suspenders on.

Ike was bright red and annoyed as well. He had Hotshot's undershirt, vest, hat, and suspenders on.

Boots wasn't horribly happy with this, but he wasn't annoyed. He had Red's undershirt, flannel, hat, and suspenders on.

Boots did like that Red's clothes smelt like him.

The three boys, along with Albert, were selling in Brooklyn today.

JoJo bounces down the stairs, grinning.

He bounces over to Romeo, who was also smiling widely.

JoJo was wearing Mike's vest and undershirt, along with his hat and suspenders.

Romeo was wearing Spec's flannel, vest, socks, and hat. He had his own undershirt and suspenders on.

Specs and Mike share a look, chuckling softly.

"Mom," Mush walks into the room.

He was wearing Blink's undershirt, suspenders, vest, and hat. He had his own flannel on though.

"Your Thursday socks are in the laundry room." Eliza answers.

"Thanks!" Mush shouts, running off.

"Does Blink want him wearing that today?" Crutchie asks.

"It's mess up his schedule, so I'm fine with it. He needs to do that." Blink explains, standing in the doorway. "It's kinda cute." He was blushing softly.

Eliza chuckles.

Elmer was wearing Crutchie's clothes. He was wearing his flannel, undershirt, suspenders, socks, vest, and hat.

They swapped hats for the day.

Buttons was wearing Henry's clothes. He had on his undershirt, socks, suspenders, vest, and hat. He had his own flannel on.

Ike sits next to his brother, grumpily.

Mike looks at him, before laughing.

Ike rolls his eyes. "Be glad you don't have to do this." He mutters, annoyed.

Mike chuckles. "Enjoy it, Ike." He responds.

Ike rolls his eyes.

"Mike's right." Eliza tells Ike. "You're only kids for a little." She reminds him.

Ike shrugs. "He's going to force me to wear clothes whether I'm fifteen or fifty." He responds.

Eliza and Mike laugh.

Tommy boy walks to Race again, hiding his head in Race's neck and hugging the boy who was the same height as him.

He was wearing Finch's undershirt, flannel, vest, socks, suspenders, and hat.

Finch chuckles, leaning on the stairs again.

Albert walks over to Finch, talking quietly with him.

Race pats Tommy boy's head. "Embarrassed?"

"My face is burning hot." Tommy boy whispers in response.

"My boyfriend is overly embarrassed." Albert comments.

Finch and Blink nod.

Race shoots Albert a glare, bright red.

Tommy boy nuzzles his head deeper into Race's neck, turning redder.

Mush tries to hide behind the couch.

"Mine is perfectly okay with this." Henry responds, gesturing to his boyfriend who was going along like this was normal.

Crutchie nods at that.

"My boyfriend is overly excited about this." Specs chuckles.

Mike points to him.

Romeo and JoJo were sitting together, giggling and grinning.

"My boyfriend isn't here and I'm still being forced to do this." Ike mutters, arms crossed.

Boots nods to him as a 'same here'.

"My boyfriend isn't here yet, but I'm still going to make him do this." Jack laughs a bit.

Lucky grins, clapping his hands. "Me too! And I'm wearing Tumbler's clothes." He blushes a bit, stopping.

He was wearing Tumbler's red undershirt and suspenders.

The boys chuckles.

Eliza was amused.

"My husband is in another century." Eliza claps her hands together, chuckling softly.

Some of the boys laugh.

Jack sent Eliza a soft smile.

Eliza smiles back at him.

Eliza waves to the boys as they leave the house.

They met Davey and Les.

Davey was bright red, and trying to avoid Jack, to which he failed.

Davey was wearing Jack's blue shirt, vest, and suspenders. They also swapped hats.

Les was excited and literally bounces over to Lucky.

Les was wearing Lucky's blue flannel, with one of his own undershirts, but he also had Tumbler's red hat and socks.

"Hi Davey." Jack chuckles softly, his arms wrapped around Davey from behind.

Davey stays silent, his eyes squeezed closed and his face getting redder and redder with each second passed.

"Why are you so embarrassed?" Jack asks him.

