Chapter Two: Return of Five
Luther requested us all in the living area, Diego and Allison took chairs near the fire. Vanya and I had the right hand couch as Luther sat on the opposite one. Klaus was being his normal self as he was at the bar, getting himself a drink. Not one of us looked at one another, we were in our own little worlds, as the air was silent and kind of awkward - if I was going to be honest.
"Um," Luther began, breaking the peaceful silence as he rose to his feet. "I guess we should get this started," he began. "So, I figured we could have a sort of memorial service in the courtyard at sundown. Say a few words, just at Dad's favourite spot," Luther announces the plan in his head for Dad's memorial.
"Dad had a favourite spot?" Allison asks, as I also didn't think he had a favourite spot in the house, maybe besides his study.
"You know, under the oak tree," Luther replied, but Allison's eyes left his as she didn't know that. "We used to sit out there all the time. None of you ever did that?" His eyes flickered from Allison to the rest of us.
"Will there be refreshments?" Klaus came swooning in from our right around the couch, holding a glass of whiskey in his hand, and a cigarette in the other. Also holding a trophy - which I do not know why. "Tea? Scones? Cucumber sandwiches are always a winner," he was making jokes as he always does with that sense of humour he has.
"What? No. And put that out. You know Dad didn't allow smoking in here," Luther demanded that Klaus put that cigarette out.
"Is that my skirt?" Allison raises her voice slightly, as my eyes dropped to Klaus's choice of pants, and it was a skirt.
"What?" He asks, placing the trophy down on the side table. "Oh, yeah, this," he began while turning to face her. "I found it in your room. It's a little dated, I know, but it's very breathy on the bits," Klaus waved his hand to his private parts, making me snicker at him. He could always make a joke out of anything.
"Listen up," Luther raised his voice, grabbing the attention of us all. "Still some important things that we need to discuss, all right?" What could be more important right now.
"Like what?" Diego finally spoke, his eyes locking onto his brother.
"Like the way he died," Luther announces.
"And here we go," Diego turned his head away as he spoke as he knew the subject was going to be brought up again.
"I don't understand. They said it was a heart attack," I spoke up my eyes on Luther, as I felt the couch dip to my left as Klaus squeezed his arse into the space that was free.
"Yeah, according to the coroner," Luther replied, as I knitted my eyebrows together as they would know the cause of his death.
"Well, wouldn't they know?" Vanya took the words straight from my mouth.
"Theoretically," Luther was trying to find something that we couldn't see or there was nothing unnatural about our Dad's death.
"Theoretically?" Allison repeated the word as she was getting at that it couldn't be as simple as heart failure that killed dear Dad.
"I'm just saying, at the very least, something happened," Luther took his gaze from Allison to Diego. "The last time that I talked to Dad, he sounded strange," as he spoke his eyes met with all of us. Klaus gurgled on the whiskey and lent back into the couch, but I couldn't make out what he said.
"Strange how?" Allison ignored Klaus's none-verbal comment.
"He sounded on edge. Told me I should be careful who to trust," I understood about Luther's concern for this, but our Father was an old man.
"Luther, he was a paranoid, bitter old man, who was starting to lose what was left of his marbles," Diego spoke while raising from his chair and took a few steps to Luther.
"No. He must have known something was going to happen," Luther was dismissive of Diego's comment and so sure that Dad knew what was going to happen to him. "Look, I know you don't like to do it, but I need you to talk to Dad," his eyes locked on with Klaus now. I hear Allison scoff at Luther's demand of Klaus, as we all know he didn't like to commune with the dead.
"I can't just call Dad in the afterlife and be like, 'Dad, could you just... stop playing tennis with Hitler for a moment and take a quick call?" See humour in everything he says, and Klaus never truly liked his power.
"Since when? That's your thing,"
"I'm not in the right... frame of mind," Klaus chose the right set of words, but I think it's because he was high.
"You're high?" I asked speaking my mind from the side of him.
"Yeah! Yeah!" He spoke with laughter as he stared at me for a moment. "I mean, how are you not, listening to this nonsense?" Klaus went back to slumping on the couch.
"Well, sober up, this is important," Luther ordered as he was the leader of the group since we were young and we always listened to him. I hear Klaus sigh as I know he would have shut off listening. I elbowed him in the side making him jolt slightly. "Then there's the issue of the missing monocle,"
"Who gives a shit about a stupid monocle?" Diego states as he didn't see the point in Luther being obsessed with finding the monocle.
"Exactly," Luther turns his large frame to face Diego. "It's worthless. So whoever took it, I think it was personal. Someone close to him. Someone with a grudge," I couldn't believe what I was hearing right now.
"Where are you going with this?" Klaus pipes up, not clearly understanding what Luther was trying to say.
"Oh, isn't it obvious, Klaus?" Diego turned his head back to Luther. "He thinks one of us killed Dad," Diego confirmed my current thought of what Luther was trying to get at. Luther looks away from Diego, grunting softly at his comment his jaw locking. The air was silent for a moment, as he didn't speak, meaning it was true.
"You do?" Klaus sounded surprised in his own way. I just shook my head and looked away from Luther's gaze.
"How could you think that?" Vanya asks, her voice soft but holding a hint of anger.
