Darkness can encompass a primitive chaos, and the powers of that chaos; it is not essentially evil, yet it is largely associated with death and destruction, captivity and spiritual darkness. It can also be linked to the time spent in the womb and seed germination, both of which take place in the dark.  

Darkness represents mystery, sadness, fear, evil, death, depression, the unknown, suspense, ignorance, taboo, protection, deceit, secrecy, shame, nothingness, the cosmos, the underworld, witchcraft, wizardry, magic, mysticism, stupidity, isolation, things that are forbidden, the nighttime, danger and the truth .   

In the Book of Revelation, darkness indicates that the end of the world is forthcoming. Can be an emblem of bad judgment, misfortune and ignorance. 

The Prince of Darkness is the devil.
