Back To Auradon
My dad stands there, blinking in surprise with his mouth wide open.
"Lissy?" He asks. That name snaps a jumble of memories in the back of my brain I hadn't even known I had. Memories of someone I'd thought was my mother holding me as a baby but I now realize this person is much too warm, and memories of someone laughing while holding me, I'm feeling safe, of whispering stories to me of all the gods before King Adam was picked...
And a name.
Lissy.
I'd thought that was a name I'd made up, for a doll maybe that I'd forgotten about.
"That name... that was you?" I ask.
I notice he's wringing his hands, so I walk over and grab his hands to stop it. He goes completely still, not even blinking as he stares at my hands. Then his eyes slide up to my face and he smiles just a tiny bit.
"I see you got your mother's looks, not mine." he whispers. I can't help myself and I laugh even though there's nothing funny in this situation.
"I mean, I'd been seeing pictures and things... that people have been putting out..." he mumbles. "I'm sorry."
"For what?" I ask, quite forgetting everything I've learned about my dad. I can't believe he's here. My father is right in front of me! I WAS TOLD HE WAS DEAD. My brain can't begin to follow...
"For not being there for you." He sighs and pulls his slender hands from mine. "I should have... I shouldn't have cared that..."
"People were scared." Mahina says. "It's not your fault for running."
He looks over at my oddball group. "Er... I may be behind the times. Sera? Is that you?"
She pretends to tip a hat. "Yep. You're technically---technically---sort of my uncle, right? Ish?"
He see-saws his hand back and forth. "Of sorts. Zeus, your grandad, is my brother."
"Eh." Sera says. "Then I'd be related to Icy here. That wouldn't be so bad. But if we counted all of the god-ish stuff... I'd be related to some pretty annoying people. I'm fine with just Ar."
I press a hand against where my heart is. "I'm wounded." I say in a sad voice.
Sera gives a bark of laughter. "A'ight, I'll take you and only you, Icy. But there is no way I am being related to Afro's kids."
"Afro?" Hades asks suspiciously.
"Aphrodite." Sera clarifies. "I thought her name was Afro- Dite. Not Ap-fro-dite-ee."
Hades' lip quivers for a second before he bursts into snorty guffaws. He leans over and slaps his leg a few times before straightening up, wiping a tear away. "Aphrodite's going to love you for that."
Sera looks surprised. "She is?"
"Oh, gods no. She'll hate you forever and try to have you fall in love with a lamppost or a dumpster. She always says the afro stage was an awful moment in time."
Sera grins then. "Too bad that stuff ain't ever worked on me."
"Vocabulary apparently hasn't either." Hades mutters. Sera just grins wider.
Merida walks over. "Had, Auradon is under attack."
Hades' face goes red. "From who? Is Elsa all right? Lissy--er, Elicia, is your mom all right?"
I wave the name away. "You can call me Lissy for all I care. But yeah, mom should be okay, I think she was back in her castle by the time Uma got there."
Hades visibly relaxes. "Good. Well, is this everybody that you could get to help?" He gestures to our sad group.
Mahina leans on the oar I hadn't noticed she'd brought. "Motunui was assured we could live in complete peace, so we had the option to stay if we wanted. Arendelle is under attack, so we came here before we go back to Auradon."
Hades nods. "I should have known there was something else underneath my daughter's sudden visit..." He glances sidelong at me and clears his throat. "Er, who is coming back to help?"
Maira shoulders her bag. "Me, mum, and my uncles. No need to make everybody else panic." She gives me a cold look before turning her back to me and stalking away.
Hades glances at me again and tries to straighten his suit. "Er, I'll go get dressed better... We'll meet at the dock in say, thirty minutes, Mer?"(Pronounced MARE, just so ya know...)
Merida nods. "And I'll contact..." She leans close to his ear and whispers something. He smiles weakly and walks off.
"Anyone else think that was very weird?" Sera asks.
Everyone turns to stare at her, including Merida.
"What? Icy here sees her dad, her dad sees her, and Maira is all 'this is stupid', and Hades is all 'gotta go, nice seein' ya, kid' and we're all just okay with storming Auradon with like twenty people?" Sera says.
Cue the continued staring.
Carlos clears his throat. "Uh, maybe we should just go down to the dock and wait for everybody."
"That'd probably be smart." Merida says. "My dad should be down there soon, but I know mum won't want to come. You all go down there, we'll be along soon."