"Because Sarah knows, but my parents don't." Davey whispers. "And she was making subtle gestures at me and the boys keep teasing me."

"At least it's not Race." Jack points out.

"Yeah. What's up with him?" Davey asks. "He looks annoyed and keeps telling Albert that he hates him, any chance he gets." He states. "I thought he loved Albert."

Jack chuckles. "Race hates this idea a lot." He explains. "Don't worry, Albert isn't taking this to heart."

Davey nods. "At least your shirt smells like you." H mutters.

Jack chuckles.

Davey blushes when he realizes Jack heard him.

"I hate you." Race smacks Albert with his hat when he passed him.

"I love this!" JoJo exclaims, throwing his arm around Race.

Race rolls his eyes. "I-" he starts.

"Don't." JoJo finishes. "Yeah, I got that. You haven't exactly even subtle." He tells him.

The boys laugh.

Race rolls his eyes.

"I'm not selling in Brooklyn today." Race announces.

Albert laughs. "Yeah, nice try, Amore."

Race blushes.

"You're selling in Brooklyn whether you like it or not." Albert tells him.

Race glares at him, crossing his arms. "You can't do that." He states.

Albert smirks.

A few hours later

Albert sets Race down.

"Okay," Race starts. "Maybe you can do that." He mutters.

Albert, Boots, and Ike chuckle.

"Why are you three dressed in red today?" Someone from behind the three boys asks.

"Hi, Catch." Race, Ike, and Boots greet in unison, turning around to face him.

Catch smiles, waving.

"They're wearing their boyfriends' clothes today." Albert explains. "It's a thing we're doing today."

"Oh." Realization seemed to dawn on Catch. "Is that why you wanted me to have Apollo wear my clothes?"

Albert nods.

Race blushes, puffing out his cheeks and crossing his arms.

"Hotshot's going to tease me." Ike complains.

"And that's new?" Boots asks him, an eyebrow raised.

"I don't see you complaining." Race shoots at Boot.

Boots shrugs. "Red might say it's cute and make me blush a bit, but he doesn't tease me as much as your boyfriends." He explains.

Ike goes to respond, but Boots gestures to the fact that Albert had cupped Race's cheeks with his hands and was caressing his cheek.

"Albert!" Race exclaims, bright red as he pushes Albert away. "You're just proving his point!"

Albert chuckles. "Oops." He responds sarcastically.

Race rolls his eyes, grabbing a paper out of his bag, and walking over to a woman to charm her into buying a pape.

He walks back over with a nickel.

The boys chuckle.

The Brooklyn dock
Later in the day

Switch and Rock chuckle when they see Race, Boots, and Ike. (And yes, Albert was with them.)

"One word and I'll soak you." Race threatens.

Rock chuckles. "Okay, Prince." He responds.

Race rolls his eyes.

They walk down the dock.

Race climbs onto Spot's perch, sitting down next to him.

He lays his head in Spot's lap.

"I hate you for this." He mutters. "But I want hugs."

"Morning, Racer." Spot chuckles softly, playing with his hair. "Where's Al?" He asks.

"Right here." Albert steps onto the perch.

He sits down next to Spot.

Spot chuckles. "Morning, Al. Love the idea." He tells him.

Albert chuckles.

"You're pushing your limit." Race mutters, eyes closed.

"What are you going to do about it?" Spot questions with a smirk.

"Go converse with someone else." Race answers.

Spot gasps dramatically. "No! Amore!" He hugs Race close to him. " fág !"

Race hums softly. "Maybe since you asked me so nicely." He responds.

Spot smiles.

"Uh-" Albert starts. "Lost."

Spot chuckles.

"Don't leave me." Race repeats. "In Irish."

Albert puffs out his cheeks. "You both know stuff in another language. I'm boring." He mutters.

"No you're not." Spot responds.

"Buttons can teach you something." Race tells him. "Like Spanish."

Albert smirks. "Or Italian."

Race's mind drifted back to when he'd ramble in Italian about how cute his boyfriends were.

"Don't you dare." He responds, throwing his boyfriend a stern glare.

Albert smirks.

Race gets up.

Spot pouts at him. "Race." He whines softly.

