Dawn and Lily has a strained, tense relationship and both of them knew this.
The brunette is awoken from her deep slumber when the fresh scents of strawberries fills her nostrils. Minutes later, she is sitting crossed legged at the kitchen table across from James ( who was reading the Daily Prophet ) and Lily, who seemed to be writing a letter to the Ministry, she could faintly make out the logo.
Dawn sits there thinking about how a few nights before, Matthew and her had kissed. It had been unexpected to say the least, she was quite literally surprised. She was awake for almost an hour after it thinking about it.
Dawn snorts to herself when she thinks of it. She glances up to see James who looked over at her curiously.
"Everything alright, little Stag?"
Dawn doesn't know why she finds it amusing that the boy crawled out of her window but she nods anyway, despite the curious look James gives her.
"Would you ever use a straightener on your hair?" Dawn questions, gesturing towards her fathers extremely messy hair, similar to Harry's and even to some extreme hers.
James' eyes flash with slight mischief and she could tell he was about to tell a story.
"No, but one time Sirius tried to use one on me. Thankfully I caught him in the act." James explains, "And since that day I've never even gone near one. My hair is to delicate for that."
"Sirius definitely does though."
" Oh he defiantly does." James agreed. It was silent for a few more seconds before he decided to take a chance and ask. " Do you want to go out and play Quidditch?"
Slowly, Dawn shakes her head. "Its been months I probably can't even throw-"
"You know that's not true," James immediately assured her. Dawn glances at him with a false look, not believing it.
"Besides I'm busy anyway."
"Doing what?"
"I've got a date."
"With who?!"
"My bed."
After this the brunette results in returning back to her room.
As she cleans it out, she finds a series of things, including her old diary, Dawn immediately tucked that one away. However she stops when she spots a picture of her and her mother. She doesn't even look at it cause she knows if she does she'll burst out into tears, which no one wanted. She puts it away.
" What is it exactly that's bothering you about Lily, honestly."
She turns when she hears James enter the room. God, she knew he was going to ask this.
Don't roll your eyes Dawn, don't roll them, she thinks.
She goes to open her mouth but he quickly adds, " The truth."
" I just don't want more people coming into my life and leaving. First it was technically you, then my mom, and then Dave, and I know he would have stayed if I asked him to, but the more people I know or am associated with, the more likelihood they have of leaving or dying." the next words she says lowly, and slightly hesitant, " And I especially don't want the next person on that list to be you."
" It won't be." James assures her, softly, he sounded sure and positive that wasn't going to happen. " I promise."
" Pinky?"
James moves over slightly and extends his pinky finger. It seemed as though since last year " Pinky promising," had meant something to the both of them. The two latched fingers softly for a moment before pulling away.
" I'm not going anywhere. At least not for a really, really long time." he told her, she nods slowly and thinks about his words. " You don't have to push Lily away, I know, I know it's hard for you. I do. I don't want you to let Lily in unless your ready to. You don't have to. It's up to you, I just think this arguing between the both of you is having a worse long term effect."
"Okay doctor Phil."
"Sarah will always be your mother, Dawn. No one can replace that."
Dawn missed her mother more than anything. Literally anything.
When he says this, her stomach sinks although part of her likes the fact he acknowledges this.
"If we are on the topic of truth," Dawn replies, looking away for a second. " We need to talk about Hogwarts. I want to go back. There's two left till Christmas holidays, and I want to see my friends."
" I know you miss them-" James nods although she knew he was going to add something into that. Sometimes he hates how overprotective he was, " I just can't let that woman away with the stuff she's been doing to the kids in there."
" She's not going to go near me or anyone else because she knows your own her radar-"
" But Dawn, that tremendous woman hurt you. Emotionally and physically. I can't..I can't let her away with that."
" Tremendous woman? She's worse then that."
" Tremendous bitch."
" Perfect."
After a few seconds Dawn says; " I know you don't want me returning and I understand why, but sitting here doing nothing and letting her win? It's not as good as being in there and doing something, the defense club Harry is doing will teach more people spells to help the rest of the students," Dawn says. He seemed to be listening to what she was saying. " James, please, I will go mad staying in here all day. Besides my education will go downhill if I'm left in here-"
" You don't care about your education."
