Chapter Seventeen: Day I Wished (Part Two)
(Warning: Sensitive Material Ahead)
*Four years ago*
It was late March of 2015, six months earlier Gwen found out she was pregnant and she couldn't have been more thrilled or excited to welcome her baby into the world. Simon too was excited for his baby daughter or son to come into the world and become a family together. They both agreed to wait until after the baby was born to get married as Gwen wanted to fit into her dress.
Gwen placed her hand onto her bump, which wasn't fully developed yet as she was only six months in. But her belly was well on its way. Simon and Gwen agreed not to find out the gender until the baby was born.
"You have three uncles and two aunts, they were part of Mommy's Academy days," Gwen spoke softly to her baby in the womb as she rubs her stomach from the fabric of her shirt. "Back then there were eight of us. Mommy had seven siblings to play with and make memories and I cherished each one. But your uncle Five went missing and then four years later your uncle Ben died. It hit us all and we all broke up and went our separate ways," Gwen thought back to the days that the Umbrella Academy was at full force as it brought a smile to her face. "But your Mommy will never forget about them, there isn't a day that goes by when I don't think about them. What could be, what life would be like. If we were all still be at the Academy together, but I cannot change the past," tears began to form in her eyes as she misses her family deeply. But she had her own family to worry about now.
"Speaking to my little lad," Simon's voice boomed from behind Gwen making her spin to see him with a smile on his face.
"Do you mean girl," Gwen shot back at him, as both of them wanted the baby to be a boy or a girl.
"I mean men run in my family," Simon cracks a smile as he steps closer to Gwen in their small apartment but it was roomy for them. He wraps his arms around her, and pulls her in close. "I don't care what gender it is. He or she will make us so much happy," Simon spoke with love in his voice and Gwen could tell. Simon leans in and gives Gwen a passionate kiss, their lips fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. The tender kiss lasted a few moments, as they both took their time to soak in this moment.
"I love you," Gwen spoke as they both pulled back from the kiss, but rested their foreheads on one another.
"And I love you," Simon replied sweetly, making Gwen's heart flutter with joy. Suddenly, Gwen lets out a grunt, as a sharp pain surged through her back like daggers piercing her skin. "Gwen? What's wrong?" Simon rushes out, worried for her.
"I-I don't know," she replied in pain as another surge ran through her back making her cry out in pain and fall into Simon's arms. Just then, water leaked from her joggers due to the amniotic sac bursting. "Oh God!" Gwen felt the liquid drip down her legs as a poodle formed on the floor. "It's too early!" She exclaims in horror as tears formed in her eyes and dripped down. Another pain shot through her, as she grips her belly.
"Come on!" Simon spoke, gripping Gwen tightly by the arms and began to carry her through the apartment and to his car. "Take deep breathes," Simon instructed her but he was scared for her life and the life of his baby...
But life had other plans for them...
........................
Simon paces the hallway of the hospital, Gwen's screams filled the air, as hearing her like this did something to him. Made him want to cry as he wanted to be with her. A Doctor and a Nurse were inside the room, and instructed him to stay out. Another piercing scream echoed in his ears, making me pace more with worry and worry building up. His hands were shaking, his mind racing with possibilities he didn't like to think about.
"Push," a nurse told Gwen, but she didn't want too, but her body was doing it for her. She was laid in a bed, her legs up and spread as the Doctor and Nurse were down there. "The head is crowing," the nurse told the Doctor.
"Ok Miss Miller, I need you to push with all you got," the Doctor told her in a deep voice, as he was a man, trained in this. Gwen gathered all the courage she could, and pushed as hard as she could, screaming as tears ran down her red rosy cheeks. With a big final push, the baby was born, and Gwen lets out a sigh as it was over. She waited for the baby to cry or make some sort of noise, but it never did.
"Come on baby," A nurse spoke as she had cut the umbilical cord, and began to take measures to get the baby kicking.
"What's a matter?!" Gwen rushes out as sweat poured from her forehead and tears continued to run down her cheeks. The nurse tried all she did, but the baby wouldn't response to the actions taken to outside stimuli. The nurse looked to the Doctor and shook her head, a sad expression fell upon them. The nurse wrapped up the baby in a blanket, she was so tiny and not fully developed.
"I'm so sorry Miss Miller," the Doctor began as Gwen eyes widen in horror as the tears kept on flowing and her heart broke. "You had a baby girl," the Doctor said as Gwen lent back on the pillows and cried her eyes out.
"You can hold her," the nurse spoke coming around and caring the little girl in her arms. Gwen looked up and sobbed, the nurse leans down and places the tiny baby in her arms. Once the baby was in her grasp, she looks down, her complexion blue and lifeless, but it brought Gwen comfort to see her child.
