Chapter 29: My Mom Taught Me

Mrs. Summers- bold and italics

Chapter 29: 𝓜𝔂 𝓜𝓸𝓶 𝓣𝓪𝓾𝓰𝓱𝓽 𝓜𝓮

Sunday, July 24th

Gracie woke up feeling congested and nauseous. Her head was pounding every time she moved and she was sweating bullets under the sheets.

She slowly dragged herself up, being cautious with every step she took. Gracie went into the bathroom to change her pad because, like life had to be a bitch, she was also on her period.

That was just great.

She climbed back into her bed and curled up in the fetal position, wincing in pain of the cramps. It felt like the devil and mother nature were throwing a party in her uterus.

Playing basketball with painful blood bombs.

Men had it easy. Why couldn't they experience what the pain felt like just once? There would be no more 'you're just being dramatic. I'm sure it doesn't hurt that bad'.

Like her friend, Rachel Green, said: "No uterus. No opinion."

-

Gracie woke up to her phone constantly chiming on her nightstand, which wasn't helping the headache. She reached out for it and found dozens of messages from Cory.

Cory Walker:

Hey.

Cory Walker:
Sent 12:12pm

You there?

Cory Walker:
Sent 12:56pm

Is something wrong?
You usually text back by now.

Cory Walker:
Sent 12:58pm

Do I need to come over?

Cory Walker:
Sent 1:15pm

You're really starting to freak me out. Please answer me.

Gracie Summers:
Sent 1:19pm

I'm fine, you idiot 😂

Thank God for emojis. Gracie wanted to laugh at how overprotective he was being, but she didn't have the strength to.

Gracie Summers:
Sent 1:20pm

I woke up feeling sick.

And I'm on my period.

I was just taking a nap when you started texting.

-

A knock on her door brought Gracie's attention away from her TV and in came her mom with a package tucked under her arm, holding a thermometer in her free hand.

"Hey, sweetie. How're you feeling?"

"Not so good." Even her voice sounded deep because of her sore throat.

"You don't sound so good."

Mom checked her temperature and as it turned out, Gracie was running a running a one hundred-degree fever. She didn't need to look in a mirror to see the beads of sweat sliding down her colorless face.

As long as the mucus stayed in her nose, she wasn't going to be as sick as she usually was. It was when it traveled to her chest that shit hit the fan. She would have major coughing fits where she couldn't breathe between coughs.

Throat lozenges and tea were rendered pointless. Every time she would make herself some tea, she'd be hunched over the toilet coughing up a lung. Fresh air was the only cure.

"I was gonna go to the store for you, but I found this package outside. I think it's from your boyfriend." Mom winked at her before turning around to leave her alone with the unopened box.

Oh, Cory.

What the hell did you do now?

Gracie ripped open the box and found a heating pad, Pamprin pills, NyQuil and DayQuil.

She took a picture of everything inside including a note that read:

Get better

How did you know what I'd need?

For my period, at least

Cory Walker:
Sent 5:03pm

My mom taught me. Since we don't have any sisters, she taught us how to treat a girl when they're on their periods.

Gracie Summers:
Sent 5:04pm

Your mama raised you well.

I hope you don't find this weird, but you're gonna make a woman very happy one day.

Shit.

Cory found himself wishing that woman would be her.
