~Chapter One~
After her husband passed away she made a friend with a powerful family in New York, the Vanderbilt's. She disclosed her secret of immortality to Cornelius Vanderbilt, and in return he promised his family would help keep her secret and would pay for new identities to be established for her when it came time. The Vanderbilt's helped keep her hidden in plain view since the early 1800s. Lianna had never been so thankful, when Cornelius passed away she morned his death. She would morn many of the Vanderbilt's deaths over the years.
When the strain of the creatures she once hunted plagued New York, her instincts kicked in and she rejoined the fight. It had been quite some time since Lianna actively hunted the strigoi day and night. Even as her hope to cleanse the land of their kind wavered her pursuit for this goal did not. Simon would always tell her, "If you give up hope humanity will be lost." She had lived for over a thousand years, and saw many of the grotesque behaviors humans were capable of. However, this was never enough for her to give up faith on humanity. Through all of the hideous human behavior she witnessed she also experienced the love and kindness humanity was capable of as well.
Current Day
Lianna eventually moved out of upstate New York and into a industrial loft in Red Hook. When the plague first broke out Lianna took her truck and gathered what supplies she would need: ammunition, a new sword, a sharpening rock, and materials to fortify her home. Because she was immortal she did not require as much food and water as a normal human to stay strong, so this was the last thing she gathered.
The first bomb had hit months earlier and while she hid underground for a short time she was able to return to the surface much sooner than ordinary humans. When she saw the new plans for the world she grabbed what weapons and supplies she could carry and found a new safe house in an old abandoned theater.
She was out clearing a building of strigoi, cutting through them with ease as she swung her sword. By the numbers of strigoi inhabiting the building she assumed they had made this building their nesting ground. She slowly snuck up to a room with glass windows on the door where she saw at least twenty strigoi feeding from what looked like an animal trough full of blood. As she watched she debated the best angle of attack.
Gus was out hunting strigoi, for the moment no one knew where the master was, and he did not wish to grow rusty waiting around. He picked a building he had seen strigoi coming in and out of in massive numbers and thought there was no better place to practice. As he rounded a corner in the building he stopped when he saw a gorgeous woman knelt down peering through the window of the door, holding a sword dripping with white blood. Almost as soon as he saw her, with unnatural speed, she was up and holding the sword to his neck. She stopped far enough away that the worms and blood would not touch him. He watched as the worms wiggled along the length of her blade.
He finally whispered, "I am Gus. I mean you no harm, just like you I'm here to kill those bastards." She stared at him unsure of what to say, since the outbreak she had not talked to anyone. He continued, "look we are both here how about we work together to finish clearing this building? How many are in there?"
She smiled, "twenty. If I kill more than you, you have to help me clear another building. If you kill more, I have to help you with whatever task you wish."
Gus had to stop himself from laughing so the strigoi would not hear them. He returned the smile, he loved the thought of a challenge. "You've got yourself a deal", he said as he reached his hand out. She gripped it tightly and gave his hand one good shake as a devilish smile danced across her lips. And with that they charged into the room, and it immediately irrupted in chaos. The two together cleared the room within minutes. They both smiled as they glanced over the strigoi bodies admiring their work.
"I do believe I have you beat by one", Gus said with a laugh. Lianna could tell he was very pleased with himself. "So I do believe you owe me a favor. I need to break into a high security building for medical supplies, and in the same building there is an armory. I could really use your help on this but it will be dangerous."
"My whole life I have lived for danger, and a deal is a deal." This comment made Gus confused, Lianna only looked like she was in her early twenties. "Shall we?"
Gus smiled and nodded, "follow me this way." The two were soon out of the building and sneaking through ally ways. Gus reached a manhole that would take them to a set of underground tunnels that would take them right up to underneath the building. As they walked through the darkness of the tunnels he turned and finally asked a question that had been on his mind, "so what is a girl like you doing clearing buildings, isn't that a little dangerous?"
Lianna laughed, "if only you knew my friend." She smiled, she knew Gus most likely assumed she was in her twenties and born and raised in New York City. A privileged white girl, with no worries in the world. Her life was quite the opposite.
"Alright, so I am most likely judging you based on appearance, I am sorry." He stopped and began to climb a latter, "up through here, watch your step the latter is slick." Lianna began to climb behind Gus, when suddenly he slipped almost knocking her off. "Shit my bad!"
