Part Sixteen
Paul throws the chair and the glass finally cracks enough for the pressure of the water to push it outwards.
The entire side shatters and water comes pouring out. Casey, Bridgette, and Macie are pulled along with the water as it escapes the enclosed space.
Jamie's body is slumped against the far corner of the box.
Wilson rushes inside what is left of the box and checks for a pulse. He can not find one. He continues trying to wake her up anyways. He isn't going to stop trying. He smacks her cheek lightly, hoping it will shock her awake.
In the movies, Jamie would wake up and kiss Wilson for coming to her rescue. However, this isn't the movies and this isn't a romantic comedy.
"Bridgette is dead." Paul announces after checking for a pulse. Casey vomits water while pressed up on her hands and knees. She was able to hold her breath long enough to only take in a few breaths of water and not lose consciousness. "So is Macie." Paul sighs while looking at the two of them. It is a very sad sight to see.
Macie was only sixteen years old. Bridgette was only eighteen. Their lives were only beginning and now they are over.
Casey stands herself up after coughing and gasping for air. She stumbles over to the two girls and attempts life-saving tactics. Failing to make any difference in their conditions, she moves over to Jamie and Wilson.
"Casey sit down girl. You almost just died. Take care of yourself." Paul tries to get the tired girl to relax.
"I'm a nurse. I'm trained to take care of others before myself." Casey explains. "Okay, put her on her back." She instructs Wilson.
Paul can't help but think about how badass Casey is. She is putting others' lives before her own life. She was born for this job. She was born to be a hero.
Casey, like Wilson, is unable to find a pulse. She takes a deep breath and blows into Jamie's mouth, hoping to get her heart beating and eventually getting her to breathe again.
She lifts her head off of her mouth and places her ear over her heart, listening for the beating to start again.
Casey repeats this process over and over, not losing hope that she can save Jamie.
She hasn't been able to save anyone else and is feeling extremely wasted. She is beginning to regret ever going to medical school. She feels like a failure because she hasn't saved any lives and she had numerous chances to do so.
Casey is really trying her hardest to revive the nineteen-year-old but she is having problems breathing because of the water in her tired lungs.
"Casey don't kill yourself by trying to save her." Paul tries to get the girl to look out for herself for a change.
Despite feeling short of breath and extremely weak, Casey continues trying to revive Jamie. She knows she can do it. She just needs to get her heart beating and then she can relax a little bit.
She administers mouth-to-mouth on Jamie for a total of five minutes. That does not seem like a long time but it is extremely unlikely to revive someone after one minute much less five minutes. That is a long time when you are talking about blowing air into someone else's lungs. It takes a lot of effort to do so.
"I can't do it. I'm sorry. She's dead. I'm so sorry." Casey lays back on the ground, gasping for air and struggling to take deep breaths. She feels lightheaded and dizzy. Her body is exhausted from trying to stay afloat and from fighting to stay alive. Trying to save three lives also tired the girl out. She can't take much more.
But Wilson is not going to give up on saving Jamie.
"I didn't want our first kiss to be like this." Wilson whispers before taking over for Casey and giving Jamie mouth-to-mouth in a desperate attempt to save her life.
He continues what Casey was unable to do, hoping that she just needs a few more breaths in her in order to breathe on her own.
AN: so we are down to just a few people left... who will be the next to go?
