CHAPTER 24
Amberfeather headed up the ravine.
One moon had passed since her kittens had been born, and Dandelionshade hadn't attacked yet.
She was going to sleep in the same spot as she had two moons ago to see if she could find anything else out.
She located the spot and settled down, noticing how uncomfortable it was.
After ages of tossing and turning, Amberfeather drifted into sleep.
"Amberfeather's kits have been born, why aren't we attacking?"Ashwing!
"Because I thought of a better plan," Dandeliondhade explained,"If we attack when they're warriors, four of them will have to go to the others Clans for help, then we kill them! Amberfeather will suffer from something called revenge,"
Violetslash shook her head,"But she has five kits!"
"Uh-hu. And Wildkit has been asking her mother about herbs, she'll be a medicine cat. We can kill her whild she treats the wounded," Dandelionshade added.
"Umm...I still don't know,"One-eye meowed. Hickorypelt quietly reassured him.
"Okay, Dandelionshade,"he agreed, "What do we have to do?"
☆☆☆
"Amberfeather! Amberfeather! You're kits are ill!"
"W...what? What happened?"
Amberfeather was returning to camp after observing Dandelionshade.
"Me, Redpaw, Oddeye and Berrypaw went hunting and Redpaw brought a rat! Ivylight ate it and went to check no them,"Shadowclaw fretted. Ivylight had been a deaf kit so Mothstar moved him into the elder's den, giving him the name Ivylight for his determination and preperation.
"Calm down,"she soothed,"Is anyone else ill?"
"I...I think Darkpelt is!"
"Stop panicking. I will handle this,"
She hurried into camp, an awful odour hanging in the air.
"Okay, I know what to do,"she murmured.
She stepped into the medicine cat den. Badgerkit, Whitekit, Muddykit, Poppykit, Wildkit, Ivylight and Darkpelt were in there, groaning.
Amberfeather swiftly perpared the medicine and fed them all. Muddykit was the hardest to get around. Her son kept tossing and turning and meowing. In the end, she had to explain to him that although it tasted horrible, it would make him feel better. Reluctantly, he ate it.
A while passed and they quietened.
Thank StarClan, that could have been bad!
Though it'll take them time to recover fully.
Amberfeather settled down near the entrance of the den, barely resisting the urge to curl up with her kits. Sleep refused to come as her mind was active. She tried counting mice, it didn't work. Just as the first rays of dawn were beaming through the sky, sleep changed it's decision, and she dropped off.
"You're kits are beautiful! I'm so proud!"Starflame purred.
She had spawned in StarClan's hunting grounds and the white she-cat had begun to congragulate her on her kitting.
"Thank you. Umm...Starflame," Amberfeather began,"You...knew about Dandelionshade when you were alive, didn't you?"
The white she-cat sighed,"She was my sister once. Well, no we weren't actually sisters but...our bond was so deep that we basically were sisters,"
Amberfeather shot her a questioning glance, signalling for her to go on.
"Me and her went for a walk in the forest one day, and she told me of all her problems. She said that since she was a kit, she'd been having awful dreams were she was running through a dark forest, afraid and alone, she said there were no stars and no moon. A small yellow cat would hiss at her, though she only ever caught glimpses of her pelt,"
"She'd growl,'Only when you destroy the Clans will you be free from us,' so that's what she set out to do. But obviously we were best friends, so she informed me of her plans.
I searched desperately for something to change her mind until at last I spoke, though not the right words,"
"I meowed,'But it's not over, Dandelionshade, we're friends. I can help you!'
She got in a rage and attacked me, I couldn't fight back. She was my Clanmate, my medicine cat and my friend. So she closed her jaws down on my throat,"Starflame shuddered,"I had just enough strength to watch her glance over her shoulder, and to hear her speak,"
"'No, I'm beyond help now,'" and that brought Starflame's tale of woe to an end.
For the first time in her life, she felt a sympathetic feeling for Dandelionshade. Pity. Her former mentor wasn't the monster that she'd thought she was, she'd just been driven mad by her fight for freedom.
