Chapter 27
Fawn could hardly get a full breath in as she ran a hand through Ezra's hair, tears barely kept at bay. She murmured soft words, praying Ezra could hear them and listen. He was slipping further and further away. She could feel how weak his aura was becoming as his very life force faded slowly.
The members of the Ghost Crew stood anxiously at the walls as Hera charged the defibrillators. "Fawn, get back."
The Gray Jedi wearily stepped back, biting her lip, eyes trained on her younger brother.
"Clear!" Hera pushed the equipment into Ezra's chest, taking them off after a few seconds.
Fawn held her arms as she watched Hera use defibrillators again, and again, and again-
A muffled argument outside the room startled the others to look at the door.
"You can't go in-"
"Watch us!"
"Hurricane, Hera has orders to-"
"I don't give a damn what Hera said!"
"Ezra needs me Rex!"
Whiplash.
Fawn felt her heart clench when she heard the dragon's desperate retort towards the clone. Just moments before, she was reassuring the dragon Ezra was fine. She hated irony with all her soul.
Kanan glanced to her. "Fawn...?"
"Don't let him in, seeing this could break him" Fawn answered but didn't watch for Kanan's response.
Her focus was the heart monitor. It was barely spiking at all to the defibrillators shock waves. The world drowned out, her own heartbeat the only thing she could hear.
Ezra couldn't die. He couldn't. He was still far too young, there was so much Fawn was yet to tell him, there were people that needed him. The people on Lothal, Whiplash, Kanan, Hera, Sabine, Zeb, and Chopper even if he denied it. The galaxy itself needed Ezra.
I need Ezra
A high pitched whine made Fawn freeze. The heart monitor's reading was a single, horizontal line.
Fawn's blood ran cold, her mind numbing. Ezra...
Sabine hit the floor, tears rolling down her cheeks, unable to repress her sobs. Zeb's large, furred paw gripped her shoulder, but his own face was twisted in pain. Kanan fell against the wall, hand covering his mouth as numb shock filled the room. Hera stared at the boy, hands shaking, the defibrillators falling from her grip.
"NO! EZRA!" The desperate scream in the hall made Fawn fully grasp the situation.
The doors slid open, Rex staring at the bed, Hurricane and Whiplash standing behind the clone. Fawn couldn't bring herself to look at Whiplash, one glance could drive her to do something inhumane.
"No...." the weak whine made Fawn's strength crumble to dust.
She slid to the floor, a hand over her mouth to stifle her cries, tears flowing for all the world to see.
Hurricane looked to his rider than his brother, feeling lost. They were too late...
Whiplash suddenly hissed in pain, looking at his mark, his breath catching in his throat. The spiral on his shoulder was fizzing with electricity, and it was fading.
"NO!" Whiplash screamed, his voice reaching breaking point. He was on the bed with a single flap of his wings, nudging Ezra's cheek desperately. "Ezra- c-come on! You're stronger than this!"
The boy remained still, body heat fading as Whiplash shook him. "Ezra!"
Lightning crackled over Whiplash's body, lighting up the room. The dragon reared up. "EZRA!"
His paws slammed down on Ezra's chest, the volts entering his body.
"Whiplash-!" Rex began in panic but Hurricane spread a wing across to stop him, despite only being as tall as Rex's knee.
"Don't, this might be our last chance of saving him" he growled, worry twisting in his gut.
Yellow energy, hot and crackling spat off from Whiplash's body, his eyes dripping with warm tears. He electrocuted his rider again, his power growing with every volt he used.
"Whiplash stop" Fawn stood from the wall.
The dragon ignored her, too panicked to consider a logical course of action.
"Whiplash, stop, it's over!" Fawn snapped. "He's gone!"
Whiplash roared angrily, the spikes on his back and tail brightening. His fading mark suddenly flashed purple. The lightning surrounding the dragon turned lilac in colour, spitting furiously. Whiplash's eyes flared purple, the pupils disappearing in tbe light. He slammed his paws down, directly over Ezra's heart. Blinding light broke out forcing the people in the med-bay to look away. Heat waves rolled through the room, each one stronger than the last.
The room then dimmed. Purple embers sparking with energy falling to the floor. Whiplash stood above Ezra, breathing heavily as his pupils returned to his eyes.
Yet, the line of the heart moniter remained flat, not a spike to be seen.
"Come on you idiot, I can't lose you" Whiplash growled voice cracking as his lightning diminished fully.
Whiplash searched Ezra's face for a response, anything.
"I can't, not again.....not again" Whiplash gritted his teeth as he tried to cling to shreds of hope, tears rolling down his muzzle, "you're my brother...I need you."
The heart moniter didn't make a sound, and neither did the youth connected to it.
Whiplash gave away a sob, a paw covering his mouth as reality slamming into him. He hunched in on himself, grief taking over. Strength sapped, his legs buckled, falling on to Ezra's still chest. He buried his face into his arms, strangled sobs wracking his frame.
I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry-
THUMP
Whiplash's eyes snapped open. He didn't imagine that-
THUMP
Whiplash shot up, staring at his rider. The boy's lips were parted, soft, spaced breaths slowly being taken.
The heart moniter was spiking.
"Whiplash..did you just-" Fawn gasped.
Hera was at Ezra's side in a split second, holding his wrist. "He's got a pulse" she murmured in disbelief. "Whiplash, you brought him back."
Whiplash drew in a breath, tears still dripping from his eyes. "I-I did?"
Ezra suddenly rasped loudly, eyebrows clenching. He was alive.
"Holy crud" Zeb whispered. "He really did."
Whiplash gave a choked laugh, pressing a fist to his mouth. His shoulders trembled as he stood back.
"Whip, Whiplash are you okay?" Hurricane asked worriedly.
Whiplash looked to his brother. "Okay? Hurricane I just brought someone back to life. I-I just-! Oh my god! I just- holy druk-"
Whiplash laughed again, tears falling. "Oh my god...I saved him-"
"Calm down buddy" Hurricane smiled, leaping up onto the bed, putting a reassuring wing around the younger dragon. "It's okay."
Whiplash buried his face into Hurricane's neck, laughing with tears streaming down his face. "I saved him Hurricane! I finally saved him!"
"I know, I know, I'm proud of you" Hurricane purred, brushing the top of Whiplash's hea
d with his nose.
Whiplash leaned heavily against his brother, sniffling with a grin on his face. "I did it..." he whispered, allowing himself to relax for the first time in days. "I actually did something right..."
The dragon's full weight pressed against Hurricane as he slipped into silence.
"Whiplash?" Hurricane gently shook the dragon after a moment, "you good?"
Whiplash's breathing had evened out, the constant worry in the edges of his eyes smoothing over.
"Let him rest, he's deserved it" Kanan said, running a hand through Ezra's hair gently as Hera worked to help the boy breathe easily.
Hurricane looked down at his baby brother who was sleeping peacefully at his side. He exhaled an exhausted chuckle.
"Good job, buddy" he murmured. "Take it easy for now okay?"
Whiplash crooned in his sleep, for once completly at ease.
