Chapter 7: Night of Knights
With the Idols, the Agents, and a good chunk of Beatists freed, Matt was almost done. His mission could finally be finished. He left the area where the Agents were to look up at the Citadel. It towered high into the sky, one wonders how tall it truly is. He went back to his base and rushed into his quarters. He needed some time to think about what he needed to do. He decided if he really wanted to solve this, he needed to cut the crap and just go there. So, he breathed in and out, and readjusted his shades. His all too familiar stoic expression came back. He wasn't gonna hold back anymore. He was going to end it, whether he survives or not. As he left the Synthist base, he visited everyone he freed. Callie, Marie, Pearl, Marina, the Agents... All of them. He made sure to tell them to continue getting recruits. Be it through convincing, lures, or force. He bestowed a portion of his power to each of them, making them his own pillars. He walked to the Citadel, eager to face off against the final two. While he plans to free Kinzie, he has no mercy left for Lux. Last time, he simply shot her dead. But now... Now he wishes to obliterate her.
Matt went through the rooms that the Agents were in to find a passage that led to higher up. He felt like he was rising up to the challenge of ending the corrupted reign of Beatism, and he could hear a choir of battle cries rooting for him in his ears as he rose up. He noticed that the area seemed different from when he ruled over it. Particularly, the teleporter that went to the throne room was replaced by a staircase. While it was long, Matt's stamina made it seem like a joke by running straight up. When he reached the throne room's doors, he stopped. The choir he was hearing stopped as well, and he breathed in and out to prepare. He walked forward into the last room, taking care with the door. This is where they were meant to be. Only, instead of a throne, there sat what looked to be a futuristic dining table. What on earth? Matt stepped forward cautiously, as if assuring himself there were no traps or hidden attackers. He stepped up to the table, and found a plate of crème brûlée, with a note peeking from underneath the plate. Matt sat down, sliding the note out and opening it up. The words were in neat cursive.
Dear Matt,
I'm sorry for all the trouble I've caused. To make it up, I've decided to make you your favorite dessert. And I swear it isn't poisoned.
Love, Lux
"My favorite dessert is lava cake, but okay..." Matt set it down, and broke the sugary surface with his spoon, taking a bite. He waited for a few moments. Sure enough, as the note said, it wasn't poisoned. Or his poison resistance from surviving so many poison attempts is working. Either way, he continued to eat, and then heard footsteps approach the table. Lux sat across from him, her cyan lips in a soft smile. "Do you like it?" She asked. Matt looked up at her. For the first time, Lux didn't seem threatening, or like a tyrant. She seemed... almost cute, despite the fact that she was made of gears and parts. Matt nodded. "It's good." Lux gave a bright smile, giggling. "Yay! I knew you'd like it! Say, I wanna ask you something. Do you wanna see Kinzie again?" Matt froze, and set his spoon down. He stiffened. "What do you mean by that?" Matt said, a hint of hesitation in his voice. "Well," Lux tapped her chin. "I know you and Kinzie have a history. I'd be ashamed of myself if I kept you two separate. Tell me Matt. Do you love her?" Matt tore his gaze away to gather his thoughts. "Of course I do. What-" "Because I don't think she loves you." A shocked 'Uh' escaped Matt. He turned away, attempting to hold back tears that threatened to come. "Liar. Kinzie would never leave me." Lux rested her chin in her hand. "Really now? Well, I did ask her to join us."
Matt looked to the left to see Kinzie walk up to the table. She leaned forward, resting her elbows upon it. "Hello, Matt. So nice to see you." Her voice was smooth. Much smoother than he'd ever heard it. "It's true, y'know. My place is here, with Lux. I don't need you anymore." Matt felt himself begin to boil. Yet he held himself back, one thing he rarely did. If he were to attack now, it would be enough to alert the guards. His left eye twitched madly. "Kinzie, you're lying! It's those shades she-!" "It was Spyke." Lux said, cutting him off. "He was the one who convinced her to be on my side. Things are much better now." Matt's face formed his stoic look as he turned to Lux. It quickly turned to a look of rage. "You." He slowly stood up, and then lunged. "I'LL KILL YOU!" His hands closed around Lux's throat, and he let all of his anger flow as his fists grew tighter. Something threw him off her, and he landed with a thud on the hard granite floor a few feet below. He looked up at the sound of Lux's coughing, and saw Kinzie look down at him with a spiteful expression. As Kinzie turned away, Matt shakily stood up. He looked up at them both, they turned to look at him. Matt's eyes began to glow as power began to surge through him. He heard a voice echo in him that wasn't his. "Welcome back, DJ Miller." He was at his angriest, and he looked to the left to see where the voice was coming from. It was the Synthblade, his sword, stuck in an elevated piece of the floor, similar to King Arthur's sword. With a flash of blue, he dashed to it, and with one arm, pulled it straight from the floor as a lightning bolt hit the tip, supercharging Matt, and giving him his Synthwalker outfit, electricity coursing throughout his body. "Time to die, Lux!"
