Chapter Six
Am I doing this?
Am I doing this?
Am I actually freaking doing this?
Those insane thoughts were the only sentences my brain could conjure up as I stared towards the night’s sky, its view blocked by a ginormous glass building, or should I say, The Shard.
I remember passing this abnormally large structure frequently, never stopping to take in just how tall it actually was. I watched them build it, fascinated with the large cranes and diggers, the bulky glass windows and the mass amount of concrete they poured into this beautiful architecture.
I never once thought I’d be trying to break into it.
“You are for real, aren’t you?” I squeaked as my eyes drifted towards Tim, who just happened to be currently lifting his hood onto his fluffy blonde hair, hair I wouldn’t mind running my hands through. Blushing at the ridiculous thought I just had, I listened as he answered.
“Of course, pull your hood up.” He directed, before quickly disappearing into a nearby alleyway. I just stared after him; mouth dropped open, most probably hoping to catch some flies.
Well, my stomach was rumbling.
He was made, completely and utterly mad. I thought he was innocent. I thought he was a cute, introverted, kind of guy. Not a freaking dare devil who likes to break into, most probably, a very well guarded piece of London. He was nuts. He was of his rocker, he was-
I screeched.
My heart began throbbing as a dark figure emerged directly in front of me, their dark outline overtaking any other site, their unknown breath merging with my heavy breathing, only an inch apart.
“Rayne,” Tim’s voice whispers as a soft hand covered my mouth, his eyes finally protruding out of the dark figure, wide and glistening. He was trying to tell me to be quiet. “Please keep it down.” Rolling my eyes, I slapped out and hit him in he arm, he let go of me immediately with sigh.
“Don’t do that,” I hissed at him, the way he appeared was all too similar to him, and I was trying to forget him. “You scared me half to death.” I shot out, anger lingering in my voice, my eyes darting back and forth between his glowing orbs. My brain was on high alert now, I couldn’t seem to get the image of a dark figure away, it was too similar to the ocean, to similar to the dark that overtook my eyes when I was only five years old, drowning in the cold water.
My body began violently shaking, my teeth chattering, echoing around the empty space outside of The Shard. Two fingers clicked in front of my eyes, but my brain ignored them, all I could hear was the laugh.
His laugh.
I began shaking harder, my whole body swaying back and forth, my eyes were wide trying to draw in as much light as I could, I hated the dark. I probably looked possessed, crazy…insane.
Rayne, Rayne, Rayne.
“Rayne!” A hard voice snapped me out. My face was cradled between to hands, Tim’s hands. I began to realise that it wasn’t me shaking; it was Tim, rocking us back and forth, comforting me. He was counting, one, two, one, two, my breathing began to follow the numbers, in at one, out at two.
Finally my heart rate fluttered down to normal, my body calm as it soaked up Tim’s heat, our arms and legs tangled together as he glued me back together, whispering encouraging words.
“It’s okay, it’s okay.”
No it’s not, no it’s not.
Ignoring the negative side of my brain I nodded, slowly retracting from his embrace I planted a smile on my face.
“I’m sorry,” I spoke, “I-I’m just worried, that’s all.” I lied straight out, that gnawing feeling of hatred within me practically tearing at the seams, angry that I wouldn’t tell my saviour the truth.
“It’s okay,” Tim sheepishly grinned at me, “we don’t have to go up-” I cut him off with my hand.
“Yes we do.” I needed to do something; I wanted to keep my mind occupied, away from him. Gripping Tim’s hand I led him back into the alleyway.
Sneaking into The Shard would be hard but it was exactly what I needed, a distraction.
Pulling my hood up, we headed of towards the dirt ridden dustbin at the back of the alley, which was oh so coincidently under an open window. Our footsteps were light as we finally reached the tin full of unwanted garbage.
“You first.” Tim slyly smiled, pointing towards the window. Snorting, I knew exactly why I had to go first.
“You just want to look at my butt.” I laughed, before hoisting myself up onto the bin and trying to gain some balance, the light sound of chatter reached my ears. I looked down at Tim, panic in my eyes and silently lifted my finger to my lips; he nodded, understanding my indication that we had to be quiet.
Lifting my hands to the edge of the window I made sure I had a strong grip before using all my strength to pull myself up. My chest scraped against the building before finally I managed to get my knees onto the windows ledge. Letting out a quick breath I stuck my head into The Shard.
The hallway was completely empty. The small voices I heard must have walked past by now, oblivious to the fact that two eighteen years olds were about to commit one massive crime.
Clambering over as quietly as possible, I landed with a muffled thump. Sending a quick thumbs up out the window giving Tim the all clear, I headed into the deserted hallway.
I suppose sneaking into a glass building with lovely shiny floors was a stupid idea, but what made it worse, I was wearing my noisy shoes. You know, the ones that squeak at every chance they get, creating a teeth-clenching friction that sends shivers into your body. Yes, those ones.
My shoes amplified the loudest sound they could muster.
“Crap.” I whispered before beginning to mumble profanities to myself. The sound of shouts echoed around. “Double crap.” I groaned before taking off away from the heavy footsteps, which seemed to be running in my direction.
I rounded many corners, sliding around them and at one point almost toppling over a mop that had been left leaning against a wall. I could hear the guards getting closer every time, I hoped they hadn’t caught Tim.
