Chapter 19: Identity Crisis
Percy was glad the pain went away. His dizziness feeling of waking up yet again, would not have been good with his plan. His incredibly stupid plan. Except this one could either be productive or it could cost him his second life.
Castor held an ice pack to his head, under his hood, which casted an distorted shadow on his face. He winced when he moved.
Hero, stood next to him arms crossed, probably wondering a million different things. He didn't look at all pleased, but Percy could be wrong.
Halo called a team meeting for Percy. He now sat with his feet up on the table fingering one of his golden arrows like he was going to use it to kill someone in a couple seconds.
Secret and Forge were inseparable. Secret clung to Forge's arm in a way Percy was sure would cut off the circulation to his fingers but Forge didn't seem to care or notice. They were both battle ready tense, like they were expecting Revenge to cut off their necks with a sword.
Revenge looked like he was contemplating doing it too. His fingers tapped the table in a quick beat, his sword was only a swift motion away from his fingertips.
Did any of them actually ever relax?
What that saying? The dead never sleep? Obviously.
"Ok." Revenge said loudly. Castor jumped in shock and banged his knee on the table, which resulted in some Greek cursing. "What are we doing? It's been five minutes. If no one starts talking I'm leaving."
"Halo, you called a meeting?" Secret say delicately.
Halo sighed and put his arrow delicately on the table. "Savior, this one's all you."
Everyone turned to Percy who frowned in thought. Finally he placed his hands on the table. "What's your favorite movie?"
The Elite exchanged glances. Revenge snorted.
"Really? Five minutes of my life wasted on that?" He scoffed, "I'm going, before he starts asking if I want to build a snowman as well!"
Revenge got up and started for the door, while Castor mumbled "I don't get it."
"No." Percy stood in front of the door. If Revenge wanted to get out of the conference room, he'd have to walk through Percy. Revenge glared at him. Percy stood his ground.
Luke tugged at his collar, and stepped forward enough to whisper into Percy's ear, so Revenge couldn't hear. Not that it mattered. Or would matter.
"Percy," Luke mumbled, "What are you doing?"
Percy pretended not to hear him and addressed the room. "What's your favorite movie? How about your favorite band? Color? God or Goddess?"
"What are you trying to say?"
Percy looked at Luke and crossed his arms. "I was just wondering if you guys knew each other at all."
Secret crossed and uncrossed her legs, "Of course."
"Oh really?" Percy said, "Fine, you can all leave if one person in here can tell me Archangel's favorite food."
Everyone exchanged more looks. Grapevine opened and closed his mouth, moving his ice pack around. Halo counted something on his fingers, but didn't answer.
"How about her favorite color?"
Secret turned to Forge mumbling something about thinking it was pink. Revenge actually turned pink.
"What are you trying to achieve here, Savior?" He demanded.
Percy met his gaze without flinching. Oh come on, he'd looked into the eyes of Tartatrus, Revenge was nothing. "You threw a guy right into my shield, and knocked Forge unconscious. Grapevine nearly got Secret killed by distracting her with a grape balloon. Omega nearly gutted Grapevine."
"So we work on our techniques." Revenge said.
Percy stepped forward and blocked Revenge again. "Archangel was here before all of you. I doubt she immediately turned her back and not said a word to you. She probably knows all of your favorite colors. Why don't you know hers?"
"I don't see where this is going, still." Forge said.
"Ooohhh...." Castor answered in a low voice that sounded more like a moan than anything, "I do."
"I've been here, well conscious here-" Halo rolled his eyes, and Percy continued "- for a total of like three days, at the most. And so far I've found out, Hero's choking on his guilt, Halo practically lives in the infirmary, and Secret is being excluded from, like everything."
It was like no one heard the first two and both everyone turned to Secret. She shrank in her cloak.
"That's because she's a nosy little snitch." Halo growled, "She tried to Charmspeak all of us into revealing ourselves."
