Intruder
That night Midoriya walked me home and I told him about how All Might saved me. I left out most of the details about how harsh the beatings were and how everyone died in the building collapse. I felt like if he knew I was responsible for all those deaths he might see me in a different light. I did, however, tell him how I spent the first eight years of my life in a lab and that All Might was the first person to show me kindness. He quietly listened to everything I had to say and in the end he said he was sorry I had to go through that. When we got to my home I gave him a hug and thanked him for being my friend. He stammered something similar and that made me laugh.
When Shota came home he sensed something was wrong so I told him everything. I asked if he was upset that I told Midoriya, he shrugged and said something about it being my story. Shota didn't usually get upset about things like this. He did tell me that he reviewed my battle training. He told me things I needed to work on, similar to what All Might had said. I told him about the class knowing about our relationship but he didn't seem to care.
The next morning Shota woke me up before he left, "Kanna I have a meeting this morning. Will you be okay getting to school?"
"Yea, I'll be fine. Did you eat?" I asked, sometimes when he was rushing he wouldn't actually make anything.
"Don't worry about me I have something," Shota said. "Don't stay in bed too long, and don't be late."
"I'm getting up now," I sighed climbing out of bed. I gave him a quick hug goodbye and I went to make something to eat.
Since it was just myself I made a quick bowl of soup with some dumplings on the side. I kept thinking about my conversation with Midoriya. I didn't know why I was stressing so much about it, it's not like he was going to tell anyone. He wouldn't do something like that. At least I didn't think he would. I shook my head, telling myself to stop stressing. If I kept this up I would be late for class. Shota would probably single me out in front of everyone. While that would be embarrassing at least it would convince people that I wasn't receiving special treatment, if that's what they were thinking.
I quickly showered, dressed and headed out towards UA. My commute wasn't a long one, about a ten minute walk to the station, two stops and a brief walk to school. Overall about thirty minutes or so. While I was walking up to the entrance I saw a group of people gathering in front. Full of cameras and microphones, they were from the media. Since the announcement that All Might was a teacher here, news outlets had been going crazy. I kept my head down and tried to push passed them.
"Miss can you tell us about All Might?" "What's it like having All Might as a teacher?" "What can you tell us?" I was surrounded by them, all asking me questions about All Might.
"Uhm, I don't know, I need to get to class," I stammered trying to get through.
"You all need to leave the students alone. You are in the way," Shota said coming to mine and the other students rescue.
"Who are you?" A reporter woman asked. "Are you a teacher here?"
"Yes now stop harassing the students. All Might isn't here today," Shota said waving his hand. He gave me a look that told me to get to class and I nodded and hurried along.
As I walked to me desk I passed Bakugo who glared at me, clearly still annoyed I used his move. "Good morning Bakugo," I said cheerfully.
"Hmph," Bakugo turned his head away from me and I continued on.
I gave a quick wave to Midoriya and Momo before sitting down. I let out a sigh and turned to say good morning to Todoroki. "Did those reporters harass you too?" He asked me.
"Yea, they asked me a bunch of questions about All Might. Luckily Mr. Aizawa told them to back off," I explained. It still felt weird calling Shota Mr. Aizawa.
"Yea me too," Todoroki nodded just before Shota came into the room.
"Alright everyone, I looked over your grades and results from yesterday's battle training," Shota began. "Bakugo, you need to grow up, stop wasting your talent."
"Right," Bakugo gave a short nod.
"Seems Midoriya ended the day with another broken arm. Learn to control your quirk, that excuse is getting old and I hate repeating myself." Shota said giving Midoriya a hard look. "You have potential, so long as you can get over your issue."
"I'll work harder!" Midoriya assured him.
"One more thing, it's been brought to my attention that you all know that Shichi is my daughter. If you are all thinking I'm going to give her special treatment you are wrong. She's a regular student just like you all," Shota said scanning his eyes through the room. Of course he would make it clear to the rest of the class, but at least coming from him they should believe it. "Now moving on to homeroom business. Today you will be choosing a class president."
