I opened my eyes to the sound of a very annoying beeping sound. Bright light shined into my eyes. I heard someone's heavy footsteps walking around me.
"Where am I?" I groggily asked the person.
"You're at the WestView Medical Hospital," A female voice replied, "your car must've flipped six times. One of our county policemen will come in, to question you towards the accident in a few minutes, now that you're awake." A few seconds passed before she added, "My names Donny, your nurse for now." Th nurse walked around the bed so she can adjust the IV that was hooked up to my arm. She was a very small and slender woman, probably in her late 30's. Her light brown hair made her brown eyes look brighter and happier sending a whole new image to herself.
I tried sitting up but she quickly stopped me, "It's better if you don't sit up just yet, the trauma from yesterday could give you a lot of pain. You have broken your left leg and your shoulder is out of place..." she paused, looking a little nervous as she said, "and your car went up in flames giving you a mild...burn, I'm sorry."
Before I could process anything, both of my parents came in, when they saw that I was awake, they quickly ran to the bedside.
"Oh, sweety! We are so glad you are okay! We've been so worried when you didn't come home the other day!"
I gave a small smile to assure them that everything is fine, but the nurses words still hung in the air. The car went up into flames? I'm burned? Reaching up to my face, I could feel the rough texture of my skin. It hurt to touch that area.
Mom quickly put my hand down, "It's better if you don't touch that, it could hurt more."
I only now realized that my left leg was put up into a cast. "Mom, where Emmalee?" I asked while still looking at my cast.
"Um," She looked over at dad, "She's doing great, they released her from the hospital earlier today. She sort of explained what happened."
"Can you please explain in your words exactly what happened?" Dad asked, holding mom's hand.
"There's nothing much," I answered, "We left early, she was drunk so I drove."
"Paige, I don't think it's nothing much, how did you get into the accident?"
"I told you, she was drunk, so I drove, she grabbed my hand and I sort of lost control of the car. I don't know why she was drunk in the first place." I was difficult keeping my voice even. My parents tried not to notice my sudden change in behavior.
A man in a turquoise attire came in, carrying a clipboard. "Good afternoon Mrs and Mr. Connor! I am Dr. Tenor, Sadly, I don't sing very well, so please don't ask me for a solo," mom and dad smiled at that, the doctor continued, "I am a certified doctor here at WestView, making sure that girls like you get home faster," He smiled at me, I didn't say anything, "The bad news is, that since you only have a small burn and a broken leg, you will have to stay here a couple days so the nurses can check up on you to ensure that you're doing fine," He took out a few x-rays from his folder and held one up, "This is a picture of your leg, we predict that during your accident, with the pressure from the wheel and the glass, it must've crushed your leg bone in three areas after you hit the metal pole and flipped. If you're a girl who hates P.E. this might be a good thing,"
"I'm a ballet dancer," I interuppted him, "Is there still a chance that I can dance without this interfearing?"
The doctor looked at me with sympathy, "I'm afraid not, we wouldn't want you to break anything during your dance, and the bone's may not grow back properly, so you might have a limp to your step."
"A limp?!" I exclaimed without meaning too, mom had to shush me so the doctor can go on.
"Yes, I'm terribly sorry, but there's also good news," he showed a small smile, hoping he could lighten up my mood.
"What is it...?" I asked, if this can't lighten up my mood, then nothing will.
"Given your parents permission, we will bring you to a seperate room with a roommate. That will give you a more breezy stay at the hospital and prehapse, you might even make a new friend."
I looked at him, then at my parents, "Seriously?" I would have been fine being by myself anyway. The whole x-ray thing completly ruins my plan for a solo part. Espeically for recgnistion to a dance school. I had my hopes up for that. Now it's all lost. I can't believe I even went to the party. I should have just told Emmalee no.
"Sweety, I think it will be healthy for you. You two might become friends. It will help you cope with this better." Mom said, breaking into my thoughts.
"He's only a year and half older," Dad cut in.
"Wait, he's a guy?" I asked, fully paying attention now. Double great. Now they want me to fall in love? If I could seriously dance right now, I would have named my dance something like Fall of the Moon or The black Raven. I didn't feel like talking to anyone.
"He's the only one here around your age, unless you wanted to stay with a four year old who is in a more serious condition than you."
I rolled my eyes, "Fine, whatever," I'm not usually that snappy at everyone, but considering that this ruins my future, I don't think I'll ever smile again. No one understands how badly this hurts me as a person.
The doctor nodded his head, "Okay then, if you want to, we can move you there now,"
"Better now than later," I mumbled.
The doctor unclipped the IV and the cast as one of the nurses brought a wheelchair. Dad helped me get on and the doctor showed the way to the room as mom wheeled me down the hall. I just stared ahead. The thought of never dancing again stayed in my head. I can't believe I've been stupid enough to go to a party. Already, I could feel pain going up my broken leg.
