Pep Talk: FAIL

(The book above is the one in this chapter)

I push through the crowd to get to the door before her. But she beats me.

"Elicia." She grabs hold of my arm. The crowd starts to disperse a little, going to Ben to question him. A few reporters are following me and Mom, so I roll my eyes and pull her inside, closing the doors in their faces.

"What, Mom? What could be so important?" I snap.

She wrings her hands. "I know I haven't exactly been a good mother lately... and I'm sorry for that."

"A good mother? Mom, you've been terrified of me! Do you know what that felt like?"

"I do, actually. You forget, my entire kingdom thought I was a monster." She says, rather cooly.

"I know." I sigh. "Well, what did you want?"

"Well... Elicia, do you know why I had Fairy Godmother take my powers away when you were a child?"

"No. I just assumed you got scared." I admit.

"I did it because of you. You remember I hit my sister in the head when we were children?"

"Yeah." Where could she be going with this?

"I hit you." She whispers. She hugs herself. "You'd broken Anna's wedding gift to me, and I was so angry... I moved to strike you once and instead I used my powers on you."

"I don't remember that." I frown. "You lost your powers when I was five. I remember most of my life then."

"Trolls, Elicia. Trolls." she reminds me. "But I didn't hit your head. I hit your heart."

"But... I should have frozen! Shouldn't I?"

She shakes her head. "Elicia, tell me this. Do you remember using your powers before I lost mine?"

I think back. "No..."

"You weren't born with yours. I gave you the more dangerous part of mine." She says.

"You... what?" My brain throbs. Where could she be going with this?

"Elicia, your powers are half of mine. I chose to get rid of the rest in hopes that it would dissolve from you as well. After Anna and I defeated Hans, and we got older, I discovered my powers split equally in half. One, the more dangerous side, the one that I used to fight the Duke's henchmen with, the side that..." She seems to choke on the name. "Oh, I should get Olaf back for this... the side that Marshmallow came from, the side that created a storm that nearly swallowed Arendelle.

"And the second side, the peaceful one. The one I used to create Olaf, the one I created my castle with, the side I used for my sister's birthday."

"Mom, what are you talking about? What has this got to do with me?"

"Elicia, when I gave you that side, you got more than I thought. You have powers I would never have had, you can do things I can't! Elicia, I saw you at Ben's coronation. Just for an instant. And the garden party, my powers---now your powers---changed you! You know why I'm terrified? Why I look at you the way I do? Because I'm scared that those powers may be affecting you in ways you may not know."

"Mom, I'm still me. I promise." I protest.

"Elicia, what happens when you get angry?" She asks.

"One, you can call me Ellie. All this 'Elicia' business is weird. Two, nothing happens. I mean, some misty stuff comes from my hands," I raise one to examine it. "But it's not like I look at myself to see the results every time."

She sighs. "And nobody has informed you that when you get angry, your eyes glow blue?"

"What?" I mean, I guess I knew that part. I kinda remember it happening. "So what?"

"Have you not read the book I gave you last christmas?" She asks, putting her hands on her hips.

"Uh, no. I didn't have time."

She sighs. "If you had, you would know that blue means a curse is in you." She goes to the scared woman again. "Ellie... if I'm right... you could be dying."

___________________________________________

It's one thing to know that, years from now, when you're old and have lived a life, that you'll eventually die.

But it's an entirely different thing to be told that that timeline has been moved to now. To right in front of your face, waving it's arms, begging all your attention, leaving all your strength drained to try and focus on getting yourself prepared for something you'll never be prepared for.

And the last thing you'll realize is,

I don't want to die.

Nobody ever really wants to die. They may say they do. They may force it by their own hands. But life is a delicate thing, bending and breaking thousands of times a day based on your choices, your actions, and your history.

People have been raised on the fact that life is something you can control, if you're careful enough.

But nobody ever counts on change. On chance. On bad luck, in a split second that can send you life shattering to sand.

I don't want to die.

Too bad I don't have a choice.

