Cookies, Monsters

"Lonnie. Hey. Lonnie." I snap my fingers in front of her face. She blinks in surprise then turns to me.

"What? Sorry, I was dozing off."

I nod towards our History teacher. "He asked you a question."

Lonnie goes pink. "Can you repeat that, please?"

Cogsworth sighs. Why they picked him to substitute today, I have no idea. He has absolutely no patience. "When did King Adam build this school?"

Lonnie chews on her lip. "Um. Around 300 years ago?" I bite my lip to keep from laughing. The only reason any of us know that fact is from King Adam's speech he gives.

"The correct time would be better, but yes. You hit it close. WHAT TIME IS IT?" he yells. the thing about Cogsworth is that he never has a watch on him, for some reason.

"5:55." We all chorus.

He sighs. "You all are dismissed early. But remember you have a test tomorrow at exactly 8:04 on the dot!"

All of us scramble to pack up and sprint out the door. Lonnie catches my arm first. "Wait! Ellie, can you help me? You do this all so easily. Is there some way I can study with you tonight?"

I smile. "Sure! Do you want to come to my room? Or should we go to yours? Because Jane right now..." A sour feeling comes up in my stomach. Jane's been acting a lot different now. Ever since the hair, she's been hanging out with Audrey more and spending time with me less. ANd she sends me dirty looks every time I get near her.

Lonnie doesn't notice my change in attitude. "Sure! Come by my dorm around 7:00, ok? On the dot!" She says, imitating Cogsworth.

I laugh and wave goodbye. I walk back to my dorm and find Jane and Audrey in there.

"Oh! Hi Audrey. Jane. What are you guys doing here, I thought you were going to go watch tourney practice?" I say. I tug on my gloves as best I can.

Audrey scoffs. "It's her dorm, Ice Queen."

"I realize that, Sleeping Ugly." I snap. "Jane, why is Audrey here?"

Jane smirks. "Um, because we're studying? Duh. And this is my dorm, I can have who I want in here. And at least I have friends I can bring in here, Ice Queen."

"I have friends!" I shout. I clench my fists to fight my urge to pull my gloves off.

"Yeah, VK's!" Audrey says. "We've always said that you'd go there, but we everyone knows the VK's are planning something bad, and you're  involved. Don't deny it."

"I don't have to, because I'm not!" I yell. Tears gather in my eyes and freeze on my skin. What happened to Jane? "The VK's aren't like you think! They don't want to hurt us!"

Jane snorts and tosses her hair. "Says you. Your deadline was yesterday. The second you give someone the reason, they'll have to force you to give them up. Get 'em away now, before you embarrass yourself!"

A crackling sound reaches my ears. I look down to find my gloves made of ice. I tap them and they both shatter onto my dorm floor. Jane and Audrey stare at the remains. Then they both burst into wild laughter.

"This proves it! You can't control them, Ice Queen!" Audrey points at the melting shards. "Go ahead! Try and use your powers! I dare you!"

"No--I--" But my panic is too much, and ice starts to creep from where I stand, coating the room in sharp icicles. Audrey and Jane yelp and climb on top of Jane's bed. I close my eyes and focus on my mother's voice. You can do it, Ellie. You can bring it back. Love melts ice. Every time.

I open my eyes again to see the ice receding back to me. Audrey and Jane are nowhere in sight. I let a sob escape me and fall hard on my knees. It's too much. This is too much.

No. I breathe in and out slowly until I calm down. I stand shakily. I have to prove I can control them. I check my watch. Oh, jeez, how long was I sitting there? It's been and hour! It's past seven! I scramble to me feet and rush to Lonnie's dorm room. I knock on the door breathlessly and she opens it up a second later.

"Hi Ellie!" Then her smile drops. "Are you okay?"

"Um, yeah." I choke. I straighten up. "Why?"

"You look like you've been crying. And, um, when you cry, it's kind of obvious. C'mere." She pulls me to her mirror. She's not wrong, my eyes are rimmed in blue-ish pink.

"Ugh. Sorry. Just...Please ignore it. What do you want to work on first?" I plead.

She gives me a I-am-only-dropping-this-for-now look. "Why don't we start with villain stories? those are easy."

I roll my eyes. "Okay, I'm going to give you a scenario and you have to guess the villain, ok?"

"Sure."

"I'll get you, my pretty!"

"Wicked witch of the...West?" Lonnie guesses.

"Yep. Dorothy is the hero, guess that too from now on. It'll help." I tell her.

