SERENA BERNARD was born in Mystic Falls, Virginia to Adam, a loving father, and Coralie Bernard, an alcoholic passively abusive mother. Her life was far from perfect but she had her Nana who just managed to make everything better. Then one day her father died in a car accident.

Things weren't the same after that. Coralie left Cassie and Serena to their Nana, pursuing her career as a news reporter elsewhere. Still, the Bernards persevered and life kept going.

Serena learned from a young age that she can't be the normal kid who makes mistakes, not when she needs to be the second and actual mother to her youngest sister and not when her Nana needed her to lean on.

She had her group of friends but she always felt left out, partially because she couldn't always be there with babysitting her sister or helping shop for groceries or studying to balance her time. Life was finally looking up when she felt something going on between her and Tyler Lockwood.

Then her Nana died. She became distant. She hated every part of her life and she felt like nothing could ever work again because how would it when Nana Izzie wasn't there anymore?

Charlotte Bernard, her ancestor ( who happened to be a vampire ) tried to make up for Nana Izzie's loss. She was always there for Serena and Cassie. The brunette actually started to depend on her but everything was shattered to pieces when Cassie died.

And it was all Charlotte Bernard's goddamn fault.