"Careful it's slick remember", she whispered. Gus could picture her grinning as she said it. As they came up in the basement Gus reached down and helped her up. They quickly and quietly made their way to the armory. Gus tried to pick the lock but was having trouble. Lianna could hear someone approaching. "Want to hurry that up, we've got company." Gus stopped to listen but couldn't hear a thing. When he turned Lianna was gone, before he knew it she was dragging a human guards body and setting it out of immediate view of any company they may encounter. "Move", she said as she pushed Gus out of her way so she could view the lock. She pulled two bobby pins from her hair and within seconds the lock gave way.
As she slid the door open it startled Gus, "damn chica where did you learn to do that so fast??" Lianna simply smiled and tossed Gus an empty duffle bag she found. She began to fill a duffle bag of her own. Within Minutes the two bags were filled, "alright wait here, I will go get the medical supplies."
"Are you sure you don't want me to go with you, actually what floor is it on?"
"The sixth floor, why?" Gus looked at her confused.
"Just wait here and I will go find the supplies, what is it that you need?" Gus handed her a list and she smiled.
"Are you sure you can handle this?" Gus did not question her abilities necessarily, he just didn't want to see her get hurt for his group. She nodded as she ran out of sight. Gus waited patiently, she returned in about fifteen minutes with a large bag of medical supplies. "Damn that was fast!"
She smiled as she picked up one of the duffle bags they had filled earlier, "yeah, now lets get the hell out of here." They quickly made their way back down the ladder, through the tunnels, and back out the manhole they had come through earlier. When they reached the surface Lianna offered her hand to Gus, and shook it firmly. "It has been a pleasure, here are the medical supplies."
"Why don't you come with me. I live with a larger group but we are all like family. United by a common goal."
"Yeah, and what is that?"
"Rid the earth of this evil. You would make a great addition. Please?" He smiled as he tilted his head slightly hoping she would agree.
"What the hell...I've got nothing better to do." She smiled as Gus turned and took off running gesturing for her to follow. They quickly made their way to his hideout. As they entered she looked around and finally asked, "so how many of you are there?"
He smiled, "Come meet them." They entered into a large common room where everyone was gathered working on what looked like separate tasks. "Hey everyone! Can I have your attention please?" As everyone looked he continued, "This is....shit I never asked your name!" Everyone looked at him like he was crazy.
She simple just smiled as she stepped in front of Gus, "My name is Lianna." She dropped the duffle bag from the armory. "I helped Gus gather your supplies, and he asked if I would join the fight. What can I say I like killing these things so I agreed."
Gus smiled, "Yeah.." he laughed now, as he pointed around the room calling out their names, "Thats Dutch, Vasily but we call him Fet, Dr. Goodweather or Eph, Professor Setrakian and...where is Quinlan?" Gus looked around and didn't see him anywhere.
Setrakian answered, "he is out. He will return. It was a pleasure to meet you, but we have work to do. Come on, all of you back to work."
Gus smiled as he looked at Lianna, "Ignore him, he is just really dedicated to the cause. So am I don't get me wrong, I just do more of the fighting. Speaking of which, I could use some practice would you join me." She nodded and followed him into another room. It was warmer in this room so she quickly removed her jacket until she was only in a tank top. Her back was towards Gus and he could see the scars that crossed her back, then he noticed the burns around her wrists and a brand that sat right above it on her left wrist. "Damn chica, what happened to you?!"
Lianna turned to face Gus and smiled, "I survived."
"Survived what exactly?"
"If I share a secret with you, can it stay between us for a little while?" Gus nodded so she continued, "Believe it or not I am over a thousand years old. A man named Simon infected and cured me of this very disease that is plaguing New York. After 117 failed attempts he finally got it right. I have many of their abilities: sensational hearing along with unnatural speed and healing. He had me train day and night with soldiers and often had me test my abilities in the battle field...."
When she finally paused she looked and saw Gus's eyes wide. "Holy shit, I mean at this point nothing would surprise me. But what about the scars??"
"I was often named a witch for my life style. I walked amongst the light and the dark. I was unmarried and lived alone. The ones across my back are from being whipped, they wanted to make a show of me and would pull me out of my cell only to beat me. I eventually escaped. The brand was burned into my skin by a Lord, while awaiting my hanging I escaped again. The ones around my wrist were from when they attempted to burn me at the stake. As soon as my rope bonds gave way I ran for it. I hid from the world after that and only hunted at night."
"Shit chica if what you're telling me is true you have lived a fucked up life. You'd probably get along with Quinlan. I wonder when he'll be back."
Lianna smiled, "Well...less talk more training?"
Quinlan was on the other side of the door and heard almost everything about Lianna's past. She intrigued him, Quinlan had never met someone he could possibly have a real conversation with. He wondered how Simon had successfully cured her. He knew that Professor Setrakian would maybe know more, so he went to find him. He needed answers.