We all nod and drag Sera's complaining-ness from the hall and back outside in the misty, cool air. We're waiting by Mahina and Kalia's ship when a man in a kilt and with a huge brown mustache comes up.
"Lady Merida says you's be taking a larger veesel." He says in a whiny voice. He points to a bigger ship and then trots off.
"So... all aboard, I guess?" Andy says. Krissy grins and runs up the plank onto the big ship, spreading her arms wide when she gets in the middle.
"I could live in this place." She says happily. Aunt Anna smiles and climbs on too, closely followed by Andy and Ella. Sera shrugs and gets on, followed by Mahina and Kalia. Carlos waits for me to get on before climbing up after me. He offers me his hand when we get on and I take it gratefully. This has been a hectic day.
"By the way," my dad appears in a poof of black smoke, making everyone but Kalia and Mahina scream in fright, "Carlos De Vil, right?"
Carlos looks confused. "Uh, yes."
"Just checking." He disappears with another poof.
"Uh... weird." Krissy says. "I WANNA LEARN HOW TO DO THAT!"
Anna runs her hand through Krissy's hair. "I don't think you can, sweetheart."
"Aw, yella-snow!"
"What?"
"Nothing!"
"Ha!" Sera says. "I like these midgets."
POOF. "Are we all ready to go?" Hades asks, looking around. He's no longer wearing the suit but looks very out of place in jeans and a leather jacket with his hiking boots. His hair is slicked back now.
"Almost." My Aunt says. "We're just waiting for Merida's family and then we'll leave for Auradon."
Maira comes up the dock with her uncles and her mom. "M'kay, we're leaving now. Anyone still out on shore, 'cuz we'll be leaving their butts behind if they're still there."
"No, I think they won't mind not being on the same boat as ya." Sera tells her.
I hold back a laugh. "Everybody's here." I tell Maira. She rolls her eyes and pulls the plank back onto the ship. The three triplets snap their fingers simultaneously and the ropes on the ship bounce about.
"How'd you do--ACK!" Sera ducks as a wood pole swings over her head. "How'd you do that? I thought magic didn't exist anymore!"
"Auradon chose to leave it be." Maira says, rolling her eyes again. "We chose not to."
"Mai!" Merida scolds. "Stop it."
"What?"
I decide I don't particularly like Merida's daughter. She sticks her tongue out at me and my friends when her mom's back is turned. The triplets snicker and poke each other at that.
The boat starts to sail by itself and Merida's dad yells from the dock. "OI! Wait fer me!"
The boat screeches to a halt a foot away from the dock and Merida's dad throws himself on. "Leavin' without me?"
"No, Dad." Merida says, rolling her eyes just like her daughter. "Mum's staying, then?"
"Aye, you know how she gets." He winks at her. Then he turns to Hades. "I heard yer daughter's here... which one's she?" He turns to our group and surveys us. I have to fight every instinct in me to not slouch down and hope he doesn't see me.
His gaze lands on me and he grins. "Aaaah, it'll be you, then?"
I nod. He yells out and runs over, hugging me so hard he lifts me off the ground.
"Uh...hi?" I squeak. He drops me, grinning. I notice Maira is fuming behind his back. My dad is smiling slightly too as I back up next to Carlos again. He puts his arm around me, but even he's laughing a bit.
"Waaaaaaaaaaaaait." Maira grins at Carlos and I. "You two are a thing?"
"Mai!"
But Hades is the next one to speak. "What?" His gaze zeroes in on Carlos' arm around me and his eyes spark blue.
This. Can. Not. Be. Happening.
I literally met him half an hour ago!
Hades glares at Carlos, who goes pale and drops his arm.
"You're... dating?" Hades asks. He plays with his fingertips.
Carlos takes a giant step away from me at the same time I step away from him. Andy and Krissy look equally as evil as Maira.
Sera battles a grin. "Yep! They've been dating since like a couple months ago, when he asked her while she was fighting the Hanses."
"Shut up, Sera!" I hiss. But Hades just keeps playing with his fingers.
"Sooooo..." He keeps playing. "So...."
"Er, Had, maybe this isn't a good time..." Merida says.
Maira nods. "Nope, this is a very good time!"
I hate that girl.
I risk a glance at Carlos and see his face is as red as the non-black/white parts of his clothes.
Merida's dad Fergus clears his throat. "Well... Had... Eh..."
"Aaaand..." Hades seems to get the situation and stuffs his hands in his pockets. "Hmp."
I glare at Maira. I suddenly find myself really hoping she gets captured by Uma's crew when we get back to Auradon.