" Uh I could."
" But you don't."
" Moral of my point," she drawls rolling her eyes but not in an annoyed way, " I need to go back to school. I'm here all day round the clock with my thoughts and it's just not good. I need to see my friends. Harry's at Hogwarts too, nothings going to happen. Dad, please."
Dawn stares at him with her big, hazel darkened eyes, and James just sighs.
" God Dawn your puppy eyes are to much."
" Thank you."

The defense against the Dark arts club proved to be more successful than anything. When she returned back to an empty common room, the first thing she noticed was a small blonde haired boy in the corner of the room. " Their in the room of requirement," was all he said before sending her on her way.
Dawn enters the room and immediately majority of the heads turn towards her. Everyone let out relieves sighs.
" Ah," she shuts the door, " Dont worry. I'm not Umbridge. .or maybe I am."
From across the room Harry gives her a spectacle look, before telling everyone to get back to practicing the spell. From the look of Neville's it didn't seem to be going well. Colleen and Drew from across the room give her a wave and a signal to come over once she was settled in and had spoken to Harry, who was making his way over.
" It seems as though you've really taken this whole leader thing to a level." Dawn comments before adding, " Look at everyone, their like your little bitches."
Harry gives her a look but she could tell he was trying to hold in his laughter. " It's not as easy as it seems. We're trying stupefy spell. You can go with Hermione, I don't think anyone has paired with her yet."
She nods and glanced across the room to where Fred, George and Ron were disarming each other. Behind them was Hermione who was seemed to be waiting for one of them to either stop or offer her to join in.
Dawn smiles towards her softly and when she makes her way over she asks, " Do you want to duel?"
" I'd love to!" Hermione replies enthusiastically, and then the two begin doing just that. At first Hermione disarmed her when she wasn't expecting it, then Dawn got her back and since then the two had been competitively being trying to do it.
" How was your time at," she brought her voice lower then added, " The Potters."
Dawn looks around ensuring no one heard her say this then tells her, " It was nice, different, but nice. Did I miss here? I suppose, but you know? James made sure I wasn't bored everyday."
Hermione smiles. After the lesson ends, everyone returns one by one to their usual Saturday errands. Harry and Dawn however decide to take a stroll across the Black Lake. They had been talking about the fact he was famous to which Dawn says that she would love the choice to have money, and be known. However he had different views.
" It's not like I have a choice," Harry replies, rolling his eyes. When he noticed the look on her face he explained to his sister that, " It's not as easy as you think. Every time I step outside Hogwarts, let it be for a trip to Hogsmeade or Christmas break, guess what? A million bloody cameras are in my face. Daily Prophet reports from all around the globe, not to mention other ones too. Anytime something bad happens apparently I'm involved. When I was in second year, the Daily Prophet got wind of the fact I drove a car to Hogwarts with Ron for the fun, and apparently it was my parents fault! They make everything ten times worse than it actually is. Still want to be on the same page as me, now?"
Dawn shrugs, " Not anymore."
The way he spoke she could sense the boy didn't like growing up in the spotlight. The Potters in easy words were like the Royal Family, except in the Wizarding life. Perhaps, she was just oblivious to it all. Anyone who is famous never liked being famous. James had told her many times how his days before fame were his more favorited.
" You'll know all about it one day." Harry said, giving her a swift pat on the shoulder, " Hopefully not for a long time though."
Dawn gives him a short smile, before becoming quiet. The two continued to walk the grounds of Hogwarts, despite the curfew that was set.
" How was your break at home?"
The way he referred to their house as "Home," makes her send him a look. Usually every time he said that she would correct him and tell him it wasn't her home. She goes to say this but stops herself, she thinks back to today with James. She sighs softly before closing her mouth.
Instead of correcting him she replies with, " Home was good."