"So, tell me again. You mom, Queen Elsa, gave you a bad side of her powers when you were a kid, and now they're somehow cursed?" Ben says slowly.

"Yes." I've been in this office for three hours at least, in the same position with my hands locked around my knees.

"And your mom thinks you're dying?"

"Right."

Ben sighs and sits down in his chair. "I don't know what to tell you. I've had servants look this up, I've asked my dad, I've asked my mom, I've consulted every possible thing I can think of!" He runs a hand down his face. "I'm so sorry. Nobody knows anything."

"Well... my mom said she gave me a book." I say slowly. "I'm sure I can find it."

Ben sits up fast. "Don't tell anyone about this, Ellie." he warns.

I rub my wrist as I cross my fingers behind my back. "Promise."

"All right. Go see if you can find it. I'm going to contact Peter Pan and see if he knows anything." Ben looks exhausted, and I don't blame him. I nod and jump up, running from the room. I know I probably shouldn't, but I have to tell someone other than him or I'll go crazy. I can't keep a secret as big as this for long, especially when I don't even know how long my mom's deadline is.

I walk through the halls, my hand clutching at a chunk of my hair to keep from shaking. Is my mom right? Am I cursed somehow? Why? It's never hurt me. My powers have never hurt me.

I fume as I walk down the hall. How could my mother spring this on me right after I just got kidnapped? I still have to help Sera!

Oh, no. Sera.

I clap my hand against my forehead. I completely forgot to help her get Arson!

I run down the halls, listening for yells and explosions. I luckily don't hear any, but I do find Sera. I run into her. Literally.

"OY! Watch where you're goin', ya---oh! Icy!" Sera laughs and helps me up. "Was lookin' for you just now. Arson's out, Mal let 'im go just a bit ago. He wanted to meet you after he heard you'd seen Lord of the Rings."

"That's it?" I ask. "Mal just...let him go? Shouldn't Ben be the one---"

Sera waves it away. "Yeah, yeah, Benny shoulda, but Ar was freakin' out. He's fine now though. He is loving his new powers."

"What powers do you guys have, anyway?" I ask. "Other than blowing stuff up."

"Blowin' stuff up is the best!" Sera cackles, leading me outside. "But we can make people hurt, and our sportsy abilities are, like, timesed five now." To prove it, she scrutinzes the ceiling and leaps higher than she did on the ship, punching a huge hole in the plaster and landing hard next to me.

"Ben's going to make you pay for that." I point out.

She shrugs. "Don't care. Now, c'mon. You have to meet Ar properly."

"But I needed to find Carlos---" I start.

"Pfft. Your boyfriend's out here. You can talk to him." She tugs me along. I grudgingly follow. I'd hoped to talk to him alone in case he reacts with a yell or something. I see Arson jumping up and down fifty feet in the air and catching birds, and I almost laugh. He sees me and grins wide.

"Icy!" he yells, running and crushing my ribs in a hug.

"Hi." I squeak. Sera laughs loud.

"A'ight, Ar, put her down." She pats his massive back and he sets me down.

"Ice?" He asks eagerly.

"Icy had better not be my new nickname." I warn.

"Too late." Sera says sadly. "It's stuck." She grins. "But he's not saying your name, he wants to see your powers. It's all he talks about on the Isle, he thinks it's the coolest thing ever."

"Well, it is ice..." I say innocently.

"You know I didn't actually mean cool!" Sera complains. I see Carlos holding back laughter behind her, along with Mal and Evie. Evie sees me looking and waves.

"You seen Rings?" Arson asks.

I nod. "What other movies did you guys see on the Isle?"

Sera wrinkles her nose. "Uhh... I don't remember. I know we saw the first two Rings movies... and this other one with these weird characters, this kid named Percy and a girl named...uh... Annabell?"

"Annabeth!" I say. "Percy Jackson! Which one'd you see?"

"Uhhh..."

Ar makes a swiping motion. "KABOOM!"

"Lightning Thief?" He nods. "Have you read the books?"

"Pirates can't read!" Mal yells.

