PAULINA GILBERT was born in Mystic Falls, Virginia to a very strict father and a loving mother that died with consumption when she was eighteen. It broke her, having to follow her father's rules and hear from all of her aunts about how she was never good enough to get a husband.

Every day they told her that it was an embarrassment to pass the age of twenty and still be searching for a husband before she finally broke through those rules and claimed that it was an embarrassment. That was why she was no longer searching. Simply she didn't want to carry anyone's family name but her own and Paulina never wished to be held back by some man.

It took her father a while to pass hearing that. A part of him wanted to support every decision of his daughter's but his sisters were always telling him about how oddly embarrassing she is and how she needs to be disciplined.

"I need to be disciplined because I don't want to be a housewife? I will tell you what needs to be disciplined, your entire society, grandma."

Paulina had one motive from that day on, prove anyone that called her some rebellious girl that will soon follow the rules how wrong they were. She never had anyone believe in her or her unusual ideas of a woman having more rights than just marriage then one day...Charlotte Bernard came in the picture.

Paulina didn't want to befriend the oddly positive petite girl but Charlotte had so much hope and persistence, it was hard to turn her down. Charlotte believed in everything Paulina insisted on, simply because she knew how Paulina just needed someone to be there for her, to trust in her, to need her back.

And with Charlotte, came Angelina Forbes. An always smiling charity girl. She loved everything about life and being alive. Paulina couldn't think of a time where she was around Angelina and wasn't smiling, her blue eyes and wide smile always lit up the room.

Somewhere along the way, Paulina found herself needing Charlotte and Angelina more and enjoying their company. She defended those girls at any attempt, she became a part of their lives. They were friends, no, best friends.

Then Charlotte disappeared.