Dawn was royally screwed for once. She had been on dates before, of corse she has, but when Matthew gives her an hours notice, she finds it a little flustering, maybe even a little annoying. She races around her room grabbing everything she could find and shoved it into her bag, all he told her was something about seeing a film.
Dawn continues to brush out her hair which didn't seem to be cooperating. Instead she would brush a strand and it would bounce back like a jack in the box. After this she got the chance to change, wearing an outfit James would most definitely not approve of.
( Hermione had helped her earlier thankfully, and give her a pep talk )
Dawn glances at herself in the mirror, and mutters. " Wow. I do understand now what everyone means."
" Don't be out to late!" Hermione days from behind her causing the brunette to whirl around and gives her a look. She found Hermione to be comforting, she didn't judge in a lot of situations. She was just a simply, nice person to be around. She then adds, " You know there is a lot of people out there, including he who shall not be named."
Colleen and Drew seemed to be busy more of the time. They were either disappearing all hours of the day with one another or they were studying.
" I won't, don't worry James already gave me the rundown. I'll see you later. To open the secret passageway?"
Hermione ( despite hating the breaking the rules and the risks ) nods.
After this she waits for another few moments, before she goes down the common room. Along the way she passed Harry ( who says, " Your to young to date," ) and Ron ( who says, " Blimey." ). She gives herself one last look in the mirror before she goes to the door.
She opens the door, with a grin ready to make a comment about the boy.
But, instead of Matthew, Fletcher Usaf stands in front of her holding a charmed blue flower.
Dawn felt her heart quite literally stop.
" Fletcher...." she whispers in confusion.
" Yacker." he breathed, he looks her up and down. " Look cute."
Dawn once snapping out of her state leaned forward and hugged him. He had extended his hands as if he had been waiting just for that. She melted into his arms for the short few seconds.
He prompted her lightly back onto the ground and she found that her arms stayed around his neck. Her heart was racing, her hands was sweaty, she couldn't think straight.
Even after all these months, Fletcher still had this effect on her. ( He probably always would )
" I feel like I'm in a weird dream right now..."
" So do I." he sounded different, nicer, mature even. She wanted to hear him speak again. " I've missed you so much Yacker."
Dawn eyebrows crunch in confusion. " Your here. I mean your actually here." her eyes slowly go down to his robes. " You're wearing Slytherin robes."
Fletcher slowly grinned,
Unlike Dawn.
Before she could even splutter out the question on her mind, she turns to see Matthew racing down the hall. Oh god, no please don't, she thinks. She tries no to fidget to much when Matthew comes over and Fletcher realizes he was there for her.
" I got two tickets to see Space Invader, boom, your favorite."
The brown eyed girl gives him a not-so discreet look, then Matthew realizes she was speaking with someone.
" Oh, uh Matthew," she ran a hand through her hair, " This is Fletcher he's my," she goes to speak only to stop as she hesitates, " old friend, and Fletcher this is Matthews he's my-"
Matthew and Fletcher both turn to her expectantly. Polar opposites.
" Other friend." she adds.
Matthew and Fletcher both give her a look at this.
" Friend?" they both say in union.
The fact the both of them said it at the same time caused her to blink rapidly. Dawn officially, literally hates her life.
" We should get going now if we wanna get good seats," Matthew has said, he then adds ( without even realizing what he was doing whilst saying it ), " We have got a date."
" Oh." Fletcher repeats, it sounded broken on his lips. He nods to himself. Matthew appears to notice the tension. Fletcher and Dawn's eyes meet and she couldn't help but give him a pitiful look.
" Well, uh it seems you two are busy, so I'll be heading off to my dorm."
Dawn turns. " What?"
Fletcher looks back at her. " Yeah, I'm back for good. I'll be seeing you tomorrow," he then throws a look over towards Matthew, before leaving.
" Hold on a second," Matthew blinks rapidly, by the look he gave him it had him wondering who exactly the guy was. " Is that the Fletcher."
Dawn slowly nods, running a hand through her hair.
( It took her a moment to realize she hadn't done that habit in almost a year )
And something told her it was only going to her worse from here.