Mom wheeled me into the room and dad helped me out onto a spare bed.
"Okay sweety, we'll go home now, the kids are home alone. Here's dad's phone if you need to reach us." Mom said, kissing my forehead.
"We also brought you books and other necessities you might need," Dad added, standing up and leading mom out the door. I didn't tell them bye, just a slight nod telling them that I'll be fine. When they left, I took that time to look around. The room wasn't very big. A curtain divided two sides and there was an empty bookshelf in one corner, both beds had monitors and a remote that can be used to position the bed the way you like it or to turn the TV on. Now that I noticed the other bed, I realized that no one was in it. The covers were made and the pillows were laid perfectly against the beds back.
Nurse Donny came in to turn on my IV. "The boy should be here soon, if you were wondering. He went out for some fresh air."
"Okay." I said, clearly not wanting any conversation.
As she was finishing up, another nurse came in, guiding a boy to his bed. He seemed to be only a few inches taller. His tousled shaggy brown hair was pointed in every direction. But that's not what bothered me the most, what bothered me was that a white cloth was covering his eyes. No one told me he couldn't see! I looked at the nurse but she only shrugged, gathered her stuff and left. I sighed, rolling my eyes. Left with nothing better to do, I watched the boy as the nurse helped him with anything else and soon also left. Leaving us alone. The boy just sat still. For a second, I felt bad for him, but then again, at least he still had a whole life ahead of him. Unless he's permantly blind, then maybe not.
I hadn't realized I've been staring at him until he said, "So what's your name? I figured I better say something, or you'll never talk."
I literally jumped, how did he know that someone else was in here? "Uh...I'm Paige, how did you know I was here?"
"Nice name, my name's Cody. I may be blind, but I can hear you, plus the doctor said you'll be here for a couple days."
"That's...cool." Duh, I've heard if you lose one of your senses, you gain another one, or you advance on one that you already have. Of course, I don't know if that's true or not, but hey, at least he's not deaf and his voice sounded rough and deep, I kinda wanted to hear him talk again. I mentally smacked myself, I better quit thinking of him like that if I wanted to get out of here alive.
"You can talk you know, I don't bite," Geez, he must be that talkative one.
"I know, I just don't know what to say,"
"You can say anything, here, I'll start first," he cleared his throat, "What school do you go to?"
"WestSide High."
"Really? Wonder why I don't know you,"
"Well, for starters," I rolled my eyes, "I'm a junior, maybe that's why."
"You're feisty, aren't you?"
I sighed, "I'm sorry, I'm not usually like this, I just..." I paused, all the anger boiled in me again, "this whole hospital is ruining my life!"
He chuckled, "Well, first of all, you don't have to bring out your anger on the poor hospital, what did it do to you to deserve your anger?"
"You know what I mean!" I snapped.
"Sort of, considering I'm also in this hospital, so tell me, why are you here? If you don't mind sharing."
"Got into a car accident. Broke my leg."
"That doesn't sound too bad," he stated. I'm starting to wish he could see, because this is sort of annoying.
"If you're a dancer, it's a big deal," I interrupted him.
"A dancer?" His blindfold went up a little, "What kind of dancer? Tap, ballet, tango, limbo?"
"Limbo?" I started at him.
He shrugged, "Maybe you're Indian, I don't know."
I just rolled my eyes again. I should really stop though, because my eyes are really starting to hurt. This new attitude is making me tired. "Ballet. Now that I got into an accident, I can't dance anymore." It was hard not to let my voice give away my broken heart. Especially since I barely know him.
"Oh, I'm truly sorry then. How did you get into the accident?"
I sighed, "Is this 20 questions or something? My friend was drunk after a party. I drove and she sort of spooked me which made our car fly off the road." He seemed a little hurt by my remark. I tried not to let the guilt show.
"I apologize with all the questions. I really shouldn't have asked." He just continued to sit there, silent.
"Why are you here?' I asked a little softer than I was before.
Cody smiled as if he remembered something, "Did a stupid experiment with a couple friends of mine with some chemicals without eye protection."
"That really was stupid of you," I agreed.
"Well it was fun while it lasted."
I shook my head, what is up with this guy? Isn't he the slightest bit worried about his future? Like come on. "You really are weird." I admitted after a while.
"I guess you don't know me well enough yet," he grinned.
I don't think I want to, I thought to myself.
The next few minutes, we didn't say a word. So I just took out my book that dad brought me and started reading. The silence felt amazing. I know I sound mean for saying it, but the silence really did suit me. The rest of the time we were quiet. The nurses came in to check up on us. Our blood pressures and what not.
The only other short conversation we had was a quiet good night before we both fell asleep on these uncomfortable beds.
