Wait like us

Zuko waited by the window while the sun was setting, the curtains were closed and lights were off as he only held the curtain open enough to watch outside. It was snowing now but his heart pounded in his ears.

That girl, Katrina or something, she's been done packing but they weren't going to leave yet, he just wanted to make sure it wasn't as chaotic out there.

The girl sat on the couch with her knees to her chest as she watched the news fearfully. He didn't pay attention to her, he had someone for the week if anything, worst comes to worst she might just be a good get away if they get in trouble. Small sacrifice.

"The snow is getting heavier," katara gulped seeing the news channel.

"Driving is out, no plow trucks to keep the roads clean," Zuko stood up and stood behind the couch to watch the news with her.

"It's been two hours, how long are we going to stay here?" Katara didn't bother looking at him. Her eyes felt dry from the few times she started crying, she began grieving for her brother and father, if they were dead... her eyes were puffy and red.

"Most people went to get out of the city, the traffic would've been suicide to sit there while more and more people die, this virus kills faster than it spreads," Zuko sighed a little and went to get himself a glass of water.

Until the power went out.

"Son of a..." he hissed and checked it phone, it worked but there was no service.

"What? What happened?" Katara flipped at the switch.

"Powers out, how much battery on your phone do you have left?" Zuko asked as he grabbed his lighter to make a little light.

"100 percent, I had it charging before," Katara went to go find flashlights.

"It won't do you much good with it, but save as much as you can, chargers are never going to work again with outlets that are out," he tsked checking his own phone. 30 percent.

He powered it off completely to save as much battery as he could.

"We should start moving, with power gone people are going to start raising homes for food now that refrigerators don't work," Zuko pulled his hoodie up and grabbed his backpack.

Katara tossed him a winter coat, gloves and a hat.

"Wha-" "don't call me dumb when you don't have any winter gear yourself," Katara frowned. "It's my dads stuff, he's been gone since summer,"

Zuko looked at it curiously and saw a military badge on the arm. He put it on anyways and was impressed by how heavy it was.

"Thanks," he nodded back at her as Katara braided her hair back and put a hat over her ears.

"We use to live in Alaska, I know how to handle winter," she pulled her dark blue winter coat over herself and grabbed her hiking boots.

"And now your in Wisconsin?" Zuko raised a brow.

"Military brat," she grinned a little.

"You don't sound so Wisconsin yourself, definitely not Midwest," Katara pulled her backpack on and clipped the front.

"I thought I pulled it off pretty well, Washington," Zuko nodded.

"You say some things off still," she zipped up her jacket and watched the boy curiously when he tightened his own boots.

"I lived in Japan a lot of my life, but I learned Japanese and English when I was growing up, just an accent," he explained and she looked at him curiously. Yet somehow they both ended up in Wisconsin, in Milwaukee.

"Well let's hope we know the city well enough to survive a little longer," Katara nodded.

"I think we'll manage," Zuko walked over and pulled her hood over her head and grabbed the gun.

"Got your gun and have it loaded?" Zuko asked.

She handed him her gun and ran back to her fathers room, the sound of their jackets echoed in the dark apartment and Zuko heard her pull out a case, a shot gun.

"I don't know how to use hand guns but I know how to use a shot gun, I went hunting a few times back in Alaska," Katara set the box of ammo on the bed and loaded up the longer gun.

"Sounds good to me, just be fast, I don't want to stay here much longer, I don't want something knocking on the door," Zuko unloaded her handgun and put it under his coat while he had his own gun instead.

"You mean someone?" She looked at him confused.

There was a loud sound against the front door making zukos heart drop sickly. Sounded like a body banged against it.

Zuko immediately cocked his handgun and pointed it at the door as he took deep breathes to hide the fear in his heart. He knew what was happening but now he had to face it.

"No, I meant something," he whispered wide eyes.
