It was snowing when the car pulled up to pick me up. I was quiet during the drive, thinking about how Shoto and Katsuki would be taking their hero licensing exam. If they passed then everyone in the class would be licensed. I hadn't told Shoto yet that I was going to be training with his father. Things just got busy between us and the chance didn't come up.
When we finally reached the agency, Endeavor was waiting for me. I stepped out of the car and he approached me offering a smile.
"Miss Shichi, it's good to see you," he offered a hand.
"It's good to see you too," I accepted his hand. "Thank you for accepting my request."
"I feel like I owe you an apology," Endeavor said. "I was cruel to you in the past. I hope I can make it up to you."
"Ah...well...thank you," I stammered, unsure what to say exactly.
"Shall we then?" Endeavor began to lead the way to the training area.
"Yes," I nodded and followed him.
"So tell me, how have things been going with your quirk?" He asked.
"There have been new changes," I said. "My flames have turned blue and burn even hotter, and there was one instance where I made lightning from the sky."
Endeavor raised a curious brow, "your quirk has evolved twice already in a short time?"
I nodded slowly.
"What triggered it?"
I paused thinking back on both times. "The first time was when my fire changed. I was fighting Chisaki and Sir Nighteye got hurt because of me. The second time we were doing training with the other class and one of the other students said it was because of me and Katsuki that All Might lost his power. I just...snapped."
Endeavor rubbed his chin in thought, "both times your emotions became so overwhelming that your quirk changed in response."
"Yeah," I nodded in agreement. "My power has always been tied to my emotions, that's what can make them so scary."
"Well that can be the case for anyone," Endeavor said. "It's just about finding that control."
I sighed and hung my head, "yeah I know, that's what Shota tells me."
"Well don't worry, I'll help you get stronger," Endeavor said. "I'll help you find that control."
We began training and Endeavor made me work on all of my elements. We tried to create lightning again but in the end I couldn't produce it or make the clouds change. After a while of trying Endeavor decided to move on and that it would eventually come and to try remembering the feeling of when I made the weather shift.
At the end of the session I was left tired and drained but he said that I did well. We decided that I would come back regularly a few times a week after classes and weekends.
I ended up falling asleep in the car on the way home and the driver had to wake me when we arrived back at UA.
When I walked into the dorm there were reporters there doing an interview. Katsuki and Shoto were sitting on the couch in front of the reporters while the rest of my classmates watched from afar. I blinked in confusion as to what was going on when Midoriya waved at me, gesturing I stay by the door.
"Not thirty minutes after getting your provisional licenses, you went to work and displayed some heroics that would put our pros to shame!" The reporter said. "You two must be good friends right? Spending so much time together in training?"
"Is that how it looked to you?!" Katsuki snapped. "You better head to an optometrist or a neurologist!"
"Yes, we are friends," Shoto nodded.
"What?! You're making crap up! When did we become friends?!" Katsuki yelled at Shoto.
"We spent a lot of time together during the license course," Shoto continued.
"That's not how it works! There's no correlation between time spent together and friendship!" Katsuki yelled.
"Correlation?" Shoto repeated.
"You need a brain doctor too!" Katsuki snapped.
I covered my mouth to hide my laughter as the interview came to an end. It was nice to see them becoming friends, despite what Katsuki said.
When it was finally done I went to my room and collapsed on the bed. I pulled out my phone and texted Shoto telling him congratulations on passing his test. I also decided to tell him that I was training with his father. I ended up falling asleep before I could read his response.
We got into the final weeks of December, just a few days before the end of term. I was talking with Midoriya when suddenly Kaminari and Sero started laughing. They were watching the interview from before with Shoto and Katsuki.
"A whole hour long interview!" Kaminari laughed. "And Bakugo's part was cut!"
"In a way it's for his own good," Uraraka said.
"How dare they cut me," Katsuki growled.
"Not very 'All Might-ish' of him," Midoriya said.
"Yeah," I nodded in agreement.
"I heard that Deku you dweeb! You too Snowflake!" Katsuki yelled at us.
"To think that was his third interview," Momo sighed.
"What a waste," Jiro said. "Think of all that good press he could've gotten after they got their licenses.
Midoriya pulled up the video on his phone and I leaned over to continue watching.
