Day 13: μέχρι τέλους
The vast beauty of Eden and its lush landscapes blended seamlessly with dreamlike hues. Shadow stood at the edge of the temple steps, gazing in the direction where everyone had seen the dazzling beam of light pierce the night sky. He felt a deep pull within him, as his instincts screamed that this was connected to Lita—there was no doubt about it. The mysterious outsider that the twins had mentioned also lingered in his thoughts.
There wasn't a moment more he would wait. Summoning the chaos energy that sparked through him like a raging river, he prepared to leave. The air around him shimmered, dark tendrils of red swirling at his fingertips, ready to catapult him into action. Just as he felt the surge building within, a familiar voice interrupted his focus.
"Hey, Shadow!" Sonic's voice rang out, breaking the tension in the air. He sprinted up the incline, his trademark grin as bright as ever, ignoring Shadow's scowl at the interruption. In his hands, he held the collection of Chaos Emeralds, their brilliant colors shimmering in the morning light.
Shadow turned, his brow furrowed. "What are you doing, Sonic? Don't try to stop me. I need to move."
"You will need more than one emerald to face that," Sonic said, the seriousness of the situation evident in his voice. He paused for a moment, looking off into the distance.
Shadow glanced at the Chaos Emeralds, wanting to ask Sonic if the emeralds had fallen along with him when he entered Eden.
Sonic rubbed the back of his quills shyly under Shadow's scrutinizing gaze. "Look, Amy convinced me not to leave. She read some mythology books about an adventurer who went on a quest to conquer another city. It took him long to return because the gods kept teasing him, leaving his wife and child behind to wait for him."
Shadow raised an eyebrow, a smirk creeping onto his face despite the urgency swirling in his chest. Also, how sickeningly sweet it was. "I never took you for someone who would stay in one place. When did you become so... noble?"
"Hey, it's about being responsible! I could ask you the same question," Sonic shot back, his playful demeanor wavering momentarily. "Look, you're eager to go, so take them." He thrust the emeralds forward, the energy radiating from them illuminating the marble and sandy ground beneath.
With a nod, Shadow accepted the emeralds, their power thrumming in his grip. He feels the chaotic energy within them intertwining with his own. "I'll be sure to bring back Knuckles and Lita."
"Good luck." Sonic's expression shifted to one of encouragement.
Without another word, Shadow launched himself into the air, the emeralds blazing with energy as they surged alongside him. Feeling the brisk wind against his face, a heady mix of adrenaline and purpose propelled him forward.
—
Lita stood still, her heart pounding as she surveyed the electroactive aftermath. Amés lay slumped against the well, his body twitching intermittently from the electric aftershock. Kneeling beside him, her breath steadied as she confirmed he was unconscious—his eyes tightly shut, breaths shallow.
A rush of mixed emotions swelled within her but it was quickly tempered by a gnawing unease. Defeating Amés had come far too easily. Had he underestimated her strength, or was he weaker than he had let on? The thought hovered in her mind as she pushed herself to her feet.
"Knuckles," She murmured, directing attention back to said echidna left in the cavern. Her footsteps echoed in the stillness as she walked back toward the cavern's entrance. The dim morning light flickered against the rough stone walls, casting long, eerie shadows that danced around as she reached the throne room.
Knuckles lay against the throne still unconscious. Bruises mottled his fur. Her heart ached at the thought of not having stopped Amés sooner from harming him.
Kneeling beside him, Lita carefully lifted him onto her back. His weight pressed down on her shame of not rescuing him on time, but her purpose now was strong. They had to get out of here. Just as she straightened up, preparing to make her escape, a sudden rustling echoed through the cavern, sending a jolt of panic racing through her.
Lita froze, senses screaming to be alert. The rustling grew louder, accompanied by an unsettling rustle of movement from the shadows. Her breath quickened as a thick cloud of black dust erupted from the cavern's exit, billowing out and engulfing her in darkness.
"Where do you think you're going, Lita?" Amés voice cut through the haze, smooth and taunting. He stepped out from the shadows, his silhouette barely discernible, but the glint of malice in his eyes was unmistakable.
"You think you can escape after shocking me?" His tone dripped with condescension. "Such a foolish act."
—
In a blur of red and black, Shadow skidded to a stop at the arched entrance of the Earth Realm, feeling a familiar rush of chaos energy briefly dissipate, sending a small shiver down his spine.
Just ahead, he knew he would find Lightning. Quickly regaining his focus, he dashed inside, keeping a close watch for any signs of Lightning's presence. The air crackled with energy, causing his quills to stand on end as he approached the abandoned Earth village. His attention was drawn to black dust above, which coiled ominously like a malevolent storm cloud.
As he hurried toward the source of the disturbance, he spotted a chilling scene from a rocky outcrop. Below, emerging from a cavern, with a twisted smile etched upon their face, recognizing the same fox that assisted Eggman, holding Lita aloft by her face. She wrestled against the suffocating black dust that surrounded her, her power flickering fiercely as she struggled to shield Knuckles, unconscious, cradled protectively against her side. The sight ignited anger within him.
With no time to waste, he activated Chaos Control, teleporting directly in front of Amés. The sudden appearance caught the villain off guard, allowing Shadow to deliver a powerful punch that sent Amés staggering backward. The impact reverberated through his arm, but the urgency of the moment propelled him forward; he needed to ensure that Lita and Knuckles were safe.
"Asterope!" he shouted, his voice cutting through the chaos around them. As Amés lost his grip on her, Lita instinctively twisted her body to shield Knuckles from the fall. Shadow's heart raced with relief as she hunched over Knuckles, using her body as a shield.
"Shadow?" Lita gasped, relief flooding her features even amidst the chaos. The black dust continued to swirl menacingly above them, but now that she saw Shadow, there was a glimmer of hope in her eyes.
"Are you okay?"He asked, kneeling beside her to assess her condition, mindful of the dust looming above them and the presence of Amés.
"I'm fine," she replied, her voice steadier than he expected. "But we need to get Knuckles out of here." Shifting her gaze to the unconscious echidna.
Frustrated grunts came from beside them as Amés arose, his expression shifting from surprise to anger. The dark energy swirling around him intensified as anger flashed in his eyes while he glared at Shadow. "You think you can just barge in here and disrupt my plans?" He sneered, brushing off the impact with a malevolent grin. "Oh, how cute," His voice dripped with sarcasm. "Lita needs her boyfriend to come to her rescue. What a lovely display of dependence."
Lita's glare pierced through the dust-filled air, her eyes blazing with anger. "I don't need your nonsense!"
Shadow could feel the heat of her fury but didn't take his focus off Amés. "Aster," He said, voice firm yet urgent, "Take Knuckles and run. I'm curious as to how this fox holds against the Chaos Emeralds."
"Wait!" She protested, her expression shifting to concern. "The Olympus Rule is designed to subdue any outsider power by half. It will harm you, Shadow. Please don't."
Shadow chuckled softly, finding Lita's concern somewhat endearing, even though she might be stronger than he was. "I'll take my chances," he replied, summoning the Chaos Emeralds to his side. Their vibrant colors swirled around him as the familiar hum of power enveloped him.
Lita's eyes widened in disbelief. "Shadow, this isn't a game! I don't know how it will affect you!"
"I know what I'm doing," He insisted, feeling the surge of chaos builds. He could feel himself anticipating for Amés to strike. With a glance, he gave Lita a grin. "Just trust me."
Amés, watching their exchange with amusement, tilted his head back, a mocking smile plastered across his face. "How touching," He taunted. "But let's see if your little power-up can withstand me."
Ignoring Amés's mockery, Lita turned to Knuckles, aware that he needed help and that their surroundings were no longer safe. "Alright, but we need to move quickly," she said, concern evident in her eyes. She carefully lifted Knuckles onto her back, prepared to follow Shadow's lead.
"Now go!" Shadow commanded, feeling the energy of the emeralds resonating. He could see Lita hesitating, worry etched across her face, but he knew this was the only way. "I'll hold him off. Just get to safety!"
With a nod, Lita took off, her heart racing as she sprinted away. Shadow turned to face Amés, the air around him crackling with chaotic energy, and black dust appeared to seep into his fur with every brush of that energy.
"Let's see how you handle this," He declared, channeling the energy from the Chaos Emeralds. As the light enveloped him, he felt his power surge, transforming into Super Shadow. His golden fur blazed brightly, pushing against the black dust that Amés wielded.
"Super," Amés sneered, his voice laced with condescension. "Let's see how long you can truly handle this." He raised his hands, the black dust swirling ominously, ready to unleash its wrath.
The stage was set for a fierce confrontation, and Shadow felt the thrill of battle coursing through himself.
—
Lita zipped across the Eden land, aware of the borders of the Eden Realms that would have been admired under different circumstances. Sadly, the beauty of the scene was lost on her as anxiety surged through her veins, urging her to run faster. She held Knuckles tightly against her back, whispering to herself, "We're almost there. Just a little further to my temple."
Her heart raced, each thud echoing in her ears as she sprinted, dodging trees and rocks with instinctive agility. The world around her blurred, the only focus being the Lightning temple that loomed ahead—a sanctuary where they could regroup with the others. As she approached, she felt the weight of her worry bearing down on her, but the thought of Knuckles's safety drove her onward.
In a final burst of speed, Lita slid into the temple, the smooth floor catching her off guard. She barely managed to maintain her grip on Knuckles. The sudden entrance startled the group gathered inside, who had barely enough time to react before diving and jumping away.
"What happened?" Rouge called, eyes wide with surprise as she glided to the ground, wings folding back.
Lita didn't answer; her mind was racing. With a sigh, she placed Knuckles and Rouge's arms, perplexing the bat with even more questions.
She hurried to an embroidered carpet on the wall, depicting ancient heroes and long-lost battles. Without hesitation, she pulled it down, the fabric giving way easily under her firm grip. The air crackled as she began to chant and incantation, the words flowing from her lips in a rhythmic echo that filled the temple.
A portal shimmered to life before Lita as she completed the chant, swirling with energy and light. The others gathered around, curious about what they were witnessing. Lita took a long, shaky breath, feeling her anxiety begin to lift as a sense of calm focus enveloped her. She turned back to the onlookers, who stared at her in confusion.
"You need to leave," She urged voice steadying as she regained her composure.
—
The landscape of the Earth Realm was nothing short of a warzone. Jagged rock cliffs jutted from the ground like broken teeth, and the air was thick with dust. Amés stood in the center, his eyes blazing with unrestrained rage. Around him, the earth trembled, cracks splitting open the ground as if the very land was rebelling under his will as the black dust infected the soil using chunks of rock against his opponent.
Standing opposite him, Shadow the Hedgehog exuded a quiet intensity, his crimson eyes sharp, unwavering. His stance was poised, calculating, as he looked down at the corrupted Earth Realm, the devastation spread by Amés lust for power clear in every fissure and gnarled root of the once-peaceful land. The black dust that Amés wielded surrounded the area like a fog of doom.
"You've made a grave mistake, Amés," Shadow said, his voice cutting through the charged atmosphere like a blade. "Eden has never wronged you. It's done nothing but provide for the Surface and yet, here you are, tearing apart the Earth Realm. For what? Power? Vengeance?"
Amés scoffed, his dark orange eyes narrowing as an ugly sneer crossed his face. He gripped his staff made of earth and stone tightly. "Do you think this is about power, Shadow? Do you believe it's some petty vendetta against a world that never appreciated my abilities?"
He stepped forward, and the ground trembled under his feet. Massive stone spires rose from the ground like claws reaching for the sky. "It's about justice, something you once knew long ago. I am Eden's rightful ruler and nothing—nothing will stop me from reshaping it as I see fit."
Shadow raised an eyebrow, his gaze hardening. However, his tone remained sharp and unwavering. "Justice? Don't make me laugh. You're using the land itself as a weapon, warping it with your so-called power. You've corrupted something you wouldn't even know how to control."
The ground beneath them cracked further, sending vibrations through the air as Amés raised his hands, summoning rock formations and stone pillars, directing them with a flick of his wrist. The earth roared as he spoke again, this time his voice tinged with venom.
"Justice," Amés repeated, his voice thick with bitterness, "Is for those who are worthy of it, not the self-righteous. Not people like Lita."
