02 - source of comfort
The next morning everyone was slowly going back to normal, talking more and the laughs that once filled the great hall had returned.
It was the day Selene was helping James with muggle studies. They were supposed to meet last night but given the daily prophet neither were in the mood.
Selene and Lily were sitting next to each other in transfiguration. Now just talking as they both successfully transfigured their ravens into goblets.
"I feel bad for you, Sel." Lily blurted
Selene nodded, "And why is that?"
"You have to spend time with Potter," Lily said putting on a look of disgust.
"He is not bad Lils."
"Says the one who hasn't had him constantly flirting with you for the past 6 years!"
Selene smirked, "True."
The bell rang which meant the end of transfiguration. The two girls walked out with their arms linked moving to the common room for their free period.
—
Selene and Lily approached the portrait of the fat lady. Lily muttered the password and the portrait hole swung open.
The two girls walked into the Gryffindor common room and sat down on the crimson fluffy couch to talk a little and start their potions homework.
"What are you doing tonight?" Lily asked.
"Well after dinner I'm meeting Potter at the black lake for an hour, and then I will be free the rest of the night," Selene answered while pulling out her potions book.
"Well, Marlene, Alice, and I are going to hang out in the dorm tonight and drink some butterbeer that Marlene got from Hogsmede. If you want to join?"
"Sounds fun, sure!"
Lily smiled and then proceeded to write on her parchment.
—
Selene was almost done with her paper for potions when the marauders decided to join them.
The portrait hole swung open to reveal, James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew
Selene always liked Remus the best out of the marauders. They first bonded in the second year when they found themselves in the library reading the same book 'Hogwarts A History' Both claiming it's a 'classic'.
Remus sat down next to Selene.
Sirius and Peter sitting on the floor next to the fireplace.
And finally, James sitting in one of the chairs next to Lily, "Ah my Lily Flower studying."
Lily momentarily looked up from her parchment to find James smirking at her. Lily huffed and put down her quill for a moment "What do you want, Potter?"
James gave her a sarcastic quizzical look "To go out with you, of course."
Lily rolled her eyes "I have told you no for the last six years. It will always be a no!"
Everyone looked up at Lily and James. Everyone was very used to James asking out Lily and her rejecting him.
This was different, Lily was normally semi-nice about it. Selene peered over at the bespectacled boy and noticed James' face fall. He looked almost sad about it.
He always returned to his smug smirk after getting rejected saying something along the lines of "At some point, you will say I do." or some stupid flirtatious remark.
Never looking sad.
A crestfallen James Potter quickly walked up the stairs to the boy's dormitory. Not saying anything or looking back. He was gone.
A few minutes of awkward silence passed between Lily, Selene, and the remaining marauders.
Selene had a bad habit of speaking up during moments of awkwardness, some would call it insensitive.
"Well, this is very awkward for all of us. Wizards chess anyone?"
They all gave her a blank stare. Though Selene thought she could detect a bit of amusement from Remus.
"What? Just trying to diffuse the tension. It's not like I'm going to go up and talk to him." Selene shrugged. They all shared a glance except for Lily who had disappeared.
"No."
"Come on you are friends with her! Give him some insight." Sirius bargained
"I barely know him! Peter, you do it."
Peter's face went red and he darted out of the common room.
"Seems it is up to you Ray," Sirius smirked
Selene groaned while getting up from the couch and walking up the stairs "You owe me, Black." She scoffed while opening up the door to the boy's dormitory.
She peered into the room to see James sitting on what appeared to be his bed. His face lay in his hands.
Selene frowned at the sight. She wasn't used to seeing James without a decent look on his face.
She sighed and made her way into the room and stood in front of James, "Hey."
James pulled his hands away from his face and looked up at Selene "What are you doing here?"
"Making sure you're okay."
He nodded looking up fully now but just staring out the window, "I just am getting tired of it all, she only ever says no. I did love her, I mean I do. but it's just getting old."
Selene nodded and quietly sat down next to James.
She started to put her arm around him but hesitated. Normally she wouldn't give it a second thought if the person upset was Lily or someone, but it felt different.
She was frozen in spot. Her hand just floating in the air. Selene closed her eyes for a second and fully wrapped her arm around his shoulder.
James slightly froze not expecting her to stay with him. But was glad she did.
-
A few hours had passed and Selene had left James after sitting their with him for a bit.
She was now in the great hall eating dinner with Lily, "why did you disappear?"
Lily looked over at Selene, "I felt bad."
Selene nodded about to say something else when she heard her name being called.
"SELLY SELLY!!" Marlene squealed while pulling Alice through the great hall.
"What?!" Selene asked looking slightly alarmed. Heads turned to see what was going on.
"Frank Longbottom just asked Alice to go to
Hogsmeade with him!!" Marlene was practically bouncing up and down there was a wide grin on her face.
Selene's face lit up mirroring the blondes grin, "You said yes right? I mean you would have had to you have liked him since 5th year!"
Alice grinned from ear to ear.
"Of course she said yes!" Marlene said while filling her plate with mashed potatoes.
"Awh! Alice, I'm so happy for you." Selene beamed. Alice and Frank had so obviously liked each other forever. It was a matter of time until they officially started to date. Nonetheless very exciting.
"Thank you, Sel." Alice could not stop smiling during dinner. It seemed she had found her person.
-
It was the next day, Selene was walking out to meet James for their tutoring session. The black lake was a bit of a hike from the castle so she was deep in thought.
Selene loved Hogwarts, everything about the castle, it was home.
She hoped to come back one day. Since she was eleven years old and she already knew she wanted to be a healer. That was the goal, Selene thought that perhaps it would be cool to be the school healer.
Apparently, she was very deep in thought because she had passed the tree she was meeting James under. She heard him yell to her that she had missed him.
She snapped out of the trance she was in. "So sorry!"
James chuckled at her running over to him "Someone deep in thought?" James asked sarcastically.
Selene nodded her head smirking "Oh yes. just thinking about everything."
James tilted his head "Like what?"
Selene's grin widened while thinking about teaching at Hogwarts as a job. "I love this place, I have always wanted to be a healer as a job. Maybe here if I could get in."
James matched her grin "Well when you become a healer here. You better let Remus, Sirius, Peter, and I into the castle to prank people. Can't let Hogwarts miss out on our fun activities for them!"
Selene scoffed "Fun activities? You have dangled Snape from the chandelier in the great hall. Not sure how you managed that. I don't even want to know."
James smirked "Glad to know we have an admirer."
That damn smirk.
"Don't smirk at me like that!"
"Like what?" James asked. His smirk only increased.
Selene ignored him and simply rolled her eyes as she sat down next to him, "Alright, Potter, let's get started on your work."
James pulled out a piece of parchment with nine questions on it. Selene took it from him and read the first one and looked up at him in disbelief.
Question one: "How does a screwdriver work?"
"You're joking." Her jaw dropped.
After working with James on what seemed like common sense questions. The work was finally finished. Selene sighed and started to pack up her bag.
"What are you doing?" James asked.
"Going back up to the castle?"
He nodded his head before saying "Alright Selly."
Selene stopped loading books back into her bag and look over to see James smirking, like always. "What did you just call me?" Selene asked. He knew that pissed her off. Marlene seemed to be the only human on earth that could call her by that name.
"You heard me... Selly."
And that is how James Potter got hexed.
AN: I love Selene so much.
What kind of hex did James get do we think?