"These newly licensed heroes in training are just the sort of fresh faces we can rely on," the reporter said. "We eagerly await the day they can become full-fledged heroes so that we hopefully won't see a repeat of the Deika city tragedy."
I remembered hearing about that on the news. How a massive fight broke out between villains and caused massive damage.
"It's been nine days since that disaster," the reporter continued. "Twenty individuals pushed Deika to the brink of destruction in less than an hour."
"They said that the scope of the destruction was even greater than the Kamino incident," I said solemnly. "The casualties were lower, however, thanks to Deika's remote location."
"Some see this planned attack as a deliberate attempt to shake society's faith in pro heroes, but what are people on the streets saying?" The reporter said.
"It's dumb to criticize the heroes of Deika. What they should be talking about is relaxing this whole rigid system," one person said.
"Let's not go after the heroes who stepped up in Deika. What, were they supposed to file the proper paperwork first or something?" Another person said.
"Keep trying even harder heroes! Cause like we'll do our best too!" Two people cheered.
They changed the screen and brought up Aorio Kuraishihu, a hero expert. "In the past, a situation like this, where heroes were forced to make a difficult call would've earned those same heroes criticism. But I suspect we may be witnessing a critical turning point in this era. A large scale shift in opinion from criticism to support."
"Feels like everything's different since the 'can't-cha see' kid did his thing," Uraraka said.
"It's all cause Endeavor kicked butt," Ashido said.
Suddenly the door to the class opened. "You think the future's bright? Not so fast! It might seem like the winds of good fortune are blowing our way, but if you stop and think about the flip side of all this, it's actually coming from a sense of urgency. It's a response to danger! These cheers for the conquering heroes are really prayers, a plea that we emerge victorious! They've had enough of the showbiz side of heroism and want us to prove our worth for real now!" Mount Lady announced as she and Midnight entered the room.
"Mount lady?!" Midoriya exclaimed.
"She's your guest lecturer, since you'll have more media exposure going forward," Shota explained as he walked in wearing a sleeping bag that had arms and legs.
"Today we're talking about the media," Mount Lady said. "And as a rising star myself I'm the perfect hero to teach you how to work it! Come on kids!"
We got changed and went to one of the training sites. The thought of the media made me nervous considering the last time my name got brought up by the media. It wasn't in a good light.
"Come on kids! Let's do this with a plus ultra attitude!" Mount lady exclaimed. "It's hero interview training!"
Shoto was up first. Mount Lady held the mic out to him. "Amazing work out there Shoto!"
"Sorry what are we talking about?" He asked confused.
"Pretend you just finished a mission and say thanks," Mount Lady instructed.
"Thanks," Shoto said.
"Now tell us, Shoto, what sort of hero do you want to be?"
"The type who can make everyone feel at ease when I show up," he answered.
"Fantastic! If a looker like you suddenly showed up I think my heart would burst from my chest!" Mount Lady said dramatically.
"Do you have a heart condition?" Shoto asked, concerned.
"What's with this kid?!" Mount Lady asked. "What are your ultimate moves?"
Shoto turned and made a huge ice wall, "heaven piercing ice wall! It's good for crowd control, stopping villains and creating platforms. It has many uses," he explained. "I have another move called flash freeze heatwave which is a little more rough."
"What about the one he used against class b?" Jiro asked.
"Flash fire fist!" Hagakure remembered.
"That's my dad's move," Shoto said. "I'm not at his level yet."
"It's okay to have personal touchy topics," Mount Lady said. "But if you're trying to put people at ease, smiling would be a good start. Flash some smiles and you'll be a genuine lady killer."
"My smile will kill women?!" Shoto looked at me in horror.
"Okay that's enough," Mount Lady said.
"Are we supposed to show off our ultimate moves during interviews?" Tokoyami asked.
"You sweet naive UA kids, it's not like everyone in the world already knows who you are already," Mount Lady said. "You're ultimate moves symbolize you. It's through those moves people learn what you're capable of. Then you can prepare for impromptu team ups and combos, and warn people of villains and crimes. This way everyone trusts you enough to put their lives in your hands. Shouting out the names isn't just for show. There's plenty of meaning behind it."
I messed with the edge of my skirt, "not long ago all she cared about was being on camera."
"Mount Lady isn't the only one who has changed," Shota said. "Every hero out there is being pulled up by the number one hero's rising tide."
