Die like us
"Hey Katara I'm going to head to sukis to pick her up from the doctor appointment," a twenty-one year old dark tan boy with blue eyes grabbed his winter jacket as his twenty year old sister was making herself a sandwich for lunch.
"Her car broke down again?" Katara asked surprised.
"It doesn't do well in the winter," he grabbed his hat to cover his ears with. January's were always awful, gets to cold to go outside and worst for the cars.
"Then I'm showering before you come back and take all the hot water," she huffed taking her hair out of the braid. They lived in a three bedroom house above the city of Milwaukee, it was small enough for their family but with their fathers money and both teens having a part time job they can afford it while they go to college. Luckily they still had a few weeks of winter break left.
"Can you go to the store too and pick up some orange juice? And coffee creamer?" Katara asked quickly before he left.
"Yea, text me what you want for creamer and I'll let you know when I'm heading back," Sokka waved her off as he went outside and she nodded going to the bathroom.
Sokka turned on his truck and back out of the drive way as the snow began to fall lightly.
"Officials say that there will be a national lock down for citizen safety-" Sokka turned on some music not paying attention to the radio and drove down the road to get his girlfriend.
Katara sighed taking off her sweats as she heard her phone buzz, she glanced over seeing her father calling just as she started the water in the shower, she stood by the counter in her oversized tee that touched the top of her thighs and covered the back.
"Hey dad, what's up?" She answered letting hot water run through the pipes.
"Katara where's your brother?"
"He's out helping suki and getting some stuff from the store," Katara grabbed her towel from the closet and set it on top of the toilet for easy reach, procrastinating as she talked on the phone.
"He needs to pick up his phone, you need to go find him as soon as you can," Hakoda told her sternly making Katara raise a brow confused.
"Why, is he in trouble?" She asked.
"Listen I don't have much time, you find your brother and you stay with him, don't ever leave his side, I'm on the east coast but I promise I'm going to find you two-" the phone was cut off as Katara started to get nervous. Why did it sound so urgent? What was going on.
Katara tried to call the number again but it was disconnected.
"Shit," she hissed and went to call Sokka. It went to voice mail. She called suki and it went to voice mail.
"What the fuck?" Katara gulped getting scared.
Katara turned off the water went to her room debating on showering, picking up her clothes around her room instead while she waited for her brother to get home, she sent Sokka and suki texts to call her ASAP for an emergency.
She started a load of the wash and turned on her tv to listen to the news. Maybe there was a street shut down for an accident or a shooter again. Something bad was happening close by.
"Civilians all over the world-"
"-A virus that spreads through-"
"-it's killing elderly, children, healthy individuals within hours from-"
"Stay inside! Get home!"
"-DONT LET ANYONE YOU DONT TRUST IN YOUR HOMES!"
Kataras throat closed up as she watched wide eyes seeing covered bodies being lead through hospital halls in lines and even people putting up posters in their windows from all over the world, in different languages, all the same message.
This is it.
It's the end.
She didn't know why she was crying, Katara just found tears running down her face. If this was real, if this wasn't a joke, or mistaken or miscommunication from the world leaders... wouldn't you cry too?
Wasn't that something to cry about? To be afraid or already grieve of the life that was stolen from them?
She called her brother again.
"Sokka I need you to pick up your phone now, I'm scared and I need you, the news says you need to get home, fuck, I can't get ahold of dad," she covered her mouth with a shaky hand as she tried hold in a sob.
"Stay off the streets, as many are afraid it's once again lead to chaos in grocery stores and other essentials, chaos always creates violence,"
The tv cameras cut to people already panicking and fighting for Oreos and juice boxes, not even foods that were going to last them a long time or give them nutrients. It was pathetic.
Katara could hear yelling and banging outside her apartment, not on her door but close, her neighbors? She walked over to peak through the hole in her door and saw the family next door with their two children leaving with bags.
"H-hey what are you doing?" Katara opened the door and stopped in front of them. She completely forgot that she was wearing just her boyshort underwear and tee shirt but she didn't care in the moment.
"We're leaving," the husband scoffed at her as the wife, teenage daughter and young son stood behind with their bags.
"Didnt you see the news it's dangerous and the traffic-" "my son is sick, we have a bus to catch miss," he shoved her out of the way as Katara hit her back against the wall.
"Please just stay safe," the wife told her softly as she held her sons hand tightly, he looked pale and green with bloodshot eyes. Barely able to keep them open, he barely looked human. He looked almost dead.
"You too," Katara sighed going back inside.
She locked the door and rubbed her face. What was going on?
Only a few minutes later Katara heard yelling and screaming outside the apartment. It sounded like the mans... she went to the window to see if the family was in her sight, ready to call the cops from her phone but she let out a scream when someone started banging on her door.
"hey! Hey let me in! I need help!"