Race chuckle a bit. "I have to go talk to Apollo for a bit. I haven't talked to a Jersey boy in a bit." He tells Spot.

Spot pouts.

Race climbs down the perch.

Spot turns to Albert. "You won't ever leave me, right Al?" He asks.

Albert lays his head in Spot's lap, squeezing his hand softly. "I won't ever."

Spot smiles, pressing a soft kiss to his forehead.

Ike blushes.

Hotshot chuckles.

Ike steals Hotshot's slingshot from his belt.

Hotshot's eyes widen. "Ike-" he starts.

Ike smirks, taking a pebble and loading the slingshot.

Ike looks at the wall.

He shoots.

"Wow," Hotshot starts. "I can't tell if you have horrible aim or amazing aim." He states.

Ike laughs. "Now I'm shooting Albert." He decides.

Hotshot grabs the slingshot from him. He laughs weakly. "Yeah, no." He responds.

Ike pouts. "Why not?"

"The same reason we don't give the Drifter's second in command a slingshot." Hotshot tells him.

Ike's eyebrows furrow. "Cause she'll either hurt herself or someone else?" He asks.

Hotshot nods. "And it's more often than not herself." He mutters.

"Can Cards use a slingshot?" Ike asks.

Hotshot smirks, spinning his slingshot in his hand. "Taught by Brooklyn. Her and her brother."

Ike nods.

Ike turns around, walking away from Hotshot.

Hotshot's eyebrows furrow. Did I do something?

Ike sits down next to Boots, who was sat in Red's lap.

The couple had been talking to Race, Apollo, Catch, Skittery, and Waves.

"Manhattan is weird." Wave laughs a bit.

The three Manhattan Newsies roll their eyes.

"Your boys have the worst ideas." Smokes mutters, sitting himself down next to Race.

Smokes was wearing Ace's clothes. He wore Ace's undershirt, flannel, suspenders, socks, and his vest.

He did convince Ace to let him wear his own hat, since Ace's was too big for him and he needed to see, especially since he was the third in command in Brooklyn.

"I agree." Boots responds..

Race and Ike nod.

Albert and Spot sit down with the group, pulling Race in the middle of the two of them.

Hotshot sits next to Ike, who, after a bit, let Hotshot pull him into his lap.

"I thought this was a good idea." Albert mutters, Race's hand in his own.

"I'd like to see if the tables were turned." Smokes responds, a bit snappy.

Ace chuckles, playing with Smokes' hair. "Calm down, darling." He whispers.

Smokes immediately dropped his tense shoulders, relaxing slightly.

"Curse you, Ace of Hearts." He mutters.

Ace chuckles.

"That's kinda cute." Apollo comments, his head on Catch's shoulder.

"I've heard Catch say that catching feelings for Apollo was the best thing he's ever caught." Spot tells the group, smiling.

Apollo smiles, looking up at Catch, and kissing his chin.

Catch blushes a bit, but smiles.

"Apollo calls Catch- uh-" Boots stops, trying to remember what it was. "Adonis."

Apollo smiles, resting his head against Catch's.

"He still hasn't told me what it means." Catch states.

"But he's told us." Race and Red respond.

"Adonis is the Greek God of beauty and desire." Apollo whispers.

Catch smiles.

"Cute." Ike mumbles.

"I'm shocked." Hotshot dramatizes. "My boyfriend said something was cute!" He exclaims.

Ike rolls his eyes.

"I mean," Boots smirks at Ike, who shoots him a glare. "he's said you're cute a good amount of times."

Race snickers.

Ike turns bright red, stealing Hotshot's slingshot and loading it.

Hotshot grabs the slingshot from him. "No, Isaac." He tells him.

Ike rolls his eyes. "He deserved it." He mutters.

"No, I didn't." Boots defends himself.

"Yes, you did, love." Red whispers against his neck. "I love you, but you know you did."

Ike points to Red with an obvious look on his face.

Boots rolls his eyes.

"Can I just say," Skittery starts, smirking. "Race, you have a nice mix of your boyfriends' clothes on."

Race rolls his eyes. "Shut up, Skittery." He mutters.

Skittery chuckles.
