catch a cute guy by the toe | au

So, there was a screenshot of a prompt in the Jaya discord chat and the whole conversation it held was kind of super cute and we thought, "Let's Jaya-fy this!"

I took on the arduous task of turning it into fanfiction and so here we are. Thank you to Dissmisery for sharing that prompt with me and for helping a little bit with the backstory.

This is an AU so the Ninja are not actually. . . um, ninjas.

Jay had never been in a worse situation. He should've known that anything involving a dare from Cole and Zane would end up in a disaster and 'end up in a disaster' it did.

Not only had he almost got caught toilet-papering a classmate's house but his foot had also failed at working as a foot which caused him to sprain his ankle while hightailing it out of there.

The dare was simple: "I dare you to toilet paper Morro's house."

"What? I'm not doing that! He'll kill me if he finds out!"

"Come on! It's perfect for revenge. The guy has been nothing but a jerk to us all year. This is our chance to get back at him."

Jay had reluctantly agreed, partly because of all the rotten things Morro had done to him and his friends and partly because it sounded kind of cool to be roaming around at night and chucking TP rolls at a bully's wreck of a house.

But what wasn't cool was limping in the dark in a sketchy neighborhood and cursing his lazy self for not charging his phone so that he could at least contact Cole to come get him.

"This sucks," he hissed, glowering at his reflection on the black screen of his cell phone. He put his injured foot down to rest his stiff leg but it only ached worse than before and so tears sprang up in his eyes.

Jay had no option but to lean heavily against a telephone pole and wait for someone to pass by. Which didn't seem like a possibility because it was pretty late for anyone to be out in this rough locality anyway.

"Bad luck, Jay. Bad luck," he whispered sourly at himself.

"Dad, do I really have to go with you on this patrol?" Kai Smith grumbled as he yanked open the door to the passenger seat of his father's cop car.

Ray directed a warm smile at another officer at the door of the station before climbing inside the vehicle. He started up the car and gestured for his son to get in. Kai scoffed and seated himself next to his father. He gave him a side-glance.

"You didn't answer my question, Dad?" he tried again. "I could actually be doing something more fun like watching Ready Player One with Lloyd and Nya."

Ray shook his head, crossing the gates of the station and pulling onto the main street. "I brought you here to let you have a first-hand experience of police work. Isn't that what we decided to do during your summer break from school?"

"It's what you decided, Dad," Kai rolled his eyes. "From my vantage, police work is an extremely boring thing to have a 'first-hand experience' of. Now, if you're talking about racing-"

Ray frowned, adopting the countenance of a tired soldier who had fought many crusades in his lifetime. "Being an officer is a very noble profession. You're risking your life to keep the world safe, kiddo. It's always an honor to die a hero's death."

"Here we go again," Kai muttered under his breath.

The next hour and a half were spent by Ray telling stories of the many criminal masterminds he and his partners had foiled and Kai glancing at the speedometer to check if it was safe for him to jump out of a moving car and not break any bones. His father's police anecdotes were bad enough but the continuously wailing siren on top of his car was drilling holes into his brain.

It was on the night's twenty-seventh story did Ray discover that he had left his gun back home. And any police in their right mind would know to keep a gun at hand when roaming around crime-ridden streets at night.

So he had to call his daughter, Nya.

There was a little contention in which Nya convinced her father to let her ride her bike instead of taking the bus but it all got sorted out in the end. The call dropped and Ray took a U-turn at the next signal and made his way back to the police station. That's when he noticed Kai regarding him with yet another unimpressed look.

He sighed. "What now?"

"You're trusting your sixteen-year-old daughter -only daughter, mind you- with a gun. And a bike. At nine-thirty at night. May I ask how you're okay with that?"

Ray snorted. "She's not a whiny baby like you, Kai. My girl's a tough one. Even tougher than me, I must admit. I believe in her."

Kai arched an eyebrow. "Remind me to pick up 'Parenting 101' for you when I make a stop at the library."

"You never make a stop at the library."

"Of course I do! How do you think I get straight A's on my assignments?"

"Nya."

Kai opened his mouth to object to that but realized he couldn't deny something that was true. So he proceeded to keep his lips zipped at that, sulkily turning to face the window.

They were now driving through a not-so-nice-looking territory. Most of the apartment buildings appeared rundown and the walls were covered in rude graffiti. Separatory fences were nothing more than twisted and broken wire-mesh and every plant and tree seemed overgrown. Trash coated the sidewalks and mangy cats and dogs stared at the car from around every corner.

Kai shuddered at the sight. "Ugh, I hate places like these."

Ray didn't reply, however. Kai felt the car stop and he glanced questioningly at his father. "Dad, what's wrong? Why are we stopping here?"

Ray simply rolled down his window and leaned out. "Hey, you!" he yelled at someone in the dark street. "What are you up to, huh?"

