4| The 'F**k it list'

Sometimes luck loved taking a crap on Lucas. And this fine Monday morning was one of them.
Laura refused to leave Lucas alone at home after Dr. Jake told her about the 'plans' Joy had for them.
And because of that, Lucas had to begrudgingly join his aunt on the drive to the hospital, listening to her go on and on about how 'it'll be fun!" and "It'll be a great experience!" for the entirety of the ride, which left him fuming in his seat.
Lucas rarely went out other than the weekly visit to the doctor because going out was a huge hassle. It was a hassle only because he would sometimes run into people he used to know and honestly they weren't a nice bunch. Also, there was a silent pity that he received from everyone everywhere he went and that was enough to make him want to not go out.
He didn't want to mention any of that to Joy because he knew she wouldn't understand and he didn't really have the energy to explain all that to her. He already made up his mind to make up an excuse and bail on her.
All he wanted to do was bail on her and wipe that smug smile off her face. Well, part of him did. The other part wanted to convince her to stop wasting her time on him because nothing good was going to come from it.
Laura on the other hand was more excited than he was to learn that he had plans, and all morning she was bouncy and smiley which only fueled his anger and dismay.
As much as he hoped to destroy Joy's hope with his bailing, he didn't want to sacrifice his aunt's happiness for it.
So, after many failed attempts to convince Laura to not make him go, Lucas had to part ways with her as much as he didn't want to.
Lucas awkwardly stood around, scanning the hallway for the familiar head of raven hair. He never really liked the hallway, but honestly, he didn't like a lot of things— it was like a personality trait for him to hate everything.
But soon he spotted Joy standing by the elevator her body horribly hunched over her phone, her attention fully towards the tiny device in her hand.
She didn't seem to spot him and Lucas contemplated whether he should be the first to approach her or not. He decided to go with the latter because he just wanted to get it over with. And so he approached her with the biggest scowl he could manage.
"Hi," Lucas greeted, his voice coming off drier than usual. Joy flinched ever so slightly but soon composed herself and greeted Lucas with the brightest smile, which made Lucas scowl even more.
"Hey," Joy replied sounding awfully perky. It was like seven in the morning how was she so energetic? "You look nice!"
"Nice?" Lucas forced out not having a choice but to give her a nasty glare. "Thank you." He replied hastily.
"Awh you are being so nice." Joy chuckled. "Now it would be a cherry on top if you gave me a little smile."
"No." He grimaced which only made her smiley-er. He hated this. Sighing, he jabbed his thumb over his shoulder toward the exit, "I'm gonna go if you're just gonna waste my time looking like an idiot."
"Why are in such a hurry?" She snorted. "You haven't even heard my plans."
"Do I want to?" He frowned. Joy pushed off the wall she was leaning on and grabbed him by the elbow, making him finch.
"Hey! We are not on touching terms yet. Get your nasty hands off of me." He tried swatting her hands away.
"How many terms do you have?" Joy mused, continuing to lead him along as Lucas's shoulders slumped in defeat when he realized this girl was the most stubborn bastard he ever met.
"Many and you're not in any of them yet." Lucas snapped.
"You are so rude." Joy sighed a small chuckle soon following. "Follow me." Shaking his head, he trailed behind her to the parking lot trying to get this over with.
"Do you know how to drive?" Joy asked fishing her pockets for keys.
Lucas shrugged, "I know how to ride a motorcycle but got sick before I got to learn how to drive a car."
"You know how to ride a bike?" Joy whipped her head towards him and pointed her chin to her car to get in, "Why have I never seen you with it?"
"Because my aunt drives me around." Lucas shrugged getting in her car, "She also thinks I'll get heavily depressed one day and then off myself with it."
The car felt silent for a moment. Oops.
"Are you depressed?" Joy asked, starting her car after a few beats of silence.
"What kind of question is that?" Lucas scowled.
"I am trying to get to know you more!"