The class erupted, it seemed almost everyone wanted to be class president. In a hero school like this, it was a good opportunity to show off leadership skills. Iida stood up and called for everyone's attention, "why don't we put it to a vote? We still don't know each other very well so this seems like the most logical approach."
"Since we don't know each other, doesn't that mean everyone will end up just voting for themselves?" Asui asked. She had a pretty good point.
"Yes you are correct but I'm sure that some people will vote for other people and those with more than one vote are the clear choice," Iida explained.
"I don't care how you do it, just hurry up." Shota said climbing into his sleeping bag.
So we all placed our votes. I didn't really want to be class president so I voted for Iida instead. He seemed like he would be a good leader to me. Besides, this whole vote thing was his idea. We passed all the votes up and someone had tallied the totals on the board. Seemed most people voted for themselves except Midoriya and Momo. He had three votes and she had two. People began teasing Iida for only having one vote, thinking that he voted for himself.
"Who the hell voted for Deku?!" Bakugo yelled looking around at the others. No one came forward, probably out of fear.
"Alright so your president is Midoriya and vice president is Yaoyorozu," Shota said standing back up.
The rest of the morning classes went by really fast and before I knew it, it was lunch time. I grabbed a bowl of curry rice and sat next to Midoriya. I took a bite and it was sweeter than I anticipated, but it was still really good.
"I'm kinda worried about being president," Midoriya said nervously. "What if I don't have what it takes?"
"You will be fine," Iida said trying to reassure him.
"I agree!" Uraraka said giving him an encouraging smile.
"I think you will make a fine president, you are good at handling situations." I said agreeing with the others.
"Shichi is right, your grit and decisiveness makes you the perfect candidate. That's why I voted for you," Iida said.
"But you wanted to be president too right?" Uraraka clicked her tongue. "I thought you voted for yourself. I wonder who voted for you then."
"I did," I spoke up. "I figured Iida would make a good president."
"While I humbly appreciate that, I feel Midoriya was the better choice," Iida said all too seriously.
"Hey Iida are you a rich kid?" Uraraka asked what we were thinking just from the way he used humbly. Midoriya and I had to contain our laughter from how forward she was.
"Well I didn't want everyone to find out but do you know the turbo hero Ingenium?" Iida asked us.
Before Uraraka and I could speak up Midoriya got all star-eyed, "he employs 65 sidekicks at his office in Tokyo! Of course I know him!"
"He's a pretty popular hero from what I hear," I said scraping the last of my curry into my mouth.
"Well he's my brother!" Iida said with a grin of admiration. "He's a true hero who upholds the hero code. He's the reason I want to become a hero."
"That's amazing Iida!" I said. That was the first time I had really seen him smile. Suddenly I remembered I forgot my medicine this morning. "Hey guys I'll be back I have to run to the classroom for something."
"Is everything okay?" Uraraka asked me.
"Yea I just need to grab something. When I get back I wanna hear more about your brother, Iida." I said picking up my tray and hurried out of the lunchroom.
When I got to the classroom I opened my bag to check for my emergency supply. It wasn't there, crap, I must have taken it out of my bag at some point. Maybe Shota had some on him. I was walking across the front of the classroom to find him when alarms started going off. Something about a level three security breach.
Suddenly something snapped inside me and I began remembering. My head started pounding and I dropped to my knees. Flashbacks from that day played in my mind. The alarms and the building shaking. Part of me knew I was activating my quirk but the other part of me was too scared to move. I didn't know what to do. My breathing picked up and tears were flowing from my eyes. I had to get control but I couldn't.
"Shichi? Are you okay? What's going on?" I heard Todoroki trying to talk to me. I must have said something about getting help because he ran off somewhere.
Moments later he came back with a teacher, "Kanna, breath you are safe." She said trying to sooth me. All the teachers knew about my issues.
"Her eyes keep going from grey to green," Todoroki pointed out. "What should we do Ms. Midnight?"