Confused, Kai peered through the windshield. Barely out of the line of the headlights, he could see someone wearing blue and hiding in the shadows. If he wasn't mistaken, he seemed like a guy his age.

After a few stern calls from Ray, the person hesitantly stepped into the light. He had a limp and he appeared scared and nervous.

"It's Jay," Kai whispered.

His father turned to him. "Who?"

"Jay Walker," Kai muttered, taking in the boy's ginger hair and abundant freckles. "The guy from my Math class."

Ray's eyes widened. A student at his son's school? Lurking in a dark neighborhood acting suspicious? "His story better be good," Ray mumbled, getting out of the car.

. . .

"Community service!" Ray declared, making both the boys jump.

"What?" Jay squeaked from the backseat, face pale and sweaty.

"If you're not paying the fine for the vandalism of private property then you must volunteer for community service," Ray explained, his eyes meeting Jay's in the rearview mirror.

"Why? Is TP-ing someone's house illegal?" Kai wondered, leaning back and resting his feet on the dashboard.

"Sir, I barely toilet-papered one tree in that jungle of a yard," Jay informed, leaning back on the leather seat. "And to be honest, it looked prettier that way."

"Wow, dude. You roasted a tree," Kai snickered. He turned around and extended a fist towards Jay. "Respect."

The ginger grinned, bumping his fist with Kai's. Jay would be lying if he said the whole aspect of getting caught by the police wasn't scary. But, despite him hardly knowing Kai, seeing a familiar face in all this mess was a relief, to say the least.

"Don't encourage him, son," Ray muttered, earning an eye roll from him.

"C'mon, Dad! Let him go. Jay's a pretty nice guy. And as far as Morro's concerned, he deserves worse than toilet paper. He's a real bully."

Jay was appalled to see Kai come to his defense. Always viewing him and his friends in the "carefree, popular kid" bubble, Jay had never expected this from him. It felt nice.

"Fine, I'm sparing you this time," Ray concluded on the behalf of his son, much to Jay's relief. "But let this be a lesson to you, alright?"

"Yes, sir!" Jay managed a small smile and a salute to lighten the mood.

At that moment, Ray felt his pocket vibrate. He fished out his cell phone and smiled when the caller turned out to be Nya.

"Hiya, sweetie! Got the gun?"

"Yeah, Dad. I'm at the station waiting for you."

"We'll be there in a few minutes, okay?" the father answered, checking his watch for the time.

"Sure. So, did anything interesting happen yet?"

"Does catching a seventeen-year-old boy from Kai's Math class sound interesting?" Ray asked prankishly.

"Ooh, is he a cute boy?" Nya asked.

"One second." Ray glanced over his shoulder back at Jay. "Hey, my daughter wants to know if you're cute?" He made sure his voice was loud enough for Nya to hear on the other end.

Jay was stunned for a while, watching in bewilderment as father and son exchanged teasing looks in the front. Then suddenly, his inner charm kicked in and he smiled. "I want to say yes, sir."

Ray chuckled and he could also make out Nya's muffled giggles over the phone.

"Okay, Dad," Nya laughed, "Enough joking around. Get over here already."

She and Ray promptly swapped goodbyes before hanging up. Ray grinned into the rearview mirror with a twinkle in his eyes. "You amuse me, Jay Walker."

"Glad to be of service," the boy joked. He paused to shift in his seat so that his sprained ankle would be in a more comfortable position before asking, "I didn't know you had a sister, Kai? I've never seen her at school."

"That's because she goes to a different school," Kai replied casually, pulling his legs down from off the dashboard. "She's sixteen but acts mature for her age. You'll like her, trust me." He tilted his lips at Jay who immediately turned away to hide his nervous smile.

"You seem like a cool guy, Walker. Why don't you bring your friends over some time," Kai offered with a shrug. "You already know Lloyd. Who knows, maybe we can all be good friends by the end of the summer?"

"Really?" Jay perked up. "That'd be great. Thanks!"

Kai nodded before turning to face the front and engrossing himself in a conversation with his father.

Jay sighed, ignoring the subtle pain in his ankle. Getting to be friends with one of the most popular guys in school and hanging out with his sister didn't seem like a bad outcome of a terribly failed prank.

"Good luck, Jay. Good luck," he whispered to himself with a faint smile.

"Just write either of your parent's number down and we'll contact them," Ray stated, placing a piece of paper and a pen in front of Jay.

The ginger stuttered. "Uh, no, I'm good. I'll just call my friend to pick me up since we were having a guy night at his place."

Ray raised an eyebrow and shrugged. "Suit yourself, kid."

Jay watched as the man walked away before bending over to inspect his bandaged ankle. He heard footsteps approach him and he assumed it was another officer. That is until he heard her.

"So, you're the cute guy Dad was talking about?" a pleasant voice asked.

Jay twisted around and saw a girl with dark hair tied into a high ponytail. She was only a few inches short and had a slightly darker skin tone than his. The blue-clad teen could only surmise that this was Nya.

