Chapter 13

Fawn approached the base with Whiplash who was asleep in her arms. After the dragon's break down which had left him exhausted, Fawn got him to shrink and took him back to the Ghost. The Gray Jedi was extremely thankful for a dragons ability to change its size. If they stayed large, she didn't know how she'd manage precarious situations.
Readjusting her grip, Fawn noticed how the rash on Whiplash's spiral mark had faded. That was a really good sign. Clearly the talk she'd had with him had helped and was already proving effective. However, she couldn't help but think about what the dragon had gone through. He tried to forget Ezra exisited, he let his emotional pain out when he trained, and he'd become especially sensitive about the topic of being in the rebellion.

'People really can change after experiences like this' she thought.

Entering the bases perimeter, Fawn made a beeline towards the Ghost, the powerful lights helping her see. To her surprise, Hera and Ezra were sitting on the ramp, the teen in his pyjamas and Hera had a hand on his shoulder. Upon hearing footsteps, both of them looked up.

"Am I interrupting something?" Fawn asked.

"No, it's okay, Ezra was just having trouble sleeping...what happened to him?" Hera cut off her explanation to indicate the passed out dragon in Fawn's arms.

Seeing his bonded companion, Ezra instantly became alert.

"Is he okay?" He asked.

"He's alright, just a little...confused, Ezra, can you take him to your cabin?"

"Oh, uh..."

Hera rested a hand on the teen's shoulder making him look at her. She gave him a nod and he returned the action.

"Okay" he said, standing.

Fawn stepped forward and carefully transferred the sleeping reptile into her brother's arms. Ezra tensed, holding the dragon unsurely before his expression relaxed.

"Huh, he's lighter than I remembered" he said, running his thumb over Whiplash's marked shoulder.

The dragon rumbled lightly in his sleep, curling closer to Ezra and pushing his nose into the crook of the boy's arm. A smile broke out on Ezra's face, his eyes shining in a way Hera hadn't seen in a long time. Fawn rested a hand on Ezra's shoulder.

"Go on" she said.

"You need your rest."

Ezra nodded and turned.

"Night you two" he said, moving towards the ladder.

With the Force aiding his jump, Ezra leapt up the hole in the roof of the Ghost to the cockpit. Hera turned to Fawn who'd shifted her gaze to the stars.

"Do you think they'll ever sort their bond out?" The Twe'lik asked.

"Oh I'm quite sure they will, eventually. It might take a while to be completely at ease with each other, but they'll get there in the end" Fawn replied.

Ezra opened his cabin door with the Force and entered. The rumbling snores of Zeb and Bludgeon breaking the stillness of the room. Whiplash didn't even rouse to the grumbling noises, he stayed relaxed and at peace in Ezra's embrace. Ezra went over to his bunk and carefully placed the dragon on the bunk. To his surprise, the reptile whimpered and squirmed, claws clenching as he tried to reach for something. Ezra stretched out a finger and the Shadow Wing hybrid instantly latched on with his talons, holding on like his life depended on it. Ezra had to hold back an awe of adoration, but was unable to stop the smile growing on his face.

"Guess you do still have your soft side" Ezra murmured.

Carefully, he slipped his finger out from Whiplash's claws and climbed onto the bed beside the small reptile. Hesitantly, he slowly put his arm over the dragon's body. Whiplash sighed audibly in contentment, his body relaxing further and a small smile on his scaled face. He nestled his back further into Ezra's chest, tail curled around his back legs neatly.

"Always knew you were a big softie" Ezra grinned and got comfortable, slipping into the most deepest, and peaceful sleep he'd ever had.