"So you are gonna ask about my trauma's first?"
"Well, if you prefer we can start with 'What is your favorite weather?'"
Lucas's lips pressed together in a permanent scowl. "You are weird. Like really really weird."
"Oh yeah? People call it charming y'know," Joy replied and he rolled his crossing his arms over his chest.
"Where will we even go?"
"To get food!" Joy said her attention on the road. "Do you like food?"
"Yeah...? What kind of question is that?"
"Great! Because we're going to get smoothies!"
"Then why did you ask if i like food?"
"Just 'cause," Joy giggled. "It's a really good smoothie place though. I go there time to time."
"You do?" He pretended to sound as interested as he could, and somehow, Joy seemed to believe it.
"Yep! If you want a recommendation, I like the watermelon creamsicle. It's equal parts cream, Watermelon, and sexiness."
"Sexiness?" Lucas spat out.
"Yeah? What about it?" Joy glanced at him briefly.
"You calling a drink sexy makes me not want to buy it." He admitted. "Like you just ruined it for me."
"I mean I am not wrong. It is actually really delicious! Just pair it with a raisin muffin and your mind will be blown!"
Surprisingly he didn't say or do anything offensive for the rest of the ride. Joy seemed enthusiastic but it didn't change the sour expression on Lucas's face.
When they arrived at the smoothie place, he realized it was just beside the hospital. Eventually, Lucas found himself following Joy inside.
"Order anything," She said, gesturing at Lucas to go to the front. Before he could walk forward, he watched as Joy pulled out her phone, taking a moment to check something.
"You think I'm gonna order for you?" He asked, not bothering to hide the annoyance in his tone.
"No. I'll join you in a second." Joy didn't look up.
Lucas's eyebrows furrowed, not quite expecting the sudden change in her attitude. He eyed her up and down, trying to figure out what made the bouncy girl's mood plummet. Though he didn't dwell on it for too long; it wasn't his problem to worry about.
He ordered a blue lagoon smoothie, barely even glancing at the menu. But right before he could pay the poor minimum-wage worker slaving away at their job, he added, "Can you make me a watermelon creamsicle one too?"
The worker gave him a funny look which Lucas took as nobody likes that but she took the order anyway. As thanks for dealing with him, he paid the worker extra and waited around for Joy who, shocker was still on her phone.
He wasn't so sure if he should bother her, because unlike her, he when to butt in. But he couldn't ignore it now, how her eyebrows twisted and contorted, and the smile she wore faded into a thin line.
It was odd, but they just weren't close enough, they weren't even friends, for him to really care. Plus he doubted Joy wanted to talk about it.
Lucas decided to just leave her be. It was probably for the best anyway.
After some time, she shoved her phone back into her pocket as she joined Lucas's side looking a bit pained. Right around the same time, their orders came out, and once Joy was in front of him, Lucas handed her the drink, watching as her smile bloomed once more.
"Thank you, Lucas. Were you thinking about me?" She wiggled her eyebrows at him, and in seconds, she acted like nothing even happened.
"Why would I?" He scowled as they both went to sit at a table. Joy merely laughed, or well, it was more of a choked-out sound.
"Well," He whistled after finding a seat. "How are your studies going?"
"Ooo are you picking me as your friend?" Joy asked him teasingly.
Lucas scoffed, turning to face her only to shoot Joy some dirty looks. "You paid for this, so I am trying my best not to be rude."
"Yeah, you are really rude," Joy said nonchalantly, making Lucas more annoyed.
"So." Joy started, her expression getting serious. "I bought you here for a proposition."
"A proposition?" He sipped his drink. It was a horrible idea to order what he ordered since it was awfully sweet but it was painfully overpriced so it wouldn't hurt to finish it.
"Yep," Joy popped her 'p', propping her elbows on the table. "Y'know how Jake talked about us being partners so we can show each other new experiences?"
"Yeah," He nodded along, chewing on his straw. "I got nothing to show you."