Suddenly she was livid. A scary type of livid that Clarisse got when someone insulted her. "I DID NOT!" Her voice rang through the room, "I did no such thing! It was an accident on Archangel! She came to me, asked me for help, and then she got heated with me because I told her to calm down and tell Havoc the truth! That she fell out of love! She said something stupid, I said something worse, and now you all are having an identity crisis! I never should've joined this stupid team!"
"Secret!" Forge warned, but she waved him off.
"It wasn't like her identity was even a big secret anyway! Everyone knew there was only one other daughter of Hades!"
"Wait, Bianca?" Castor frowned, "Bianca Di Angelo? She's Archangel?"
Hero sent Percy a look, a frantic one, as everyone else went into an uproar at Secret's announcement. Percy had expected it. But now seeing the way everyone was fighting, sharp curses and threats exploding every which way, Percy wondered why any of them actually needed weapons at all. They were down right terrifying with out swords, daggers, or spears.
Finally Revenge turned to Percy who was calmly leaning against the door frame. The door, of course, was closed and sound proof according to Halo who told him about it earlier.
"Secret is a liability." Revenge said, "You leave us in here with her and all of identities are at risk."
"Don't worry it won't matter in an hour." Percy said firmly.
Everyone stopped, "What?"
"I sealed the door. No one is leaving until everyone's revealed who they are." Percy tossed them a lopsided grin.
Revenge looked like Percy slapped him. "You're bluffing!"
All it took was one look. "Am I?"
"Savior," Grapevine said as gently as possible like he was dealing with a wild dog, "No one's going to reveal themselves."
"Well then I guess it's going to be a long wait."
***
Forge cracked first.
That was surprising. You'd think of all of the Elite, Forge would've been able to last at least twenty minutes a room. Or at least Percy thought it.
Within the first eight minutes Secret was muttering about shopping. Another two and Castor was tapping his feet.
Revenge tapped his fingers twice and remained calm for about another three after that. Then he made a diving attack for the door that would've succeeded had Hero not had the same idea at the same moment. They crashed into each other and landed in a heap at Percy's feet, cursing something fierce.
Halo started placing bets on who would crack first. "I bet it's going to be Secret." He would say, "No wait, Hero. It's definitely Hero." But everybody could see he was pale, and nervous. He kept picking up his arrow, fingering it, and putting it down again as if it changed within the three seconds he'd let go.
"-and then she pulled me away from the window!" Secret said nodding her head quickly, "I mean can you believe it? That bag was beautiful! I really really wanted it-"
"Secret, honey, I love you," Forge said in that deep voice he had, "But SHUT UP!"
Everyone looked at him. Forge was standing now and he had a crazy look in his eyes that couldn't be disoriented by the hood. Apparently, no one had ever heard him yell at Secret, even she looked shocked.
"My favorite movie is the Avengers." He growled, "My favorite color is red, and I swear to all the Gods, Jackson, if you every do this again I will shove you down the myrmekes' ant hill, and laugh as they eat you alive."
Forge the down his hood and Charles Beckendorf glared at Percy. Percy couldn't help but laugh.
"Noted." Percy said, though he doubted Beckendorf would actually do it. But on second thought...maybe he would.
Even after all this time it hurt, to see him. A pain in his gut. He was the reason Beckendorf was dead, instead of alive. Even after going through everything he had, another war, Tartatrus, gaining a brother abs losing him, dying, it still haunted him that he couldn't save Beckendorf.
"I guess that makes it pretty obvious who I am." Secret rolled her eyes pulling down her hood and letting her ebony hair out. Silena Beauregard set her head on Beckendorf's shoulder which seemed to calm him down.
Halo turned to Percy, thumbing his arrow, again. "He called you Jackson." Halo noted.
Percy shrugged. "Guilty." He grinned revealing his face. Halo dropped his arrow. Selina muffled a giggle into Beckendorf's side.
"Percy?!" Revenge choked.
"How many other demigods do you know who can manipulate water?"