To Kai, she may be the mature, tough teen.

To Ray, she may be the world.

But to Jay, she was the most beautiful girl he had ever laid eyes on.

Suddenly, the incidental phone call in the car felt like fate.

"Y-Yes," Jay faltered, feeling his palms getting sweaty. His hands shot up to settle his auburn curls while he tried to appear suave and nonchalant in general.

"Hm, I didn't expect you to actually be cute," the girl smiled, a hint of playfulness in the tone of her voice.

'And I didn't expect you to be this pretty,' Jay thought with a blush creeping onto his cheeks. However, his lips uttered a different reply, "Uh, thanks?"

"I'm Nya, Kai's sister." The girl extended her arm for a handshake. Jay made sure to wipe his hand off his pants to dry off the perspiration before taking a hold of hers.

"Jay Walker. Nice to meet you."

Nya leaned back against an office desk and eyed Jay with interest. "So, you wanna get home? Is it okay if I give you a lift?"

Jay froze. "You?"

"Mm-hm," the girl bobbed her head, throwing her ponytail into motion. "On my bike. I'm not a reckless driver and it's a pretty sweet ride."

Jay took this as a chance to get to know the girl better. However, the bickering voices of Ray and Kai from across the lobby prevented him from saying yes. He shot the duo a look before turning back to Nya.

"Do you think your dad and bro are gonna be okay with it?"

Nya rolled her eyes and shook her head. "Don't worry about them. As long as they're fighting, they won't notice anything else."

Did Jay want to give up the opportunity of getting a ride home from a pretty girl? Of course not.

"Okay, then," he said with a grin.

~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~

"You TP'd a bully's house? No way!" Nya exclaimed excitedly as she gunned the motor and ran the shiny black Harley-Davidson down the street. Her voice was already muffled due to her helmet and the bike's noise made it fainter still.

Jay, who was seated behind her with his arms wrapped around her torso, nodded. He realized she couldn't see him and that's when he did a mental facepalm. "Um, yeah! I did!" he yelled over the noise of the wind.

"Wicked cool!" the girl cheered, momentarily glancing back at her 'cute' acquaintance.

Jay narrowed his eyes and pouted in a joking manner. "Really? Being the daughter of a police officer, I figured you would be more of a law-abiding gal than a rebellious one."

"Yeah, that does seem like a more expected outcome, doesn't it?" Nya said. "But you gotta admit, even angels can't resist bending the rules these days."

Jay whistled in amazement. "You're a wild one, I can tell."

Nya laughed at that causing the ginger to smile. They were passing through the food street. The lit-up restaurants were nothing but a zooming blur of lights. Jay could see familiar sights that usually came along the way to Cole's house.

When sharing the address with Nya, she claimed that he lived only a few blocks away from her and that if Jay visited Cole a lot, then he could come to see her as well from time to time. Practically neighbors, Jay didn't think it would be difficult for Cole to hit it up with Kai and his friends. And Zane was nice enough to pal up with anyone.

"Here we are," Nya announced, pulling Jay out of his thoughts. "This is the one, right?"

The boy glanced up at the building on their right. "Yep, this is it."

Jay climbed off the bike (with great complication due to his foot) and handed Nya the spare helmet, thanking her for the ride.

"It's nothing," Nya said, flapping a dismissive hand. She smirked teasingly, "I like helping guys who truthfully admit they are cute."

Jay chuckled, stuffing his hands into his pockets. "You're never gonna let me live it down, are you?"

"Nope."

They teased each other with more jokes before Nya finally asked for Jay's number, which he happily gave up, taking hers in the process.

"Do you need help with that?" Nya nodded at Jay's foot.

"Nah, it's okay. I can manage," Jay responded, making sure not to put too much weight on his ankle. "Zane's basically a teenage nurse so I'm sure he'll look it over for me."

"Well, I'll see you around," the girl concluded, putting on her helmet once more. "Goodnight, Jay!"

"Bye," Jay waved, watching as Nya revved up her motorcycle and drove off and around the next corner.

A door slammed behind him.

"Dude, what the heck?!"

Jay immediately turned around (and quickly regretted it when his foot erupted in pain) and was met with the furious faces of his best friends. Well, only Cole's since Zane rarely looked angry.

"You're not answering our calls or texts, you're late and you have a bandaged ankle!" Cole raged, stomping towards the ginger. "I gave you a dare, not a permit to scare us to death! What happened to you?"

Silence reigned for a few seconds in which the three of them stood scrutinizing one another. Then Jay spoke.

"Would you believe me if I told you that after barely making out of there alive, I was escorted to safety by none other than police officer Ray Smith, got invited to hang out with his superstar of a son, and was dropped off home on a Harley-Davidson driven by his extremely beautiful daughter?"

Cole and Zane stared at him, dumbfounded.

"I should give you crazy dares more often."