"I ain't full pirate, sweetheart!" Sera yells back. "Ar can't, but I can. Some. But, no. Never read the books."

"You're missing out. The movies went waaaaaay off the books." I say. "What was the other movies you saw?"

"Umm..." Sera scratches her head. "There was one that was really good. There was this guy that died. And he came back. And this drunkard killed this guy with, like, extra fingers."

"The Princess Bride!" I squeal. I've forgotten about my mom's talk in my excitement. "You guys have seen that?"

"That's the name." Sera says. "I liked that one. I think those are the only ones we watched before De Vil's signal kicked off."

Carlos shrugs. "It's a magic barrier. What do you expect?"

I roll my eyes. "That's not important. You guys have seen Princess Bride! You are literally the only people I know who have seen it!" I raise my hand for a high-five and, shrugging, Sera obliges. I yelp when she hits it and shake my hand around in the air.

"You have a nasty slap!" I say. I look at my palm and my heart nearly stops when I see a glowing blue cut in the center of my palm.

But Sera doesn't notice and puts her arm over her brother's shoulder. "Eh. What can I say?"

"Ellie?" Carlos asks when I continue to stare at my hand. "Are you okay?"

I look up at him. He's the only one that's noticed, Sera and Arson are talking and laughing. Evie and Mal left somewhere in between.

I press my other hand against my stomach to remind myself to breathe. "I need to talk to you." I gasp out, grabbing him and running.

"What? Why? Ellie?" Carlos asks, but I don't stop until I get to my room and I make sure Brit and Dude aren't there. Then I shove my hand in his face.

"Look at this!" I practically scream. His eyes go wide and he stares at it.

"Wait... Blue means---"

"Cursed. Yeah, I got that already." I say.

"Wait---but, why are you---"

"Don't know. My mom just came up and told me I'm going to die!" I yell.

"Wait, what?" Carlos says. His voice cracks.

I put my hand down. "My mom told me that she gave me my powers when I was a kid, and somehow they're cursing me now, so she thinks I'm going to die." I start searching my bookshelf for the book. I know which one she's talking about at least. A big one with a golden-brown cover.

"Ellie, what are you saying?" Carlos asks, putting a hand on my shoulder and turning me back to him. I throw him off me and turn back me, and he pulls me back again more forcefully.

"Ellie. What is going on?" he pleads.

I almost start crying and bite down hard on my bottom lip to stop them. "My mom said it'd be in the book..." I say weakly. He lets go of me and starts rifling through the shelf.

"What's it look like?"

"Brown cover. Gold markings." I say, kneeling beside him. He pulls one off the shelf.

"This?"

"Yeah." I grab it and run my hand over the cover. Anna's Guide To Magic and Mayhem. "My Aunt Anna wrote this for my mom, 'cuz she wanted to know of all the available powers and what they do." I open it up and run down the chapters. Chapter 20, Ice and Winter.

"This should tell us..." I whisper, sinking down on the ground and leaning against the bookshelf, flipping to the page number. Carlos moves beside me.

"Here!" I put my finger on it and start reading shakily. "Of the existing powers, Ice and Winter is the one I'm most familiar with. Able to create ice, snow, and mist in solid waves, and able to freeze and contain almost anything, these powers are among the most dangerous in the wrong hands.

"Creating snowmen? Eternal winter? A castle, clothes, and a way of transportation if used right, my sister Elsa's powers is by far the most enchanting. Recognizable by it's blue or white glow, it has a few downsides. When hitting a person..." I stop and look up. "I'm going to look for the thing we need. One sec." I scan the page. "Wait. Here we go."

"When transferred to you by a curse, not born with, Ice and Winter will eventually kill its host." I glance up at Carlos, who just shakes his head. "It---It grows colder inside you, depending on how often you use them, and---and will freeze the host eventually. Signs that it may be on stage Five, Final stage, is tender skin that shines when cut, and ice appearing inside pupils.

"Once you get to stage Five, you have---" I choke and stop. "You have nearly a w-week if n-not taken c-care of b-before." I finish. I can't hold my tears now, so I slam the book shut.