"Well, that's okay," She said. "We should make a bucket list!"
"A bucket list? What am I, eighty?" Lucas snorted.
"No, but you know what you are?" Joy raised an eyebrow at him.
"You're dying!"
Lucas blinked. Joy shot him a ridiculous set of finger guns. He blinked yet again.
"I mean maybe. Was that too early?" She asked, bringing her hands back down. He just stared at her, taking a rather aggressive sip of his smoothie.
"Alright, but anyway," She leaned forward. "I think we should complete a bucket list. Do all that bangin' stuff. And to make it sound very edgy we can call it the 'Fuck it list'"
"You know I might not finish this fuck it list of yours," He said rolling his eyes.
"I know," She shrugged, "but that's the beauty of life. Some things will never truly be completed."
"Pretty philosophical of you after making an awfully dark joke." He admitted slowly, twirling his straw in his empty cup, regretting that super aggressive slurp because now he had a brain freeze pinching at his skull.
"Anyways, you have five wishes. So you wanna do it?" Joy said pulling her phone and opening the notes app.
"Why should I?" Lucas asked eyeing her suspiciously. The more the moments passed the more she was weirder to him. "And why would you?"
"We both don't know what is ahead of us. Let's do a few things and be excited about them." Joy answered, shrugging.
"That's bullshit." He shrugged mimicking her.
"I'm being honest. No bullshit here," She crossed her arms over the table, tilting her head a little to the side and a small frown over her eyes.
"Aren't you dying too?" Lucas asked.
"No, I am not!" Joy answered a bit too squeamishly. "I joined the group because my brother wanted me to." Lucas just stared at her.
"What? You don't believe me?"
"I don't know. People like bullshit."
"I am not bullshitting. I promise."
"Then why are you even wanting to do this?"
"I always wanted to complete a bucket list. it seemed fun in the movies." Joy said finishing her drink. Lucas just remained quiet, still doubtful.
"You wanna do this or not? It can be like five things or more. All of them are gonna be things you wanna do though." Joy said pushing the phone towards him.
"What should I write?" Lucas asked his voice much quieter.
"Stuff." Joy shrugged. "Things that you wanna enjoy."
Honestly, Lucas didn't feel like getting into this whole ordeal. What was he even living for? It was just a year before all his organs failed and he just died.
He bit the side of his inner cheek, drumming his fingers over the table, and after some more internal debate, he nodded once again.
Lucas quickly jotted down the first five things that came to mind and passed the phone back to Joy who seemed overjoyed, stomping her foot like a kid.
He bit at the edge of his thumb, watching quietly as she scanned through his list. It annoyed him a little how she didn't seem to react when reading it over, keeping him from mentally slapping himself for putting something stupid down.
"It might be stupid—," He started, but she held a finger up, silencing him.
"Hush. There is no stupidness here." She said giving Lucas a warm smile before scribbling her lists down.
Lucas merely watched her as she read the things wrote and gave them back to him. "The next few months will be worth living!" She said with an overenthusiastic smile.
"You didn't think any of that was stupid?" He raised an eyebrow at her. Joy shook her head.
"It sounds fun. I'm down for it," She beamed.
"You're not gonna make fun of me?"
"Lucas," She said softly, and, Lucas hated it. Thankfully, she got the cue, and cleared her throat, starting over. "This is a good list. I'm being honest."
"No bullshit," Lucas pressed again. Joy nodded, playing around with her cup. "I'm gonna tell you one thing right now, I don't like bullshit. Life's too short to make lies, y'know."
"That's a good motto to live by. I'll keep it in mind," She chuckled. "I promise to have no bullshit between us. I'll be a hundred percent honest with you."
"Good," Lucas huffed. "I'm only doing this because I have nothing better to do. Don't think I'm doing this 'coz I have something for you, alright?"
"I wouldn't mind if you had something for me," Joy sang only to be met with a threatening glare from Lucas.
"This will be fun."