"She's trying to keep her earth quirk under control while shes panicking. I want you to get back and hold your breath," Midnight instructed him. She activated her quirk and a sleeping powder came off her skin. I didn't try and fight it as sleep overtook me. Last thing I saw was Todoroki catching me as my eyes fluttered closed.
When I woke up I was in the nurse office. Sitting up I rubbed my temples and looked around. Present Mic was sitting in a chair waiting for me to wake, "want to explain what happened earlier?" His voice seemed more concerned than angry.
"I had an episode," I bit my lip and told him what happened. "I think the alarms triggered it. What was that about?"
"The media managed to break in," Mic stood up and walked over. "Aizawa is finishing up with class. You slept through the whole afternoon."
"Is he mad?" I asked hesitantly.
"I don't know if he's mad per se. He did ask me to take you home though," Mic explained. He handed me my bag as I stood up.
"Thanks Mic, did I?" I couldn't finish the sentence.
"No, there wasn't any damage. You managed to hold enough control. I doubt anyone really felt the tremors you made. Midnight put you to sleep before it got any worse." Mic said as we walked to his car.
The car ride was quiet and I thanked him when he dropped me off. I went inside and laid on my bed, checking my phone for messages. I had three, one from Midoriya, one from Shota, and one from a number I didn't recognize. I looked at the one from Shota first.
Shota Aizawa: We need to talk about what happened today when I get home.
I groaned, that was going to be unpleasant. I didn't reply, it didn't matter what I said right now so I moved on to the message from Midoriya.
Izuku Midoriya: Hey Shichi, you never came back after lunch. Is everything okay?
I sighed deciding to reply to him.
Me: Hey Midoriya. Yea I'm fine. I just had some emotional troubles. I'm fine now though. What did I miss in class today?
He replied almost instantly.
Izuku Midoriya: Not much. I gave the class president position to Iida. He led everyone during the crisis earlier so we all agreed he would be a better fit. I'm glad you are okay.
Me: Same. I'm sure Iida will do a good job. I'll talk to you tomorrow in class.
I looked at the next message.
Unknown: This is Todoroki. I got your number from Midoriya. Can we talk about what happened earlier?
Me: Hi Todoroki. Yes we can. So I had flashbacks to a traumatic point in my life. That's all I'm fine now so if you are worried don't be.
I saved his number in my phone after I sent the text. It seemed like forever before he finally replied.
Shoto Todoroki: I see. At least you are better now. Aizawa seemed annoyed this afternoon. Not sure if it's from that or if he's just generally annoyed.
Me: Probably both.
Shoto Todoroki: Well good luck.
Me: Thanks.
I heard the front door open and Shota came in. He didn't wait to call out for me, "Kanna get out here."
I rolled off the bed and went out to meet him. He was taking his scarf off and tied his hair back. He looked at me with disappointment. "I'm guessing you didn't take your medicine today."
"No I forgot," I looked down and began picking at my fingernails.
"How could you have forgotten?" Shota crossed his arms. "You should know better."
"It was just one day," I said. I narrowed my eyes at him defensively.
"Well one day can lead to another. You are lucky that you maintained some sort of control and that Todoroki went and got help." Shota said I could feel his frustration rising.
"Even without him, I could have handled it fine!" I snapped at him. "Why are you being so dramatic about this? Mic said that I barely made any tremors!"
"It's the fact that it happened, Kanna!" Shota snapped back at me. "You know how your quirk can be when your emotions are out of control."
"You are treating me like a child!" I was on the verge of yelling now. My eyes flashed red and I could feel the heat coming off my hands.
Shota activated his quirk, erasing mine. "Go to your room until you lose that attitude. When you want to talk like a mature person then I'll be here. Until then get out of my sight."
"Whatever!" I yelled storming off to my room. He was being so unfair! I paced around my room still angry at Shota. Why didn't he understand that it was an accident? It's not like I was going to let this happen again.
