It was the Battle of the Five Armies and Snowflake refused to leave Thorin's side. She, Dwalin, Balin, and her father were protecting him. An orc attempted to kill Thorin from behind, but Balin, in his attempts to deflect it, took the blade to the stomach.

While Dwalin was mourning over his brother, Thorin ran, seeing a group of goblins charging at his nephews. He kill the majority of the group but a few slipped under the dwarven king's defenses and wounded him.

"Thorin!" sobbed Snowflake. When she finally reached him, the last of the orcs and goblins were being hunted by the elves. She lifted his head onto her lap.

"I'm sorry... my love..." he breathed, the light fading from his eyes and his hand going limp in hers. She buried her face in his chest and cried.

Many hours later, the funeral of the dwarven king had concluded and Snowflake was standing on the balcony where she had met Balin when the deceased dwarf's brother appeared at her side.

"Fate is a cruel master," he commented. "It takes from us which we need the most."

"I miss Thorin so much, but I am grateful that I still have you and my father. That's all I could ask for."

"A celebration in Thorin's honor, of his determination and strength, will be held in four days time. His nephews wish for you to speak about him."

"Very well."

"Where will you and your father live after the celebration?"

"Right where we did before I suppose. What about you?"

"I am unsure; with my brother and my parents gone, returning to my previous home would drive me to more drinking than I've ever done," Dwalin explained, staring at the sunset. "I have also grown used to having someone around all the time."

"Stay with us," she said. "It will be just like it was in the Blue Mountains, except with my dad around."

The dwarf smiled at her for several moments before replying.

"That would be wonderful."

Four days later, Snowflake was getting ready for the celebration. She had no idea what she would say about about the late King Under the Mountain, but she knew it would come from her heart.

Dwalin had moved into the Treaty household and Snowflake had been right- it was just like the Blue Mountains, they were best friends. Will thought the way they functioned as one person while cleaning up was fascinating. Snowflake was happy, despite the loss of her fiancé.

As she pulled on the dress she was to wear, she thought about the fact that this was the first party she had ever gone to that Thorin wasn't there for. Thorin and Frarin always were the ones to ask her to dance, and Thorin had been the one to teach. Of course that had been when they were just friends. She wondered how the night would go.

She met her father and Dwalin at the door and her father's smile was bigger than it had ever been.

"You've grown so much sweetheart," he said.

Snowflake looked confused as to who she was supposed to link arms with. It had always been Frarin before because Thorin had duties as heir. Her father solved the problem for her though.

"I'm just an old man, it's only right you're escorted by someone your own age," Will told her, a smile splitting across his face once again. Snowflake giggled before placing her hand in the crook of Dwalin's arm.

When they arrived, Fili and Kili met them at the door.

"So you are willing to speak of our uncle?" Fili asked Snowflake as he hugged her.

"Of course," she replied.

"We will wait ten more minutes for everyone to arrive and the. You can begin," Kili said.

Will went to talk to some old friends so Dwalin and Snowflake found a few rather isolated seats.

The two of them sat there talking and laughing about their time in the Blue Mountains, and as they did so, Dwalin's hand drifted to where it was setting on hers.

"Remember how frantic I was trying to help get ready for the Durin's day celebration? Everyone was trying to get me to do a million things!" She said.

"I don't remember that part too much," Dwalin replied, a grin splitting across his face. "But I remember our dance."

Snowflake wasn't sure what to say after that, but it didn't matter because Kili came to get her so she could make her speech. Now to honor Thorin Oakenshield.
