The Isle of the Lost

"Okay. Okay!" Mal says. "I...I guess you're coming." She wipes her last tear away.

"Thank you." I tell her. She looks back at me and a bit of her old smirk comes back.

"Nice jacket, but it's not enough. You're wearing jeans already, that's good." She sighs and rubs her forehead. "I'm not E, but here." She pulls one of Evie's older pale blue shirts out and throws it at me. "That'll do."

"You're sure this will get us there?" I ask her.

She turns back. "Not at all. But it's all I've got. Just going to say... on the Isle, magic doesn't work. I'm not entirely sure if that stretches to yours. You sure about this?"

"Positive." I climb onto the purple bike behind her. She blows out once and opens her spellbook. She's still crying a bit, so her voice sounds stuffy when she says, "Noble steed, proud and fair, you shall take me anywhere." She breathes in and closes the book, putting her goggles on and starting her bike.

"You ready, Ellie?"

"Yes."

"Okay. Please work." She mutters. Then she starts her bike and drives right onto the water, trailing behind green sparks. We're moving way faster than I thought we would, and I look back at Auradon once. It doesn't look so bad, from here. It's beautiful.

Then we hit the barrier.

And when I say hit, I literally mean hit. Green magic crawls from where we crossed in, and I almost fall of the bike from the backlash. Mal looks back.

"Hang on, we're almost there." She says. She doesn't look like she's been crying now. We rocket past trashy beaches and filthy stores. People shriek when they see Mal coming and dive out of the way. Mal's laughing and she doesn't stop or slow down. One person makes a squealy sound when they duck out of the way, and I find this so funny I actually laugh. Mal glances back.

"See what I mean?" She calls. We finally stop next to a poster of her and Ben. She curls her lip in disgust and rips the paper off the wall. she balls it up and drops it on the ground. We keep going then until she brings us into a garage, sort of. She gets out with her helmet under her arm. I follow her as she picks a rock up and throws it at a "Danger, flying rocks" sign. The rock hits the sign and sends it backwards a little. The wire gate next to us opens up.

"This was where we stayed when we didn't want to be near our parents." She tells me.

"Like an apartment?"

"Sort of." She leads me up the stairs until we get to a huge space. I can clearly pick out which rooms are for who.

"You paint all these?" I ask, running my hand along a picture of the four of them. She nods and sets her helmet down. She runs a hand through her blonde hair.

"It feels so great to be back here." She says under her breath. She twirls her finger through her hair again and pauses.

"How would you feel at meeting another Isle kid?" She asks.

"Who?"

"Daughter of Drizella." She smiles and takes a deep breath in. "Dizzy. She does hair. And..." She lets go of her hair. "I definitely need it."

I laugh. "Yeah, that blonde is really a stretch from your old purple. Sure, I'll come. Why not?"

She grins.

"Okay, it should only be Dizzy in here. But Stepmother would be fine, too." She stops at a sign that says closed until midnight. "Ha! They haven't taken this down yet." She ignores the sign and pushes the door open. I look up at the sign.

Lady Tremaine's Curl up and Dye.

Fun.

I follow Mal inside, then past some weird paint-covered plastic. I grin at the inside. It's covered in paint, and there's a girl with bright red hair sweeping around with headphones on. I nudge Mal.

"That Dizzy?"

Mal smiles and nods. "That's Dizzy." She steps inside and Dizzy looks up.

"Mal!" She takes her headphones off. "Is Evie back too?"

Mal laughs. "As if."

Mal doesn't see it, but Dizzy deflates. I wonder how well Evie knows this girl.

"I forgot that you guys don't open 'till midnight." Mal says. She looks around. "Place looks good."

Dizzy smiles and nods. Mal walks further in. "So what is your deal? Has your grandmother given you any customers yet?"

"Just a witch here and there." Dizzy says. "Mostly it's a lot of scrubbing, scouring, and sweeping. Lots and lots of sweeping."

"Sounds like real Cinderella treatment." Mal says. I stay in the doorway, not quite sure what I'm supposed to do once Dizzy sees me.

Mal notices. "Oh, Diz, that's Ellie." She points. Dizzy turns and lights up when she sees me.

"I know! The Ice Queen deal was huge news here. Nobody could believe that and Auradon kid helped you guys almost take over!" She says excitedly. "You're really popular here." She tells me. "Can you really do magic?"

I laugh and walk further in. Mal was right, Dizzy's sweet. "I'm not sure if I can still do it on the Isle. I haven't tried yet."

"Can you try?" She pleads. "I think your magic is so cool, I wish I had powers! All I got was a flare for fashion." She poses to show off her dress. I have to admit, she does look really good. I can't help but laugh.

"You're like a mini Evie." I tell her. She seems to grow with that and Mal smiles at me. Dizzy beams and Mal speaks up.

"Hey, Dizzy, you used to do Evie, right?"

"Yeah! I thought of the little braids!" Dizzy says.

"Do you have any ideas for me?" Mal asks.

Dizzy makes an L with her fingers in front of Mal's face. Then she walks forward and takes a piece of Mal's hair. "The washed-out blonde with purple tips? The best of no worlds!" She lets go of Mal's hair again. "You can't see where you face ends and your hair begins!"