I looked at Shota and wondered if I would rather be like him and avoid the media all together. As if he seemed to be reading my thoughts he patted my head.
"You'll be fine, just be yourself."
The others in class went, each taking their turns. They all looked so cool and Mount Lady didn't have many notes for them. There were only three of us left. Katsuki, Midoriya and I. Somehow watching my classmates only made me more nervous.
"I ain't gonna waste my time on sound bites!" Katsuki snapped. "Just shut up and follow me!"
"You're a better interview on your own," Mount Lady said. "You just don't mesh well with...humans..."
"I guess they cut you from the interview cause I was there," Shoto said.
"You think your hot stuff?! As if I care what you say about me!" Katsuki yelled at him.
Up next was Midoriya who looked as nervous as me.
"You go by Deku right? I saw you in action!" Mount Lady said.
"T-That's g-great...r-really great," Midoriya said nervously.
"Any thoughts on your performance out there?"
"Hey tha-that's great..." Midoriya repeated.
"He's so nervous," Tsuyu said.
"Many of your moves seem to be homages to All Might, is he a hero you admire?" Mount Lady asked.
"Yeah!" Midoriya yelled.
"So that's what gets you going," she said.
"But I'm not just copying him. I'm actually customizing All Might's moves in ways that suit me best. Like my Delaware Smash..." Midoriya began to mutter.
"What about that move that burst out of you?" Midnight asked. "I heard you made some progress. How's that going?"
Midoriya paused in his tracks and took a breath before holding his hand out. He focused for a moment before activating his quirk. Light night whipped around him and a small black streak came from his hand.
"There!" Midoriya exclaimed. "Admittedly that was a tiny one but I'm on my way to controlling it."
After him it was my turn. I held my breath as I walked up the stairs, my fingers intertwining around each other before I stopped in front of Mount Lady.
"So Elemental, your quirk can pack quite the wallop can't it!" Mount Lady asked me, catching me off guard.
"Well...well... I suppose so..." I nervously began to run my hands over my braid.
"Which element do you think you use the most?" Mount Lady asked next.
I wanted to shrink into nothingness. I could feel everyone looking at me. I looked out and saw Shota looking at me. He gave me an encouraging nod and I took a deep breath.
"I-I guess the one I use most is fire, or air, it's hard to tell," I said. "I don't need anything to make those so it's easier."
"Tell us a little bit about your costume, you seem to have a lot of bags and tools on you," Mount lady said.
"Yeah I do," I nodded. "On my hip here I keep sand. I can control it with my earth quirk and I try to use it to blind people. Then I have my water bottles here on my chest so I always have access to water. This here is my glider which can also be used as a weapon if I need it. And then I have my goggles here which can prevent people from seeing my eye color, not allowing them to see what element I'm using."
"Is that an homage to your adopted father Eraserhead?" Mount lady asked.
I felt my face flush, "a little."
"Why don't you show us an ultimate move of yours," she suggested.
"Okay, this one I'm still working on," I said as I took several steps back.
I took a deep breath, finally my training with Endeavor would come through. I closed my eyes activated my fire quirk and could feel the heat coming from my back and shoulders. Now I just needed to make it take shape. I opened them and expanded the blue flames, stretching them across my back and outward, forcing them into the shape of wings.
"Fire Angel Wings!" I exclaimed as I activated my air quirk boosting me into the air a little way away. The heat from my wings while controlling the air flow kept me aloft. I felt giddy in my chest as I actually lifted higher than I had before. I wanted to show off even more.
I pushed my air quirk more and the sky began to darken as the clouds began to rumble. I told myself to focus on the air to make the electricity spark where I wanted it. I felt it pop and five lightning bolts went off behind me.
"Heavens smite!" I exclaimed before floating back to the ground. I was out of breath when I let go of my quirk. It wasn't perfect yet and it still took a lot out of me.
"Wow! That was something else!" Mount Lady exclaimed.
"I'm still working on it," I said as I scratched my cheek.
With that the class was over and we were sent back to our dorms. I was exhausted. I pushed myself showing off, but it felt worth it.
"Hey! Snowflake!" Katsuki walked up to me while I was making tea.
"Oh, hey Katsuki," I waved to him.
"You've gotten stronger," he said.
"Y-yeah," I nodded.
"But I have too," Katsuki said.
"Okay?" I tilted my head at him.
