chapter 1

'I regret coming here,' that was the only thought that was on my mind as we passed each tree on the roadside.

As if reading my mind, my mum turned and gave me an emphatic smile.

"I'm sorry honey. I really don't want you to go, but your aunt needs you more than I do right now, okay,"

Sighing loudly to show my irritation, I turned my head right back to the window as I continued to watch the trees and houses pass by.

It was such a strange town or maybe I was the strange one. After all, I was used to the city life. The parties, the friends, the fun. But here, it was different from the city.

While the city was always filled with the noise and chatter of many people, this town was filled with the sounds of birds chirping and trees rustling. Apart from that, it was extremely quiet.

"It's a ghost town mum. I haven't seen anyone on the street! I mean seriously, is that even possible?" I pushed out angrily, hoping she would change her mind and turn the car around.

She didn't.

"It's not a ghost town honey. This is my childhood town. People love their privacy here and love to stay indoors because of the weather,"

Ugh the weather, don't even get me started on the 'weather'

The whole town was practically covered in a blanket because of how dark it was. If I wasn't so angry I might have thought it was beautiful.

The street lights illuminated the dark empty streets and houses. It looked quite bizarre considering it was already noon.

"Ahhh, Smell that fresh air of Alister valley. It's so fresh compared to the city's air, right Lia," My mum said smiling nostalgically.

"All I can smell is my sadness," I muttered under my breath. Luckily my mum either didn't hear me or decided to ignore me. I'm pretty sure It was the latter.

"We're here," she announced.

We got down from the car and she went to open the boot while I looked up at the house. I couldn't help but gape at the house

It was HUGE.

It looked like one of those Victorian houses I thought only British people owned. In fact, all of the houses on the street looked equally amazing and similar.

Aunt June lives here? Wow, I guess I underestimated this place.

"Lia come and carry your bags and stop standing there like a scarecrow," my mum said with a smile on her face.

Only my mom would compare her daughter to an inanimate object used to scare birds.

I huffed and carried my bags as we walked towards the large doors of the house.

"This was my childhood home you know," my mum said, the smile still plastered on her face.

"If your house was this beautiful, why does ours in the city look like shit?" I couldn't help but ask.

"Language Lia! Also, city houses are really expensive. I think you're going to like coming here," she said looking hopeful.

"Nope!" I said simply.

No matter how glamorous the house was, it wouldn't contain my friends, my old room and my favorite ice cream store. I would never be happy here. And with that thought, the large double doors finally opened.