"Great job, Luther. Way to lead," Diego mocked him in a way, as he began to walk away. I placed a hand onto my forehead as I missed what Luther spoke.
"You're crazy, man. You're crazy," Klaus shot up from the couch and began to collect his things. "Crazy," he called Luther once again.
"I've not finished," he states to us as Diego is gone and Klaus is going.
"Ok. Sorry, I'm just gonna go murder Mom. Be right back," Klaus retorted but obviously it was a joke. Vanya also got up from the couch also and began to walk away from this meeting.
"Way to go," I state as I rose from the couch as I see Luther try to form words but he mumbles out some single words, but I was out of range before he knew it. The one place I felt like going now was my old room and that where I went...
*******************
I sat in front of my plain white vanity table within my old room, it was like I left it seventeen years ago. The room was the same make of Allison's, as we had similar styles back then, it was also located down the hallway from hers and Luther's. My room was located next to Diego's just the door before his. I stared at myself in the vanity mirror, forcing myself to smile at this point, because I gave all my smiles away in a sense, and now there wasn't any left for myself. I was always the kind hearted girl in the group, I cared so much for my siblings and loved them deeply. But right now, we were divided and not really much of a family, we're just a group of people who lived under the same roof for years...
My thoughts got lost as the sound of loud music came echoing down the hallway, and into my room. I waited a moment to hear the song begin and get into the rhythm. It was the song 'I think we're alone now' by Tiffany, it was a catchy song.
"Children behave, that's what they say when we're together. And watch how you play. They don't understand and so we're running just as fast as we can," The song blasted through the house as my foot was tapping to the rhythm of the music. "Holdin' on to one another's hand. Tryin' to get away into the night and then you put your arms around me and we tumble to the ground and then you say. I think we're alone now-" I stood to my feet and began to dance to the music just swaying side to side as I was feeling the groove of the song. "There doesn't seem to be anyone around... I think we're alone now. The beating of our hearts is the only sound," I was feeling this in my bones as I put more effort into my dancing as I did a little heart pounding gesture. I began to lip-sync along to the words that were coming out and danced my way through the song, feeling myself smile genuinely and quite content. I did a shimmer here, a twirl there, and it felt like I was a child again. The song continued and the words seemed to block out, but I kept on dancing my way through, and enjoyed it...
Suddenly, thunder rumbled through the whole house, but it came from outside. The music stopped abruptly. The whole house began to shake violently like we were having an earthquake, making me grab onto the vanity table as I see in the reflection a dagger that Diego once gave me began to vibrant on the wall as I hung it there. I spun around quickly to see it shake and suddenly rip from the wall and head straight for me. Quick as a flash I held up my hands in shock as it happened so fast, but the knife froze in mid-air, inches from my face. I let out a breath of relief as I reached out and grabbed the handle of the knife as it unfroze at my touch. I pocketed it in my pants and made my way to the door. I rip it open just in time to see Allison and Luther rushing pass and heading outside...
In no time we met up with everyone and headed to the courtyard, Diego kicked open the doors outside as we all passed. Wind was howling as a blue light was emitting from the sky. Lightening strikes out of nowhere as I step outside to see a wormhole of some kind formed in the courtyard.
"What is it?" Vanya asked over the whaling of the wind.
"Don't get too close!" Allison came out pressing her hand onto Luther's. As I positioned myself to the left of Diego.
"Yeah, no shit," Diego remarks as we had no clue what this thing was.
"Looks like some sort of temporal anomaly," Luther raises his voice over the howling wind and thunder. "Either that or a miniature black hole. One of the two," Luther explained as it could be a black hole now.
"Pretty big difference there, Paul Bunyan," Diego remarked as there was a difference between an anomaly and a freaking black hole.
"Out of the way!" Klaus's voice came from behind but he barrages passed Luther and Diego and began to use the fire hydrant on the anomaly, but it didn't work so he threw it into it and it was transported into it. God knows where.
"What is that gonna do!" I yelled over to him as that was very pointless.
"I don't know. Do you have a better idea?" Klaus asks but we never really done this before nor know what this is. Electricity began to be more violent and volatile. Klaus begins to step back as Luther reaches out and pushes him back.
"Everybody get behind me," Luther yells as Klaus was now behind him.
"Yeah, get behind us," Diego joined in as they were the men of the house, I suppose. I felt Diego's left gloved hand on my stomach, as he was keeping me back, as he was worried for my safety and was protecting me.
"I vote for running, c'mon!" Klaus yells out but we couldn't just run and leave this to grow or pop whatever out. In the wormhole I could see a figure began to take shape, like someone was pushing through the boundary and trying to reach this side. Within seconds, the person was through and began to fall as the wormhole snapped closed. I shot out my left hand as the person levitated above the ground for a moment before I dropped my hand and the person fell, but it was a softer landing. The thunder fades and the sky cleared as we began to walk forward to the person on the floor. But the person slowly got up from the ground and stood, my eyes widened in shock...
"Does anyone else see little Number Five, or is that just me?" Klaus asks, thinking he was seeing a dead person, but this was very much real.
"Five?" I breathed out as today was full of surprises. His eyes locked onto me for a moment before they went to himself as he was checking out what he was wearing.
"Shit," he states as it was really him. I couldn't believe it, after all these years of him being 'dead' he was actually standing in front of us, alive and well. But the scary part was, why now?
