Chapter Thirteen: Apocalypse
Hours had passed, and the new day was upon us and Five was awake and told us what was truly happening with him and why he was gone. The fucking apocalypse was upon us and he waits until now to tell us. To let us in to help him sort it all out. My mind was racing with the different possibilities on what Five had spoke. I pace up and down the room, passing Luther on the way as he sat in a chair, a few inches away from the bed as Five was on the edge, leaning onto his legs as he stares at Luther and myself.
"When's it supposed to happen?" Luther's voice echoed in my ears as I stopped my pacing and came to stand to the left of Luther. "This... apocalypse," he spoke, sending a cold shiver down my spine.
"I can't give you the exact hour, but-" Five began as I stare at him, waiting for the answer. "From what I could gather, we have four days left," I couldn't help but scoff at him as this was unbelievable, he always was a little shit for going at things alone.
"Why didn't you say something sooner?" Luther spoke, annoyed with our Brother, but of course he knew what he was like with this.
"It wouldn't have mattered," Five replied in a low voice.
"Of course it would have," I pipped up as I didn't want to remain quiet anymore. "We could've come together and helped you try and stop this," Five was now locked eyes with me, but he didn't seem phased by my comment.
"For the record, you already tried," Five replied low once again, making me frown at him, his eyes flickered between us.
"What do you mean?" Luther asked, wondering what he meant. But his gaze was on the floor, trying to find the courage to tell us.
"I found all of you," Five began, his eyes rose from the ground and to us. "Your bodies," he sounded so heartbroken about finding us.
"We die?" Luther spoke, as I couldn't believe it. No wonder he's been so cold towards us, we found us all dead. I couldn't imagine how he must have felt, and the guilt of it all following him around for over Forty-Five years.
"Horribly," he went on, making me feel sad and I just wanted to go up to him and give him a hug - but he wasn't an affectionate type.
"Oh, Five," my tone was in distress and concern for him.
"You were together, trying to stop whoever it was that ends the world," Five explained, meaning we all banded together to stop whoever it was, but we were unsuccessful and died in the process.
"Wait, how do you know that?" Luther asked, but Five goes into his blazer pocket and pulls free a cloth and unwraps it.
"This was clutched in your dead hand when I found you," Five revealed a glass eye as he held it up to us.
"A glass eye?" I asked with a frown as he throws it to Luther and he catches it in his hands.
"Must've ripped it out of their head right before you went down," Five suggested the idea as that's the only possible way he could have gotten the eye.
"Whose head?" Luther asks, holding the glass eye up to examine it.
"Like I said, I don't know," Five announce, not having a clue who it belonged too.
"Well, there's a serial number on the back. Think maybe you could try--"
"No, that's a dead end," Five cuts off Luther as he must have already gone down this route and it lead nowhere. Five chuckles softly at the thought. "It's just another hunk of glass," as it was useless now and he had no direction to go with it. Luther extends his arm out, and reaches over to give it to Five who leans and grabs it. Suddenly, the door to the room was kicked open, making me jump out of my skin and turn around to see Diego looking rather mad.
"Piece of shit," he sounded angry as he banged his feet down the steps, this was serious. He was emotional and very angry. "Do you have any idea what you just did?!" Diego bolted straight over as I took a few steps back, coming to stand to the right of Five as Diego slams into Luther who grabs him tightly and lifted him up in the air. "Nope, let me-- Get your ape hands off of me!" He yells at Luther as he dangles inches from the ground.
"I can do this as long as it takes you to calm down," Luther spoke calmly, knowing he could keep him there until he was calm.
"Diego calm down or I'll freeze you," I took a step forward, my eyes burning into his as he knew I meany it. He stopped struggling against Luther's hold, as he was panting slightly.
"Fine," he gave in, and Luther drops Diego back on the good, his knives clattered together due to the drop.
"Now, wanna tell us what you're talkin' about?" Luther asked, wanting to know what he was so angry about.
"Our brother's been pretty busy since he got back. He was in the middle of that shootout at Griddy's, and then at Gimble Brothers, after the guys in mask attacked the Academy, looking for him," Diego was pissed as he points at Five advancing his point.
"None of which is any of your concern," Five remained calmed as he just stared at Diego.
"It is now," he began, his breathing picked up into a pant. "They just killed my friend," Diego was very upset, and angry about who killed his friend. I sighed as my gaze on Diego was soft as I felt so sorry for him right now.
"Who are they, Five?" I questioned, my head turning to the left to look at him, as he met my gaze. My eyes were pleading with him as we needed to know, so we were able to protect one another.
"They work for my former employer. A woman called The Handler," Five began to explain, his eyes moving from my eyes to our Brother's. "She sent them, to stop me. Then, soon as Diego's friend got in their way, well, fair game," Five sounded so cold about it.