Shadow's eyes flashed, a subtle but noticeable shift in his expression as Amés words landed like a slap. Amés smirked at the flicker of emotion he saw in Shadow's stoic demeanor.
"Oh, what's this?" Amés taunted. "Did I strike a nerve? What does the Ultimate Lifeform know of justice, let alone understand why someone like Lita deserves any of it? She's one of them. One of those Holders. The so-called chosen ones who think they can control the element of everything—Eden, the Surface, the realms. They claim to be better, but they are no different from the rest of us, Shadow."
Shadow's fists clenched, his patience beginning to wear thin. But his words came out as he stepped forward to meet Amés' challenge head-on. "Aster isn't like you," He shot back, his voice hard, but unwavering. "She didn't choose this path. She doesn't revel in power the way you do. She's doing what she can to protect both Eden and the Surface—so her friends and family don't suffer."
Amés laughed, but it was hollow, empty—full of venom. "Family? Do you mean that adopted girl who killed her mother? Her death was no accident, Shadow. It was a consequence of her being one of them. And you're attracted to her?! How can someone like you, the Ultimate Lifeform, be so easily fooled by someone so—"
Amés didn't finish his sentence. With a sudden flare of movement, he thrust his hand downward, and the earth beneath Shadow cracked open, sending jagged stones hurtling toward him. Shadow reacted instantly, using Chaos Control to shift out of the way, teleporting several yards away, his eyes flashing dangerously.
"You're misunderstanding," Shadow said, his voice stripped of any trace of amusement. "You've twisted everything. As far as I know, Asterope has never suffered. She doesn't deserve your hatred, but your obsession is going to destroy you, just like it's destroying this realm."
Amés anger flared again, grinding his teeth. The black dust rose in swirls, engulfing the battlefield as he pointed his staff toward Shadow, dark energy crackling. "Destroy me? You don't even know what I'm capable of, Shadow. I will reshape Eden to my image, and make them all pay for the lies and betrayals they've inflicted on me. Lita will never escape this, and neither will you!"
Stone spikes erupted from the ground, aiming to impale Shadow. With his remarkable speed, Shadow dashed toward them, his body a blur, and in a flash, he delivered a Chaos Spear directly at Amés. The blast tore through the air, splitting the rocks apart and throwing Amés back with a grunt of frustration.
Amés staggered but stood tall, his eyes seething. "You're a fool, Shadow. You don't understand! They ruined everything. They—the Holders, the orders they followed. Do you think you and your friends are just going to waltz in and fix everything with your Chaos Energy? It doesn't work that way. You'll see."
Shadow's eyes narrowed, his body crackling with Chaos Control as the air around them swirled with energy. "I'm not here to fix your mess, Amés. I'm here to stop you."
A massive rock fist rose from the ground to crush Shadow, but he was ready. In an instant, Shadow disappeared, reappearing in front of Amés with a Chaos Blast that sent shockwaves through the landscape. The blast hit Amés directly, but he only grunted, stumbling back as the black dust seemed to fade.
Amés glared up at Shadow with a burning hatred. "You think you've won, don't you? It's too late now. I've already made my decision."
"You're not invincible," Shadow said coldly. "And you've already lost."
With that, Shadow summoned a final Chaos Spear, one that tore through the air like a comet. As the spear flew toward Amés, the earth itself seemed to shift, groan, and quake—Amés' final attempt to twist the very ground beneath them. But it was too late. The spear collided, and the impact caused a massive shockwave, tearing apart the stone around them.
—
Lita paced back and forth, muttering under her breath as she analyzed her surroundings. She communicated with her assistants in a language that neither Sonic nor his other friends could understand, except for the Earth twins, who stood off to the side watching as she ensured that everything was packed away.
Her lightning powers crackled in the air as she struggled to contain her frustration and anxiety, knowing that her declaration for everyone to leave was rather sudden.
"Lightning?" Sonic called out, his voice tinged with concern. "Where's Shadow? Was he there with you?"
Lita stopped and turned to him, a deep sadness in her eyes. Her voice cracked slightly—the weight of that reality hanging heavily on her shoulders. "Amés has seized control of the Earth Realm. Shadow managed to give me enough time to escape with Knuckles"
Sonic's eyes narrowed, his usual bravado faltering for a split second. "That's what this is about, then? Amés?"
Lita nodded solemnly. "He's no longer just a threat to Eden. He's also a threat to the Surface and if you stay here much longer..." Her words trailed off as she glanced back at the crackling sky, where she could feel the ominous energy lingering, a remnant of the chaos Amés had unleashed.
Rouge, who had been quietly observing, spoke up as she adjusted Knuckles's unconscious form in her arms. "If we're leaving, then we don't have much time. You look like you're ready to collapse, Lightning. What's going on?"
Lita sighed deeply, her eyes scanning the faces of her friends—her family, in a sense. Each of them had come willingly to Eden, but now their safety was her responsibility, and it was clear the threat was greater than she had anticipated.
"Eden is no longer safe," Lita said, tone firming up as she faced Rouge, her gaze growing resolute. "I came here to warn you all. Amés plans to turn Eden into ruins. The land is tainted, Eden itself poisoned by his rage. The black dust... it's not just a weapon; it's a disease. It corrupts everything it touches."
Espio stepped forward, his eyes narrowing as he processed the gravity of her words. "We can't stay here, then. I've seen it. The danger is too great for all of us."
Amy, ever compassionate, already moving to Lita's side, her hand resting gently on her arm. "But we can't just leave. What about Shadow?"
Lita took a slow breath, looking at each of them in turn. Her gaze lingered on Sonic, who stood closest to her, his usual confident smirk nowhere in sight. She knew he wanted answers. And she knew she had to give them.
"Shadow's handling Amés," Lita said firmly, her voice steady despite the storm inside her. "I know he can. But it's not a battle I can unfortunately win right now. I won't stand by and let him destroy everything, but for now, this is beyond me."
Cream clutched her hands nervously, her usual cheerfulness clouded by the tension in the air. "But what about us? Where do we go?"
"Back to the Surface," Lita replied, her expression hardening as she set her gaze on Sonic. "The only safe place. You need to go now before it's too late. Amés will be looking and Eden is no longer safe."
Sonic, the ever-determined leader, nodded as he stepped forward, though there was no mistaking the concern that had replaced his typical cocky grin. "We'll make it to the Surface, then. But what about you, Lita?"
Lita clenched her fists. She hadn't fully admitted it to herself yet, but the truth was clear now: she could not protect them all at once, so one must go. "I'll be fine. I need to be here. Eden is my responsibility, but I've already failed to stop Amés from taking over one of the realms."
Sonic's brow furrowed, the concern still visible in his eyes. "You haven't failed, Lightning. You're still standing. You'll figure this out."
Lita smiled faintly, the weight of the world still pressing down on her. "I hope so, Sonic. But for now, you need to leave." She nodded toward Rouge, who was already looking ready to head out.
Rouge, always the pragmatist, gave a nod of her own. "We don't need to be told twice. Let's get out of here."
Amy, always the optimist, gave a little smile. "We'll get through this. We always do."
"We will ensure their safe guidance, Aster; you need not worry," Astygites said as he and his sister nodded. Earning a solemn smile from Lita.
With a final glance back at the landscape of Eden, Lita took a breath and turned toward the portal that would take her friends back home. She and Shadow would finish this. As the group prepared to leave, Lita's thoughts were consumed by Amés' threats, the corruption of the Earth Realm.
Her eyes lingered on the portal, just for a moment more, before a sudden, sharp gust of wind howled through the temple. The shadows cast by the pillars flickered, and the air grew thick, crackling with a strange energy.
Then—A clash.
A burst of gold and black sky emanated from the Earth Realm in the distance. It was a brilliant flash, blinding in its intensity, followed by the deep, ominous sound of something ripping.
A low rumble echoed across the land, as though Eden itself was trying to tell her something, but it was lost just as it came. She turned back to her friends, gathered behind her. Her anxiety rose once more and without hesitation or even a goodbye, she bolted off back to the Earth Realm.
—
The battle had escalated quickly: a clash of power and will, where the very forces that bound reality seemed to bend and twist around them.
Shadow, his crimson eyes filled with fury, was the first to strike. He conquered his Chaos Energy, and a golden aura surrounded him, transforming him into Super Shadow in a burst of ethereal power. The ground beneath him cracked as he leaped forward, leaving a trail of gold in his wake.
Yet Amés was prepared. The sleek, ashen blonde-furred fox, with eyes glowing like molten obsidian, moved with inhuman grace. A whirlwind of black dust swirled around him, a dark, ethereal fog that shimmered with a malignant, almost sentient force. His eyes locked onto Shadow's every move, and without a word, he raised his hand.
The black dust whipped through the air, swirling like a living storm. It engulfed Shadow, disintegrating the very air around him. The Chaos Control that typically defied the laws of reality itself began to bend under the pressure of the sinister, corrupting power.
Shadow gritted his teeth as the dust struck him. It felt like tiny, invisible blades gnawing at the edges of his being, threatening to tear through his very form. He clenched his fists, his Chaos Emerald glowing brighter, trying to force his power through the oppressive weight of the black dust.
As he pushed back, a strange, oppressive force crawled over his senses. It was like an invisible hand was squeezing his soul, draining his strength. Shadow's head throbbed, and his vision blurred momentarily as the Olympus Rule, the mysterious force governing this sacred land, tightened its grip. His power was being halved.
'Damn it', Shadow thought, his teeth grinding. ' I can't let this slow me down.'
With renewed willpower, Shadow willed himself into the air, his form enveloped in a swirling mass of chaotic energy. He wasn't going to let this... this Olympus Rule defeat him. Not now.
Even as he shot upward, the black dust followed. It swirled around him, faster than he could react, and in the blink of an eye, a thick cloud engulfed him again. Shadow grimaced as the dust began to eat away at his form, and for the first time in a long while, he felt... vulnerable.
Amés grinned, his black eyes glinting with malice as he looked up at Shadow's strained form.
"You can feel it, can't you?" Amés taunted, his voice calm yet dripping with cruel satisfaction. "This place... it's not your world, Shadow the Hedgehog. You're nothing here but an outsider."
With a flick of his tail, the fox summoned another burst of black dust, sending it spiraling toward Shadow in a dense, inescapable wave. It was as though the very air had turned against him.
Shadow winced as he felt the full force of the attack approaching. But before it could consume him, the ground rumbled beneath his feet.
Lita appeared in a flash of blue and white, her presence electrifying. With a lightning staff in hand, she zipped between them, skidding to a stop and kicking up dirt that seemed to magnetize with the iron in the soil.
Amés, clearly furious about her return, swung his tail in a wide arc, sending another wave of black dust spiraling outward. Shadow barely managed to dodge it, but Lita wasn't fast enough. Just as Amés prepared to unleash a devastating blast of concentrated black dust toward Shadow, the tension in the air intensified.
"Enough!" Lita shouted, raising her lightning staff. But it was too late.
The black mist surged forward like a living entity, streaking across the battlefield with deadly precision. Shadow dodged, his form flickering as he used Chaos Control to evade the worst of it, but Lita was directly in its path.
Before she could react, the black dust hit her full force. The grit of the sand shaved into her armor, sending searing pain through her side as it began to sand the material, gnawing at the edges of her protective gear like a thousand tiny, hungry blades. Lita gasped, stumbling back as the sharp sting of the attack overwhelmed her.
"Aster!" Shadow yelled, his voice laced with urgency, but she was already moving.
Her hands crackled with electricity, the familiar lightning pulse igniting as she summoned her power. The air around her vibrated with intensity, and a storm of crackling energy surged up from her feet, enveloping her like a living barrier.
"Hoplon Shield!" Lita shouted, her voice unwavering despite the pain. In an instant, a thick arc of electricity exploded outward, creating a radiant shield of lightning energy around her and Shadow. The storm of electricity pulsed with an almost blinding intensity as it surged through the air, disintegrating the black dust that had begun to surround them.
Amés's dark dust fizzled and sputtered upon contact with the electric shield. Despite her defenses, Lita felt the strain of the immense energy needed to protect herself and Shadow. The wound on her side continued to burn painfully. The faint smell of scorched flesh mingled with the ozone scent that emanated from her lightning.
