[C.3] The Book

• L I S A ' S  P. O. V •

The next day, the majority of the students were buzzing about Seulgi unnie's sudden disappearance, because at this age I guess you really couldn't help but let your curiosity win you over.

Maybe because we three were all preoccupied with the book we weren't really able to visit the library like we usually do, and the last time we saw her was when we borrowed the book then days later which was our next visit, she's suddenly gone without saying as much as a word to anyone not even to the principal. But I heard that they found a replacement surprisingly fast enough which explains the scene that greeted us yesterday.

"Go get 'em, you troublemakers."

Those words were said to us three in a playful manner when we complained about our academics to her, we were going to head home after borrowing the book when she cheered us on for our exam which was scheduled for the next day, but we would have never thought that they were going to be her last spoken words to us since she disappeared.

"Where could she possibly go?" Chaeyoung's voice pulled me out of my thoughts.

"I don't know, but it must be a very urgent matter for her to leave without saying a word." Jisoo unnie guessed.

"It's only been a day but I already miss her." I said as I slumped further into my seat. The three of us really grew close to her since the first day she was assigned to be one of the school librarians, so it was a shame that we won't be able to see her for a while, heck we weren't even sure if we'll ever see her again judging by the way she just suddenly disappeared.

"Yeah, me too." The two of them said in unison with the same saddened tone.

"Kim Jisoo, Park Chaeyoung, and Lalisa Manoban!" Our teacher's voice boomed throughout the classroom causing the three us of to sit straight up. I was sure we looked like we were hit by a lightning bolt by how fast we straightened back up on our seats.

Well woops, I genuinely forgot that we were even in class. "Is that matter very important that you talk about it instead of listening to my class?" Ms. Lee firmly said with a raised brow as she now faced our direction, hands on her hips.

Oh no, we triggered her. She was using that tone and plus she was doing the whole hands on hips thing, so I know that this won't end well.

"We're sor—"

"No, I'm not having any of that. You three have been talking for a while now that I couldn't let it slide anymore."

Is this leading to what I'm thinking about? Wait no, no, no, please no—

"Detention." Ms. Lee's dreadful words cut my thoughts off.

My eyes widened, come on no fair! We don't usually act like this in class but Seulgi unnie's disappearance just can't seem to leave our poor minds alone no matter how hard we try. We got carried away and got a little loud so okay, I admit that we have our faults but was she only looking at us? Other students were literally talking too.

Of course I decided to keep that last thought to myself though, I really don't want to trigger Ms. Lee more because she honestly looked like she could impersonate that one red character from Inside Out by the way she was restraining herself from exploding, one wrong move and we'll probably receive an even worse punishment than detention.

Well looking at the bright side at least we saved some of our classmates from suffering the same fate as us, because those who were also previously talking kept their mouths shut now.

"We'll continue later." Jisoo unnie whispered to me and Chaeng before averting her attention back to Ms. Lee's class.

The both of us nodded, Chaeyoung then also fixed her eyes back on the blackboard, while I placed my chin on my propped hand on the table before secretly huffing in frustration. I really needed to stop thinking about unnie for the time being, it even prohibited me from thinking about the whole book situation.

A few more minutes later, Ms. Lee finally ended the class, of course without forgetting to remind us about our detention which unfortunately means we won't be able to attend our next class which was Music.

Which also happened to be one of our favorite subjects.

So yeah, that was a bummer. Just great.

Fate really had to deprive us from attending one of the classes that we actually like. See, the three of us really liked to sing, we even spend most of our weekends in our dorm dancing to songs and singing to our heart's content, it's a lucky plus that Chaeyoung knows how to play multiple instruments.

So I repeat, it was a bummer.

After apologizing to our teacher once more, we finally proceeded to enter the detention room and found it empty—Oh scratch that, there was already one person sitting on one of the chairs, crossing her arms. When the lone person in the room finally noticed our presence, she turned her body towards us and as her eyes landed on our figures, her eyebrows raised.

"I'm gonna be honest, you three are the people I least expected to see here." Jennie nonchalantly said. Why isn't she being mean like always? Wait, was she poisoned? Did somebody perhaps kidnap the real her?!

Okay too far, Lisa. Stop being extra.

"Did you eat something weird lately?" Jisoo unnie asked Jennie with a tilt of a head, I know that she was genuinely confused and surprised, and that she didn't mean anything bad behind it but I can tell that she immediately regretted saying those words when she saw the expression on Jennie's face shift to a more stoic one.

"Fine, let me rephrase that," Jennie rolled her eyes. "What the hell are you three doing here? Are you somehow lost?" She continued sarcastically.