Oh dear God I forgot Tim.
Groaning, I jumped around another corner almost letting out a squeal as I came to a sudden halt. Two security guards clad in white shirts and black trousers stood, backs facing me, a mere metre away. If I made a single sound they would turn around, grab me and then send me to jail.
I was too young to go to jail.
Frantically I looked around, my heart almost jumping out my chest as I spotted an unmarked door hidden behind a wet floor sign. Gleaming I tiptoed over there, careful to avoid the water which lay under the yellow piece of plastic. Gratifyingly as I reached out to turn the doors handle it clicked open without much sound, finally something was going right.
“Get back here!” a voice bellowed in the distance. I shot open the door and flung myself inside, no clue to what was hidden within its depths. The door shut with a bang, but I breathed a sigh of relief as I heard the guard’s footsteps run past.
“There is a blonde, girl running amuck.” One spoke out.
“Find her.” Another announced.
Finally, their footsteps drowned out into the distance leaving my breathing to calm down. Slowly I turned around, my eyes catching on the cleaning products that lay around me. I was in a closet full of dusters, great; there goes my hay fever.
“No way.” I breathed out as my eyes finally caught on something other than window cleaner. Although shiny, my newest point of interest was the metal doors of an elevator. Above it a sign, so beautiful, shone with clear intent.
Ground Floor.
“It must go to the top.” I laughed out. How had this happened? By sheer terror nd coincence I had found mine and Tim’s ticket to the top of The Shard.
Tim.
How did I forget him? Again.
A Clattering sound had my head whipping back towards the door that had flung open, a heavy breathing figure stood in its frame. Their eyes glued to mine, anger willowing beneath them.
Speak of the devil.
“You left me.” Tim’s out of breath voice wafted over to me before he finally shut the door and stalked towards me.
“S-sorry,” I stuttered, “they were going to-,” His laughter cut me off, idiot. Rolling my eyes I ripped his hand away from his mouth and he tried to stifle the laugh. “Stop it, come on.” I snapped at him before pulling him to the elevator.
“Is that-” I cut him off with a sharp nod. Grinning I watched as he clicked the button next to the silver doors and with a ding they opened.
“The closet!” A voice echoed in the background. I looked at Tim, my eyes wide with dread. They had found us. Bumbling in I clicked the top floor button; clicking again and again as the security guards voices grew closer.
“Come on, come on.” Tim urged, furiously trying to click any other button that would let us get away.
I let out a huge sigh of relief as, finally, the doors to the elevator closed and the mechanical sound of gears drawing us up into the sky, began.
“We did it.” I screeched, creating an unknown dance as I fluttered my arms around, almost knocking into Tim. He was grinning as he caught my arms and tried to calm me down.
“Yeah we did,” He laughed, before we both collapsed on the floor, repressing giggles the whole way to the top floor.
As the elevator doors rang open we found ourselves stumbling out into another cleaning cupboard. I watched as Tim ignored the masses of bleach that surrounded us and headed for the door, quietly opening it up a crack.
I watched as a small line of light lit up the small room before being shut off quickly.
“It’s clear,’ Tim stated, turning back to me, “You ready?” He asked. I smiled before walking up to him.
“Never been more ready.” I laughed as he opened the door into an empty stairwell, as small sign on the wall opposite pointed upwards, clearly labelled with ‘The viewing Gallery’.
We had made it.
Running out, Tim and I headed up the small flight of stairs before bursting into another room. Heads turned towards our direction, quickly looking away from the mouth-dropping views, before turning back, ignoring the two teenagers that had erupted into the glass room.
Not knowing we hadn’t paid for the experience.
“Wow.” Tim whispered, his eyes drawing towards the view. I nodded following him towards the glass. I dropped down on the floor, legs crossed as I leant my head against the cool glass. I never looked away.
We must have been there for a couple of hours, just watching the city lights. Cars below zoomed by, but their lights seemed to move slowly as they travelled along London’s roads. Houses going to sleep, rooms awakening at different hours, you could even catch glimpse of people shadows behind closed curtains. The view was breath taking.
“I know.” Tim’s voice broke through the silence.
“Huh?” I asked, unsure as to what he was on about.
“You said it was breath-taking, I agreed.” He smiled at me. I didn’t know I had said that out loud. Laughing I clambered up, my limbs protesting after not moving for a while. Tim followed suit, clasping my hand in his, as he finally stood tall. “I know something that can beat this view.” He spoke with such confidence.
Turning towards him, I smiled.
“This is pretty incredible, whatever it is must be special.”
“She is.”
My heart stopped as my eyes locked on his. I couldn’t tear them away; Tim’s own was slowly absorbing them, capturing them in a steel grasp. I felt my body swaying towards him, almost as if we had connecting magnets. His head slowly, almost unsurely, leaned towards mine. This was it, my first kiss with Tim, and my first kiss ever.
“Got you!” A voice bellowed. Jumping apart my heavy breathing never faltered as we watched the security guard grasp us in his large hands, pulling us out and away from the view.
But as I stared into Tim’s wide eyes, I couldn’t help but laugh. We had managed to sneak into The Shard, and then almost two hours later we were thrown out.
Banned from The Shard.
