Chapter 8

Logan sat on his porch in his backyard. With teen angst also comes an existential crisis every 5 minutes. He'd thought about a lot of things. In his free time, he liked to think. Just think, think and do nothing else. He'd thought about life, death, good, bad, his future. But, the one thing he'd never thought about, was love. And he was thinking about it now.

Why here? Why now? He asked himself as he sat on his porch steps, hearing the faint hum of hymns coming from his sister Eve's room. Then he heard footsteps behind him. He jumped up, ready to defend himself, but all he saw was his mother. He huffed a sigh of relief. "Mom." He breathed out.

"Logan." She smiled at him. "What is that girl's name?" She asked him nonchalantly like it wasn't all he could think about at the current moment.

"Mary. But I call her Eileen." He admitted honestly. "Mary what?" She, as a normal housewife, she knew all the mothers in town. "Mary Lianne." He said, sighing dreamily. She smirked.

"Aw, Logan, that's adorable." She pinched his cheek, which was turning pink. "Logan Taylor, I think you should ask that girl out." His mother said. Logan stared wide-eyes at her. "No! Of course not! I-I don't even like h-her like that! She's training to be a n-nun, mom!" The word nun barely came out of his lips.

"Logan, honey, I know her mother. Her mother said she's been changing recently and doesn't seem as dedicated as she used to be." His mother said, smiling at him. "It doesn't take much to love someone Logan. Sometimes even nothing at all. If you love someone you must take a leap of faith to make it work or else it will never happen." She said, frowning at the apple that she was playing with in her hands. "Logan," she stared straight at him with her hazel eyes. "No one but yourself is in control of your destiny. Your father may tell you that if you live under his roof you obey his rules, but Logan honey, he'll never give you any freedom if you listen." She smiled slightly.

"You're lucky I covered for you when you decided to run with Mary last weekend." She said, standing up and walking up the porch steps. "Logan, why don't you hang out with that girl today? Today is a good day." She smiled and walked inside to prepare dinner.

He set a look of determination on his face. Today was going to be a good day.

He walked up the cobblestone steps to Mary's house. He knocked on the door, his hands shaking. He was so worried he'd anger her parents and never be able to see her again. Despite what he had said about only being her teacher, he figured he could be her friend too.

A friend wasn't a lover. A friend wasn't someone you got butterflies in your stomach when they walked in the room. A friend would be by your side, though not at all times when you needed someone to love. A friend was someone you loved but not in that way. A friend helped you when you needed it and you would do the same for them. A friend was someone to vent to and someone who would listen. A friend is a shoulder to cry on and a pillow to hug when you needed it. A friend was someone who had your trust and you had theirs. A friend was so much more than a lover to him. A friend was someone he thought he needed. A friend was not what he thought of Mary Lianne.

But a friend was all he chose her to be.

A big, buff man opened the door. "Who are you?" He asked, a deep masculine tone to his voice. "U-Uh," he mentally scolded himself for stuttering. "I'm here for Mary, please? I'm her friend Logan." He said, trying not to be intimidated by this man. "YO MARE! SOME SCRAWNY KID'S HERE TO SEE YOU!" He shouted up the staircase. "IS IT ANTHONY?!" He heard a scream back. "NO NOT THIS TIME!" Anthony had visited her house before? What a prick. "WHO IS IT?!"

"HE SAID HIS NAME'S LOGAN!" He yelled like he wasn't standing right in front of him. "Oh Logan!" He heard a slight girlish squeal and he internally blushed. "Here, Mare is a typical girl you can wait here while she takes 3 hours to brush her hair." The man rolled his eyes. He gestured to the couch and Logan gladly sat on it. It was uncomfortable, but he still sat on it. He didn't want to embarrass himself in front of someone Mary obviously knew very well.

He looked around the house and saw typical Catholic house etiquette. Think Dolores Umbridge's office, except with neutral colors like tan and brown and more crosses and less cats. And a crap ton of doilies.

"Our mom designed it." The man said, answering his unsaid question, staring up the staircase in annoyance. "Our mom?" Logan asked, confused. "Like me and Mare." He said, confused he didn't catch his drift. He face palmed after a moment. "MARE YOU IDIOT!" The man yelled up the stairs. "YOU DIDN'T MENTION ME TO YOUR BOYFRIEND OVER HERE?!" He looked hurt.

"HE'S NOT MY BOYFRIEND!" She yelled back down. "IT JUST NEVER CAME UP IN CONVERSATION!" She retorted. The man sighed and rubbed his temples. "I'm Levi Lianne, Mary's older brother." He held out his hand to shake. Logan shook it. "I'm Logan Taylor." Logan said. "Yeah, I know, I've heard plenty about you."

Logan was surprised at this statement. "I'm sorry that my CLUELESS FORGETFUL SISTER forgot to mention HER LOVELY OLDER BROTHER SHE TELLS EVERYTHING TO!" He yelled up the stairs yelling more to Mary than Logan.

"So what got you to hang out with my prissy sister?" He asked, sitting down next to him. "Um, well, I bumped into her in the hallway and well..." he paused. What did get him intrigued about Mary?

What do you think about Levi?

What about Anthony visiting her more than once?

Love y'all!!! <3
