Chapter 5- Laura
Trigger warnings - Swearing and student- teacher relationship mention.
We are seated in Mr Rogers office. By we I mean Jessica, Ryan, James and myself. I'm not entirely sure why the four of us are here but we are. Jessica is sat nearest the window, Ryan is beside her and has his feet resting on Mr Rogers desk. James is sitting on my left and I am nearest to the door which is currently behind me.
Mr Rogers finally comes in.
"Mr Jamison please remove your feet from my desk,"he asks. Ryan sighs and puts his feet down. James lets out a small laugh as he does this. Mr Rogers doesn't seem impressed. He continues to speak "as you were made aware in assembly this morning Mr Grey was murdered yesterday. The police believe that he was killed at some point between 4:30 and 5:30pm. Upon checking all of the security cameras the only four students who were in the school building between those times were the four of you."
Jessica gasps. "Sir, are you accusing me of killing a teacher" Jessica asks, sounding extremely offended at the thought.
"Not at all Miss Greenwood," Mr Rogers replies " I am simply informing all of you that only one of you four could have killed Mr Grey. No one else was in the school building except the staff and the staff would have had many other places and opportunities to take advantage of to kill Mr Grey."
We all sit in shock for a few moments.
It's Ryan who speaks first "you seriously think one of us killed him? Who cares who killed him anyway he was a shit teacher."
"Mr Jamison, do not swear in my office," Mr Rogers scolds. Ryan shrugs and slumps in his chair. Mr Rogers continues "so what I would like to know is why were you all in the school building between 4:30 and 5:30 yesterday evening? Miss Greenwood let us begin with you."
Jessica looks scared when Mr Rogers says her name. "I was talking to Mrs Gaskell, sir" she says.
"I will check with Mrs Gaskell to see if that was the case. Mr Jamison, how about you?" Ryan looks like he doesn't want to be here. He looks like he'd rather be at home.
Ryan sighs before he replies "I was in detention 'til 5 and after that Greenwood made me come up here and talk to you. James and Laura came in at about 5:30. I was here the whole time."
Mr Rogers seems unimpressed "please address staff members by their title Mr Jamison not just by last name. And you were not in detention the entire time you went to the bathroom. Mrs Greenwood tells me you were gone for over 15 minutes. Considering the bathroom is three doors away from the detention room I believe you will agree that your being gone for 15 minutes is rather suspicious. Now, Mr Jackson."
James sits up straight and looks at Mr Rogers. James explains "I was supposed to have detention with Mrs Greenwood..."
"Which you did not attend" Mr Rogers interrupts and James looks, I hate to say it slightly guilty.
"No," James says "I got distracted."
Mr Rogers folds his arms "distracted with what, Mr Jackson." James looks even more guilty as he continues "with watching Jessica."
"WHAT," Jessica exclaims in horror "why were you stalking me."
"I wasn't stalking you," James replies to her before turning back to Mr Rogers "she was in the cafeteria and I was watching her 'cause it seemed like she was waiting for someone. They never showed up. I hid behind the door to the cafeteria as Jessica left 'cause she started texting someone on her phone. When she walked past I saw that she was texting another boy."
I don't know why James just won't say who Jessica's dating. "Yes," Jessica replied, "I was texting my boyfriend." Mr Rogers looks angry.
"Miss Greenwood, could I look at your phone please" Mr Rogers asks, holding his hand out in Jessica's direction.
"No I don't want anyone else to know who he is" she says.
"Miss Greenwood whoever this mystery boy is I need to know that you have an alibi. Besides, if you say you were talking to Mrs Gaskell and Mr Jackson says differently I need to find out which one of you is lying." Jessica still doesn't hand over her phone. "Very well," Mr Rogers says "I will check the security cameras and I will see which one of you is not telling me the truth."
Ryan has been looking down at his lap for a while and I see now that he is deleting something. I watch him for a few seconds before Mr Rogers pulls my attention back.
"Miss Jackson what were you doing at the school yesterday evening?"
"I was in my room doing homework and I realised I forgot some stuff in my locker so I returned to the school building to retrieve those things from my locker. I decided to wait for James while I was here so I waited near the detention room until everyone except Ryan had gone. Then I came to the conclusion that James must have skipped detention. I left the school and went back to my room. Then I completed the rest of my homework." Mr Rogers sits down and writes for a few minutes in his notebook.
"Sir," I say and Mr Rogers looks up "I believe I can tell you who Jessica was texting."
Mr Rogers raises an eyebrow. "Really?" He says "Mr Jackson told you who MIss Greenwood's mystery boyfriend is?"
"Yes sir" I reply. James looks at me. I smile at him to try and reassure him that everything will be ok.
"Who is it?" Mr Rogers asks "who was Miss Greenwood texting? Who was she waiting for in the cafeteria?" James is still staring at me.
I ignore him and I calmly reply "Mr Grey." The whole room is silent. When the other three who weren't already aware of this situation have processed what I've said
Ryan is the first to respond "holy shit" is all he can think to say.