Suddenly my phone started ringing and I lost my train of thought. I grabbed my phone and looked at the caller ID, Ochaco Uraraka. I answered the phone and tried to cover up my shaky voice.
"Hey, Shichi!" Uraraka said cheerfully. "What's wrong? You sound upset."
"Shota and I got into an argument." I said honestly. Maybe she would see my side and agree with me.
"Is it about how you collapsed today?" Uraraka asked. "When we came back to class we saw you in Todoroki's arms talking to Mr. Aizawa. They said you collapsed and Todoroki took you to the nurse's office."
"Yea something like that," I huffed. "He's being really unfair right now. He's treating me like a child just because I made one mistake."
"I think Mr. Aizawa is just worried about you," Uraraka said after a moment. "He's probably more concerned than mad. He seems like a rational person to me. I mean I would be worried if my kid suddenly collapsed." I opened my mouth and then closed it. She had a good point, maybe I was the one in the wrong. "Shichi?" She asked bringing me back.
"Yea I'm still here. I was just thinking about what you said. I think you are right and I owe Shota an apology." I said as the guilt started to come over me. I shook my head and said, "wait, Todoroki carried me?"
"Yea he was with you when you collapsed so he carried you." Uraraka said bluntly. Even though I couldn't see her face I knew she had a teasing grin across it.
"Well that's embarrassing," I said. My face was starting to flush.
"He's like your knight in shining armor!" Uraraka teased.
"Oh my god no! That's not even funny Uraraka!" I snapped at her completely flushed now. "Anyway I better go and talk to Shota."
"Alright I'll talk to you tomorrow!" Uraraka said as she hung up the phone.
I shot Todoroki a quick text while I let my face return to normal color.
Me: you told everyone I collapsed?
He replied faster than before.
Shoto Todoroki: Seemed like a better idea than trying to explain everything that happened.
Me: okay fair enough. Did you really carry me?
Shoto Todoroki: Yes I did.
Great, now I had that to live with. I shook my head and tossed my phone on my bed. I took a deep breath before leaving my bedroom. I walked out to the living room and saw Shota preparing dinner. I bit my lip and stood awkwardly waiting for him to speak.
"Are you ready to talk?" Shota asked not looking up from what he was doing.
"Yea, I'm sorry I yelled at you," I said beginning to fidget again.
"It's okay," Shota said meeting my gaze. "You just really worried me today."
"I know. I'm really sorry and it won't happen again." I said, my lips trembling.
"You're right because I'm changing your medicine schedule. I want you to start taking them at night before bed. Then you don't have to worry about forgetting in the morning." Shota explained as he walked over to me. He gave me a hug and patted my head. "I'm not mad at you."
I felt like a little kid again as I buried my face in his chest. "I'm really sorry Shota."
"Come on dinner is ready," Shota smiled at me and gave me another pat.
Over the next couple days I got used to the new medicine schedule. It wasn't much of a change and my emotions went back to normal. I didn't feel guilt like I normally would have, Shota seemed okay and I knew that he wasn't one to say one thing but mean another. He was very straightforward which was always something I appreciated about him. He did recommended that I use my earth quirk whenever I could. He said that I had more control over it than I believed. I was still unsure, using it for small things like with sand and dirt was fine but the bigger stuff still scared me.
In class everything was back to normal as well. No one really talked about the break in or my incident. Todoroki didn't ask any questions regarding my past which was nice. After lunch Shota walked in for hero basic training.
"Today we are doing rescue training," Shota said pressing a button that made our costume cases come out of the wall. "You can wear your costumes if you want but some of you have costumes that will be ill-suited for this. Either way hurry up, we are going to a different location so we will be traveling by bus."
I quickly changed into my costume slightly nervous for rescue training. Shota always said I would shine in rescue missions, if I let go of my fear and used my earth quirk. I could rely on my water and air quirks for this but I had a feeling that there were going to be moments where I would have to move rocks and even parts of buildings, depending on what they were made of. I shook my head swallowing my nerves and headed outside to join the others.
