Chapter 4: Shade Bytes

Matt checked the map he had to see where his next target was. It was Marina, since Pearl was already dead previously. Matt knew that well, because he was the one who killed her. He scanned the map to see that she was in the Deepsynth Metro. Why there, he had no idea. He simply just found the abandoned subway entrance that led there from Beatopolis Square after he defeated the Shaded Sisters. As he descended, he felt things change around him. As he went further, the exit felt farther and farther than it should be. Reality around him began to warp as he arrived at the Central Station's platform. He looked around and saw a train arrived on the other side. Without a moment's hesitation, he jumped over the rails twice and landed at the other side. He looked at the train before realizing that the entire Metro looked less like the rest of the Realm and more like his own dimension's version. The neon colors were still present, albeit subdued and more focused on darkness, just as he remembered the original. He boarded the train and the doors closed behind him before the train started moving.

There was no one else on the train car he was in, surprisingly. He reached into his jacket and pulled out his own CQ-80 that he got from C.Q. in his dimension after taking a visit down there. He activated it, but before he could fully look at it, the train's P.A. system spoke. "A new CQ-80 user has boarded. Please move forward through the train." That must mean him. He went to the next cars, yet there were still no other riders. Once he was near the front of the train, he saw a multi-colored version of C.Q. Cumber waiting for him. "Greetings. I am-" Matt interrupted him. "C.Q. Cumber, yeah, I know. I've heard of how you blow test subjects up when they fail." There wasn't any emotion on C.Q.'s face, not that he had one to begin with. Matt just turned around and activated the CQ-80 and looked around it. The map had synced to his CQ-80, so it was an entirely different map. However, it didn't make much of a difference, as it mostly was just a recolor of the original map. He noticed his map was still complete, so the thang stations were re-marked. Without skipping a beat, he went to the first one.

When he went there, he skipped the equipper and went straight to the thang. Surprisingly enough, there wasn't anything there. As he was about to leave, he noticed something near him. He went to it and saw it was a necklace of sorts. It was silver and had a plus-shaped hole in the center. He put it in his pocket and returned to the train. He went to the next one, where the situation was the same. Albeit this time, rather than a necklace, it was a sweater. It was pink in the torso, but the sleeves were mostly cream-colored. He folded it up and stuffed it inside his jacket. It fit for some reason. He did the same for the third thang, and in there he found a microphone. He noticed that the items looked really familiar. As he entered the train after leaving the third thang station, he saw the CQ-80 progressively glowed turquoise. He just shrugged it off and went to the fourth thang station. Same cycle, but this time it was a crown. Suddenly, it hit him. The items he was collecting were Pearl's outfit from the Deepsea Metro in his dimension. He returned to the train in a hurry. His CQ-80 beeped, and when he opened it up, Central Station was marked. With a sense of urgency, he traveled back there.

As he arrived, he felt something was off. He stepped onto the platform before noticing someone was at the center. It was... Marina? Matt jumped to her before slowly approaching her. She turned around and faced him, her shades glistening in the light. "You... I remember you... You killed Pearlie!" She yelled at him. He could see tears flowing from under her shades. Who knows how long she's been like this... "And now you've come back here!? To what, finish me off as well!? WELL I WON'T LET YOU!" She was furious. Matt stepped back before Marina ran straight at him and hit him with an uppercut. She followed up with a rush of punches that Matt wasn't able to block. Right as he was about to counterattack, Marina cut him off with a quick hook. He staggered backwards before noticing he was bleeding from his nose. He got pissed off as well and threw his own combo. However, rather than straight up killing her like he usually does, he simply grabs her and throws her back. "I didn't come here to kill you... I wanted to free you from Beatism... That wasn't the real Pearl on the news, was it?" He huffed between sentences. He noticed the Pearl from the news looked somewhat robotic. Marina fell to her knees in sadness. "No it wasn't... Ever since you killed her, my life's never been the same..." Matt felt bad for killing her now. "I wanted to solve that. By doing this."

Marina raised her head to see Matt holding Pearl's entire outfit in his hands. He felt something inside him and put his hands together. Blue flames were forming in them, and Matt released them into the outfit. Rather than burning them up, they seemed to be forming into something... Marina realized the shape they were becoming. It was Pearl. As the flames fully formed, they burst into rings around both of them. Marina shielded her eyes while Matt braced it. When they looked back, Pearl was in front of them, wearing her underground outfit, unshaded. "P-Pearlie...?" Marina whispered to herself. She looked back at Matt and met his eyes. The blue lights that freed the Shaded Sisters presented themselves to her and removed the Beatist thoughts in her. The shades fell off her face, deactivated. Marina ran to Pearl and gave her a hug. Pearl, albeit confused, hugged back. "Pearl! You're back! I can't believe this!" She had a happier tone of voice, and her tears were no longer of sadness, but of happiness. "Y-yeah, I'm back... What happened?" She asked in an awkward tone of voice. Marina looked at Matt, who gave her a thumbs up and smiled. "Thank you." She mouthed the words to Matt. He simply nodded before starting to walk away. He's granted her a wish, and he felt damn good doing it. Next target, the Agents.
