THE HOLIDAYS were fast approaching, and Jade wasn't entirely sure what to do for most of her gifts. Terry normally wanted hair products, but, considering it was just starting to grow back, she figured that wasn't a good idea. She knew Mandy wanted the special edition of Magical Me that had just come out, and Michael wanted colorful ink.
Luna, however, was a whole new story.
Every time she attempted to ask her what she wanted, she refused to answer, giving Jade no insight on gifts. It was hard to pick out something for her, as there were too many questions. Should she be unique? Should she get something practical? Should it be hand-made? If it was hand-made, she wasn't sure what to make. Her mother made soaps and balms back home, so she could send her an owl to request a few in Luna's favorite scent, but she didn't know if she would like that.
She decided to do it anyway.
The first step was to get Luna's favorite scent. Since she had been ignoring Jade's questions, she decided to ask Ginny, who was the closest person to Luna besides her.
In the Great Hall, during breakfast, Jade ran over to the Gryffindor table and sat in between Hermione and Ginny, making both of them jump.
"What's up, Jade?" Ginny asked, holding her hand over her chest as she calmed down from being frightened.
"Do you know what scent Luna likes?"
Ginny shook her head, her lips in a thin line.
"I'm sorry Jade, I have no idea."
She turned to Hermione, who also shook her head no, her brown curls bouncing around. Jade sighed, standing up slowly from the table and dragging her feet back towards her table. As she sat down, she felt eyes on her, so she lifted her head and found Mandy staring at her
"Why're you looking depressed? I thought things were alright cause you're in looooove." She drawled, letting out a small high pitched laugh.
"That's my problem," Jade answered, sounding exasperated. "Luna won't give me any idea for Christmas presents, and I'm stressed."
"Get her some fancy parchment, she seems like she'd like that."
"Mandy, she's my girlfriend. I need to get her something better. I thought about getting my mother to make her a couple soaps, but I don't know what scents to get."
Mandy let out a loud "hmm", and began tapping her chin with her index finger.
"You look absolutely ridiculous."
She smiled, yet still continued to tap her finger on her chin. Jade noticed her nails, which were painted a bright red color, and opened her mouth to speak. However, Mandy blurted out an answer to her first question.
"Lavender!" She exclaimed, clapping her hands together. "Everyone loves lavender."
"I thought about that, and she does seem to like flowers."
"Perfect, send your mom an owl today and let her know."
After breakfast, and her classes, Jade found herself sitting in the Common Room on the blue couch, trying to write a quick note to her mom. Soon enough, she felt a presence sit next to her, with the couch cushion sinking in a small bit. Out of her peripheral vision, she saw long, platinum hair, and knew immediately who it was.
"I'm trying to write my mom about your Christmas present."
"How's that going for you?"
"The present shopping or the writing? Neither one is working in my favor currently."
Luna moved in closer, putting her head on Jade's shoulder. Just like the first time they began to get closer to each other, Jade felt butterflies in her stomach. It wasn't like they hadn't put their arms around each other, or had their heads on the other's shoulders, but she still felt the anxiety she had the first time they had ever done anything romantic.
It felt good to still be in the honeymoon phase.
"You seem tense." Luna broke the peaceful silence Jade had been sitting in.
She was tense, her shoulders had hunched up and her foot was tapping the brick floor rapidly. She shook her head, some of her curls hitting Luna in the face, and pulled the parchment off the table in front of them.
"I'll figure out what to get you, I promise."
"Jade, I'm not worried about it, why do you think I haven't told you anything?"
Jade sighed and folded the parchment, signing the top of it with her name.
"I still want to treat you to something special."
Luna sat up, staring at her. She could feel her gray eyes piercing her skull, so she turned to look at her.
"Jade, I don't care. I don't need anything, honestly."
"Well, you're getting something."
The next day, on the trip to Hogsmeade, the final one before Christmas, Jade required Mandy's assistance to distract Luna so she could buy candy from Honeydukes. She knew Luna loved Sugar Quills and Chocolate Frogs, so she made sure to grab the most of those. After that, she grabbed three Acid Pops, remembering the day she asked her out before going to the Hog's Head.
God, she had been incredibly nervous that day. She could barely think, and barely even eat, but she still made it through enough of the day to have Luna ask her out.
She was even more nervous today, trying to pick out the perfect presents for Luna.
After picking up a couple more items, particularly five Cauldron Cakes, and checking out, Jade found Luna and Mandy waiting outside, chatting on the bench. At her arrival, all conversation stopped and they turned to look at her and the awkwardly large bag of treats she carried in her right hand.
"Having fun?" Mandy asked, laughing to herself.
The three of them walked around Hogsmeade together, until Mandy split from them to buy a new cauldron at Ceridwen's. She had insisted on them not waiting for her, so they wandered until they stumbled into Scrivenshaft's Quill Shop.
Inside, Jade found all the ink she needed for Michael. There was gimmicky rainbow ink, purple ink, even ink that could only be read at nighttime. She bought five pots, four for Michael and one pot of black ink for herself, and waited for Luna to make her purchase. She grabbed a new quill from a shelf, a pot of red ink, and paid.
As they began their travels back to the castle, they caught up with Mandy, who had located Terry and Anthony. Jade had asked her mom to make a soap for Anthony too, as he loved her products, so she knew that would cover him. Luna was still a struggle, but she had finally worked out a plan.
Time passed and, slowly, Christmas gifts were handed out. Michael got his ink, Mandy got her new book (and cried), Anthony got three bars of soap, and Terry received a plentiful amount of Sickles and Galleons, so he could buy whichever hair products suited his needs best. The day before everyone began their journey home for the holidays, Jade and Luna agreed to exchange presents.
They met in the old classroom they had shared a while ago, when she told her about Terry's issues, and handed each other presents. Luna's were beautifully wrapped in shiny purple paper, and one was decorated with a curly red bow.
"Save that one for last." She told her, pointing at the one with the bow.
Luna opened her gifts first, receiving all the candy Jade had purchased, as well as a few bars of lavender soap. The final gift was something she had been working on for a long time, a new pair of flats, custom painted by Jade herself. They had been black, but, after using a bleaching spell, she painted them blue with little red tulips.
"These are absolutely amazing, thank you so much, Jade."
Watching her gray eyes move up and down the shoes and the look of happiness on her face made Jade fall even more in love with her.
Inside Jade's presents, she found a lot of candy, as well as two brand new quills.
"For all the times you have to write back to your mother." Luna joked, picking up one and tickling Jade's nose with the end of it.
"She always wants a response, I can't help it." She replied, playfully swatting away the quill.
The final gift, the one with the red bow, took the cake.
Inside was a neatly folded dress, with white buttons down the middle. There was no collar, and there was a square neckline. The sleeves had a small bit of white trimming on the ends, and it looked like it probably fell around knee length on Jade.
The best part, however, were the red tulips decorating the entire dress.
"I found it in Hogsmeade." Luna said quietly, unfolding the dress and motioning for Jade to stand up.
They placed the dress against her, trying to judge how well it would fit.
"It looks perfect." Jade whispered, taking the dress from Luna and admiring it.
She ran her hands over it, undoing and redoing the buttons, and played with the white trim on the sleeves.
"Thank you, Luna."
She didn't answer immediately. Instead, she leaned in, and placed a small kiss on her lips.
"Merry Christmas, Jade."