"I'm sorry I didn't mean—"

"You're fine, Jisoo. You can all go to your seats now." Jennie cut Jisoo unnie off as she turned to face the front once again.

"And here I thought I was about to make some genuine friends." Jennie whispered begrudgingly to herself, but we were the only ones in the room so of course it was loud enough for us to hear. Okay, Jennie really knows how to make people feel guilty because Jisoo unnie sure looks like it right now, her head hanging low was an obvious evidence of it. But she can't really blame us though, considering this was one of the few rare times where she's not throwing insults at us.

We glanced at each other and sighed, before quietly taking our own seats just behind Jennie.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean it that way." Jisoo unnie told her apologetically, her voice thankfully breaking the uncomfortable silence hanging in the air. "It's just that. . ." She hesitated a bit before continuing.

"We're not used to you acting like. . .this, to us you know?"

Jennie puffed out a breath, and out of habit I really expected her to spit toxic words out, but no, she just shrugged.

"I know."

With the way her front was still not facing us and is exhibiting no movement whatsoever, it was a glaringly obvious sign that it was the end of our conversation.

Jennie's attempt at trying to approach us (normally) failed due to our cautiousness, so it resulted into turning the room painfully tense.

The teacher going inside the silent room after a few minutes made me sigh heavily and close my eyes in relief.

"I'm hungry! Please give me food!" Lisa complained. She even prolonged the last word in her sentence and clutched her stomach in a very exaggerated way as if to show to her friends how devastated she was.

Jisoo and Chaeyoung shook their heads in resignation as they held their empty trays, as the famous meme they randomly found on the internet once said, they were disappointed but not surprised by their youngest's behavior.

And the fact that they were surrounded by a plethora of students that were probably eyeing her like she had a few screws loose just gave them even more reasons to act like they didn't know the tall girl at all. Well, Lisa is in fact—for the lack of a better word—a crackhead, but the people waiting in line with them didn't need to know that.

"Yah! Stop complaining it's our turn soon!" Jisoo whisper shouted at the girl as she warily glanced at all the eyes staring at them.

Thank God that Lisa did indeed stop and just resorted to pouting, but it was soon immediately replaced by a blinding smile that can rival the brightness of the sun because well, food. When they finished picking their respective dishes up, they made their way to their usual table, only to find someone already sitting there.

"Jennie? Why are you sitting there?" Jisoo asked while the two taller girls peeked from her back. They wondered if she was still hung up on the incident that happened inside the detention room, but the cat eyed girl's reply erased all the questions in their heads.

"Why, do you own this table?" Jennie replied without taking her eyes off her food.

Oh she was definitely over it, they almost forgot that it was Kim Jennie they're dealing with.

"Well in a way, yeah? We sit here every lunch time." Jisoo said unsurely because was the girl trying to approach them again? Or at least in her own way.

"I don't see your name here." Jennie finally looked up at them with raised eyebrows.

"Uh, the same goes for you?" Chaeyoung pointed out from behind Jisoo, she wanted to look intimidating by crossing her arms but she really couldn't do that with the tray in her hands.

Jennie merely replied by smirking and pointing to a certain area in the wooden table, the three girls followed the direction of her index finger and alas, found the name 'Jennie' carved onto the wood.

Lisa tilted her head to the side with furrowed brows. "I could've sworn that that wasn't there earlier."

Jennie shrugged, "Are you eating or not?" She said firmly, jutting a thumb at the other free seats indicating them to sit down. The three glanced at each other for a few moments before one by one, they took their seats and began eating. It was quiet the whole time, save for the loud chatters of the students littered all throughout the cafeteria when Lisa decided to break the silence.

"So guys. . ."

Two heads looked up at her, while the last one just gave her a short glance before eating once again. Nevertheless, all the attention was on her now.

"About Seulgi unnie's disappearance, I think it's the best time to continue talking about it now. Don't want to get detention again." Lisa said after taking a sip from her apple juice.

"Nice point." Jisoo agreed as she shivered out of nowhere. It was as if she can still feel Ms. Lee's eyes glaring at them up until now.

"As I said earlier, what do guys think was the reason why she left?" Lisa asked the question that was on everyone's minds.

"Wow, you guys are nosy." Jennie suddenly commented from the side, grabbing the three's attention.

"We're not nosy," Chaeyoung defended with a slight frown, "We're just worried about our unnie, because unlike some other students here, we're actually close with her."

"Yeah, sure." Jennie sighed as she finished the last of her food before picking her tray up and leaving the table.

Lisa clapped slowly.

"Wow! Mood swings are real!" Lisa flailed her arms upwards as soon as Jennie passed the cafeteria's exit.

