chapter 2
"Welcome," The man who opened the door greeted. Before I knew what was going on, my bags were collected by some women who seemed to be dressed in maid uniforms.
"Thank you?" I said, still confused at what was going on.
"Webster, you're still here!" My mother tackled the poor old man into a bone-crushing hug. I'm pretty sure she was a cheerleader when she was in high school.
"Katrina it's nice to see you again. Your sister is waiting for you and your daughter inside," He said looking at me.
"Come along then,"
We began walking down the hallway which was decorated with weird pictures of old people I never knew.
We finally stopped after what felt like the fifth hallway. He knocked on a big wooden double door.
"Come in." A voice called out. He opened the door.
"Miss June, Katrina and her daughter have arrived," Webster said boredly.
"I'll take my leave now." Then he was gone.
"June!" My mum called out enthusiastically. Before she gave her an equally bone-crushing hug like the one she gave Webster. My poor aunt awkwardly patted her back.
"Nice to see you again Katrina." Her eyes then turned to focus on me.
Although I knew aunt June was sixteen-years-older than my mum. She really looked old.
Her hair was almost completely gray with just some few strands of black sticking out. She had the same dark eyes that everyone in our family seemed to posses and an average petite stature that made her seem frail. Luckily, her face did not succumb to age as she did not have too many wrinkles.
I kinda understood why my mum wanted me to help her. But after seeing all the staff at the house that was there, I didn't think I was needed.
"You are quite a beautiful dear," Aunt June said nicely. I felt embarrassed that I just stood there staring at her.
"Thanks, aunt June, you have a really beautiful home," I said as politely as I could.
Even though they were sisters I knew she inherited the house and ran it while my mum went to enjoy the city life.
I started to feel guilty knowing I never cared to know her. I only knew how she looked through pictures, but according to my mum, she visited frequently when I was younger and she was my favorite aunt.
But now I couldn't remember anything about that.
"While I'm catching up with your mum, Mina would show you to your room," Aunt June said while my mum nodded in agreement.
I turned around and saw a pretty young blonde woman smile at me. She walked out and I followed her.
It kinda felt awkward since none of us talked. After what felt like decades even though it was just a few minutes. We arrived at a beautiful wooden door that looked just the same as the other doors. Except, it had my name written on it. Nice.
"This is your room," Mina said smiling even though I figured out that part.
"Your belongings are already inside. If you need anything, you can come to the kitchen, that's where you'll find me," then she was off.
Taking a breath, I opened the door. The room was simplistic, yet beautiful. The walls were Painted a nice milky color and the furniture was wooden like the rest of the house.
The bed looked especially inviting and I couldn't help but fall back and let its softness engulf me.
I could get used to this.
There was a knock on the door "Miss Lia, if you want you can come down for dinner or we can bring it to your room," Mina said.
Yep, maybe it won't be that bad here.