Amés growled, his eyes narrowing as the dust around him whipped into a frenzy. "This puny shield won't do anything!" He sneered, his voice dark and dripping with malice.
The fox twisted his hand, and more black dust surged forward, lashing out at the Lightning Holder with terrifying force. Lita's shield flickered under the assault, sparks flying as the dust scratched and clawed at her lightning armor.
Shadow, his body glowing with the fading power of Chaos, grimaced. He could feel the oppressive pressure weighing heavily on him, but his focus never wavered. Seeing Lita struggle to maintain the barrier, his mind raced.
"Aster, hold on!" Shadow called, his voice steady despite the growing threat. His emerald eyes burned with determination. He knew he had to help—he couldn't afford to let her take the brunt of this attack.
Lita's face contorted with pain, but her gaze never left Amés. "I can hold it... just... don't let him get the upper hand, Shadow."
The energy from her shield flickered again, and for a brief moment, Lita's hand trembled. The black dust was gnawing at her, trying to break through. The wound along her side irritated with every movement.
Amés cackled, pushing forward, his eyes gleaming with malice. "You think your little lightning tricks will protect you? I'll turn you both into nothing but dust!"
In a sharp motion, he summoned more dust, flooding the air in a mass of swirling blackness. This time, it was different—this was a concentrated attack designed to overwhelm, not just scatter.
Lita's resolve was unshakable. "I'm not giving up yet!" she spat, her teeth clenched.
As the dark wave of dust surged toward them, Lita summoned all her remaining strength. She channeled every last ounce of her lightning power into her shield. The crackling storm of electricity erupted in all directions, surging through the air with explosive intensity.
For a moment, everything seemed to freeze. The dust met the lightning. The earth shuddered beneath them.
Then, they collided in brilliant sparks of light. Amés's dust was shattered in the explosion, disintegrating before it could reach them. The shockwave rippled through the air, and a wave of energy knocked back all three.
Lita groaned as she landed hard, the injured side of her body throbbing with pain. Her armor was nearly destroyed, the cut beneath it deep, but she forced herself to stand, though unsteady. Her hands were still sparking with remnants of the lightning shield, crackling faintly in the aftermath.
Shadow, although weakened, quickly got up beside her. His eyes were filled with concern and gratitude.
"That was too close," He said, his voice gruff but tinged with appreciation.
Lita gave him a strained smile, her breath still ragged. "We can't let him win."
"You think you can survive that?!" Amés roared, his voice dripping with fury. "You're still breathing!" His black dust crackled with menace as he advanced, his anger boiling over. "I'll make sure you don't get back up this time."
Lita, gritted her teeth against the sharp pain in her side, her fingers crackling with faint lightning as she drew on what little energy she had left. She wasn't finished yet—not by a long shot.
"You're not getting rid of me that easily, Amés," Lita spat, her voice low but fierce. The blood that stained her side seemed to fuel her determination as she locked eyes with him.
Amés sneered, his expression twisted with contempt. "You think you can drag me anywhere? You are weak, Lita—barely a fraction of your potential. Eden will be your grave."
Lita's jaw tightened. "We'll see about that."
Shadow slowly rose to his feet beside her, the weight of their situation pressing on him. He turned his red eyes toward Amés, then glanced at Lita, seeing the determination in her expression.
"You don't have to do this alone, Aster," Shadow said, his voice gruff. "I can help you take him down. Even with this rule weakening my Chaos abilities, I can still—"
Lita's gaze shot to him, fierce and resolute. "No," she said firmly, her voice slicing through the air. "I'll be alright. You've done enough. Just get back to the temple and wait with the others."
Shadow hesitated, his mind racing. He wanted to argue—wanted to help her. But deep down, he knew she was right. Her elemental powers were at full strength, and he was already drained by the effects of the Olympus Rule. She had the upper hand now, and she wasn't asking him to stay for safety; she was giving him a command.
"Aster," Shadow said, finally stepping back, his voice tinged with reluctant respect. His red eyes locked onto her with a silent promise: Don't do anything reckless.
Lita nodded, her body tense as she turned her attention back to Amés. His eyes blazed with fury as he watched them, but Lita wasn't afraid. Though she was injured, she wasn't about to let him destroy everything she had vowed to protect.
She straightened up, pushing through the pain as her body crackled with raw energy from her lightning. Locking eyes with Amés, she curled her lips into a sly grin and raised her voice just loud enough for him to hear.
"Not so tough now, are we, Amés?" Lita taunted, her voice laced with mocking amusement. "All that power and you can't even finish off a little girl ?"
Amés fists clenched, his fury reaching its boiling point. "You'll regret those words, you runt! You can't run from me forever!"
Lita didn't flinch. Her smirk widened.
"Why don't you try and catch me?" She called, her voice dripping with challenge. With that, she blurred into motion, her body a brilliant blue and white streak as she zipped upward into the sky.
Amés roared, his black dust swirling violently as he shot after her, but Lita was already far ahead, her lightning-powered speed nearly matching the storm clouds coming in with reflected sparks. The cliffside, the border of Eden, was just beyond. Exactly where she needed to go.
Shadow watched as both disappeared into the distance, his chest tight with conflicting emotions. He knew she was more than capable, but a part of him couldn't shake the worry.
—
A streak of blue-white. Lita's body pulsed with light, surrounded by a constant hum of crackling lightning as she hovered high in the air.
Amé's orange eyes blazed with anger as he hovered before her. His fur rippled, darkened by the swirling black dust that enveloped him. He stood at the ready, his claws extended, while a vortex of black dust swirled around him.
"Running, little girl?" Amés sneered, his voice smooth but venomous. His tail lashed behind him as he watched Lita's every move, prepared to strike. "You can't hide from me in the air. I'll make sure you're nothing but ash."
Lita's eyes gleamed, but she wasn't intimidated. She raised one arm, her fingers crackling with electricity as she reached out to the sky. The air around her twisted as she pulled the lightning from the heavens, drawing it to her. A jagged, blue-white bolt crackled with an electric hum.
"You're not the only one who can control an Element, Amés, much less one that is true," Lita called, her voice echoing with the sound of thunder. She twisted her wrist, the lightning arcing around her in a sharp, crackling whip.
The whip of lightning lashed through the air, slicing through the dark clouds with a thunderous crack. The sharp end of the whip cracked through the atmosphere, striking the ground far below, and causing the land to tremble.
Amés barely managed to twist his body out of the way. The lightning missed him by inches, but it sizzled through the air and melted the rocks below into slag.
"You think a little trick can stop me?" Amés growled, his voice now thick with contempt. His eyes narrowed, and with a snap of his claws, a massive wave of black dust surged toward Lita, forming a suffocating cloud that spiraled violently toward her.
Yet Lita was already on the move.
With a snap of her fingers, the whip of lightning transformed into a staff. She twirled it in her hands, watching its length extend, allowing her to shape it as she wished. She twisted the middle, creating two dual blades: white and blue. As a dust storm surged toward her, she parried it with a swirling motion, and the blades absorbed the brunt of the attack.
Amés roared in frustration as his dust failed to break through her defense. He could feel the weight of the storm, but his power didn't seem to be enough to overpower her.
"You're quick, I'll give you that," Amés growled, voice dripping with frustration as he barely avoided another deadly slash from Lita's blades. "But you can't keep running forever."
Lita's eyes sparkled with mischief, and a playful smirk curved her lips. "You'll have to catch me first, Uncle," she teased, her voice light and playful, even as her body crackled with electricity and her quills flared slightly. She was in her element now—every fiber of her being one with lightning, every muscle propelling her body beyond the limits of normal speed and agility.
She twirled in the air, her dual blades clutched tightly in her hands. She slashed across the space between them, delivering a series of strikes in rapid succession—left, right, up, down—each hit precise and relentless.
Amés was forced to dodge again, his eyes flickering with anger as he felt the zing of electricity touch the tips of his fur. But he wasn't going to let her keep the upper hand for long. He gathered himself, his tail flicking with growing malice as he launched himself forward with an explosive burst of speed, aiming to catch her in a deadly sweep.
Lita spun away.
She soared like a comet through the air, leaving a trail of blue and white behind her. Mid-flight, she twisted her body and, with a sharp motion, reformed her blades into one massive, jagged spear—aimed directly at him.
The spear shot forward with a thunderous boom. It was so fast that for a moment, it seemed like it might land a devastating blow to Amés.
At the last second, Amés twisted mid-air, barely evading the strike as the spear burned through the air where he had been just a moment ago. He let out a low growl of frustration, his fur singed in spots where the attack had grazed him.
"You're a quick one, aren't you?" He hissed, eyes narrowing. "But you're still just a little girl who doesn't understand her place."
Lita's heart skipped a beat at his words, her eyes flashing with annoyance. "You're unwanted here Amés."
She sprang back into action, spinning through the air as she transformed her staff into dual blades. With a series of rapid, devastating strikes aimed at Amés head and torso, she unleashed a relentless combo. Left, right, diagonal—each movement was sharp and unforgiving.
Amés growled in frustration, swiping with his claws, narrowly missing her as she darted in and out of his reach. He wasn't used to this. He was used to breaking his enemies, overpowering them with sheer force. But Lita? She was relentless.
She was wearing him down.
In a final, powerful strike, Lita lashed out—blades whistling through the air with all the energy she could muster.
As the blades neared Amés, he grinned, with a knowing gleam in his eyes.
"Do you think you're fighting me for the right reasons, Lita?" He taunted, his voice turning low and cruel, every word calculated to cut deep. "Your mother—she wanted you gone, you know. She abandoned you. Never coming after you, never even trying to see you again. Do you think she cared?"
Lita froze mid-motion, her blades slowing as Amés words pierced her like a second wound. The air around her seemed to still for a heartbeat as her body locked in place, the electric crackle dying down for a moment.
"No..." Her voice was a whisper, barely audible. "That's not true..."
Amés grin widened, satisfaction gleaming in his eyes having found a soft spot. "Is it not? Don't you ever wonder why she never came for you? What does that say about her?"
His words cut deeper than any physical strike Lita could remember receiving. They were sharp, cruel reminders of Lita's loneliness growing up. The void left by the separation. But she couldn't let Amés get to her.
" You're wrong," Lita spat, voice trembling. "She did care. I remember she did."
Amés tilted his head, a mocking look in his orange eyes. " Did she ?"
Before Lita could respond and brace herself for what was next, Amés lunged, taking the opportunity while her guard was down. His claws shot out like daggers, grabbing her by the throat.
Lita's heart raced as she felt his fingers tighten around her neck, cutting off her breath as his claws dug into her skin. He grinned, his hot breath against her face as he clutched her tightly, his strength overwhelming.
"You may have been granted a place by the Heralds where I should be," Amés hissed, "but you're still nothing to me."
The black dust surrounding him thickened, enveloping her body and choking her as he hovered toward the cliffside. The dust coiled around her like shackles, and she gasped for air, her body straining as she fought against his grip, kicking and clawing at his hands.
Amés voice was a venomous whisper, his taunt lingering in the air. "Let's see if your gifted abilities can save you now."
In one swift motion, he threw her backward. The world blurred as she soared through the air, the edge of Eden racing toward her.
Plummeting toward the ground like a meteor, the air rushing past her, her electric glow flickering faintly as she fell helplessly toward the rocky water below.
Amés looked down with satisfaction as he watched her fall, convinced that the battle was won. He paused to savor this moment of victory, eagerly awaiting the sound of her hitting the rocks and the splash of water below, reminiscent of long ago.
Descending to the ground he savored his moment of victory, a sharp crack of energy tore through the air.
Before he could react, Amés head snapped back, as a bright light whooshed by his ear. "What — ?" Amés spun around in surprise.
From the corner of his eye, he saw Shadow—his form a blur of red and black racing across the rocky terrain. The Chaos Spear had been a distraction, a brief opening, and it worked.
Shadow shot forward, his eyes locked onto Lita as she continued to fall. "Aster!" he shouted, his voice barely audible over the howling wind.
