1: Book Titles
🌸🌸🌸
🌸🌸🌸
I think it's safe to say that the first thing anyone looks at, aside from the cover, is the title of the book. The title needs to be something that makes the reader want to check your book out.
I believe that the title works best if it's short, not extremely long. Now, you might be thinking, why does the number of words in the title matter?
Let me tell you something about human beings. They like things which are easy to understand and to the point, and a whole sentence, complete with punctuation, as a title, just isn't that.
Allow me to demonstrate with an example.
a) Ugh! I hate you, [insert random name]!!!
Or
b) hate
This is just an example, but I've seen titles like the first one. Which do you think sounds better?
The truth about people is they judge you from the way you present your ideas. It's not ideal, but it's unfortunately very true. They want a certain amount of sophistication and maturity, which title a) loses.
The story might have been amazing, even more than that of book b), but a lot of people won't even give it a chance, just because of the title. The second title conveys the idea just as well, but with a little more maturity.
Another thing to keep in mind while thinking of a title to your story is to not make it too complicated. Don't choose words that 80% of the people won't even know the meaning of. It will make them feel like your book is something beyond their range of understanding, which we do not want. No reader wants to feel inferior just because they don't know the meaning of one word. If you are choosing an uncommon word, make sure to include it's meaning firsthand in the book before you begin the actual story!
While keeping this in mind, you also have to make sure the title isn't too generic, or in simple terms, overused. This especially applies for fanfiction.
For example, often in social media based stories, where the friendship / relationship / connection forms on the basis of social websites, the titles usually go something like this:
snapchat|[insert Idol's name]
instagram|[insert name]
texting [insert name]
twitter|[insert name]
KIK|[insert name]
and so on and blah blah blah. There's nothing wrong with these titles, except for the fact that they are heavily overused and as unoriginal as a title can be.
I don't mean to offend anyone, because social media based stories give me life, but it ticks me off when the titles are this uncreative.
So, one suggestion I'd like to give is this: if you're writing an app based story, please choose a name that is not the name of the website. There are a thousand books that exist by that name already. Thanks.
With everything said, if you have a title that doesn't match with what I explained but gives you satisfaction, then keep it. There's always exceptions and I'm sure that if your story is good, the title won't matter as much! :)
