"I am balding, Daisy, honestly I am," Minhyuk retorted, one hand on the driving wheel and eyes focused on the road.
In the back, the other three continuously bickered. Changkyun glared at Jooheon while the dimpled boy whined, in the middle of them sat Hyungwon who kept growling as the other two were disrupting his peaceful slumber.
"And that's why you haven't been dying your hair for a while now?" I sank in my seat beside Minhyuk who hummed in response. Busy streets passed us by, trees dancing with the rhythm of the wind. Spring was supposed to be the season of joy but even amidst this warmth my heart sought for more.
"How's Shownu, Wonho and Kihyun?" Finally I asked. Minhyuk glanced at me before turning ahead, his reaction unfazed.
"Shownu's mom got better, her health has been improving. And hyung has been in a better mood too. So that's good news!"
It still was hard for me to fathom that Shownu's right hand wasn't working anymore. Ryujoon stabbed him with a broken bottle from the club, and it cut important nerves. Shownu couldn't voluntarily move his hand and all of these, I had heard from the boys.
Even just by listening to it all, remembering it infuriated me and broke me at the same time. I recalled at the hill when we all held hands and promised to be together forever it was Shownu and Kihyun by my sides, and I had held Shownu's right arm at that time.
Who knew it would be my last time holding his right hand?
I hadn't seen his face, not even a single photo. Clearly it was all hard for him to accept, his own self was hard for him to accept.
My heart ached in pain, the booming colors outside monotonous and gray. Like my life that had become prosaic when it lost the colors that once was the prominent part of my every day.
At least a few of the colors were still there. I looked back again to find Jooheon and Changkyun singing the chorus of Ariana Grande's seven rings that played on the radio of the car.
And they ushered Hyungwon to do the same, holding up his limp hands and making them dance in the air. Hyungwon kept sitting back with a distasteful look on his face and then the boys shouted, "You like my hair?" Hyungwon shot up from his position and drawled, "Gee, thanks, just bought it."
From my side, Minhyuk shouted along the next lines. "I see it! I like it! I want it! I got it!"
"Woah, your English improved from no rain, it's sunny, the weather is good, to this!" Jooheon's voice reached a crescendo to talk over the music.
Changkyun joined in next with a mimicking voice, "Geogbu, hate! Music, like!"
"Bully me more and I will kick you both out of the car," Minhyuk grumbled as he turned down the radio. With a frown on his face he drove the car and I turned my head to hide the giggles that kept bubbling inside my chest.
"Don't make fun of him when you said let's have fun and sex in the English club meeting, Changkyun," Hyungwon's voice reached me from the back and I deflated even more to stop laughing.
"And I had to tell them to erase their brains," Jooheon groaned and I heard Changkyun muttering a small, 'it was a mistake.'
Minhyuk sighed loudly in response to the trio, "Since we've been gone you guys are only fucking things up real great, I see."
"Where are we going anyway?" Changkyun asked changing the topic and I focused outside. The afternoon was falling and an indigo had cascaded down the sky to envelope the city in an evening hug. Streetlamps started lighting up one by one, the road not as busy, empty, but familiar.
My eyes slowly started to widen when I realized the familiar streets, shops and stops. To my side, Minhyuk trembled in his silent and eerie chuckle again, as if he had a big master plan inside his head.
"Wow, it's been really long since I had been here," Hyungwon mused.
"I swear to god hyung, if we only came this far because you were in the mood to smash some junks, again," Chankgyun complained but Minhyuk stayed silent.
"Are we going to-" The car's tires screeched on the gravel next second as Minhyuk abruptly stopped, my body leaned forward for the sudden stopping of the movement and in the back the rest of the boys were uttering rainbows of swear words.
To me, none of that mattered in the moment. Not the boys cursing out loud or Minhyuk cussing at them back, because in front of me laid down a worn down building, and hundreds of memories that were made under the roof of the very place suddenly started to swarm in.
The person who stood outside of the once- clan club, who took rushed steps, opened the car's door just so I could step outside and engulf him in the tightest hug made me go back to a time, when everything was fine.
His hair was still as dazzling, still contrasting with his pale complexion. Wonho pulled me out of the hug but the grin that was on his face was brighter than anything I'd ever seen, at the same time his eyes were filled with tears.
"Wonho hyung!" Only then did I notice the rest of the boys screaming and jumping onto him, the bubblegum head being the sturdiest among them received the three bodies clinging onto him well.
"I told you to wait inside for the surprise!" Minhyuk grumbled as he walked up to my side. By then my own vision was getting blurry. It really had been so long, so darn long since I had seen Wonho.
I always regretted not spending more time with him, not enjoying every second with him like it could be my last, as I had taken him for granted, taken them all for granted.
I only realized how much they all meant to me, only when they were gone. I missed him, missed them so much, there was a void in my heart only they could replenish.
Wonho came in and took my hand, the rest still stuck to him and I saw Jooheon crying, Hyungwon wiping his eyes carefully and Changkyun had his head buried behind Wonho's back and wouldn't remove himself.
"Let's go inside," Wonho said. As much as I wanted to tell him how much I had missed him, no words came out of my mouth.
"Are we really going inside? Isn't the place haunted by now?" Jooheon whimpered, weeping to himself and looking up at the old building looming over us. Possibly no one had went inside for a whole year let alone any activity that went down there.
The sign, 'the clan club' was still up in the placard, not staring at us with pride like before but looking down, heavy for the years of memory and haunting past that weighed it down.