"Her attitude is seriously starting to creep me out, one second she's okay, then the next she's suddenly back to being her sassy self." She continued with wide, confused eyes. "Is she on her period or something?"

"I agree, it's weird but I'm starting to miss the old her now but at the same time I'm not?" Chaeyoung muttered with puffed cheeks. This caused Jisoo to reprimand her and tell her to finish her food first before speaking.

Chaeyoung only gave her an adorable and sheepish grin before obeying her.

Jisoo chuckled at the two's confused faces due to Jennie's admittedly strange behavior.

The oldest shook her head before glancing up at the large clock hanging on the cafeteria's walls for everybody to see and would you look at that, they still ended up not being able to talk about their supposed topic, "Let's finish up guys and just talk about unnie later after class so no one can interrupt us, it looks like afternoon classes are about to start too."

"Okay class, so today's lesson is all about the Big Bang Theory."

"Stuff and nonsense!" Lisa whisper yelled to her friends beside her, with Chaeyoung and Jisoo sitting to her left and right respectively.

She honestly didn't know what was up with her, but for the past few days she really couldn't seem to concentrate on their classes no matter how hard she tries, or even at anything at that matter. It started when they borrowed the book and their unnie's disappearance gave no help to her distracted mind whatsoever.

Chaeyoung snorted before going mum, meanwhile Jisoo turned slightly to glance at her.

"Lisa, I don't want to go back to detention so just shush!" Jisoo waved her off in the same tone, a hint of warning starting to seep into her voice.

"Ugh, fine. . ." Lisa huffed. She honestly thought that this class was as boring as that one time where she was forced by her aunt to watch politics at home with her, she said something about her duty as a citizen and that she should be more conscious about society or something like that.

She hoped for something—hopefully nothing boring—to happen, she did so with all her heart.

And it would seem that at least someone was listening to her because something did happen. Only that something wasn't anything she expected, and when she says that she means not at all.

Lisa felt something strange moving behind the expanse of her back, she keeps hearing lapses of muffled noises and vibrations.

Jisoo was the one who reprimanded her just a few seconds ago so why was she bugging her now?

"Jisoo unnie stop bugging me!" Lisa muttered while not facing the addressed person because their teacher was throwing the class glances from time to time.

"But I'm not doing any—" Jisoo was cut off.

Buzz. Buzz. Buzz.

"Unnie, stop!" Lisa said once again, her voice a little more urgent this time but she still managed to keep it low as to avoid attracting any attention.

"And I told you that I'm not doing anything!" Jisoo replied with wide eyes.

Lisa turned to look at the confused girl, and it was at that moment when she remembered that Jisoo was beside her, not behind her.

"Then where—"

Buzz. Buzz. Buzz.

Lisa panicked because the peculiar vibration and sound that seemingly came out of nowhere were starting to get stronger and stronger by the second.

But the moment where she concluded that this was no ordinary matter was when she felt like she was slightly getting electrocuted by a sudden rush of energy, it was bearable enough for her to not get hurt, but it was definitely enough to send her jolting up from her seat.

The screech her chair made when it was suddenly pushed back turned most of the class' attention on her.

Lisa's lips turned into a thin line when she realized what she just did, the tall girl tried her best to calm down as she profusely reached for her bag and threw it over her shoulder to clutch on it hard. It was just a hunch, but she needed to be sure.

"Mr. Park may I go to the bathroom?"

Lisa tried to say it nonchalantly, but the slight, almost unnoticeable twitch her body made when she felt another round of energy hit her back betrayed her intentions. She didn't even wait for their teacher's reply as she bolted straight towards the door. Her classmates and teacher only gave her strange looks, while two heads started to follow Lisa's every movement with worry and confusion.

It was funny how confusion was a common theme for them for the past few days.

Jisoo and Chaeyoung looked at each other, the whole thing would've been fine but when even after a few more minutes later and Lisa hasn't returned yet, they knew that something was definitely going on.

"Chaeyoung and Jisoo, you're close with her right?" Mr. Park called for the two, who nodded urgently, "Please check on Lisa and bring her back here."

Meanwhile, things weren't going too well in the bathroom.

After a few more minutes of staring at her bag, she finally gathered the courage to check it.

Lisa soon realized that she was right and that the sounds were indeed coming from her bag. She hastily opened it to investigate, and was shocked to find it coming from the book itself. The tall girl silently mumbled out a what the heck as she took it out and was about to open the brown leather-clad book when Jisoo and Chaeyoung came barging inside the bathroom.

"For the love of God what the hell are you doing, maknae?!" Jisoo scolded the younger girl as soon as she laid her eyes on her, though everyone inside the room can easily hear her concern for the girl overpowering her anger.