"Well...not a lot." Castor put his ice pack on the table and leaned back in his chair. Grapevine flicked off his hood, and Castor started back at everyone.
Revenge stared at him blankly, "Who are you?"
Castor's frown deepened. He looked hurt. "Great thanks." He said sarcastically. "It's nice to be remembered."
"You...you died in the Battle at Camp Half Blood right?" Beckendorf said snapping his fingers as if that would revive the memory, "I remember....Castor or something, right? Son of Demeter."
"Dionysus."
"Gesundheit." Revenge said, "But back to Percy-- how did you die?!"
"Sorry I'm not suppose to talk to sketchy people wearing hoods." Percy said shrugging.
Revenge gritted his teeth. For a couple seconds Percy watched him battle with himself, before he tossed down his hood. Ethan Nakamura flinched like he was expecting everyone to grab a sword and slice him in half.
The rest of the Elite just looked at him. Percy wasn't even surprised. It made sense. Revenge...Ethan was the son of the goddess of Revenge.
Ethan didn't look that much different. He still had his glossy black hair, but his eye patch was gone. Chaos must have given his eyes back when Ethan agreed to join the Elite.
Slowly, cautiously, Ethan looked around. He looked honestly surprised no one wanted to slap him. "I expect story time after this, Jackson." Ethan said trying to act crossed, but a smile edged into his glare. His shoulders relaxed.
That made Percy grin. He was relaxed. He glanced at the Elite, and was relieved to see they were all also relaxed, except for Hero, who looked even more tense.
"Come on, Hero." Beckendorf prodded him, "Your turn."
"Since when we're we taking turns?!" Ethan asked.
Silena shrugged an I-don't-know and kicked her feet onto the table. Everyone looked at Hero respectively. Waiting.
Luke sank deeper into his cloak, "No." He said, "I've done bad things. Really bad things."
Both Ethan and Silena shared a look and burst into laughter. It was strange. Yesterday, or even thirty minutes ago, this would've been an impossible scenario. Revenge and Secret, getting along? Beckendorf didn't even look slightly annoyed.
"Please," Silena flickered her hands out.
"You've done bad things?" Ethan smirked.
"Worse." Luke insisted, "I'm responsible for all of your deaths."
Percy pointed to himself, "Not me!"
"Almost everyone," he clarified, "I almost got you like ten times, though."
"Yeah you and just about every other demigod and monster I know."
"Still not happening." Hero crossed his arms and leaned against the wall, "And there's nothing you can do about it."
"Oh I wouldn't say nothing..." Halo stood up and stretched taking an extra amount time on purpose, then he smirked.
"Hero is Luke Castellan, and he's being a big baby about it, " he said, smirking as Luke looked at him betrayed, "But here's the thing, Luke is a Hero. And if anyone says otherwise, I will shove this exploding arrow down their throat and laugh as their body slowly and painfully tries to put itself back together over the course off two days." Halo flashed a grin at them, "That includes you, as well, Luke."
Luke opened and closed his mouth like a fish out of water. "That's a violation of the rules."
"What rules?"
"I don't know!" Luke snapped, "But now you have to reveal yourself too."
Halo scoffed sarcastically, "No, I'm just going to sit here and waste the rest of my undead life because Percy Jackson wouldn't let us out." He flicked down his hood, allowing everyone to see Michel Yew rolling his eyes.
Percy winced, "Is there anyone on this team who's death I want witness to?"
Castor looked thoughtful. "Not mine I don't think."
"That's not helpful." If anything Percy felt worse, "I'm like the cause of half of yours deaths."
Luke snorted finally pulling down his hood and slouching into the chair next to Silena. "Uh hello? If I'd hadn't-"
"Don't even start!" Silena interrupted, "If I hadn't given you tips from inside, That wouldn't have happened."
"If I'd been a better boyfriend I would've noticed." Beckendorf mumbled.
"If I'd hadn't been so caught up in revenge for the unclaimed demigods and cabin-less minor gods, Kronos wouldn't have been able manipulate me so far." Ethan stared at table.
