Chapter 16- Jessica
Trigger warnings- Very mild swearing and drug dealing mention.
Ryan is back. I can't quite work it out. I don't know what James and Laura did to result in him being released but I am extremely angry that I knew nothing about it. They said we were in this together. That we'd work together to find the culprit and now they're going behind my back.
I asked them to meet me in the detention room on Wednesday morning and so now here we are. Wednesday the 29th of September and we are still none the wiser of who murdered Mr Grey. I hate to say this but I was sort of hoping that Ryan did actually do it. I know I know it sounds wrong but it's better than the alternative. That being that my mother actually did do it. I really hope that's not the case.
James pulls me out of my thoughts when he says "Mr Grey sent an email about our drug dealing to several teachers. Apparently most of them didn't believe him."
Ryan looks surprised "who did he send it to then?" James pulls out a sheet of paper.
It's a rather long list "most of the teachers," he replies "including Rogers and Greenwood he also sent it to Gaskell and Harris." We all look around at each other. Now we know that it has to be one of them.
"So how do we find out where they were during the murder?" Laura asks.
"We question them idiot," Ryan snaps "there's four of us and four suspects. All we need to do is ask them where they were last Monday between 4:30 and 5."
The others don't say anything so I do instead "but how do we decide who questions who?"
Ryan shrugs "easy," he says and reaches into his bag. He pulls out a piece of paper and a pencil and a plastic cup. He rips the paper into four pieces and writes one of the teachers names on each one; Rogers, Greenwood, Gaskell and Harris. Then he folds them twice and puts them in the cup.
He shakes it before he explains. "We can each pick someone's name out. Whoever you pick is who you question. We'll meet again at lunch to discuss what they said."
Once again James and Laura don't reply. They seem as if they'll do anything Ryan says.
"Ok I'll go first I guess," Ryan says when none of us volunteer to go first. He shakes the cup before he turns his head and pulls out a paper. He looks back and unfolds it
"Harris" he says bluntly.
James goes next and ends up with "Greenwood. Great."
I choose as Laura explains that she's too nervous to choose. I pull out a slip and end up with "Rogers. That means you have Mrs Gaskell." Laura doesn't seem to care.
"Ok," Ryan says "just ask them where they were last Monday between 4:30 and 5 and if they have anyone who can back them up on their alibi. That's it. We'll meet here at lunch." We all nod and leave to go about our day.
I go to Mr Rogers office at 10:30 during morning break. When I go in Mr Rogers isn't there. Neither is his secretary. The door to his office is open. I decide to take the opportunity to go in there to investigate. The only thing on his desk is a folded up piece of paper. I pick it up and see that it's handwritten. It says:
Meeting required to discuss RJ and his connection to EG possible evidence that he may have committed the murder has been found by the police. If this gets into the hands of the press this could be devastating for our reputation. Meeting required with RJ, JJ, LJ and JG to discuss the case and warn them off of speaking about it.
Signed RH
I can't think of any other teacher whose last name starts with H other than Mr Harris. I slip the note into my pocket just as a voice rings out behind me.
"Miss Greenwood, how can I help you?" Mr Rogers asks.
"W.. w..well," I stutter "I was wondering where you were last Monday when Mr Grey was murdered?"
Mr Rogers sits down at his desk "and why would that be of any concern to you?" He asks.
I reply quickly "Ryan said that the police officer mentioned that he wanted to question you about the case and where you were so I wanted to help in informing the police that I saw you in the place you were in at the time. Of course you wouldn't have done it sir."
Mr Rogers looks very pleased "thank you Miss Greenwood for your concern however the police are already aware that I was in my office when the murder took place. I knew nothing of the murder until my meeting with Mrs Greenwood and Mr Jamison was interrupted by the Jackson twins. I was nowhere near the science lab or Mr Grey. Is that all?"
"Yes sir" I reply and I get up to leave.
Mr Rogers says something else though before I do "I would be very careful about what Mr Jamison says there's more to him than meets the eye Miss Greenwood. You don't want to get too involved with someone like him."
"Yes sir" I say quietly and I leave before he can say another word.
When we meet again at lunch I tell the others what Mr Rogers says and I show them the note.
"That's pretty much all the evidence we need then" Ryan says.
"Why?" I ask.
"Well James and Laura found out that Gaskell and Greenwood didn't go anywhere near the science lab. Greenwood was in detention the whole time according to Greenwood and Ashley Carter who was in detention last Monday. And Gaskell was Giving Harvey Deacon a private session in the library. The librarian saw them and she never left until 5:15pm. Harris meanwhile had no clue where he was. He said that he was in the gym cupboard sorting out the equipment then he changed his story and said that he was giving Liam some extra training sessions. When I asked Liam, he said that was a lie. Therefore Harris has to be the guilty party."
"Then we need to confront Harris and find out if we're right" James says confidently and the rest of us nod in agreement.
"I know we're right," Ryan says, "but we still need to make sure." I'm not sure why Ryan is so confident as well. Mr Harris has no reason to frame my mother for this, but then none of them do. My mother is the nicest person I know she would never do anything to give someone a reason to frame her for murder. Would she?
