Chapter 15: Helping Hand

Undyne

I turn my head up at the clock for the seventh past tonight, it's an hour past our usual time! The punk's late! Standing pushes the entire table backwards a meter but my anger for Papyrus is too large for me to care. The slam of my door echoes through a small area of Waterfall, following me as I run towards Snowdin. Running should help keep me warm once I get there instead of having to put on a coat once the Riverperson drops me off. I pass several residents of the area who only watch as I run by them, Papyrus is gonna pay for getting me all worked up like this!

Duska

A loud knocking comes from downstairs, I quickly open it and throw it open before it wakes the brothers.

"Where's Papyrus!?!"

"Shh Undyne! He's here just stay quiet!"

Coughing from upstairs tells me that my attempt to keep them asleep hasn't worked. I sigh as Undyne looks confused at my statement and the dual coughing upstairs.

"Uh... who's here? Did Papyrus bring someone home again?"

I quietly giggle a little at the thought of Papyrus bringing in several unwilling sick people into his home. I motion Undyne to come inside and she sits in a dining room chair as I begin chopping up tomatoes for a soup i'm making for the brothers.

"It's Papyrus and Sans upstairs, they're both sick. I was trying to keep them asleep as long as possible, I guess I sorta did that..."

Finishing with the tomatoes I chuck them into a pot that's pre-filled with water and turn the stove up to an appropriate temperature.

"How are they sick!?! They're frickin' skeletons!"

"Magic does a lot to monsters souls, so technically their souls are sick. I remember reading in my Dad's journal that Sans has been sick before when he was younger. He just treated it just as a really bad human cold."

She seems to understand as her expression changes, I really must be good at explaining science. I add the remaining ingredients into the soup then grab out a bottle of ketchup to put into Sans' once I put them into separate bowls.

"You need help bringing that up there?"

"I should be fine. Thank you for the offer Undyne."

She looks uncomfortable, I guess that she is worried for Papyrus and Sans.

"Do... monsters get sick often?"

"No. No it's incredibly rare. I don't even need to be a nerd like Alphys to know that!"

Her voice raises during the end of her last sentence but it seems forced. Her actions and wording all lead to her being scared, maybe being sick is... almost like a death sentence. Sans must have survived that first time because he had two scientists looking over him. I push back the horrible thought and fill two large rimmed bowls with the soup and begin carrying them with the ketchup beneath my armpit. Undyne follows me into Papyrus' room without a word but stands beside the door as I place the bowls onto the table side bench.

"I got you guys some soup. How much ketchup do you want in yours Sans?"

His eye sockets slowly open and once again it makes my stomach drop, he just looks so weak and tired. He smiles as he focuses on the ketchup in my hand and I giggle as I could guess his answer.

"All of it, right?"

The slight nod comes before I even finish the sentence, I giggle as I unscrew the bottle lid and pour the half liquid-y, half solid condiment from the container.

"Hey Undyne?"

I talk while hitting the bottom of the bottle, watching small bits of ketchup slowly plop into the soup and make a small splash.

"Yeah punk? You need help?"

"Uh... Could you help Paps with his soup? It'd help me a lot."

"U-Uh... sure. Yeah."

She seems kind of unsure but Papyrus' smile seems to make her more comfortable with feeding him. I sat on the edge of Sans' mattress while Undyne did the same with Papyrus' car bed. I mix Sans' soup a little to try and get the ketchup to dissolve a bit then fill the spoon with the dark red liquid. Sans tries to grab the spoon but I push his hand down with my own free one which he seems to dislike.

"Let me help Sans. You can hardly lift your arm without shaking with effort. Just eat the soup and i'll do the rest."

He seems unwilling but after I slowly push the spoon forward he seems to be too hungry to argue. His teeth slightly part and I slowly pour the soup. I always found it fascinating how Sans and Papyrus 'ate' but now doesn't seem to be the time. As I pulled away the spoon Sans' smile grew wider as his eyes stared at the spoon.

"Guess I know how to make a good soup."

Papyrus makes some kind of appreciative noise that Undyne tells him off for since he used energy to make it. I quietly laugh at their engagement as I fill the spoon again, a large blob of ketchup sits on top. Sans' eyes widen at the sight of it and I giggle again, he's making me laugh without even throwing puns at me. Undyne and I continue to help them eat for the next hour before the two fall asleep from exhaustion. We pile the two bowls on top of each other which Undyne takes downstairs to wash. I quickly go to Papyrus' bed and give him a kiss on the forehead, making his smile a little wider. I do the same with Sans and pull the blanket up higher so that it's covering more of his bones. I look at the two as I back out of the room and quietly close the door so that Undyne and I don't wake them.

"Hey punk."

I jump and grab at my heart at Undyne's sudden voice reaching my ear. She was standing right behind me, still holding the almost empty bowls of soup.

"Do you have a crush on one of them?"

Her questions makes me freeze in place as my heart beats ten times faster. My expression must be a satisfactory answer to her as she quietly laughs.

"Knew it. I won't tell anyone punk, but you owe me!"

She runs down the stairs before i'm able to say anything in response, do I have a crush on one of them? I think it was just the bluntness of her question that made me freeze up, i'm not used to personal questions like that. I shrug it off and find Undyne furiously scrubbing the bowls in the unnaturally tall sink, sitting on it's edge with both hands cleaning.

"Uh... we do have a sink in the bathroom ya know."

"It's funner and easier to do it here!"

Can't argue with that. I let her wash the dishes as I glad wrap the bowl of soup and stick it into the fridge so that it'll be fresh for tomorrow maybe even the day after. She quickly finishes with only breaking only one dish, a cup that was needing to be cleaned, and says that she wants to head to Alphys before seven o'clock rolls past.

"Look after them alright punk? Papyrus needs to make up for all the missed days he's gonna rack up."

"I will. If anything remotely strange happens i'll call Alphys if that makes you feel better."

Her signature smile shows up for a quick second before being pulled into a bone breaking hug and her overly energized leaving with almost breaking the door down with her foot. I watch her run through the falling snow flakes until the mist between Snowdin and Waterfall engulfs her silhouette. I walk back inside and reopen the brothers door before laying down against the wall of their room again. The sound of the two brothers magically breathing lulls me into a light sleep.