Percy rubbed his neck, "If I hadn't-"
"ALRIGHT!" Castor cut in, "We get it! You guys are sorry! No need to make a competition out of it!"
The room was quiet.
"But if it was a competition," Michael said, "I think I win."
Castor gave him a glare but Percy was confused. "You?"
"Yeah, me. If I hadn't argued with Clarisse over that stupid flying chariot -which was totally the Apollo Cabin's- then the Ares Cabin would've been fighting along side us in the Battle. Clarisse alone would've saved like ten demigods and at least five satyrs."
Percy and Luke looked at Michael with grudging shock. Luke broke the silence by tossing his hands in the air and sarcastically claiming, "Wow, great job Thantos."
For some reason that made the entire room burst into laughter. It wasn't even that funny to Percy, mainly because they were talking about deaths, but he couldn't swallow his chuckle at the sound of Beckendorf laughing, which was a deep rumbling sound. Then Silena accidentally snorted, which set off another bout of laughter and caused Castor to fall out of his chair completely.
"Halo..." Castor gasped between laughter, "...I'm going...to need...some medical...attention...."
"It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye." Ironically Revenge was the one that said that, calmly down the near tears Elite Soldiers. "But enough of this I want to know how Percy died after everything I did for him."
"Did for me?" Percy exclaimed, "You tried to hit my Achilles heel with a poisoned dagger, and turned on me almost every time I gave you help."
"It made you a better swordsman."
Percy scoffed and rolled his eyes, "Whatever Revenge," Percy cleared his throat, "It started me training with Achilles-"
"Who's Achilles?" Beckendorf frowned.
"My brother, so-"
"When did you get a brother?" Silena interrupted.
Percy sighed and started again, this time from the very beginning. Starting with when Katie was dangling Travis from a vine right before Achilles reached camp.
The Chaos's soldiers listened intently. At the end they looked at him. And the room was quiet. No tapping feet, Michel had abandoned his arrow, even Silena was paying the most attention.
"What?" Percy asked.
"That's it?" Ethan asked.
"Uh yeah."
Luke looked outraged, "five years! I spent five years trying to kill you- the scorpion, multiple sword fights- and you died because you got stabbed in the back?!"
Ethan glared at Percy, "You couldn't have died a little more fancier or-"
Just then Bianca barged in out of breath. She slammed the door open which hit Michel in the nose. Who knew he knew so many Greek curses? She stumbled against the table heaving in oxygen.
Percy glanced back at Ethan, who seemed to swallow whatever he'd been saying. Percy frowned, was he turning pink? What? Ethan noticed him staring and sent him a glare, before quickly turning away.
"Bianca!" Luke exclaimed, "What happened? Are you all right?"
"Hang on how'd you get through the door?" Castor said looking at Percy with an irritated frown.
Bianca looked at him like he was stupid, "It... was... open."
Everyone looked at Percy, who nervously laughed.
"What." Beckendorf snapped.
"Well to be honest I didn't know Bianca's favorite color either so you could've said anything." Percy shrugged.
Lucky for Percy, before they could all pounce and kill him (again) Bianca leaned in front of him.
"Killing him...for whatever...reason...can wait..." She gasped, "I just ran...like the...entire complex. Wow." Bianca bent over taking in one huge breath and letting it out, "Is there a reason you guys all have your hoods down? Did I miss something?"
"Not really." Michel said, "Are you feeling alright?"
Bianca smiled brilliantly, "Better than you know. I found it, guys."
"Found what?" Silena asked, mirroring everyone else's confused looks.
Bianca turned to Percy pulling down her hood, so he could see the excitement and mirth in her eyes, "Zoë's secret stash. We can save Huntress."
"No way." Castor's face lit up like someone had just given him the world. Of course, Percy remembered about his secret admiration for their slowly doing team member, "Where?"
Her eyes flashed briefly, "Camp Half Blood."