He was close—so close. But Amés was not about to let them escape so easily. In a fit of frustration, he raised his hand and clenched his fist. The black dust swirled violently around him, and with a snap of his fingers, it morphed into jagged stones—sharp and menacing. The rocks shot toward Shadow like projectiles, slicing through the air with vicious speed.
Shadow dodged the first few, but the sharp rocks grazed the edges of his quills, leaving deep gouges in his fur and skin. His concentration flickered for just a moment.
In that instant, he saw Lita disappear beneath the waves, her body swallowed up by the dark ocean.
"No—!" Shadow's voice was a snarl of frustration. He accelerated, diving toward the water without hesitation, his focus entirely on saving her.
The ocean roared as he plunged into the dark abyss, his body cutting through the surface like a blade. The cold hit him like a shock, but he barely felt it—Lita was what mattered now.
He plunged deeper, chaos energy pulsing as he scanned the murky depths for her. The water was thick and oppressive, the ocean's pull trying to drag him under.
Time lingered as he swam through the water, his heart pounding in his chest, breath coming in short bursts. His sharp eyes scanned the murky darkness. Then, he saw her.
Lita's glowing form was faint, flickering as it bobbed beneath the surface. She had gone under; the exhaustion from the fight must have taken its toll on her.
Shadow propelled himself with his shoes, reaching out with both hands as his fingers brushed against her skin. The look she gave him was one he would never forget. He grabbed her waist, lifting her as he wrapped his arms around her to pull her toward the surface.
Gasping for air, Shadow shot upward, breaking through the water's surface in a burst of energy. He hauled Lita up, the blue-white glow of her lightning barely flickering.
As he glided across the water, his speed propelled them both toward the sloping shoreline beneath the cliff. In a powerful surge, Shadow reached the shore, protected by a barrier of large rocks. The storm above began to recede into the background as the waves crashed in front of him. He knelt on the sand, breathing heavily.
–
Amés watched with narrowed eyes, his gaze fixed on the pair. He clenched his fist in irritation as the black dust swirled around him in fury.
He glanced at the churning ocean, narrowing his eyes. The Olympus Rule might affect Shadow's power, but the hedgehog wasn't without his advantages. And Lita? She was merely a child in a god's world.
He turned away no longer seeking interest in soon-to-be-watered bodies, his tail flicking behind him as he walked off.
–
After a tense moment, Lita's breath ragged as she coughed up seawater.
"Aster!" Shadow's voice was sharp with concern as he checked her for any injuries, relieved to find she was okay.
Lita looked up at him, blinking away the salty water from her eyes. Momentarily disoriented, she recognized his face, his lips curling into a faint smile.
"Shadow?" Her voice was barely a whisper.
"You're okay," Shadow said softly. Relief flooded through him, letting the tension in his muscles finally ease.
Lita turned her head and saw the silhouette of a black hedgehog standing next to her, his quills still dripping with seawater. He knelt beside her, his sharp eyes filled with a familiar stoic intensity, though the slightest flicker of relief softened the tightness in his jaw.
"Thank you," Lita said softly, her voice still slightly rough from swallowing seawater, but her gratitude was genuine. She shifted, propping herself up into a seated position. Her hands trembled for a moment, but she managed to steady herself. Taking a deep breath, she looked up at him again. "I... I would have drowned if you hadn't saved me."
Shadow didn't immediately respond, his gaze unwavering, but the corner of his lips barely twitched.
Lita narrowed her eyes playfully, a small smirk tugging at the corners of her lips, despite her exhaustion. "But wait," she continued, her voice teasing but tinged with concern. "Didn't I tell you to go to the temple and wait?" She raised an eyebrow as she observed Shadow's reaction.
Shadow didn't flinch, but his eyes narrowed slightly as he met her gaze. "I do what I think is best." His words reflected his usual unwavering nature, though there was a faint hint of warmth in his response.
Lita chuckled weakly, the motion causing a slight tightness in her chest. Still, it felt good to laugh after the intensity of the fight. "Well, I guess I'm glad you didn't listen to me. But still," she added, her tone shifting back to a more serious note, "I told you to wait. Amés is dangerous; you've seen that, Shadow. You could have—"
"Could've what?" Shadow interrupted, locking his gaze on hers. "Let you die?" There was an intensity in his eyes that cut through the air, the chaos energy still crackling faintly around him. Despite his usual demeanor, the concern on his face was unmistakable. "I'm not leaving you behind."
Lita stared at him for a long moment, the sincerity in his words sinking in. The tension of the fight had worn her down. His presence felt like an anchor in this chaotic arc.
"I... I'm... You," she instead laughed and shook her head.
Shadow didn't respond right away. Instead, he let his gaze drift toward the distant cliffs, his expression unreadable. The wind ruffled his quills as the waves continued to crash against the rocks.
"Amés is still out there," he said, his tone shifting back to the more serious, battle-ready edge Lita knew all too well. "We can't afford to waste time."
Lita nodded and sat up, brushing the sand from her fur and quills. She felt the sting of her earlier injuries; her side ached where Amés black dust had cut into her. However, she ignored the pain and focused on the task at hand.
"I didn't intend to waste time. I just... Why is he so obsessed with being here?" She gazed out at the ocean, her mind racing with questions and memories of her uncle's cryptic words. "I don't know if I'm strong enough to stop him. I got Knuckles hurt."
Shadow didn't look at her, instead looked out amongst the ocean. He could sense the doubt in her voice. "You are strong," he said firmly. "You were granted the power of Lightning. Having power doesn't mean it has to be a bad thing unless you choose to use it that way. You're more than capable. But we need to be strategic." Finally, he turned to meet her gaze again, his eyes bright. "We'll figure it out together."
Lita met his gaze, feeling a surge of gratitude mixed with a hint of apprehension. She couldn't explain why, but having Shadow by her side—having him believe in her—made her feel a little less alone in this fight.
A pause settled between them as they both stared out at the horizon. The wind howled, the storm still crackling with unspent energy, but it seemed less ominous now as if they had weathered the worst of it.
"Alright," Lita said after a moment, standing taller despite the pain in her body. "Let's find that outsider."
Shadow nodded, his sharp eyes scanning the cliff for a path to the top. He had one Chaos Emerald, which would allow him to teleport above, but in a place where a literal rule restricted his powers, he didn't want to risk flying only to fall back down.
Lita seemed to hold the key to their next move. She stepped back, closed her eyes, and slowed her breathing to focus. With her hands together in front of her chest, her fingertips gently pressed against each other, an electric aura flickered around her, brimming with renewed energy. A low hum began to resonate from her body as she channeled the lightning that had accumulated both above and within her.
Shadow took a cautious step back when a spark flew a little too close for his comfort. The energy within her began to stretch outward, reaching up into the stormy sky above, searching for the current that ran through the air and the atmosphere.
In a focused motion, she raised her arms upwards, her hands glowing with an electric pulse as she summoned the lightning to her will. The air crackled and hummed with power as the clouds above seemed to part slightly, revealing the connection between the sky and Eden.
"Show me the splintered one," Lita murmured, her voice barely more than a whisper as she stretched the flow of lightning outward, searching for the distinct signature of Amés energy.
For a few seconds, the only sound was distant thunder rumbling through the clouds. Then, feeling like a static flicker, she sensed the spark she had been searching for.
Thunder rolled in response, lending its sound toward a distant mountain range to the west. She could feel the surge of Amés' presence.
"The Lightning Temple," she muttered, her expression hardening as she sensed Amés's location. "He's heading to the Lightning Temple. I opened a portal to let our friends escape to the Surface. If Amés reaches that portal, he could easily destroy the Surface, just as he did with the Earth Realm here. He might even try to merge Eden with the Surface."
Shadow's eyes narrowed at the urgency of the situation. "What will happen if he merges Eden with the Surface?"
Lita shook her head and closed her eyes, a brief grimace crossing her face. "This would mean that Eden will attempt to expand wherever it can on the Surface, leading to widespread land disruption and loss of life both on the Surface and here."
Shadow opened his mouth to speak but couldn't find the words. Instead, he resorted to holding one of her hands with a firm grip. "I'll be right beside you."
Lita didn't need to be told twice. She gripped his hand tightly and nodded. Her electric aura flared up, encasing them both as the wind whipped around them.
"He will have nowhere to hide in such a confined space," she declared. They glowed with a brilliant blue-white electric aura. In the next moment, they became a blur of light, and the sand burst away, leaving a dent as they zipped to the top of the cliff.
Together, they reached the rocky summit, linking their arms as they raced toward their target granted by the rumbling thunder. They didn't speak; there was no time for words.
Neither glanced, but both wished to express one thing. The urgency of the situation demanded their full attention, so it seemed they would each have to wait for a more appropriate moment.
The world around them blurred as they reached halfway to the Lightning Temple, where the faint hint of light of the portal showed to still be open.
Then, in the distance, Lita spotted him—Amés—his silhouette riding on a cloud of black dust, gliding effortlessly toward the temple. The swirling black dust around him seemed to move in harmony with his actions, each step radiating power.
Lita's heart raced, and her legs ached as she realized how close he was to reaching the Surface. If Amés were to succeed, she would surely feel as though she had betrayed her vows as a Holder of Eden.
"We are getting close," Shadow said, his voice pulling Lita from her thoughts. "We need to make our move now."
Lita glanced forward once, then back, before giving a sharp nod. Her free hand sparked as she gritted her teeth. "We'll stop him. Here and now."
As they drew closer, Lita raised her hand high, forming a javelin of lightning. When Amés came into view, Lita positioned the javelin along her arm, adjusting its point between her fingers. She then raised it to aim directly at Amés before flexing her palm and releasing it.
It seems that lady luck would not be on their side, as their previous battle appears unchanged.
Amés, sensing the impending attack, quickly spun around, surrounding himself with a shield of black dust that deflected the javelin. Lita gritted her teeth, feeling the tension in her shoulder.
"He knows we're coming now. We'll need to attack from different points to beat him."
Unlinking their arms, Lita dashed to the side, attempting to get behind Amés, while Shadow moved forward to direct Amés for her attack.
Shadow accelerated, trying to harness Chaos Energy again, racing toward Amés with the Chaos Spear. Occasionally, he glanced in the direction where Lita had gone.
The moment Amés and his eyes met, Shadow hurled Chaos Spears, the attack cutting through the air with a blinding crack of force. Amés swatted it away effortlessly, orange eyes glowing with annoyance.
"I should have drowned you myself!" Amés shouted as he raised his hand to unleash black dust upon Shadow.
Shadow smirked, giving a smug look. "Perhaps you would have succeeded had you gone after me and not turned your back."
In an instant, Lita appeared with a flash of blue and white, summoning her dual blades. The electric blades crackled as she charged forward, keeping pace with Shadow as they rushed toward Amés together. With her blades poised to strike, Lita braced herself for the final confrontation.
"You can't run Amés!" Lita shouted, eyes gleaming.
The air crackled with tension as Lita and Shadow approached Amés, the storm above them intensifying with each passing moment. The skies darkened, and the atmosphere grew charged with the potential for devastation.
"Such pathetic children playing heroes."
Amés used the movement of his tail to create a cloud of black dust that obscured the views of both opponents. As he spun into the air, his body became enveloped by the swirling black dust. He taunted them with a mocking growl.
"Do you think you can stop me?" he scoffed. "You're just children pretending to be heroes in a dead world. You'll never defeat me."
Amés unleashed a barrage of black dust, shaping it into sickles with a flick of his wrist. Along with the dust, he picked up jagged stones from the ground and hurled them at the two below. Shadow reacted quickly, dodging the attack and countering with his Chaos Control, ignoring the Olympus Rule, which still influenced his powers. He felt the weight of this restriction every time he attempted to launch a full-force attack.
At the same time, Lita zipped around Amés, maintaining a blur of movement as she tried to counter his sickled attacks. She wouldn't admit it openly, but the adrenaline coursing through her made her legs tremble, and she could feel the heat of her blades in her grip—an intensity she hadn't experienced since she first learned to harness her granted power.
It might have been because she turned her gaze away, or perhaps her ankle sprained as she jumped after slipping on an unseen stone in the grassy ground. It all happened without her noticing.
With a violent swipe of his hand, Amés conjured black dust that spiraled into a whip-like tendril. He caught Shadow off-guard, slamming the hedgehog and sending him sliding across the rocky ground with a sickening crack.