She breathes in. "Okay. Next one? Bring it on!"

"Ok, let's see... Ah! Achoo, zzz, hmph, yay, uhhh---"

"The dwarves!" She breaks in. "Snow White, and Evil Queen. You named Sneezy, Sleepy, Grumpy, Happy, and Dopey before I got it."

"Spot on." I smile. "Okay, this one's harder. Strange clouds?"

"Oh... I know this." She presses her hand into her forehead. "OH! Pocahontas! That's what she called the ships! And villain is... Ratcliffe!"

"Yep! Okay, last one. You've pretty much got this section." I sort through my notes and grin when I see one. "You should know this quote, it rated top 10 on funniest things to say. 'You don't meet a girl like that every dynasty'."

She gives me a look. "Seriously? My mom! And Shan-Yu is the villain."

I clap. "Nice! Okay, next round of questions... Kingdoms. Your mom?"

"China."

"Pocahontas?"

"England...and America, technically."

"My mother?"

"The North Mountain, technically, because she gave Arendelle to your Aunt Anna and Uncle Kristoff." She smiles.

"Phew! That was the last one. I recommend you look over dates and powers, though. I know everybody thinks Ariel can turn into a mermaid, but that was just to get her daughter Melody back. Triton turned her back, not herself." I look down at my watch. It's 9:00!

"I'm going to go get snacks. You want anything?" She asks, getting up.

I shrug. "I can't think of anything, but I am hungry. I'll come with you."

She smiles and links her arm through mine. "Cool! The kitchens are probably empty right now, we should have it to ourselves." She leads me downstairs and outside the kitchen door. "I hope I see Mal. I want to tell her what all the girls think of their hair!" I nod and we keep going. Voices float down the hallway as we make our way there.

"...protein-based hormones than a reflex tear." Evie's voice says.

"Listen to you!" Mal says.

"Yeah, I knew that." Jay's voice joins in.

"Did not." Carlos argues.

"Yeah, I did."

Lonnie pushes the door open and we walk inside. "Mal! There you are! I was looking for you. You know, all the girls want you to do their hair." I don't think Lonnie notices that all of them are suddenly fidgety, and that Mal not-so-discreetly covered something up with a napkin.

Lonnie leans forward to look at what Mal is making. It looks like cookie batter. "Midnight snack, huh? What you guys making?" She leans forward more and dips her finger into the batter.

"Nothing special, just cookiOH NO NO NO!" Mal yells with her friends.

Lonnie looks back in surprise. "What? I'm not gonna double-dip!" I look into the cookie bowl. I kinda wanna try some, but after their reaction, I'm not sure I should.

"Feel... anything?" Evie asks nervously.

"Yeah, like maybe it might be missing something?" Mal adds quickly.

Jay suddenly moves forward. "Hey there."

Lonnie watches him awkwardly for a second. "Could use some chips." She answers Mal and Evie. "Ellie? Chips?"

I nod and go to the fridge and pull out a cup of chocolate chips.

"Chips?" Jay asks.

Mal gives a huge sigh and slaps the table. "And those are...?"

I look weird at her. "Chocolate chips. Just the most important food group!" I roll my eyes and hand the bowl to Lonnie. Only I notice frost coats the bottom. But since it was in the fridge, Lonnie just grabs a handful and drops it into the cookie mix.

"Wait, didn't your mom ever make you guys like chocolate chip cookies?" she pops one into her mouth when they all turn to stare at her. "Like, when you're feeling sad, and they're fresh from the oven with a big old glass of milk and she just makes you laugh and puts everything into perspective and..." She notices all the sad looks on the VK's faces. "Why are you all looking at me like that?"

I want to signal her to stop. She has to shut up!

Mal shakes her head and starts stirring. "It's just different where we're from."

Lonnie glances around. "Well yeah, I know, I just--you know, I thought---even villains love their kids...?" she trails off. Mal looks ready to cry.

"Oh... How awful." Lonnie takes Mal's hand. I actually do start crying, and for once my tears don't freeze. Mal glances at me then lunges towards me, wiping the tear off my face and flicking it into the bowl.

"Yeah, well, big bummer, but we have to get these into the oven, so thank you so much for coming by, really! Really, have a good night. See you tomorrow, evil dreams!" she shoves us both out the door. I touch my now dry cheek and turn to Lonnie.

"Okay... that was weird." I admit. Lonnie nods.

Thank you so much for the few peoples that read this, I hope it doesn't disappoint! Please comment on what you think should happen, and what you actually think about the story!
