THE AIRY voice made Jade's heart skip. She turned around quickly, scaring Anthony and Terry, who were right next to her.
"Luna!" Jade exclaimed, making eye contact with the platinum blonde.
"I knew it was you Jade. I'm so happy to see you!" Luna pulled her in for a hug, one that wasn't as tight as Mandy's, but it still felt nice. She had thin, tiny arms, and her touch was very delicate.
Jade could not believe how amazing the hug had been. She was on cloud nine even after Luna broke the hug, who adjusted her Butterbeer cap necklace and smiled at Jade. The two quickly moved off the train, trailing behind Jade's friends.
"Who are your friends? I know Mandy, but who are the other two?"
"The blond boy is Anthony Goldstein. He's usually very quiet, because he's an incredibly good and focused listener. You have to be a good listener to be friends with Mandy." Jade laughed, glancing at her best friend.
"Yes, she is quite talkative, but very endearing." Luna smiled again, watching as Mandy jokingly punched Anthony in the arm, yelling something about how Divination was the best class at Hogwarts.
"The other boy is Terry Boot. He's a big joker, but not as big as Fred and George Weasley. They're both in my year."
Jade watched Luna, who observed her friends intently. Her blonde hair kept falling out from behind her ears, covering her face, but that didn't keep Jade from admiring her beauty. She was certain at that moment that Luna Lovegood was an angel. She looked at the Butterbeer cap necklace, raising a thin eyebrow at the jewelry.
"What's the necklace for?" She asked.
Luna's hand shot up to the necklace, and she grabbed on to the cap closest to Jade.
"It protects me from the Nargles."
"What's a Nargle?" Jade was genuinely confused. Here she was, walking to Hogwarts, talking about a creature she had never heard of with the girl she was definitely falling in love with.
"They're mischievous creatures. They like to hide in mistletoe and they steal things, like my shoes. They always wind up missing, and I know the Nargles are usually to blame."
Though she believed Luna was making something up, she nodded in agreement. If she liked this girl, she would let her believe in what she wanted.
As they approached the carriages, Mandy looked back at the two girls and winked at Jade. Jade snorted, rolling her eyes at the ginger. Luna didn't seem to notice, instead being distracted by the trees surrounding Hogwarts. It was as if she was trying to find creatures in them, Jade noticed, with the way her gray eyes moved quickly from tree to tree as if something was jumping back and forth.
"Anything up there?" Jade inquired, climbing up into the carriage her friends were in.
"I think its Nargles, but I'm not sure." She answered, following her into the carriage.
Terry and Anthony stared at each other, then Luna, then continued to repeat the process. Jade glared at Terry, who stared at Luna in disbelief. He shrugged, mouthing "She looks weird" to her.
Luna didn't notice, much to Jade's relief.
She reached over and punched him square in the chest, making him lose his breath for a few seconds. She knew he could have said worse things, much worse things, about this girl, but he didn't. Maybe that's why she liked Terry so much, because he knew when not to be an ass to others.
"The thestrals look very lovely." Luna said, breaking the silence that had come over the carriage.
"Luna, what's a thestral?" Anthony asked, glancing at the area Luna was staring at. It was then that Jade noticed how wide her eyes were, and it was also then that she realized her eyes were a very pretty shade of gray. They looked like a gray cloud, the kinds you get when the floodgates in the sky are about to open.
They were the same color the sky was the day they met.
"They're gentle creatures, but many people don't like them because they're strange looking."
"I don't see anything in front of the carriage Luna."
"Have you seen anyone die, Anthony?"
His blue eyes widen, and he looked taken aback at the question. His eyes flicked back and forth between the three girls on the opposite side of the carriage, looked confused and quite terrified.
"N-no, I haven't seen anyone die." His voice quivered, like he was frightened of the harmless blonde fourth year across from him.
"That's why you can't see them pulling the carriage. You can only see thestrals if you've watched someone die."
Jade knew Terry and Anthony would confront her about this later, asking her why she was interested in such a nutcase. But they didn't know Luna had seen her mother die, they didn't know that she wasn't absolutely insane. Luna knew what she was talking about.
Jade knew Luna, and she would make sure her friends knew her too, really knew her.
These thoughts distracted her as the carriage continued its stroll to Hogwarts and the boys looked at Luna, flabbergasted at what she had just said.