" Shadow! " Lita screamed, feeling her heart fall into her stomach.
Shadow staggered to his feet, drained of energy from the impact, as the Olympus Rule once again took its toll. Amés sneered down at him, descending to take a closer look as if savoring the moment.
Lita's eyes flared with fury as she recalled finding Knuckles harmed. She could not bear to see Shadow face the same fate. Amés had crossed a line.
Amés, noticing her gaze, grinned, his orange eyes glowing with cruel amusement. "What's this? Are you going to let him die for you?" He asked, his voice dripping with venom. "Your little boyfriend can't even keep up. What are you going to do about it, Lita? Are you going to let him suffer because of you?"
Lita's body tensed at the mention of the word boyfriend. Her breath caught in her throat as the full weight of Amé's cruelty sank in. The realization that she had failed to protect someone with whom she had shared the beauty of her world deepened her sense of injury from that failure.
"Be quiet!" she yelled, her voice strained. Clutching the side of her armor. Having forgotten about her prior injury entirely. The lightning around her surged in response to her fury, crackling through the air and swirling violently.
She let her hands fall to her sides, fingers splayed outward as she gazed downward. Her eyes blazed with an electric energy, radiating a bright blue-white glow. Her body quivered as if she were cold. The mark bestowed by Eden began to shine intensely, flickering in and out of existence like a living entity.
Her breathing deepened, and her fur and quills flickered as the blue-white hue intensified, with purple sparks dancing across her form. It felt as if the essence of her power was merging with the storm above, drawing strength from the sky itself. Her entire being seemed to shift.
"What in the hell is she doing?" Amés asked himself.
Lita curled inward for a moment, then with a forceful gesture, she bent the lightning around her and directed it toward the sky. It came back down, flowing into her body. Her fur transformed into a shimmering white and blue, with hints of purple sparks dancing across her limbs. The lightning symbol within the pupils of her eyes gleamed gold pulsing in time with her heartbeat.
Her eyes—glowing blue and purple hues—locked onto Amés with newfound intensity. The self-disciplined and ambitious Lita was gone. An elemental being whose fury now matched the storm around them. The Elemental Holder of Lightning, unleashed and unstoppable.
As her transformation reached its peak, golden and white armor enveloped her. The armor seamlessly integrated into a black and white dress, which glowed with soft golden accents. Sharp golden clips adorned her quills. Her boots and gloves mirrored this design, featuring glowing symbols etched into them, marking her Eden form—her true, full power.
"You have corrupted Eden by destroying one of its realms, along with overthrowing one of its children and murdering another," she said, her voice deeper and more commanding as the lightning around her flickered and crackled. "You shall be punished as determined by the Heralds for all those who harm their beauty."
Amés stood still, momentarily taken aback by the sheer power radiating from her. He recalled only once witnessing something of this magnitude, but the person involved was no longer around, leaving him with little memory of how it began or ended. A grin soon returned to his face as a laugh escaped his throat.
"Well, well," he sneered, his black dust swirling protectively around him. "Looks like you finally decided to show your true colors. I have to admit it took longer than I expected to see you transform into something more hideous. Let's see how long you can keep it up, little lightning brat."
Amés lashed out, sending a torrent of black dust toward Lita, but she was faster than ever. She leaped into the air, her lightning blades shimmering in her hands. Each movement was precise, and each strike was crackling with destructive power.
"You won't get away with this!" Lita shouted, baring her fangs and swinging her blades in a swift arc, slicing through the air with the precision and speed of her true elemental gift.
Eden fully realized Lita felt more alive than ever—her power coursing through her veins, the lightning dancing to her will. Amés was no longer the one in control. This time, it was her turn.
The air around grew tense, charged with the raw energy of the storm and her own Elemental Holder power. The transformation had taken Lita to an entirely new level. As the lightning crackled and flashed around her, it became clear to everyone—Amés, Shadow, and even herself—that the battle had just shifted in her favor.
Her armor shimmered in the storm's eerie light, and her eyes burned with an intense blue glow, reflecting the deep storm clouds above. The lightning symbol bestowed upon her pulsed with her heartbeat, marking her as something much more than just an Elemental Holder—she was a being of Eden, and in this form, the storm was hers to command.
Her rage still simmered under the surface, but now, it was channeled into control and power. The winds howled, the ground shook slightly underfoot, and the sky above her grew darker, charged with the fury of a storm on the verge of breaking.
"You think you can stop me now?" Amés sneered, his voice dripping with arrogance. "You're no match for me, little lightning girl. This get-up even considered to be the right attire for a fight?"
Lita didn't respond to his taunting. Her mind was focused on the battle in front of her, the storm building in the sky, and the ground beneath her feet. She could feel the lightning in every nerve and cell of her body. It was part of her now. She was part of the storm.
Raising her arms with a sharp breath, the lightning crackled in the air like a living thing. She could feel the sky responding to her command. A small warmth at the tip of her fingers. The tension in the atmosphere grew tighter and heavier as she began channeling the raw energy into something far more devastating.
The storm clouds above thickened even further, and then—it began.
In a sweeping gesture, Lita brought her hands down, and the storm responded. The sky above split open, and blinding flashes descended in a chaotic cascade. Lightning surged from the heavens—a relentless downpour of jagged electric arcs that struck the ground with explosive force.
Each bolt was like a storm that could decimate anything in its path. The electric storm pulsed with its master's heartbeat, making both Shadow and Amés think they had almost heard it.
"What is happening?" Amés hissed, barely dodging as several bolts crashed beside him, their energy sizzling. Some even singed the thinnest hairs on his fur.
Shadow took advantage of the situation and limped behind a solid rock to shield himself from Lita's strikes.
No mercy was in those eyes of Eden. Lita didn't just command the rain of lightning—she was preparing something even more deadly.
Her form shifted, planting her feet firmly on the ground, arms extending outward as her eyes glowed with the storm's intensity. The lightning around her seemed to hum with anticipation.
For a brief moment, everything fell silent. The lightning rain slowed as Lita concentrated on the energy now stored in the ground—the very foot of Eden itself. She could feel the current beneath her, the electricity just waiting to be released.
Then—without warning—the ground beneath Amés began to crack and splinter, and jagged spikes of lightning shot from the earth. The ground erupted in explosive arcs—strands of lightning tearing up from the ground like untrimmed vines. Each strike of lightning surged from the ground leaving scorch marks from where they rose.
Lita's voice pierced through the storm. "I hope you can survive this, Uncle. You are not a match for a world like this. Outsiders who oppose those of Eden rarely return, much less have anything left of themselves."
Her expression shifted to one of enjoyment as a smile spread across her face, finding joy in making Amés squirm. Serves him right for trying to ruin her second home.
For a brief moment, Amés appeared shaken. He had relied on his black dust to protect him from attacks, but this relentless rain of blows was different and difficult to defend against. He could feel his arms growing tired and sore, along with the remaining patches of fur he had left.
In an attempt to save himself, Amés raised his hands to shield himself from the rain, as the black dust swirled around him to form a makeshift barrier. Yet, the lightning continued to strike. It fell relentlessly, crashing around him in sharp, brilliant flashes.
"Enough of this!" Amés roared, his eyes burning with fury as he slammed his hands to the ground, sending waves of black dust outward to block the incoming lightning. Collecting what minerals he could accumulate.
Lita prepared herself for the final strike as the lightning rain continued to crash around them. She had one more move left—one that would end the fight.
She gathered all the energy she had left, her hands crackling with power as her eyes blazed with a blue intensity that reflected the storm itself. The ground beneath them shook with the energy that pulsed from her.
Taking a deep breath, gathering every ounce of lightning she could muster. Then with another sweeping motion of her hand, pulling energy from the air, the sky, and the ground, channeling it into a single, concentrated storm. Amés looked up at her, his smirk fading as he realized what he was seeing.
Shadow peered from his rock shield only to be met with the clouds above having been turned to of blue and golden hues as if heaven had been opened. "Crazy girl is going to kill me before she kills Amés."
Quickly snapping out of his daze, Amés bared his fangs as his fur bristled, "You think you can beat me with just a few little jabs?" he sneered, readying his next attack.
Lita's gaze then turned expressionless as she stared at him down. Her hands flexed ever so slightly. "You should never have come here. There is no place for you here."
In a swift motion, a blinding bolt streaked out of the ground and up toward Amés startling the fox for a moment as he gazed down seeing if it had been Shadow but could not spot him. Lita even appeared to not have moved any part of her body either.
Amés raised his hands desperately trying to block as yet another bolt arose from the ground using his black dust as a spotted shield. Another bolt struck into his defenses with such force that the black dust surrounding him exploded into the air, scattering like ash. The lightning rising from the ground caused the ground to tremble beneath them.
"Just what do you think you're playing at!?" He yelled at Lita who only stared him down as he tried his best to know where lightning would rise next. It wasn't until he quickly remembered that when she rained down all that lightning before some of it had struck the ground meaning there was a possibility she may have stored that into the ground for a later attack.
Just as he hypothesized he set to attempt to predict when the strike of lightning would happen. He glanced at Lita once catching her grinning ever so softly and at the same time resulting in his leg feeling just the slightest bit lighter. Glancing down expecting to find possibly a patch of fur missing only to find that half of his calf was missing hanging by a thread of flesh. His body seemed to shut down from just seeing his flesh causing him to free fall as his mind became misconstrue to manage his dust. Horrified, he turned to Lita once more only to hear a couple of words.
"Blood Lightning."
The storm seemed to hold its breath for a split second, the air heavy with anticipation. Then, as the flash of light faded. Eden fell silent—except for the distant roar of the ocean far off into the distance.
The storm raged overhead. The tension in the air remained between the three. The battle had taken a toll on them all, and for a moment, a heavy silence settled between the combatants. The ground was disrupted, polka-dotted with markings that still steamed, and the air was thick with the crackle of lingering lightning, but everything seemed to pause as Amés stiffly straightened himself from colliding with the hard ground, trying to regain a sense of composure.
Descending, Lita walked towards the cowardly fox that only moments ago wished her destruction.
It never seemed to be enough. Amés raised his hands in a mock gesture of surrender, a smirk on his face. "You've made your point, Lightning Holder," he said, his voice dripping with feigned resignation. "I see that I cannot win. I yield to you."
Lita stood unmoving, her eyes narrowed as she assessed him carefully before continuing to walk towards him. Amés had no honor. However, if she had a heart of ice like Calder did, the situation would have been different. Her gaze didn't waver; her expression remained ever-passive.
"You yield ?" she asked, her voice calm yet firm. She felt the tension crackling in the air, sensing that Amé's spoken words didn't fully convey the reality of the situation. There was something else on his tongue that he didn't express. "Do you think I will fall for that?"
Amés tilted his head slightly, his smirk never faltering. "Why wouldn't you? I'm outmatched. You're stronger than I expected." His voice dropped into a mocking tone. "Besides, you're not just fighting for yourself. You've got this whole realm to protect, don't you? You and all these other hand-picked friends of yours?" His ears twitched as he licked his teeth.
Lita didn't respond immediately. She wasn't fooled but wasn't about to make the first move either. She took a step forward, her eyes never leaving Amés as she carefully watched his every motion. Behind her, Shadow stood poised, his eyes tracking Amés, ready to intervene if needed.
As Lita took another step toward him, something changed in the air. Amés's eyes darkened, and in an instant, he struck. His hand shot out, aiming for her throat in a last-ditch effort to catch her off guard.
Before Amés could deliver his strike, a sudden flash of energy shot through the air. A Chaos Spear materialized, piercing the ground just beside Amés's outstretched hand. It narrowly missed him but pinned his wrist to the earth with a sharp crack as it struck a stone protruding from the ground.
Amés froze, his eyes wide with surprise as the spear seemed to wedge farther into the stone the more he moved, making it impossible to get free.
Having appeared from his temporary shield Shadow huffed a sigh. "Enough is enough. Surely you can't be sane enough to go through that again?"
Amés gritted his teeth in frustration, trying to pull his hand away, but the Spear held him firmly. "Oh hush up, you never could compete with her anyways," he growled, eyes filled with hatred. Tail swishing side to side thumping against the ground.