I snort and Dizzy smiles at me. Mal goes and sits in the chair facing the mirror, and Dizzy grabs her hands. "Oh, what is this? Bored-to-death-pink?" She comments on Mal's fingernails. She spins the chair around so Mal's back is to her. "How far can I go?"

"The works." Mal says. "I mean, whatever makes me feel like me, but you know..." She looks up at Dizzy. "Way worse."

"Yay!" Dizzy says. She grabs a huge pair of scissors and turns back to Mal. I almost giggle at the look on Mal's face.

Over the next half-hour, almost forty-five minutes, Dizzy transforms Mal. She dyes her hair back to purple, then cuts a bunch of it off, then puts a bunch of curlers in it, then does her nails (Which Mal rolled her eyes at), and then Dizzy did a big reveal.

"Wow, Dizzy, that looks great!" I tell her. And it does. Mal's hair is once again purple, but it's straight and has bangs in front. It's a lighter shade this time too, and Mal's chewing gum as well.

Dizzy does a cute little bow. "Thanks! What do you think, Mal?"

Mal gets off the chair and close to the mirror. "Hey! There I am!" She laughs and turns to Dizzy.

"Voila!" Dizzy says.

"Voila." Mal repeats. Dizzy beams then turns to me.

"Am I doing you, too?" She asks. "Because I have so many ideas. For one---"

"Diz, she just came along." Mal says. "Unless you want to?" She asks me. I take one look at Dizzy's hopeful face and smile.

"Okay. Why not? Just don't cut any of my hair, please." I tell Dizzy. "Other than that, go wild."

"I love you!" She screams, hugging me.

Mine doesn't take as long, only about twenty minutes tops. She doesn't curl mine, but she does put some sort of dye in. Despite what I said, she does end up cutting a bit off, saying that "layers would look great on me." Mal watches the whole time, smiling each time Dizzy makes a comment about my lack of style. Dizzy even supplies me with some jewelry that she doesn't use. My big reveal is a bit more subdued, but even Mal looks pleased.

"Hey! Now you really look like one of us." She laughs. "Great job, Diz."

Dizzy beams and looks at me. "Do you like it?"

I try and see myself in the broken-up mirror. My hair is still mostly white, but it's shorter and wavy, not the mess of curls I normally have. Blue dye streaks down the white every so often, and some of it is pulled back and twisted up. I grin.

"Looks great." I tell Dizzy. "What color dye is that, I might want some more."

She grins. "It's called 'Blizzard Blue.' And it's for sale if you want it!"

"Not now, Diz." Mal says. "But here." She takes some money out of her pocket.

"For me?" Dizzy asks.

"Yeah! You earned it." Mal says.

Dizzy giggles and starts skipping over to the cash register. "Fork it over, ya runt." A boy in red leather and a pirate hat appears in the doorway. He has a hook on his hand. Hook's kid, duh. I wonder what his name is?

Dizzy loses her happiness and hands over the money. He taps the table with his hook. "And the rest of it." Dizzy opens the register and hands him some more.

"Mm!" He says, then turns to leave. "Thank you. Mm-hm!"

"Still running errands for Uma?" Mal calls. "Or do you actually get to keep what you steal?"

The hook kid turns around slowly and grins. "Well, well, well. What a nice surprise!"

"Hi, Harry." Mal says.

"Just wait until Uma hears you're back." He walks close to Mal and grins greedily at her. "She's never gonna give you back your old territory."

Mal scrunches her nose up as if puzzled. "Oh. Well, that's ok. Because, I will be taking it." She says.

Harry scoffs and runs his hook through her purple hair. "I could hurt you." He tells her.

Her hand slams down on his hook. She takes the gum out of her mouth and puts it on the tip of the hook. "Not without her permission, I bet." She says, sticking her bottom lip out.

Harry gives a tight smile and turns to leave when he sees me. "Oh! And lookee here! Who's this lass?"

Mal turns to me. I don't want to give my name, but it's only a matter of time before he figures it out anyway. "No one special." I tell him. His silver eyes stare at me. He grins.

"Oh, I do know ya! Yer that Ice Queen! From Boradon!" he laughs madly. "Uma'll love this."

I glare at him and go over what Mal said in my head. From what she told him, I'd say he follows orders from the Uma girl. And he carries his hook around...

I grab his hook away and throw it across the room. "Fetch." I tell him. Mal grins. Dizzy clamps her hands over her mouth to stifle her giggle. I note the ice rimming the edge of the hook when Harry retrieves it. So my powers do work here.

Harry fits his hook back onto his hand starts to leave. On his way out, he swipes a hand across Dizzy's table, sending everything flying to the floor. He bows dramatically. Then he leaves.

"Great. More sweeping." Dizzy says.

"Don't worry, Diz." Mal says. "Just have Ice Queen here do it." I glare at her and she laughs. "Kidding. We're going back to the apartment, if you wanna come Dizzy."

Dizzy smiles but gestures at the floor. "I gotta get this away before grandmother comes back. Thanks for letting me do your hair, though!"

Mal nods and leaves the store. I take a bit of the money I brought with me and hand it to Dizzy. "Thanks for everything." I tell her. She smiles and slips it into her pocket.