"I just wanted you to know," Katsuki said, tucking his hands behind his head with a grumpy look on his face.
I giggled in response, "alright then."
Shoto came up to us, "I liked your flames."
"Thanks, you were cool today too," I smiled at him.
"Thanks," Shoto smiled back. As soon as he realized he was smiling his eyes went wide and grabbed my shoulders. "Oh no! Kanna! Please don't die!"
"What are you talking about?" I asked as he shook me.
"Earlier she said my smile would kill women!" Shoto exclaimed.
"You're an idiot," Katsuki scoffed before walking away.
I started laughing before hugging him, "you're so silly. It's a figure if speech. I love your smile."
"Oh...okay," Shoto calmed down. "That's good." He hugged be back.
I pulled away and continued making tea for the both of us. We went and sat at a table together.
"Training with my dad seems to be going well for you," Shoto said.
"Yeah, it's hard though," I sighed. "I wish you were there."
"I wouldn't want to distract you," Shoto sipped his tea.
I thought for a moment about Shoto training with me, the thought of his shirt burned off with sweat dripping from his brow. I daydreamed for a minute before he brought me back.
"What are you thinking about?" He asked.
My face turned red and I waved my hands, "nothing!"
"Sure," Shoto said not believing me.
"Don't worry about it!" I insisted.
"I'm not," Shoto replied.
I huffed and drank my tea silently looking at him. He looked back at me and raised a brow.
"You're gonna be a really good hero," I said.
"So will you," Shoto smiled.
"I hope so," I said, still feeling nervous about the future.
We spent the rest of the evening together chatting and enjoying each other's company.
We found out later that we would be doing work studies again. On Christmas eve everyone seemed to be talking about it. Everyone was dressed up for the Christmas festivities as well.
"You going to Ryukyu's place again?" Jiro asked Uraraka.
"Yep," she nodded. "What about you Jiro?"
"What are your plans Midoriya?" Iida asked. "Going back to the Nighteye agency?"
"Didn't Centipeder take over the operation?" Kirishima asked me. "You and Midoriya haven't seen him in a while have you."
I shook my head.
"I was thinking the same thing, but they have their hands full," Midoriya said. "Shichi and I have to find somewhere else to do our studies. Gran Torino can't take me either so I'm in limbo."
"What are you gonna do Shichi?" Kirishima asked me. "Didn't you have a lot of options last time?"
"Yeah I did," I nodded. "But I think I already know where I'm going."
"Last time was voluntary but since this time it's mandatory I'm sure the school will find something for me," Midoriya said.
Kaminari and Ashido were trying to get Katsuki to wear a Santa hat when Kirishima asked him, "are you going back to Jeanist, Bakugo?"
Katsuki stopped before yelling, "I dunno yet." He pulled the hat off and tossed it behind him.
"But hey you got scouted by a whole bunch of people too," Kirishima said.
"All those losers?" Katsuki scoffed. "They can't teach me anything.
Sato brought out food and it was almost time for the feast. The door opened getting our attention.
"We're a little late, I hope it didn't start already," Shota said as he walked in with Eri dressed in a Santa outfit.
"Tricky treat?" Eri asked. Her cuteness made my heart melt.
"Not quite," Shota said. "Wrong holiday."
Everyone began to gush about how cute she was.
"Where is Togata?" Midoriya asked.
"I told him we'd be here tonight, right now he's with his class," Shota said.
"Her horn is getting bigger," I noticed.
"Yeah," Shota said. "She seems more positive these days." He looked at Midoriya, "what you said to her really hit home."
We spent the rest of the evening enjoying the food, music and presents. Everyone exchanged gifts and had fun. I gave presents to my friends and to Shota. Shota gave me a new set of colored pencils and a new sketch pad. Overall, a fun time where everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
Afterwards when we were cleaning up, Shoto got my attention. "You're going to my dad's agency right?"
"Oh, yeah, I think so," I nodded. "I'm already training with him so it just makes sense."
"I'm...I'm going too," Shoto said.
"Oh," I said with a smile.
"And I was thinking..." Shoto began.
I held up a hand, "whatever you want to do I'm on board."
"Okay," Shoto smiled. "Come on then." He led me over to where Katsuki and Midoriya were. "Hey you two, if neither of you have a work study yet, why don't you come with me and Kanna to the current number one."