Shadow merely raised an eyebrow. He nodded once toward Lita, signaling she could take over from here.
Lita took a deep breath, her Eden form glowing faintly. Her expression softened slightly as she resolved not to let Amés escape with another trick. She exchanged a glance with Shadow, a silent acknowledgment.
"Enough of this, Amés." Lita's voice conveyed an undeniable authority.
Amés seethed as he realized his plans were falling apart. He was no longer in control. His defiant grin faded, replaced by a look of grim resignation. "This won't end here. If I could have gotten inside, then who's to say Eden is completely safe?"
Lita didn't show it, but she had a thought in her mind. She stepped closer, her gaze unwavering. "We will address this when the time comes. For now, you will be dealt with according to Eden's laws and the judgment of the Heralds."
Amés clenched his teeth, his form tense, but nothing left for him to do. Shadow's Chaos Spear kept him pinned, and Lita stood before him, ready to bring an end to his schemes.
With one final, cold glance at Amés, Lita turned to Shadow, her face softening for a moment. It was finally over and done with. The fighting has ended.
—
The air crackled with tension as the Elemental Holder of Lightning ensnared Amés with a network of lightning rods. The energy surged through him, restricting his movements.
Meanwhile, with a stoic demeanor, Shadow employed Chaos Control to bind the fox's arms and legs, creating a chain that held him in place. Occasionally tightening them until hearing the fox squeak.
Lita, keeping her eyes trained on the horizon, suddenly tensed though her voice had a hint of amusement. "We have company."
Shadow narrowed his eyes, glancing in the direction she was looking. He could see the silhouettes advancing toward them, their ethereal and floating figures unnerving. "What should we do?"
"We wait," Lita replied, her voice steady, the weight of the moment pressing down on her shoulders. "When they arrive, we show them respect. There's a chance the Holder of Air or the Holder of Fire may have already informed them of what Amés did, so we'll need to remain calm."
Shadow's red eyes flickered with understanding as he nodded. "Bow our heads, then?" he asked, voice quiet, though his tone had a hint of curiosity.
Lita nodded, her expression unwavering. "Yes. Respect is important when dealing with them. They'll want to understand what happened here, and we'll need to ensure they know we didn't act out of rebellion."
As the figures of the Heralds drew nearer, their ethereal forms shimmering with power, Lita gracefully lowered herself, bowing, while Shadow mirrored her, albeit with a more guarded stance. Amés, struggling beneath the bindings, let out a growl of frustration, but his movements were futile against the energy constraining him.
The Heralds arrived, their presence radiating authority and ancient wisdom. They surveyed the scene, their eyes locking on Amés, who was still thrashing against his bonds. They approached with an air of indifference, extending their hands toward him. Energy surged from their fingertips, further tightening the hold around the fox.
"Let me go!" Amés shouted, his fury mingling with fear as he was dragged toward the mountain where the Herald Council resided.
The Heralds remained unyielding, their grip firm as they began their ascent. Lita watched with a mix of relief and concern, while Shadow stood back, his arms crossed. "Do you think they'll truly hold him accountable?"
"They have their ways," Lita replied, her gaze unwavering. "Amés underestimated the power of the Council. This isn't the end for him; it's just a lesson."
As the Heralds began to lead Amés away, Lita started to follow behind them without a word. Shadow watched her for a moment, confusion furrowing his brow.
"Where are you going?" He asked her.
Lita glanced back, her eyes having flickered to amber for a moment then back to her Holder ones. "To ensure that Amés is locked away for good. You can join if you'd like."
Shadow considered her words, weighing the implications. After a brief moment of contemplation, he nodded.
Amés had been a formidable enemy, his rage and desperation never let up even as he was subdued. His last moments of defiance were a chaotic blare of shouts and curses as the Herald took him away. Dragging to imprison him at the opposite door of the mountain entrance beneath their stand, a foreboding gateway designed with not-so-cordial faces aimed.
Amés's voice echoed through the mountain corridor, filled with venomous anger and resentment as she glared at Lita. "You've ruined everything! You've taken everything from me! I will make sure you pay for this, and I will never forgive you for taking my sister away!"
Though knowing not to take his words to heart. Lita, her energy spent and her spirit heavy, watched with relief as he was taken away. The weight of his accusations and the chaos he'd wrought lingered above her like a cloud of anxiety.
Once he was out of sight, the doors closing with a resounding boom, she quickly stepped outside, the cool air of the mountain evening offering a momentary reprieve from the intensity of the confrontation.
The cool outside air did little to ease her mind. Leaning against the stone-carved wall, she couldn't help but dwell on the aftermath of the battle and the implications of what had transpired. The suddenness of everything made her feel like everything was coming to a close, like an epic story she didn't want to finish.
Suddenly, a familiar figure appeared beside me. Shadow materialized with a flash of Chaos Control, his presence bringing her reassurance amidst the quiet, and should she never admit it made her feel safe.
Lita looked up as he approached, her eyes weary but grateful. "Shadow," she said softly, her voice carrying a note of fatigue. "Amés is finally gone and can no longer harm anyone. The Heralds will ensure he's contained."
Shadow's expression was empathetic, knowing she must have felt alone while locking away the last of her past family. He nodded, his gaze steady as he placed a gentle hand on her back. "You did what you had to do. Ames is no longer a threat to you or Eden. The Heralds will see to it that he remains powerless."
Lita let out a deep sigh, feeling her shoulders relax as the tension from the recent battle faded. "I know. I just wish things could have ended differently. It's hard to see my uncle like that. I wonder if my people will still trust me given the complicated circumstances."
Shadow's gaze softened, expression filled with understanding. "They will. Not once would I believe you betrayed them or Eden. If I were to be one of your villagers I'd hold out for you Aster."
It was brief, but Shadow noticed a small flicker in her eyes that quickly disappeared, causing her smile to slightly drop. He wondered if he hadn't spoken appropriately.
—
As the final preparations for departure were underway, Lita led her village and friends to the temple, where the portal remained active. The once-bustling village now lay eerily silent, its inhabitants' absence signaling the end of a tumultuous period.
Eden no longer seemed as it once was. It was silent, lacking its inhabitants, which made it seem abandoned. It wasn't just her village that was moved, but also the neighboring villages, along with their stationed Holder, who thanked her for saving Eden. They chose to leave for their own sake wanting to see the Surface for themselves.
Shadow, having overseen the smooth passage of everyone through the portal, noticed that Lita had remained outside the entrance, staring down from the steps to the empty streets of her village. The quiet seemed almost oppressive, the familiar surroundings now tinged with a sense of finality.
He approached, his footsteps soft on the dust-covered path. "You alright?" he asked gently, concern evident in his tone.
Lita turned to face him, her expression a mix of contemplation and melancholy. "It's strange, Shadow. I've never felt more satisfied yet empty at the same time. We've managed to save Eden and ensure that Amés is no longer a threat, but seeing the village so quiet... I'm left feeling empty."
Shadow nodded, understanding the emotions she was experiencing. "It's natural to feel that way. After everything you've been through, it's normal to have mixed feelings. But you've done an incredible job. Everyone is safe, and that's what's important."
Lita managed a small, appreciative smile, eyes shifting around for a moment then fell back to him. "Thanks. There's something I need to check before we go, though."
Shadow raised an eyebrow, curiosity piqued by her sudden declaration. "What is it?"
Lita's gaze drifted back towards the temple, her focus sharp and determined. "It's nothing to worry about. I just want to make sure that Amés didn't leave any traces of himself or his influence behind. Even though he's been contained, I need to be certain that he hasn't left any lingering threats."
Shadow's eyes softened with understanding. "I see. It's smart to be thorough."
Nodding, Lita took a deep breath—a hitch in her throat. "I need to be sure that everything is secure before we leave. I couldn't rest knowing something might have been missed."
Lita and Shadow stood atop the temple steps, gazing across the now-deserted village. Beats of wings were heard from above as feathers of gold fell around. Aeolus, the Holder of Air, landed gracefully just below the temple steps. The powerful Holder's wings folded neatly as he touched down.
Shadow surprised by the sudden appearance of Holder of Air noted the subtle shift in Aeolus's posture—the way the great hawk avoided direct eye contact and kept his head turned away. It struck him as odd, a gesture that suggested a sense of discomfort or perhaps Aeolus was simply trying to avoid revealing any damage sustained during the confrontation with Amés.
Shadow observed the scene with apprehension. "Why is Aeolus here?" he wondered aloud, his gaze shifting between the avian and Lita.
Lita's face suddenly lit up as if she had just found happiness again. "Aeolus is going to help me check. I'll only be a moment," She voiced, hopping onto Aeolus's back without further explanation.
Shadow watched as Lita settled comfortably onto Aeolus, her posture indicating that she was accustomed to this. Aeolus responded with a gentle but powerful flap of his wings, lifting off from the ground with a smooth ascent. The pair rose into the sky, heading towards the distant horizon.
As they ascended, Shadow felt a nagging sense of unease. There was something about Lita's departure that felt slightly off, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it. Her urgency and the way she had Aeolus unexpectedly join hinted at an underlying concern that she hadn't fully shared. Shadow's instincts told him that there was more to this than met the eye.
Standing at the temple entrance, Shadow remained vigilant, his eyes tracking the retreating forms of Lita and Aeolus. He waited patiently, the quiet of the empty village surrounding him amplifying his thoughts and concerns.
He replayed the events in his mind, trying to uncover clues about why Lita needed to leave so urgently and why Aeolus had been summoned at that moment. The great Holder's calm demeanor and Lita's focused expression suggested that whatever she was doing was of great significance.
He continued to wait. He was trusting Lita's judgment.
—
The world below became a blur as Lita sat on Aeolus's back. The silence was heavy, filled with the weight of what was to come. Aeolus's golden feathers rustled softly in the wind, starkly contrasting the quiet tension that enveloped Lita.
As she gazed over the edge of the floating island they were approaching, her mind was filled with conflicting thoughts. The once-clear lines of duty and righteousness had become murky. Always loyal to the rules as the Elemental Holder of Lightning, she now found herself in turmoil. Her thoughts conflicted with the boundary between the Surface and Eden about to vanish.
Aeolus, sensing the uneasiness within her, broke the silence. His voice was a deep rumble, gentle yet firm. "Aster, I know this choice weighs heavily on you. It's not the destruction of Eden that troubles me, but your lack of hesitation. You've always been so guided by principle; to see you so uncompromising now..."
Lita turned her gaze toward Aeolus, her eyes reflecting the distant shimmer of the floating island. "I've followed the rules for so long," She began, her voice soft. "In doing so, I forgot to consider the other side. Separating Eden isn't just about keeping a secret place or protecting certain people—it's also about ensuring that no one else can exploit it or fall victim to the Herald's manipulations. It's a harsh necessity."
Aeolus nodded, his wings beating steadily as he glided through the air. "Sometimes, to protect what we love, we must make choices that seem unforgiving. I understand now that your will is not just about following the rules but making sure that no more harm comes from what lies here."
Lita sighed, the weight of her decision pressing down on her shoulders. "Yes, it's about ensuring that the power of Eden remains out of reach of those who would use it for destruction. It's a sacrifice, but one I believe is necessary."
She felt a profound melancholy as they neared the floating island. The boundary between the surface and Eden was close to shattering.
As both approached the floating island, Lita gazed down at the land below, taking in the sweeping view of Eden one last time. The lush expanse of the floating realm, with its vibrant colors and serene beauty, seemed almost surreal against the backdrop of her impending task. Her thoughts drifted to her friends and how they would manage in her absence. The idea of leaving them behind, uncertain of their future, weighed heavily on her heart.
Aeolus, noticing the wistful look on her face, spoke up gently, "Aster, did you inform your friends about what will happen when the boundary is shattered?"
Lita's gaze remained fixed on Eden as she replied, her voice tinged with regret, closing her eyes briefly. "I told them to leave as fast as they could and to wait for me on the other side."
A silence settled between them as the words echoed in Lita's mind. She had never been one to lie, her life governed by a strict adherence to honesty and duty. But now, as she reflected on her own words, she realized the unsettling truth. "I... I told them to wait for me," she said slowly, discomfort creeping into her voice. "But I never mentioned that I might not make it back."
