0.0 Things Just Aren't Working

Lily Owens had always known she was different from the other kids who lived in her small town in Maine. From the way she could always feel the vibrations of the earth to how she could always save a dying plant, something set her apart from everyone else. Everyone at her school thought Lily was weird because of how she would talk about the life around them, almost as if she could hear what the earth was saying. That was because she actually could. Lily not only felt the earth's vibrations, but she could communicate with the earth as well.

At the age of twelve years old, Lily told her mother about her 'problems'. Her mother responded by telling her that she was a fairy. Lily did not believe her mother, but she was told that her mother was a fairy as well. She was an earth fairy. After showing her daughter how she could manipulate a flower in their house just by using her hands, Lily believed her mother, and the girl was sent away to live with her uncle, Ben.

Ben worked as the botany teacher at a school called Alfea. It was located in the Otherworld, a home to most young Fairies and Specialists. Faries are magical creature who are able to control a specific element. Specialists are warriors who are tasked to protect the Otherworld from anything that could harm them.

Lily spent her entire late childhood at Alfea, and began to master her powers. However, she could not officially attend the school until she was sixteen years old. The girl longed for that day. She loved the earth, and she wanted to be able to understand her connection to it fully.

The girl spent most of her time in the gardens at Alfea, where she met a boy. His name was Riven, and he was a specialist. Riven had severe anger issues, and he would come to the gardens whenever he would need to get away. Soon enough, Lily would be the one to make him calm.

The two teenagers began to spend time together every day, and their friendship grew fast. The boy had been in love with Lily ever since he first met her, but Lily just viewed the boy as a friend. This was until Riven turned sixteen and began his training at Alfea. As the boy matured, so did Lily's feelings for him. Halfway through the year, the two started dating, and Lily began to feel things that she had never felt for anyone before. She worried about Riven every day, and she wanted him to hold her every night.

The two loved each other more than they knew they could ever love another person. This kind of love was envied by other students. One of these students happened to be Lily's best friend, Stella.

Stella had just been broken up with by Riven's best friend, Sky. She hated seeing Lily so happy while she was suffering, but she could never say this to Lily.

"I just think that being so invested in a relationship isn't going to be the best idea when you start school next year. You'll need to focus on your powers, and he's just going to be a distraction that you don't need right now. Break it off, love."

Lily trusted everything that Stella said even if she shouldn't, so Stella's words cut deep. The earth fairy began to question everything about her relationship with Riven. Her connection to the earth was the most important thing to her. She would never let anything jeopardize that.

"I don't understand, Lil." Riven stared at the girl in front of him as he felt the life being sucked out of him. "This just all feels very sudden."

Lily ran her fingers through her messy curls before shaking her head. "Thing's just aren't working out, okay? I'm going to have to focus on my work next year, and I can't let anything distract me." As she saw a tear run down Riven's cheek, Lily was crushed.

"I would never purposefully distract you from your work, love. I know how much you love the earth." Riven grabbed onto Lily's hands and pressed his lips to her knuckles.

Lily pulled her hands out of Riven's grasp and wiped away the single tear falling down her cheek. "I know you don't want to distract me, but just us being together is a distraction. You never leave my brain, Riv."

"But, I love you, baby." Lily's eyes widened after hearing Riven's words. He had never said that to her before. "I do. I always have. I know you love me too."

His hands cupped her cheeks, and Lily knew what she had to do. Her eyes drifted to the ground. "I can't right now."

The boy let out a whimper as he shook his head. "You don't mean that, Lil."

"I can't love you. I don't love you."

Riven moved backwards as her words hit him. He began to rub the back of his neck.  Lily couldn't look up at Riven. She couldn't see the pain on his face. She just simply shook her head.

"I'm sorry, Riv."
