Chapter 12
Grays pov
I was starting to get impatient.
Wendy was leading us through the woods. We had been walking for hours and I couldn't help but feel like we were going in the wrong direction. Wendy had assured us all that Natsu's scent was strongest here but still.
"Wendy can you tell us how much further?" Lucy said whining. She was at the back of the group.
"I'm sorry Lucy but I'm not sure. We'll just have to keep walking until we find something." Wendy said panting. She was so much smaller then us, I have no idea how she was still walking.
"Ugghhg. My feet are about to fall off." Lucy complained.
"Lucy, we can't do anything about that. Keep moving." Erza said sternly. Lucy yelped and ran up to the front with Wendy.
"Yes ma'am." She said in a scared voice. I saw Jellal smile slightly. I felt someone grab my hand. It was Juvia.
"Gray-sama. Do we actually have a plan for when we find him? We don't know anything." Juvia said. There was a small silence.
"You're right. But we have to try. It will probably be an on sight plan once we know what we're up against." I said. I must have looked very said because Juvia squeezed my hand.
"Don't worry." She said smiling. I nodded. I looked up and saw Lucy smiling at us. She raised her eyebrows when we made eye contact. I looked away so no one could see my red face but I still held Juvia's hand. For some reason it gave my a comforted feeling.
-Zerefs pov-
I had been wandering the forest for a while. I couldn't tell what time it was because the sky was covered in dark gray clouds. It was going to rain.
There was a shaking in the bushes and a bunny hopped out. For some strange reason it crept closer and closer to me. I backed up.
"No. Get away." I said. This bunny was going to die. It just felt coming. It started nuzzling my feet. I closed my eyes and waited. All I could do was bring death to everything.
I opened my eyes and the bunny was still there staring up at me.
"Mavis?" I called out. Mavis stepped out of the bushes. She seemed to radiate light.
"Hi Zeref." She said smiling softly.
"I knew it was you because of the bunny." I said. She smiled and reached down and stroked the little rabbit.
"I thought she may cheer you up." She said smiling. I just stood there.
"Zeref you know I couldn't join you." Mavis said grabbing my hand. It sent a tingle through my body. "Fairytail is my home."
I was quiet. Mavis's smile vanished. She stared at me.
"What did you do to Natsu." She asked me. I sighed.
"400 years ago my mom gave birth to a baby boy. She named him Natsu. He was my younger brother and I loved him. We were a happy family and the next few years were the best in my life. My dad was a magic scientist and was always inventing new spells. My mom stayed home with us. Everything was great. Then, at the age of six, Natsu was killed by a dark group of mages who were looking for my fathers research. They ended up killing my mom as well. I was so angry and sad. I became quiet and wouldn't talk to anyone. My dad was so grief stricken he ended up killing himself when I was 10. I was alone in the world." I said. I looked at Mavis and saw her face had softened. She nodded and I continued my story.
"I turned to magic. I would spend days at a time studying a spell. I learned quickly except for one. The spell my father had been working on before he died. I tried so hard to figure it out. He was trying to make a spell to bring people back to life. It was unnatural and complicated and I obsessed over it. After around a year of researching I finally found out what to do. I went to the grave where Natsu was buried and performed the spell. Nothing happened and I thought it hadn't worked. I was so angry I just ran. I kept running until it was night and I was somewhere in the forest. I slept there that night and in the morning I was woken up by Natsu. He was actually standing over me with big eyes.
-flash back 400 years-
I felt someone shaking me and I slowly opened my eyes. I couldn't believe what I saw. My little brother was staring at me with big eyes.
"Why are you sleeping out here Zeref?" Natsu asked. Emotions flooded through my body.
"Natsu!" I shouted and hugged him tightly. Tears were running down my cheeks. I just sat there hugging him. I was happier then I had ever been in my life.
-end of flashback-
"I thought everything was going to go back to normal. But weeks passed and I realized that Natsu was different. I figured out that he was a demon. I hadn't brought my brother back to life. I had created END. I started to notice Natsu having fits. He would scream out in pain. After a while it happened every time he was awake. The pain only stopped when he was sleeping. I didn't know what to do, and I could watch him in pain. So I took him out to a cave in the middle of nowhere. I put a sleeping spell on him. In his sleep he wouldn't grow older. I decided to keep him there until I could figure out to help him. But I couldn't. Weeks turned into months. Months to years. I eventually found something that may help. I went to the cave and performed a spell that would bind all the evil in an object. I used a book and it became the book of END. It's his life source. I then let him sleep. He was woken up by a dragon 400 years later with no memory of anything. Some how the book is leaking his power out causing him to return to demon form." I finished. (Ok so I know that's not the real story but I just decided to make one up(:)
"That spell. It sounds exactly like fairy light." Mavis said. I looked down at her.
"It is." I said.
"Zeref Fairytail is going to get Natsu back. You know that right?" Mavis said. "Why did you put ideas of power into his head?"
"I'm so incredibly tired." Was all I said. Mavis grabbed my other hand and faced me head on.
"You're hoping Natsu will become strong enough to actually kill you. Is that right?" Mavis said. I nodded. Mavis always seemed to know what was going on with out being told.
"Mavis, I've been alive for a long time. I've seen the world go through wars and all the pain and heartache. Lots of times I'm the reason behind all that suffering. I just want to sleep." I said. There was a silence. The wind blew through the trees causing leaves to fall. The grass by my feet began to die. It started spreading. The trees started to wither. I was too emotional.
"I have to go." I said and quickly turned around. I felt Mavis wrap her arms around me from behind. I just stood there.
"Don't worry Zeref. We'll find a way for you to sleep soon."