Aeolus's sharp eyes, even from his elevated vantage point, softened with understanding. "You haven't lied since you were a child, have you?"
Lita shook her head, the weight of her confession adding to her burden. "No, I haven't. It's been so long since I've needed to. I didn't mean to deceive them, but I suppose... I was trying to protect them from the truth."
Her thoughts turned inward as she considered the implications of her actions. "I wanted them to be safe, to focus on going home and not worry about the possibility that I might not return. I've left out a part of the reality they deserve to know."
Aeolus wings beat steadily, a reassuring rhythm amongst the brisk wind. "Sometimes, the truth is too heavy to bear all at once. But you must trust that your friends will understand your intentions. They know you're protecting everyone."
Lita nodded, drawing strength from Aeolus's words. As the floating island loomed closer, she took a deep breath, steeling herself for what was to come. She knew that this decision, while fraught with repudiation, was made with the hope of securing a future for those she cared about.
With one final glance at Eden, Lita's resolve solidified. She would face the consequences of her actions with the same bravery she had always upheld. In her heart, she held onto the hope that her friends would find safety and understand the reasons behind her choices, even if her chosen path was not the one she had hoped.
As Aeolus descended gracefully onto the floating island, the majestic totems came into full view. They stood tall and imposing, each one representing the core elements that governed their world. The island was a different contrast to the turbulent emotions within Lita.
Dismounting from Aeolus's back, shoes touching the solid ground of the island. The air was crisp and smelled similar to ozone, a reminder of the immense power contained within these ancient pillars. Lita took a moment to survey the totems, each one pulsing with elemental energy, then turned her gaze to Aeolus.
Aeolus perched beside her, his golden feathers catching the light as he settled. His voice, though calm, carried an undertone of reassurance. "Aster, you don't need to worry about your friends. Fotiá and I will ensure they are safely escorted home. They'll be protected, and we'll see them through."
Lita's eyes softened at his words, gratitude mingling with the sadness in her heart. She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around Aeolus's feathered chest not minding his armor plate in the heartfelt embrace as a small tear escaped her eye. "Thank you, Aeolus. For everything."
Aeolus nuzzled her gently before stepping back. "You've made a difficult choice. Remember, it's not just the strength that makes you a hero, but your unwavering commitment to protecting others." With one last, reassuring glance, Aeolus spread his wings and took to the sky. His golden form shimmered as he soared, returning to fulfill his promise.
Standing alone before the totems, Lita took a deep breath and centered herself. The floating island was silent but for the whisper of the wind and the hum of the elemental energy. The stage for the final act of her journey.
Taking in a breath Lita conquered her power to the palms of her hands emitting sparks before forcing them at the totems like leashes, lifting herself off the ground, and pouring her full focus.
—
Shadow stood by the entrance of the Lightning temple, his gaze fixed on the swirling portal that beckoned with its shimmering promise of the unknown. The ambient light from the portal cast a faint glow over his determined features, highlighting the intensity in his eyes. He had been waiting for Lita to return, prepared to move forward with their plan once she was back.
The soft thrum of Aeolus's wings broke the silence, and the golden eagle landed gracefully beside Shadow. The sight of Aeolus, now alone, immediately drew Shadow's attention.
"Where is she?" Shadow demanded, his voice taut with concern.
Aeolus's gaze was somber as he met Shadow's eyes. "Asterope is fulfilling her role. She will be severing the boundary between Eden and the Surface."
Shadow's heart sank at the weight of Aeolus's words. Having known Lita would do something so monumental he would have gone with her, but the gravity of the situation was beginning to settle heavily on him. "Will she be back?"
Aeolus hesitated, the silence stretching between them like an ominous veil. His eyes held a deep, unspoken truth that seemed to echo in the space around them. Finally, Aeolus spoke. His voice was quiet and filled with a gravity that Shadow could not ignore. "I cannot say for certain when she will return."
The pause and the unspoken heaviness in Aeolus's words did not go unnoticed by Shadow. He took a sharp breath, a chill running down his spine as he began to grasp the full implication of the situation. The look in Aeolus's eyes and the weight of his silence spoke volumes.
As Aeolus prepared to step toward the portal. The situation became clearer with each passing second. Shadow's eyes narrowed, taking a deep breath to ground himself, the weight of the moment settling heavily on his shoulders.
Aeolus, sensing Shadow's staling, turned to him with a solemn expression. "Shadow, you should go while you can."
Shadow, however, was not swayed. "No, I won't be going, not yet. I need to know where Lita is. I want to be there with her."
Aeolus's gaze hardened slightly, the depth evident in his eyes. "You cannot go to where she is. It is a place no outsiders may go. It's beyond the reach of those not bound to Eden."
Shadow smiled wryly, fully aware of the irony of the situation. "Isn't it funny how all Elemental Holders used to be outsiders themselves? They were granted their powers and allowed to enter realms and places that were once closed off to them. And now you're telling me I can't go because I'm not one of you? You're permitting one of your own to sacrifice herself but won't allow another to stand with her?"
His voice carried a mix of frustration and a hint of empathy. "I understand that you're trying to protect my friends and the Surface, but isn't that what we're all doing? Trust me, I lost those I loved long ago. I don't want to go through that again, nor do I wish it for anyone else. I know you wouldn't want that either."
Aeolus's expression softened slightly as he absorbed Shadow's words. "It's not that I want to deny you the chance to help. It's about recognizing that some places are meant to remain out of our reach. Once we cross that boundary, it can never be undone."
Shadow stepped closer, expression determined. "Maybe, but I have to try. Just because my power is subdued here, it doesn't stop me from at least giving her a fighting chance. So I beg you, give me a chance regardless of the rules."
Aeolus looked at him with a mix of respect and sadness. Despite his conflicted loyalties, a sense of rebellion hid in him, knowing that the Heralds were currently preoccupied. "You have a strong spirit, Shadow. I can tell that you are undaunted by the risks. However, you must understand that the place where Asterope is located is not one where you can easily offer help."
Shadow's gaze was unwavering. "Then take me as far as you can. Let me help Aster. It's what I owe her."
Aeolus hesitated, but the determination in Shadow's eyes seemed to convince him of the depth of his commitment. With a sigh, he nodded slowly. "Very well. I'll take you, but beyond that, you will need to rely on your strength."
Shadow nodded, his face expressing deep gratitude. "Thank you, Aeolus."
—
Rouge paced impatiently on the other side of the portal, her eyes darting toward the swirling gateway with a mix of frustration and concern. The dimly lit surroundings of the temple offered little comfort as she waited for Shadow to emerge. The anticipation was growing, and she couldn't shake the feeling that time was slipping away.
Knuckles, leaning against a ruined pillar, arms bandaged from his injuries, watched her with a knowing look. "Maybe he's still waiting for Lightning to get back. Given what they both went through, I wouldn't put it past him."
Rouge let out an exasperated sigh, her patience wearing thin. "We've been waiting for what feels like hours. If Shadow's still waiting for Lightning, we need to move on. We can't afford to waste any more time."
She cast a last, longing look at the portal before making up her mind and ignoring Knuckles' protests. "I'm going back in. Maybe I can find out what's going on."
Stepping back through the portal without saying a word, Rouge felt her frustration propel her into action. The familiar ethereal light enveloped her as she reentered the temple. The halls were silent, except for the faint hum of elemental energy resonating through the ancient stone.
She quickened her pace, folding her wings behind her as she sprinted toward the temple entrance. The rhythmic flaps of her wings echoed throughout the area. She halted as she reached the door, her eyes widening at the sight.
Rouge's eyes narrowed, a mixture of surprise and concern flashing across her face. "Shadow! What's going on? Where are you going?"
Shadow perched atop Aeolus, the Holder of Air's wings unfurled and poised for flight. Shadow's expression was a mix of determination and urgency, his hands gripped Aeolus's back feathers with a firm but mindful touch.
Shadow glanced back at her, his eyes sharp and focused. "Rouge. You need to go back."
Rogue's gaze was fixed on Shadow, puzzled by his decision to leave after she thought he was just waiting for Lightning. She wasn't going to be excluded. "Shadow, what's this all about? You're not making any sense," her voice was urgent and she felt confused as her hands quivered.
Shadow's face was set with a grim determination. "I need to help Asterope. She's in danger if we don't intervene soon."
Rouge's eyes widened in shock. "Asterope? Do you mean Lightning? Is she–" The realization hit her hard, feeling her chest become tight. "But why? What's going on?"
Aeolus, who had been waiting patiently, rumbled softly. "We must hurry," he stated, voice low and resonant. "If we delay any longer, we may not arrive in time to prevent the inevitable."
Rouge looked from Shadow to Aeolus, weighing her options. She knew the gravity of the situation but was also aware of other pressing matters. "Alright, but you need to be careful," she said, her tone softer now but still urgent. "And make sure you bring Lightning or Aster or whatever her name is back in time for Amy's celebration party. She mustn't miss out this time."
With a final glance at Rouge, Shadow signaled to Aeolus. The Great Holders' wings flared wide, and with a powerful thrust, they began their ascent into the sky. As they soared, Rouge watched them fade into the distance, her mind heavy with worry and hope.
—
As Shadow and Aeolus approached the floating island where Lita was located, the landscape below started to appear glum as mackerel clouds brought small drops of rain. The air crackled with electric tension, and Shadow could see the shimmering barrier that surrounded Lita's position. The island itself seemed to pulse with a strange, otherworldly light.
Aeolus descended carefully, his powerful wings beating rhythmically as he lowered himself onto a floating land across from Lita. Shadow leaped from Aeolus's back, landing with dexterity. He immediately scanned the area, his eyes narrowing on Lita.
What a formidable sight Lita was. Actively channeling power into the totems causing them to crackle under the electric force, the totems pushed back with their power creating a barrier that shimmered white with an ominous hue of purple. Shadow could see the barrier expanding and contracting with each pulse Lita used.
Shadow started to move forward, intent on reaching Lita and helping her. But Aeolus's deep, resonant voice stopped him in his tracks. "Shadow, wait! You can't get any closer."
Shadow turned back, his expression defiant, his eyes filled with confusion and urgency. "What are you talking about? I need to help her!"
Aeolus shook his head, the electric glow from the barrier reflected in both eyes. "If you try to approach, you'll be incinerated by the barrier. It's too dangerous. The power Asterope is unleashing is beyond anything you can handle directly."
Shadow's fists clenched at his sides, his frustration evident. He could see the struggle Lita was having and wanted to intervene, but the reality of the situation was sinking in. Remaining beside Aeolus, eyes fixed on Lita as she continued her destructive work. The intense energy radiating from the totems created a harsh, brilliant light that illuminated the melancholy sky.
As Lita continued channeling her power into the totems, her intense focus was suddenly broken by the silhouette of Shadow. Her heart skipped a beat at the sight of Shadow standing just across.
For a moment, time seemed to stand still. Lita's eyes locked onto Shadow's, and an array of emotions flickered across her face—surprise, relief, and a deep sadness. The intense power she wielded momentarily waned as she grappled with the realization that this might be the last time she would see him.
His mouth was moving and she desperately wanted to hear his words. But the roar of the electric energy was deafening. The crackling of the barrier and the pulsive bursts of power from the totems created a cacophony that drowned out all other sounds. The static buzz in her ears made it impossible.
Lita couldn't look away from Shadow. She strained to catch every movement and expression, but the toll of the totems' power was almost physically painful. It pressed against her senses, making it impossible to focus. Even through her gloves, she could feel the heat.
Despite the noise, Lita's eyes softened with a mixture of sadness and acceptance. The finality of the moment settled over her like a heavyweight.
As the totems started to shatter and the barrier's energy reached its peak, Lita closed her eyes, letting the radiant power envelop her completely. A wave surged outwards, its sheer force casting a blinding light across Eden.
As the enormous wave of energy erupted from the destroyed totems, Shadow and Aeolus were forced to shield their eyes from the blinding brilliance. The intensity of the light was overwhelming, and the crackling, searing heat of the energy wave pushed against them, making it nearly impossible to hear. They needed to grasp onto one another to avoid falling.
Shadow squinted through the glare, trying to orient himself. For a moment, Eden was nothing but a tumultuous sea of light.