"And now they're my fair game," Diego spoke, getting more angry with each word her spoke. "And I'm gonna see to it they pay," he was so set on bringing justice to the people who killed his friend, but that was a suicide mission as he bean to walk from the room.
"That would be a mistake, Diego," Five warned him before I could speak up. "They've killed people far more dangerous than you," Five told him what they could do but he was so dead set on it.
"Yeah, we'll see about that," he spoke, as he was at the door and passed it, using his hand to slam it shut.
"Let me talk to him," I spoke quickly, as I passed Luther and rushed up the steps and ripped open the door, following after Diego. I picked up my pace as I see Diego crossing the gym, and around the boxing ring. "Diego stop! Diego!" I shout after him, but he kept on walking. In annoyance, I flicked my fingers out to him and he froze in mid-step, I know I shouldn't get in his way, but this was going to get him killed. I rushed toward him and we stood at the corner of the boxing ring, I stopped in front of him and pointed at his head with my index finger and swirled it around. As his head unfroze and his eyes adjusted.
"Damn it Gwen!" He raises his voice at me. "Let me go!" He kept with his raised voice, as his eyes flared up in anger.
"This is a suicide Diego, you're going to get yourself killed, and I can't just stand by and watch," I rush out to him, worry laced my tone.
"Then come with me and help," he pleaded, but I wasn't that person anymore. I left that all behind when I left the academy. It's true I help people because I was a caring person.
"That's not me anymore," I began shaking my head at him. "This person must have meant a lot to you. I can see how upset and angry you are," Diego scoffed at my comment as he wasn't one to show emotions as well. "Look I can't stop what you do, I can only hope you do the right thing," I reached out and touched his right cheek, trying to offer him comfort, but he just turns his head away from me. "Be careful," I said with hope, hoping he would be, as I lowered my hand and he unfroze, in that moment. Diego didn't bring his gaze back around and just continued to walk out. I, myself - couldn't even turn to see him go, as I didn't want to be the last memory of him...
I made it back to the backroom as Five continued his story on who he worked. This organisation who sent people out to kill people to make the timeline be on track and not divert from the original one they see fit. The one which ends all life on Earth and brings forth the apocalypse.
"They tuned me into the perfect instrument for rehabilitation of the time continuum. Or 'corrections' as they called them... I wasn't the only one. There are others like me," Five was explaining what it was like to work for them and what they did to make him a killer. "Beings out of time, fractured, extracted from the lives that they knew. They don't know how they got there. But I do know that none of them were as good as me," Five was like the perfect assassin in the eyes of them, and I couldn't believe it. "They didn't realise it, but I was biding my time, trying to figure out the right equation so I could get back. If I could just get back, I knew I could stop the apocalypse. Save the world," Five was so sure he could prevent the world from ending. "So, I broke my contact," Five explained on how he went back in time to the moment we saw the wormhole in the courtyard and him falling through.
"So," Luther's voice came out, bringing me back into reality as he hands Five a plate with food on. "You were a hit man?" He asked, not sugar coating it.
"Yes," Five replied bluntly as there was no way around it and grabs the cup off of Luther.
"You had a code, right?" I asked, coming over to the bed, and sitting beside him. "You didn't just kill randomly," I wasn't too sure what it was like for Five or how they all worked.
"No code. We took out anyone who messed with the time line," Five spoke, his eyes staring straight out not meeting one of ours gaze.
"What about innocent people?" Luther questioned, wanting to know if he murdered innocent people.
"It was the only way I could get back here," Five said as it was true, I couldn't help but squeeze my eyes shut for a moment, not wanting to believe it.
"But that's murder," Luther sounded angry with Five.
"Jesus, Luther, grow up. We're not kids anymore. There's no such things as good guys or bad guys. There's just people, goin' about their lives. But when the world ends, all those people die, including our family," Five eyes cocked between Luther and I. "Time changes everything," Five said, knowing that it was true, time changes all.
"The years you've been alone, with no one to talk too. I can't fathom how you must have felt, and just thinking about it makes me sad," tears began to swell in my eyes, as thinking about it makes me want too weep. Five looks at me as he could see the tears glisten in the light.
"Jesus, Gwen, you're worse than a baby," Five mocked, as my expression dropped to a announced one as I shook my head at him. I flicked my fingers out to him and he froze in his place, his body moved back thinking I was gonna hit him, his eyes widen as he froze without any movement.
"Gwen," Luther spoke giving me a disapproved look.
"He's being a prick," I replied back to Luther he only smirks and nods his head at me. "So he can stay like that for a few," I announce lifting from the edge of the bed, and walked around the room as I wiped my eyes, getting rid of the tears...
But it doesn't change on how I feel...
