~Chapter Five~
After the morning events Lianna hid away in the room, she found a book and buried herself in it. When early evening came she finally decided to put the book down and go see what Setrakian was doing, she no longer could occupy her own boredom. She did not want to be around anyone else in that moment, she knew that the Professor found it a waste to talk about anything other than the task at hand. When she found Setrakian he had his nose buried in the Lumen yet again. "Evening Professor."
Setrakian looked up from the book, "Fet filled me in on your history."
"...yeah...I am sorry I did not tell you all sooner. I believe Doctor Goodweather does not trust me now." Lianna walked closer as she peered over Setrakian's shoulder.
"The Master has taken much from him. He just feels like he has failed his family. He could have stopped this if he had only listened to me the night the plane landed."
"You mean he was there?"
"Yes, he had the chance to end it but he did not believe. He believes now." Setrakian looked at Lianna and noticed her interest in the papers before him. "I believe clues to how to kill the Master reside in this book."
"Are these pages what you have translated so far?" She picked up the pages to take a closer look. As she scanned the pages she asked, "anything stand out so far?"
"It spoke of the face of god, when the face of God shineth upon him, his essence is destroyed. We assumed this referred to the sun, but we already know that doesn't work it only weakens him. However, Quinlan believes the other ancients were killed by a nuclear bomb."
"Makes sense, a nuke creates a light as bright as the son when it goes off. But Professor where the hell are we going to get one of those." Lianna looked up from the papers as she heard Quinlan enter.
He walked in only a few steps and looked at the wall before making eye contact with Lianna, "may we speak." Lianna nodded and set the papers back down, she followed Quinlan out of the room. When he stopped Lianna approached him stopping a few feet away, he took a deep breath as he turned to face her. He sighed, "Thank you for earlier. But you should not have fed into him, he bated you."
"Excuse me?" Lianna was irritated by his last comment.
"I only mean you have lived long enough to know better. He just wanted a reaction from you." Quinlan saw as anger washed over her. "I did not mean to offend you."
"Well you did", she turned and retreated back to her room she did not wish to be lectured any further.
Quinlan did not move, you idiot why are you so bad at this? Why can't you just show her how you truly feel? He was so lost in thought he failed to hear Gus approach him. "Hey Quinlan, you know where Lianna is?"
"Yes, she went to her room", Gus went to leave, "can I ask you something?" Gus stopped and turned back around and nodded. "How do I show emotion?"
Gus laughed not because he thought it was funny but because he knew why Quinlan was asking. "She knows that you are rusty in displaying emotions. Just talk to her man", he said as he slapped him on the shoulder.
"I do not know what you are talking about", Quinlan did not understand how Gus could know of his feelings for Lianna.
"I see the way you look at her man. If she intrigues you then let her know." Gus knew he was right when he spoke he saw Quinlan's body language change. "You can relate to her unlike any of us, she would enjoy getting to know you as well, I believe." Gus and Quinlan continued to speak for while, Gus gave Quinlan some advice he hoped would help.
Lianna found Eph working on something at his work station. She stood in the shadows as she watched him work. When Eph noticed her he asked, "Can I talk to you", she did not answer but she did not leave so he continued, "I am sorry about what I said, I don't think you are a freak. I just said that out of anger. The Master has my son, I just want him back but I am worried about what state I might find him in."
Lianna caught that he only apologized about calling her a freak. "I am sorry about your son. You would not let me finish earlier, I do possess a notebook Simon gave me, all of his notes surrounding the procedure to stop the infection are in it. I will let you look at it on one condition..."
"...and what is that?" Eph smiled.
"Never call Quinlan a freak again, and treat him like you would anyone else. He is a strong ally and I would hate to see you ruin that. One day he may save your life."
As she spoke the smile on Eph's face faded, "you have yourself a deal. I guess his indifference just makes me uneasy. I don't handle the unknown very well, and there is so much about him I do not know or understand." Lianna nodded she left the room and returned a few minutes later and held out her hand. When he looked down he saw a old leather book in her hand. He was hesitant to take it, but eventually took it nervously from her hands. He hoped that he could replicate the procedure when the time came. "Thank you, you do not know how much this means to me."
Lianna smiled, "just remember our deal."
"I will."
Gus finished giving Quinlan some advice. Quinlan finally asked Gus the question that had been on his mind, "you two are not involved are you?"
"Man I wish, she is the most gorgeous woman I have ever seen. But no, I see the way she looks at someone else, she may not even realize it yet."
"Who", Quinlan never had competition if he wanted something he usually got it. This made him nervous, he was not sure if someone like Lianna could ever see someone like him in that way.
Gus just smiled, "You both are so blind. Neither of you even see it." Gus shook his head as he let out a small laugh, how could they not see it? Gus grabbed Quinlan's shoulder, "Just talk to her." As Gus let go he walked passed Quinlan and into the training room.
Quinlan could hear Vasily's loud voice as Gus entered. He stood there as he stared at the floor and wondered if Gus could be right, could Lianna really feel that way about me? Setrakian peaked his head out from the room, "Mister Quinlan can I speak with you?" Quinlan nodded and entered the room. Setrakian stuck his head out the door again and hollered out, "Gus please fetch Lianna for me I need to speak with her." Quinlan wondered what this could be about, night was coming and the eagerness in Setrakian's voice told Quinlan that whatever it was it was urgent.