"Get out of here! I'll take care of him!" Kinzie yelled at Lux, who ran outside of the throne room. She looked back at Matt, who was floating in mid-air, his expression filled with pure rage. "Come on then! Show me what you've got!" Kinzie yelled at Matt. That was a very bad decision... "With pleasure." He air dashed straight at her and swiped, Kinzie barely dodging out of the way. Matt landed and ran at her to do several slices, each managing to land. He knocked her to the ground and was about to stab her shades, but Kinzie kicked him in the stomach hard enough to send him flying. She stood up, and around her, several knives started to appear. They all darted at Matt, and he parried several and dodged the rest. He ran at Kinzie, who started walking backwards while launching more knives at him. Matt caught up and did a few sword thrusts, but Kinzie dodged them all. She kicked Matt, who ducked under the kick and sliced her leg. It was parried by a knife that appeared, and Matt dodge-rolled to the side. He kept up the pressure, Kinzie managing to keep up by summoning more knives. She dashed to the other end of the arena, and summoned a rain of knives above her. She threw the entire thing at Matt, who kept trying to parry the knives as dodging was out of the question. He succeeded in parrying a lot of them, but some still managed to land and stab him. He staggered for a moment, but it was enough for Kinzie to appear near him and kick him in the head, knocking him to the ground. He jumped back up to see Kinzie throw a knife directly at his throat. He dodged it, only to be hit by another knife in the arm. With another stagger, more knives began to land on him. Kinzie was about to finish him off, but Matt caught her off guard with a Shadow Dodge, appearing behind her and stabbing her in the back. It didn't kill her, but it was able to weaken her.
Kinzie fell onto her knees, weakened by the fierce stab. Matt was about to pull the shades right off her face, but she reached for her pocket and pulled out her Time Watch. She opened it, and time began to slow. Eventually, it stopped, and Kinzie was able to get up. She looked behind her to see Matt, reaching for where she was, frozen in time. She chuckled to herself before throwing an entire barrage at the frozen Matt. She made sure to put the knives in places where Matt couldn't dodge or parry. Once that was done, she unfroze time. The knives all went toward Matt, and it seemed like they all landed. Kinzie turned around, thinking herself victorious. "Shouldn't have messed with the Synthslayer..." She said arrogantly. Suddenly, she felt herself freezing. She tried to turn around, but when she did, Matt wasn't there, and all the knives had gone past their target. Suddenly, a voice was heard from behind her, as she couldn't move anymore. "How the tables have turned. Looks like you forgot I could stop time as well, huh?" Matt told her before putting his Tarot Card into his pocket. He approached the frozen Kinzie and started punching insanely fast. Once he was done, he turned around. "And time resumes..." With his words, Kinzie was sent flying across the arena, landing in a wall. She couldn't move. But somehow, she was able to stand up, but only barely. She looked at Matt, who was looking her in the eyes. His technique wasn't working. So he has to do the one thing he knew could save her. Remind her of the one she loved.
Music began to play. Kinzie looked around, as she could hear it. Matt started to sing. "Dismantle me like before, show me your teeth and tongue... Make me regret what I've done..." His lyrics echoed in Kinzie's mind. Her memories of Matt's kindness to her were coming back. "Whisper to me of your love, show me that I'm enough, let's disregard all the things that you've done, to bend me, to break me." He got closer to Kinzie as he sang. She got closer as well, as more and more of her consciousness was returning. "I'm not your enemy, I'm just going in for the kill... If you think that this will be easy, oh, I guess you are... probably right." The lyrics unlocked Kinzie's shackled heart, and her memories flooded back. Her heartbreak, her captivity, her rescue, her life with Matt... It all came back to her. "I'll let you decide who's the enemy, who's the enemy, who's the enemy..." Kinzie sang along with Matt as her shades began to lose power. A swirl of black and white was appearing around them, enveloping them like yin and yang. It went around them like a storm, yet it didn't directly interrupt them. "I'll let you decide who's the enemy, I'm the enemy, I'm the enemy..." Kinzie's shades completely powered down and fell off her face. Matt looked her in her light-blue eyes. How he missed looking at them... Her smile, her hair, her looks... He kissed her on the lips passionately. The taste of blueberry he longed for... She kissed him back, and Matt started crying. Tears escaped his eyes, but it didn't matter. He had Kinzie back. Yet, even with this, he wasn't done yet. It's time to truly, finally end this. To kill Lux once and for all!