"Unnie, I—"

Their conversation was suddenly cut short when a person came out from one of the stalls which they thought were empty.

"Well, what a nice reunion, don't you think?" Jennie's eyes widened in surprise for a second, but her expression quickly morphed into one of amusement and sarcasm. "I knew those voices were familiar."

Lisa, to their surprise just ignored her and continued.

"Unnie, it's the book, i–it's making these weird sounds that's why I came here!" Lisa proceeded to exclaim her explanation, but to her dismay Jisoo only gave her a sharp glare while Chaeyoung and even Jennie looked at her in disbelief.

"This is no time for jokes, Lisa." Jisoo sighed as if to encourage her to stop spouting out nonsense because whatever she just said was something that only happened in fantasy books and movies.

"Have you gone crazy, Lisa?" Jennie looked at her in complete disbelief as she tried to hide her laughs at the ridiculousness of the whole situation

"But I'm serious!" Lisa tried again with an alarmed voice, begging for them to believe her because whatever the hell was happening to the book right now was also starting to seriously freak her out. She knew that if she was in Jennie's shoes she would have said the same thing—Oh fuck, it really was serious because she just mentally agreed with Jennie, of all people.

Jisoo shook her head despite the younger's pleading stare.

"Let's stop whatever this is and just go back to class." The eldest said with authority. Lisa opened her mouth and was about to say something again when Jisoo cut her off, "Right now."

The three girls excluding Lisa were making their way towards the door, when Lisa felt the book in her hands start to vibrate again, causing her to look at it. But this time she noted that it was stronger than the previous ones, much, much more stronger.

Lisa continued to stare at it with narrowed eyes as the vibrations repeated for about three to five more times, and then the most unexpected thing happened.

It glowed. . .

"G–Guys!" Lisa barely stuttered out due to shock, her eyes were impossibly wide at this point.

Jisoo's hands which were already clutching the door knob stopped it's actions because of the younger girl's urgent voice, this caused the other two to halt at their tracks too.

"What's the matter Lisa?" Jisoo sighed deeply even though she was not facing the younger girl.

"The book, it's glowing!" Lisa managed to let out thankfully without stuttering this time.

"Lalisa Manoban, please just stop this nonsense and—" Jisoo was at lost for words when she turned around. Nothing in her life could have prepared her for the sight of the book in Lisa's hands really emitting a soft golden glow. "What the—" She was once again disabled from continuing her sentence because their surroundings suddenly began to shake violently.

"Wait, what the fuck is happening?!" Jennie's frantic eyes looked around as she exclaimed with panic. The cat eyed girl tried her best to maintain her footing despite the unstable state of the floor.

"We don't know either!" The frightened Chaeyoung replied shouting because their sense of hearing were getting obstructed by the obnoxious sound that started to resonate inside the bathroom, depriving them of the ability to hear each other well.

Suddenly, the book opened on it's own accord causing Lisa to let go of it. And as if things weren't already bad, there was this sudden force that pulled the four girls toward the direction of the book that was now on the floor.

"Guys, calm down!" Jisoo took it upon herself to calm the other girls down despite the panic that was also throbbing painfully in her chest.

"Kim, tell me how can we calm down when a fucking book is glowing and it's pulling us towards it?!" Jennie screamed at the girl's face.

Despite just flinching due to Jennie's loud ass voice abusing her poor ears, Jisoo tried to think straight because she knew that panicking wouldn't do them any good in this situation, so she thought of any ways, anything at all that can help them escape this implausible situation they were thrown in.

Because just seconds ago she thought about how things like this only happens in books and movies, and now her own words were biting them in the arse because now those things exactly, were happening to them.

Her chaotic train of thoughts only subsided when her eyes landed on the door.

"Chaeyoung! Grab the door and hold onto it for dear life!" Jisoo commanded. Chaeyoung who was now the one nearest to the door due to them tumbling around earlier immediately grabbed it and held Jennie's hands, one thing led to another, Jennie grabbed Jisoo's hands and Jisoo held Lisa's. The four of them tried their best to hold on, but there was no use as the force was too strong it almost felt like Clark Kent himself was the one pulling them.

"Guys, I can't hold on anymore!" Lisa said as beads of sweat started to form on her milky white skin, the sweat was only adding to their disadvantages as she slowly slipped away from Jisoo's desperate grasp.

To the girls' horror, Lisa's form eventually disappeared from their sight as she got sucked into the book, causing Jisoo to do as well, until one by one, each of them got sucked in slowly.

"No no no no, I'm too young to die!" Jennie screamed before fully disappearing to nothingness.
