Chapter 10
As Mary watched the only freedom she'd ever had in her life walk away, a song tumbled out of the speaker.
(Ight, you know the drill, Walking on Sunshine by Katrina & The Waves)
It literally quoted exactly how she felt. "LOGAN!" She called for him, but he ignored her. Where did he find this song? "LOGAN JOSEPH TAYLOR!" He froze for a second, but kept walking after a little while. Damn it. He was ignoring her and walking away from her. He was ready to kick all of this in the dust.
But she was not.
"LOGAN!" She ran after him, trying anyways, in her gray dress and Mary Jane's. "LOGAN!" He kept walking, even though his heart was screaming for him to go back, his head said to leave. His head said leave before you get hurt. And he was done hurting. His heart was clawing at his chest and pounding on the cage it was locked in; his heart was doing logic injustice. Logan was a realist at heart, and he knew this wasn't going to end well. If he went back, he knew his Eileen would hurt him just as everyone always did.
He never gave into what his heart felt. His brain was right, he knew, and he would continue to follow it until it took him to his grave. Hopefully, then, his heart could finally be at peace with his brain.
"Logan." He heard an exasperated, desperate plea from behind him, but he ignored it. He wasn't sure of who it was who called his name like that, but his heart did. And when, unless it was good for you, was one's heart ever wrong? "Logan..." He heard a firm thud and whipped around to see Mary on the ground. Shit.
He ran to her and fell on his knees, right by her side. "WHAT THE FUCK!" He screamed out to the sky. His Eileen was breathing heavy and he couldn't seem to shake her awake. What the fuck just happened? "Eileen." He shook her. "Eileen, baby..." he shook her again. He didn't even understand what was happening, he just knew she had to be okay. Or he could never live with himself. He had to take her back to her house, they would know what to do. Nothing looked too serious for a hospital. How was he going to bring her to her house? An idea popped into his head.
He quickly lifted her into his arms. He knew where her house was and got there in no time. He knocked on the door, and he saw Levi. He didn't do anything and just stood there, staring at his little sister. "My arms are getting tired, man." Logan chuckled nervously. Levi averted his eyes to Logan. "Lemme guess, she was running?" Levi asked pointedly. "Yes." Logan said, confused by the question. He'd just processed the fact she was running after him.
"Mhmm. You see, Mare has asthma. Not very serious asthma. Like she only needs to take a breath from the inhaler once a day and she's not supposed to become very exasperated or do physical activities. Which is why you won't see her in gym at school." Levi explained. "Oh." Was Logan's only reaction. Then why did she never faint when they danced? "So yeah keep that in mind." Levi said, taking Mary from Logan's arms.
"This is all my fault." He muttered, leaving Mary to Levi and walking to his house. He walked into the house to find it silent. And no, the house is not empty. People are just quiet. People in his family never rebelled or got in trouble or argued with each other. He hated the silence.
His world was so quiet, all the time, that when music filled his ears he immediately felt better. The wonderful world of sounds fascinated him. Music was so pleasing to the ear, so amazing. How could anyone live without it? And then he met Mary. Mary was quiet. Mary never talked unless she was asked to. Mary never rebelled or spoke against something she felt was wrong. She just kept it to herself.
But when she did speak, was music to his ears. When she laughed, everything died away. It was only them, dancing to the beat of an unheard melody. To the rhythm of an unspoken song, and her whole existence was a breath of fresh air. What he would give, to have his Eileen in his arms forever and always, was actually quite dangerous. He would die for her without a second thought.
He would give his life so she could live hers, for he had lived much longer in his life than she has in hers. He understands why he lives now, and he's helping Mary figure out why she does. And he knows, in his heart, that he wants her badly and whatever he feels for her is not going to go away, but his brain has not quite processed that yet.
He was in love with Mary Frances Lianne.
And he wasn't sure how he felt about that yet.