Dust were piling up by the entrance, and cobwebs hanging on the front gate. Minhyuk squeezed my free hand while Wonho kept holding on to my other.
Would it be okay to go inside there? "I would like to befriend some ghosts anyway," Changkyun's muffled up voice reached me and I thought, yes, it indeed was okay. Because we had each other.
"Let's go." Hyungwon took the first step and we followed.
Inside, it was just as dark, a murky smell floating around the place that held days of gloom in it, as if it had absorbed all our sadness and regret and the whole place succumbed to it. Then Minhyuk turned on a switch and bright light engulfed us.
It almost felt unbelievable, how this place was so alive, how there would be guards, car and people lining up by this very front gate. How people would dance around this very floor while neon lights would fall on them from the highly decorated ceiling. Bartenders and waiters would run around with drinks, the DJ would turn up loud music and the whole place would resonate with it.
Entirely different from the desolated space that laid before us. But it was clean, at least, it looked like someone had cleaned it very recently.
Minhyuk took steps again and I followed him with the rest, all of our hands linked and silence chaining us. The dreary atmosphere hung on us like a mist but at the same time there was an anticipation, as if something more was coming, something that we all had been yarning for.
When Minhyuk stopped by the door with an 'x' engraved on it, I was ready to embrace it and at the same time I wasn't.
This was where it had all started, my first formal meeting with them, our time spent together, our conversations, and our memories. This was also the place where it all ended, where Shownu shot Ryujoon and police raided the place the next hour.
After a long time I had found myself here, yet it felt like yesterday when I first stepped inside the door.
Minhyuk shoved the door aside and I had my breath held inside my lungs, light washed us over and only white noise surrounded my ears.
The next second it dissolved into a piercing scream that was coming from Jooheon, Changkyun and Hyungwon followed and then they ran to the boy who stood a few feet away inside the room. The warmest smile on his face and one of his hand stretched out for a hug, he was waiting just for us.
Shownu's dark brown hair had grown longer than before, not extremely short like the last time I had seen him. Other than that, he was still the same. Still radiating the same warmth and home-like feeling to him, he was home. And the boys had finally found their home again as they grabbed him in a hug while I stood between Minhyuk and Wonho, trembling on my feet.
This could be a dream, a happy dream I was having after ages. Because after they were gone, all I had were nightmares.
"Go to him," Wonho whispered close to me and I did not care anymore if this was a dream. It was still a happy memory and I wanted to live in it, I wanted to grab on it and never let go.
Because happiness was always so ephemeral, that didn't mean we couldn't enjoy them, that only meant we should live in those happy moments to the fullest just so the sad moments too would be bearable.
Because we were once a happier version of ourselves and because, happiness could comeback too like Shownu and Wonho.
I ran to him and let myself fall in the circle. I was smaller in height from all of them so I could barely reach Shownu, but then I realized that the boys had made an opening for me and I found myself hugging onto Shownu's chest.
"It's so good to see you again, Daisy." Shownu patted my head, his voice still as velvety like the last time. And then he hugged me with one of his arms, holding me tightly.
This was too real to be a dream.
I could barely suppress the tears anymore, they were falling and wetting Shownu's shirt. Then I heard Hyungwon's voice in the distance, "Why were you hiding, God, you scared me Kihyun."
The name had my heart stop its beating inside my chest, as if the world had stopped spinning for a whole second, as if everything just, halted.
Shownu pulled himself away and ushered my limp body to the other boy that stood close to us, his hair obsidian dark and round specs on his small face, calm eyes that stared at me yet spoke a thousand words.
Kihyun walked closer and the next second he wrapped his hand around me, pulling me in his embrace. The same scent that would make me drunk in him- the sweet scent of aftershave and cologne, a part of him that was there only when he wouldn't smoke, embraced me too.
With hazy eyes I put arms on his back and buried my head on his shoulder. They said that you couldn't smell anything inside your dreams, now that I had the taste of his scent, it dawned on me that this was real. This was really happening.
"Thanks for coming back." My voice was inaudible, hiding behind the tears but he still heard it.
"I know you believed we would."
This was my first time hugging Kihyun and I knew he surely wasn't the type to show his feelings in front of everyone, I guessed it didn't matter to him too.
"Okay boys, this calls for a group hug, they lovely bunch can get their lone time letter," Minhyuk announced loudly and the next second I found two more pairs of arm around us, Hyungwon and Jooheon.
Soon the rest joined one by one, Shownu, Wonho, Minhyuk, and even Changkyun. It was a group hug, pieces of puzzle finally joined together.
The puzzle was completed now.
"So are we going to claim the clan club again and reopen the business?" Hyungwon meekly said from my back.
Shownu nodded as I could feel his head jostle my hair. "Yeah."
"The beer business too?" Jooheon spoke, his voice incredulous.
"I told you it was a surprise! Honey, you have a big storm coming," Minhyuk chuckled loudly.
"They probably did not know it was this big of a surprise." Wonho tightened his arms around, pulling in the group and earning grunts from the younger bunch.
"And how long do we have to stay in a hug like this?" Changkyun jeered.
"Shut up and enjoy it," Minhyuk responded. But Kihyun let loose and shoved Minhyuk and Wonho who were clinging to him away.
"I can barely breathe because of you guys," Kihyun complained and glared at Minhyuk before he could make another comment.
This was only the restart, a new and fresh start to everything that was to come.
Bad boys do leave, but some of these bad boys could be good enough to come back and stay.
My bad boys stayed.