Then, suddenly, everything stopped. An eerie silence filled the air, as if time had been momentarily suspended. Aeolus moved his wings, which had formed a protective cage around them. Shadow's eyes adjusted as the light began to fade. His heart pounded as he tried to make sense of what had just happened.
Looking around, Shadow saw that the floating islands of Eden were starting to crumble and disintegrate. A cascade of debris that plummeted toward the Surface below. The once-stable realms were breaking apart, their structures disintegrating into ruins.
Shadow's eyes widened in horror. "Aeolus, what's happening?"
Aeolus looked grim as he surveyed the destruction. "The totems were the keystones that held Eden together. They stabilized the realms and kept Eden from the surface. Now that they've been destroyed, the structural integrity of Eden has been compromised. Without the totems, everything is collapsing and will eventually fall to the surface."
Shadow's gaze snapped back to Lita, who slowly descended amongst the shattered remnants of the totems having been burnt leaving a strong woody smell in the air. Her power dwindled causing her familiar cyan fur to come back, exhausted, legs trembling with adrenaline. Despite her power fading, she managed to cast a tender smile in Shadow's direction.
Shadow stood baffled by what was witnessed. His fists trembled as the residual energy could be felt traveling across his body, sending a shiver up his spine.
The ground beneath Lita began to wither, cracking with no power to keep it held. The pieces of the island started to break away, and her smile remained steady even as the ground beneath her gave way.
Lita smiled at him wanting to wave but her hands were sore. Letting out a gentle sigh. She felt anticipation running through her body as she focused on the ash-crumbling totems. No more shall there be any Elemental Holders and no more shall people be taken.
Relieved that Amês no longer held any power over them, but at the same time, she felt disappointed and guilty for desecrating the land that had given them a second home and a purpose.
Despite her conflicting feelings, Lita felt unburdened to explore a new chapter in her life. However, she knew that her actions had consequences and that she would still have to face punishment.
Echoed across the sky the floating islands crumbled past the clouds and down to Eden. The golden-hued sky faded with their descent.
Seeing that there was no time to waste, wanting nothing more than to get out of here. Shadow yelled, trying to catch Lita's attention. She glanced briefly, giving him a tired thumbs up as the ground trembled beneath her.
Watching on in disbelief. Lita did not attempt to move or jump, instead reaching out a hand despite the distance between them. The final bit of ground and so did she allow herself to fall into the clouds with the rest of Eden.
The crumbling of the barrier bellowed across the land as Eden started to descend, having lost its protection of being separated from the surface. All that was above was now becoming what is below.
As the fragments of Eden continued to tumble toward the surface, Shadow remained still, his eyes locked on where Lita once stood. The gravity of the situation was overwhelming, and he felt a familiar sense of loss and helplessness. The once-vibrant realm was now a chaotic storm of falling debris.
Aeolus, recognizing the urgency of their predicament, turned to Shadow with a commanding tone. "Shadow, We need to get back to the portal immediately!"
Shadow's gaze remained fixed, his mind struggling to process the magnitude. He didn't respond to Aeolus's urgent plea, his heart weighed down by the sight of Lita's descent.
Aeolus's tone grew more insistent seeing Shadow's hesitation. "Shadow! We have to leave now! Eden is falling apart!"
Still, Shadow remained silent. The image of Lita falling like that. He couldn't just run away, not after everything she shared with him. He wouldn't let a repeat happen.
Finally, he turned, eyes filled with resolve and something Aeolus could not describe. "Forgive me, Aeolus. I can't abandon Lita. Not after everything she has done for me. For everyone."
Before Aeolus could react, Shadow leaped from the edge of the floating island, his form cutting through the air as he descended downward. Activating Chaos Control skating amongst falling debris.
From above, Aeolus's voice rang out. Shadow ignored the desperate call, his focus entirely on reaching the fallen holder.
The gloomy skies of Eden always annoyed Lita. She wondered why the Heralds even bothered to create a sun, as the sky would just change when the Heralds deemed it. Perhaps the Heralds didn't have the eyes to appreciate the beauty of the Surface and only wanted something more simple.
Despite her fear of falling endlessly, she felt strangely light and relaxed. It was a sad realization that things were already set and couldn't be changed. However, she hoped that when she finally reached the bottom, her soon-to-be tomb would protect her and she wouldn't feel anything.
As Shadow descended, the cold wind agitated the skin on his muzzle. He balled his fists skating as close as possible avoiding fallen debris around and above. Urgently looking around in all directions, jumping off pieces of falling islands to descend downwards safely.
His eyes finally locked onto Lita, falling among the shattered pieces of her world. Her energy was visibly waning, and her form was surrounded by a faint, dim aura.
"Lita!" Shadow shouted, his voice breaking through the cacophony of falling debris.
She met Shadow's gaze, managing a weak but affectionate smile. Lita's eyes conveyed contentment, knowing her time was ending.
Shadow's patience was wearing thin. "Please!" He pleaded, extending a hand.
In swift motion, Lita lifted her palms towards Shadow, emitting a bright white and blue electric halo. Her lip trembled and her chest ached with the growing coldness.
"Please, Don't—" Shadow's plea was swallowed by the force of the energy. He struggled against the pushing power, trying to move closer.
She bit her lip, tears welling up in her eyes. "Take care, love." Lita whimpered, flexing her hands, sending the ring up and capturing Shadow. "Aphiemi."
Shadow's voice echoed, upwards and away. Unable to break the force against him like he was magnetized to it.
Lita's sympathetic smile never wavered, even as her form disappeared below the clouds. The light of her power flickering away.
Shadow's heart pounded in his chest. The sight of Lita fading away was a bitter pill to swallow. He could only watch until she was no more. Yet again he had lost someone.
It was best to dissociate with the Surface as those with great power could never be granted back. What they once were, and those who are to find out will have no contingency to help. It was futile to try something different.

The shattered remnants of Eden have settled upon the surface. The land, now a patchwork of new realms, has fused into a vibrant and unified landscape, bringing together cultures and communities. Villages from neighboring realms, once separated, are now part of a unified world, with old boundaries erased and new opportunities born.
The villagers faced with change had made their own choices. Some chose to remain on their original land, adapting to the new reality of a unified Surface. Others clung to their traditions and homesteads, choosing to stay in what remained of their home.
Others embraced the opportunity, moving to new regions and integrating with the wider community. This migration brought fresh perspectives and fostered both old and new cultures, each contributing to the newly merged world. Some named it New Eden.
However, the integration of New Eden into the Surface was not without its cost. For some, the loss of their old homes was a poignant reminder of what had been. The transition had left a void that was deeply felt, a reminder of the homes that had been lost in the collapse and the subsequent merging of lands.
Amid this new land, Shadow found himself grappling with his recent loss as he roamed the newly formed lands. The land had changed, and so had he, yet the vibrant society around him stood with its people prospering.
As Shadow walked through the bustling markets and thriving communities, he saw the fruits of their collective efforts—a society that had risen from the rubble. The new world was alive with possibilities, and it was clear that despite the pain of the past, there was a future to be built.
—
In a secluded part of New Eden, there was a bridge that led to the resting place of past Elemental Holders, memorialized in stone.
Standing against the backdrop of a gentle waterfall, its water sparkling as it tumbled down a rocky slope. The cascade flowed beneath the suspended stone bridge that arched above the river below, its clear waters meandering through the valley.
As Shadow walked across the stone bridge, the gentle sound of the flowing water beneath him calmed his thoughts. He looked out at the river below, watching as it snaked its way through the lush, green valley.
The bridge led to a viewpoint where the valley opened up in all its splendor. The vibrant greenery of the new landscape stretched out before him, an image of renewal.
The memorial had given Shadow a space to honor the past and acknowledge the one lost. As he looked out over the valley, he saw the world taking shape—one that was marked by both the weight of history and the promise of a brighter future
Stone-carved tablets formed below the tributed statues. Each tablet bore the likeness of each Elemental Holder, even the ones that tainted their role. The figures were immortalized and adorned with mimicked clothing or assigned weapons.
A statue was set apart from the others, elevated on a pedestal adorned with carvings of symbols associated with her given power. Lita's likeness is captured in a form poised neatly. Her stone visage conveys compassion and protection.
Shadow stood silently before Lita's statue, the quiet of the memorial offering a space for reflection. His thoughts were heavy from the final moments he had of her and from having to see her as this.
He was so absorbed in his thoughts that he almost didn't notice the sound of footsteps approaching. Initially, he assumed it was just another visitor coming to pay their respects, having given it little thought. However, when he heard a familiar voice call out his name.
"Shadow."
The voice was unmistakable.
Turning his head, Shadow's eyes widened. Rakhi stood a short distance away, her presence a welcome and unexpected sight amidst the solemnity of the memorial.
"Rakhi?" Shadow's voice held a mix of astonishment and warmth. "I didn't expect to see you."
The tigress approached with a gentle smile, her eyes reflecting relief. "I came to pay my respects and catch up. There's been so much to manage since everything changed."
She approached Lita's statue expression solemnly, standing beside Shadow. The nature around the memorial seemed to offer a moment of solace for both of them.
"It's been some time," Rakhi began, her voice soft with a slight rasp. "I've been busy with moving both my people and those from the water realm. Calder is no longer leading them, so it's fallen on me. It's taxing, but it gives me something to do."
Shadow nodded in understanding. "I can imagine."
Rakhi's smile grew as she turned to Shadow. "It's been challenging, but it's rewarding to see everything coming together. I just wanted to make sure I came here to see Ast... Lita and also to see how you're doing."
Shadow wouldn't admit it, but he felt flattered that Rakhi thought of him. As he thought about what to say, his attention was drawn to Rakhi's hands, which were glowing faintly. "You still have your powers?"
Rakhi nodded, her expression slightly embarrassed. "All of us thought that when Eden had fallen, our powers would disappear as well." In a swift gesture, she conjured a bright red lotus, shimmering white, which floated in the air before gently settling on the base of Lita's tablet.
"It seemed appropriate to leave something of my own for her. I didn't want to leave again without giving her something first."
Shadow gazed with admiration at the flickering crimson lotus. "I'm sure Lita would have appreciated it."
Rakhi nodded, her expression one of quiet resolve. "It's the least I could do."
As both stood together, the ambiance of the memorial seemed to hold a deeper significance.
"I have to go back," she said, smoothing out her sari. "There's still work to be done."
Shadow nodded, understanding the importance. "Till we meet again, Rakhi."
Rakhi frowned momentarily before rummaging into her pouch, and pulling out a small, folded piece of paper. "Take this. It contains something important. You'll find the rest in the library."
Shadow took the paper, a hint of curiosity in his demeanor. "What's this about?"
Rakhi looked off to the side offering a faint smile. "You'll find out soon enough. Till then, Shadow."
With a brief, but sincere embrace, Rakhi turned and walked away, her form gradually disappearing amongst the mist from the waterfall. As Shadow watched her go, he then turned his attention to the small note in hand.

The library was quiet and still. Shadow moved carefully, not wanting to step on any intact books. His footsteps were soft against the dusty floor as books and loose pages were scattered around, disrupted from their places during the fall. The room was enveloped in silence, with the grandfather clock having been damaged.
The last time he was here, people were enjoying books. Looking up, he could see a corner of the observatory balcony peeking from the ceiling window. Lita had led him to the top of that building. He wondered if the view was the same or if it had been destroyed.
Eventually, he found a book with the title Pneuma embossed in delicate, faded gold. He pulled it from its shelving and opened it, the pages whispering as he turned them.
The pages had yellowed with age, but the writing was remarkably legible. As Shadow read, the words told a peculiar picture: the statues of the Elemental Holders were not mere monuments, but rather their physical bodies. However, their souls resided in the Underworld, either imprisoned or undergoing judgment. They existed in a state of eternal dreaming within their stone forms.
Shadow read the passage quietly, the weight of the information settling over him with a slow gravity. The book speaks of the delicate stories of brave men traveling to an underworld to retrieve those they have lost and loved some even remaining there themselves.
After reading, Shadow closed the book with deliberate care. The implications were profound, as he understood what Rakhi had given him. There was an answer to bring Lita home.