"My baby girl," she sobbed the words out, as she leans down and kisses her baby forehead. The Doctor broke the news to Simon and he came running in, and saw Gwen in tears, puffy red eyes and broken. Simon didn't say a word and rushed to her side and saw the tiny baby in her grasp. He couldn't contain his own tears and broke down beside her, both parents heart broken, both haunted by the death of their child. After moments with their child, the nurse came and took her away, they couldn't do anything but cry. Once the baby was out of the room, Gwen clung onto Simon for dear life, not wanting to let go and screamed in anguish for the loss of her child. Unknown to Gwen, the windows in the room cracked, spitting from the centre of the glass and spread out like a spiders web.
Gwen and Simon wouldn't know what was to come in the next days or even months. All that pain and grieve will eat them up...
........................
After a good cry with Allison I went to my bedroom, and sat on the edge of the bed, photographs in my hands of us all when we were children. The tears seemed to stop but my eyes were still red and raw. I told Allison my secret, a secret that I kept for all these years, and Allison understood where I was coming from. Probably now understood why I snapped at her a few days ago. I shift the current photo of us all, to a photo of Diego and I, smiling in our uniforms and masks. I smiled sweetly at the image, but we aren't this close anymore, after Ben's death and we all split. Just then, a swift firm knock came to my door, making me cock my head up.
"Come in," my voice was low but carried through the air, as the door twisted open to revel Diego entering my room, his arm still in the sleeve. "Oh Diego, I didn't expect you to-"
"I'm here to say sorry," Diego spoke, cutting me off, as my eyes widen gently as I wouldn't have expected him too. He came in and shuts the door behind him.
"No, I'm the one who should be sorry. I should have considered the way you were feeling," I announce to him, as he stepped over to the bed, and sat himself down to my left, near the top of the bed, a inch gap between us as my eyes never left him. "I'm so sorry about your friend, I know she meant a lot to you," I reached out and took his gloves hand into mine, the one that wasn't currently wounded. "If you need anything, you can talk to me," I squeezed his hand in support.
"What you looking at?" Diego spoke, shifting the tension and the conversation to what I had in my hand.
"Oh, us," I told him, bringing the photograph over to him and he took it in his hand which I let go of. He looks over the image as we were about thirteen at the time, and very close. "We were so young and best of friends. To be fair, I had a crush on you, as Allison did Luther," I blurted out for some reason, feeling comfortable right now. I see Diego cock his gaze to me, with a raised eyebrow. "What? We were children, and I was impressionable at the idea," I chuckled through my words, as Diego cracks a smile.
"I remembered all the fun we had together, all the talks, the jokes, the game," Diego spoke suggesting the game we played with the knives. "I remember Mom finding us in my room, playing with knives and I threw one at you just as the door opened, you used your power to fling the knife into the doorframe, inches away from Mom," Diego remembered the memory very well, making me laugh as it was a good memory of us both. We met eyes with one another, as my smile was wide. "I've missed your smile over the years," he spoke making me smile more at his comment.
"And I've missed the cold exterior Diego, but inside your really a softie with a big heart," I countered him nudging his arm as I let out a chuckle. Diego places the photo to the side, as his eyes never left mine, the dark warm chocolate eyes he has does something to me when I stare into them for so long. I could see his face inch closer to me and mine to his, it was so natural and like a force was pulling us together. Within seconds, our faces were close, and our lips barely touching, I could feel his warm breath against my face. In that moment, Diego took the plunge and his lips connected to mine. The kiss was electrifying, and sent chills through my whole body, his lips tasted so good, but he was also gentle with the kiss. I reached up and touched his cheek as the kiss carried on, becoming passionate with each second. The kiss lingered as we pulled apart from one another, and our eyes met, as he felt what I felt. I was utterly speechless, at this as he was the same.
"I-I-" I couldn't form a sentence, I couldn't do anything but to stare at him.
"Do you want to come with me to take Mom for a walk?" Diego asks, as the question wasn't relevant to the point, but my eyes frowned in confusion.
"I thought Mom died?" I asked with knitted brows.
"No, she's active. She doesn't remember anything from the past week," Diego states, his tone kind of glad that she doesn't remember. "It would be nice for her and I, if you come," I smiled at his comment, and I nodded my head, as it would be great to walk with him and Mom.
.................
Diego, Mom and I walked in the park, it was now night time, the air was crisp and lovely for the time of the year. A blank trench coat was wrapped around me, as Mom was to my left, as she was interlocked with Diego and I on both sides.
"Dad was wrong for keeping you locked up all those years. I should have said something. We all should have," Diego spoke up as we kept walking, but Mom's hands slipped out from our arms, making Diego and I stop and turn to look at her.
"There's something else that needs to be said, Diego, Gwen," Mom spoke carefully like it was so important.
"What is it Mom?" I asked as she came closer to us, grabbing a hand each from us.
"Pogo and I... We've been lying. Lying to all of you," she spoke, as we had no idea what she was on about. What could make our own Mother and another close friend to lie to us all...
What could be so dangerous to know...
